What's new

What now for PTI?

well thats your opinion, flawed and misplaced as it is. My views would be selfish if they benefited just me. They dont. There are millions like me who do not want to live under an iron fist, with zero self respect, forced to beg others so the country can survive. Imran stands against all that. We all know what we are fighting for. If he chooses to leave thats his choice but why would we support him then?

1000 reasons to support him ,from everything he has given from cricket to cancer hospitals to bringing in light the actual issue for Pakistan.

It’s insane what Pakistanis expect from one individual.

IK has always been a survivor. When the whole world has said he is done for, he has sprung up surprises.

One basic thing that they should have done is read up on Aseem Muneer. The man is a beast with laser focus and incredible career. Even enemies on all sides fear this man. No ordinary Bajwa. Cannot take him on like this.

Imran is indeed a shining star in this dark world. But we also must give a lot of respect and love to the PTI leaders who have faced so much torture, mental and physical but continue to stand by their principles and continue to fight for Pakistan. May God bless them and their family with peace and reward them.

I was very nervous for the past two weeks and I’m still in favour of Khan leaving the country and taking some time off. I can understand him abandoning things is not easy because he has thousands of people locked up and being tortured. If he leaves, those people will give up hope. He has to manoeuvre this difficult phase and crawl out of the deep hole, which seems impossible right now. Knowing he has always conquered in the end gives me hope and belief.

If you give me options out of the current lot, I will vote for him any day. He may have flaws and done wrong in the past but he is the best option for Pakistan in the current lot.

Moreover, if Army or Showbaz wanted to take him out they would have done it by now. This waiting game also gives me hope that there might be light at the end of the tunnel. Khan has to resist this extreme pressure because the government will eventually have to move on and call on elections be it this year or next year. The goons are not calling for elections because they know they will be wiped out. With the amount of ill gotten wealth they have gathered, it will be better if they leave for UAE and give up the hope of beating Khan in elections because that may never happen.

Khan needs a stable strong majority to implement whatever his vision is. I hope we see that day.

Reminds me of the scene in HP Deathly Hallows, when the death eaters deserted Voldermort after seeing Harry surviving.

Not that Khan is evil like Voldemort. Just reminds me of the scene

The game plan is to have IK locked up for a good 5-10 years and be isolated, PTI banned for inciting violence, remaining PTI leaders to form forward blocks compromising with the PDM and the establishment and then for the PDM parties to go into elections with a care taker federal, provincial govt, COAS, President and CJP they are all comfortable with.

Only hope now is for the CJP, Supreme Court, people inside the army to stand up fearlessly and ofcourse the people of Pakistan to come out and be ready to put everything on the line and ofcourse the international establishment i.e. the US, UK, Saudia Arabia, UAE, China stepping in and providing a win-win solution for all.

IK should learn from PML N and PPP where they have bounced back from torrid relations with the establishment. Nawaz burnt numerous bridges with various army chiefs and after the panama case everyone was off the opinion he was finished, but look at the situation today, he has his man as the COAS who his following his each and every dictat. Maybe best for IK to play the waiting game because there is no telling what will happen a few years later.

Its not easy to simply lock him up or disqualify his party. It may be their plan but its a difficult one to implement. Khan enjoys massive support and a strong team. The only way to end this drama is to call elections. This is not 80’s anymore where you can hide behind PTV and fabricate stories in your favour. PDM at the moment is also crapping in their pants because Khan has made their jeena marna hell.

If they lock Khan up which seems impossible - will the PDM crooks fight elections amongst their own team? Which party will they fight against?

80% of Pakistan supports Khan and 90-95% overseas Pakistanis.

Despite their crackdown - social media is full of crooks torturing women.

It won't be difficult at all. They can either lock him in or keep him out without his cadre. They are just playing with him at this point. They won't call the elections. Do you think there will be an uprising when people fear for their lives ? Who can take on their army and win ?

Two main leaders, eight ex-MPAs also quit PTI
PTI suffered more losses when its two main leaders and eight former members of Punjab assembly from south Punjab announced quitting the party in the wake of May-9 incidents

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) suffered more losses on Thursday when its two main leaders and eight former members of the Punjab assembly from south Punjab announced quitting the party in the wake of May-9 incidents.

PTI senior leader and former head of the ‘Billion tree tsunami’ project Malik Amin Aslam announced parting ways with Imran Khan, saying now the party was heading in a destructive direction.

Speaking at a news conference at National Press Club Islamabad, ex-advisor to former premier Imran Khan said after watching video clips of violent attacks on army installations and private buildings on May 9, he decided he could not go with that agenda anymore.

He said that after the May 9 tragedy, he believed that some black sheep would have been responsible for such incidents, and they would be removed from the party through self-accountability. But, he regretted, nothing of sort had happened so far. He contended that the party should be held accountable for what happened on May 9.

“Wherever protest demonstrations were made, their targets were military installations. This agenda is like fulfilling the dream of the enemies. On May 9, the party workers took the law into their hands, and the party leadership should have investigated all that,” he added.

Malik Amin, who hails from Attock, said the events of May 9 shocked people like him and what had happened was before everyone.

Separately, PTI deputy information secretary and member of the core committee Dr Muhammad Amjad announced on Thursday he was also quitting the party in the wake of May 9 incidents.

He told a news conference in federal capital that he was stepping down from all the party’s three posts i.e. deputy information secretary, member PTI core committee and Chairman Imran Khan’s focal person for trade unions.

Referring to May 9 incidents, he said: “If people of the country are worried about what you do, then it is not right.” He regretted how the military installations and civilian properties were attacked and torched and even images and monuments of the martyrs were not spared.

150 odd are fake and fabricated cases. At least our courts will have some shame to not treat our national hero and convict him on fake charges.

Supposedly Khan is thrown in jail or gets disqualified - who will the crooks fight election against? Against what party?

Where do you see this all going?

I believe at some point International powers will intervene and tell all parties involved to calm down and give elections a chance.

Absolutely not

It's all about time. If Khan somehow gets through the month of May without getting arrested then things will start patching up again for him. All he now has to do is keep patience as his patience will be tested again.

The writing is on the wall. Just look at the TV channels and social media and how the military has succeeded in intimidating the public. Nobody was expecting the military's reaction after May 9 to be this severe and extreme.

By the way, no international power would intervene and most countries including KSA, US and the UAE dislike Khan.

Whoever takes the decision on Imran needs to know this.

May not sit well with you but plenty younger ones will step up. In fact, am glad that this lot is leaving so we get proper leaders who believe in PTI's mission and not those looking for a seat.

I don't mind different views but if you wish to troll, then you will find your comments will be removed.

I really do not think people jumping ship is an issue for PTI. The entire party is all about Imran. As long as Imran Khan is there people would vote for PTI regardless of actual candidate protesting the election. I do not endorse this view as I personally believe the voters should vote for candidate + party rather than just party. However this is the reality.

If Imran is able to survive this storm and somehow stay in the game till June then he would have a golden opportunity to become PM again with his majority.

The reason I say June is because Pakistan is silently walking towards an inevitable default and its likely Pakistan will default on upcoming $3.5bn+ debt repayments in June. Should that happen all the attention would shift over economy situation which would eat PDM alive. Upcoming weeks are extremely important for Imran Khan to showcase tremendous patience which would be difficult but is the need of the hour.

Whoever takes the decision on Imran needs to know this.

FweOLhHXoAEVM-v

These are very important numbers. At the moment the instability related news is generating most of the headlines and talk programs but people really need to wake up and smell the coffee here that Pakistan is on verge of economical collapse. Even the great Soviet power with a massive military establishment were not able to survive the economical collapse so hopes with Pakistan are much more dim.

The reason I say economical collapse is simply because the country is just not generating any income/forex reserves. Today Brecorder published that foreign borrowings for the first 10 months have been a paltry $8.1bn which were budgeted to be $22bn for the fiscal year and in same 10 month comparison in PY these were $13bn (a drop of over 35%). This is a staggering drop for a country barely surviving. Some other economical indicators are:

1. Remittances have seen a drop of 30% from year on year. This is despite the fact that exchange rates have significantly worsened. The black market that exists between government official banking rates and hawala system is widening that deepened this crisis and is again widening now which will again deepen the crisis.

2. Exports have dropped significantly by over 10% in the report issued for nine months to March of this fiscal year. SBP on that note has also curtailed the imports quite drastically by 25% which has bought down the overall trade deficit but has led to shutdown of major companies and especially large manufacturing plants leading to a massive unemployment, inflation and further pressure on economy.

3. Interest rates - Every other month or quarter we see the central borrowing rate increased by 2% or so. Latest was that interest is pipped to 21% which is simply mind boggling. Who would do business when terms of business are so unfavourable hence a lot of companies simply shutting down or moving their operations out of Pakistan where possible. The ease of doing business in Pakistan is taking another massive hit.

I have not touched inflation, unemployment or FDI yet which is another indicator of dying economy.

The point I'm trying to make is that people who support Imran Khan can only bring Pakistan out of this economical mess because these are educated middle class employees in Pakistan and most of the overseas Pakistani. The significant inflows to the economy is driven by these individuals through taxes in Pakistan and remittances from abroad. To simply cut off these people by taking Imran out of equation is simply cutting off Pakistan's breathing pipe. I hope sanity prevails for the better of the country.

PTI leader Jai Parkash has announced that he is quitting the party. Addressing the media in Karachi, he condemned the violence that took place in the country following the arrest of ex-premier Imran Khan.

He said that what had started off as a peaceful protest on May 9, turned into an attack in which army installations were targeted. He said that he did not know who the people involved in the attacks were and called for carrying out an investigation to punish those responsible.

Mazari cites health concerns, daughter’s ordeal as reasons for quitting politics

Shireen Mazari, who was one of the most prominent leaders of the PTI and was arrested multiple times in recent days, has cited health issues and and the ordeal that her daughter, Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir, had to go through while she continued to be “abducted and released” multiple times as reasons for her quitting active politics.

Addressing a press conference, she announced that she would not be part of the PTI or any other party from now onwards.

She further said her husband had passed away five months ago. “When Dr Tabish was alive, I could have many things, as he was there for the children as well.

“My children, mother and health are now my priority.”

Shah Mahmood Qureshi, PTI's Vice Chairman and Number Two after Imran Khan is also quitting the party.

I think IK should also quit PTI and condemn the violence on 9th of May. That will make everything infinitely more interesting. Maybe register a new party for the election with a team of young people who have no one but themselves to take care of. The ones who can safely say that ‘apnay agay na peechay, na koi oper neechay, ronay wala, na koi ronay wali janab-e-Ali’.

This is what happens with lotas.

The defectors that became "imported government" or bajwas agents, or American spies were also lotas.

Although tbf I am surprised at SMQ. Fawad I would have been less surprised.

dissolving punjab was the biggest suicidal decision in politics.

Imran basically took off his pads and helmet and let the opposition bowl bouncers at him to prove some sort of moral point.

Tasting jail before is not the issue. It's the threats of torture, tape, harassment to immediate family members ie wives, children which is the problem.

I would have seen how Zardari would have responded if his children were also incarcerated and being subject to the same torture and if that didn't break him.

Fayyazul Hassan Chohan quits PTI

Farrukh Habib bids adieu to PTI, joins IPP

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf now-former senior leader and former federal minister Farrukh Habib decided to part ways with PTI.

While addressing a press conference at the Jahangir Tareen-led Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party's (IPP) head office on Monday, he announced to join the IPP.

He condemned the May 9 riots mentioning politics on the basis of agitation against institutions was harmful for the country and highlighted the need to work for the betterment of country.

Habib also mentioned that PTI chief was ousted from power through the vote of no-confidence which was absolutely constitutional. He expressed his opinion and said the PTI should have gone democratic struggle and waited for polls.

“I realised that we took our real struggle to the path of violence. We stepped away from Pakistan which was envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam,” the former minister said.

He said after PDM came into power, the PTI started a violent movement by taking onto the streets while blaming the PTI chief that he did not fulfil his responsibility to refrain from creating uncertainty in the country.

The former minister said the PTI chief failed to practically follow the moral high ground in his actions as he too took gifts from the Toshakhana while party leaders used to criticise Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari for taking luxurious items.

He highlighted that the PTI chief failed to uphold merit during his stint in power as many capable individuals were ignored and some handpicked people were given important portfolios.

PTI asks Alvi to initiate dialogue between parties, establishment
PTI leaders seriously regret what was done on May 9 and how the party workers had reacted to the arrest of Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Some PTI leaders have approached President Dr Arif Alvi to make an effort for a dialogue between political parties including the PTI and the establishment.

The PTI sources say that President Alvi in principle agrees to the idea but it is not sure whether he would go for it or not. There is a lot of frustration within the PTI for the post-May 9 situation it is facing but the party is not getting any chance to return to normal politics.

Background interactions with some of the PTI leaders show that irrespective of what is the stated policy of PTI regarding May 9, the party leaders seriously regret what was done on May 9 and how the party workers had reacted to the arrest of Imran Khan. “I wish it had never happened,” a PTI source said, adding that the May 9 events have badly damaged the party.

Ali Muhammad Khan, one of the few PTI leaders who still appear on TV talk shows to represent the party, confirmed to The News that he recently contacted President Alvi and requested him to initiate a dialogue process between political parties including the PTI and the establishment. He said that President Alvi in principle agrees to this but Ali Muhammad Khan is not sure whether he would take the initiative or not.

‘Grand dialogue’ floated to revive PTI’s fortunes
ISLAMABAD / LAHORE: Almost a week after President Arif Alvi urged stakeholders to end bitterness to pave the way for democracy, the PTI on Tuesday proposed a ‘Grand National Reconciliation Dialogue’ among all stakeholders, while its leaders separately called on the president and the caretaker information minister.

According to a statement by the President House, PTI leaders Raoof Hassan and Barrister Umair called on Mr Alvi at the Presidency.

The meeting between the president and PTI leaders prompted speculations in the media, and reports claimed that the two leaders delivered a message of the PTI chairman to the president.

Mr Hassan, however, denied that he shared a message from Mr Khan in the meeting.

In the past, President Alvi had made several attempts to restore ties between the establishment and his party chairman. Recently, PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah claimed in a TV programme that PTI Chairman Imran Khan was trying to mend his ties with the establishment.

Though only a two-line statement was released from the President’s House, Mr Hassan, who is the PTI information secretary, told Dawn the meeting was a “normal” and “routine” one.

“I used to meet the president quite frequently and today’s meeting was also a routine one,” he said, adding: “It is totally wrong that I passed any message of the chairman to the president.”

The current political situation and issues of national importance were discussed in the meeting, he added.

Reconciliation dialogue

In a separate development, PTI leader Shafqat Mahmood and caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi met in Lahore, wherein the former proposed a ‘Grand National Reconciliation Dialogue’ among all stakeholders ahead of the next general elections.

They are just lazy. Want someone to do all the hard work for them. If they cannot stand up for him, there is no hope for Pakistan. It will continue to be an Army controlled state, because the people have kept all their bravado for India, and make excuses when it comes to fighting for their own rights and fighting for the man who has been the greatest living Pakistani. Even the commies in India are better when it comes to standing up for a cause.

Judicial Magistrate Imran Abid extended Parvez Elahi's physical remand by two days.

According to the spokesman Anti-Corruption Establishment Punjab, anti-corruption is investigating Chaudhry Parvez Elahi in the case of illegal appointments in the Punjab Assembly. Anti-corruption alleges that Chaudhry Pervez Elahi and others made illegal appointments based on merit.

A special court allowed on Thursday Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vice chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi to be relocated to a hospital after his condition reportedly deteriorated.

The permission was granted by Justice Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain - hearing the cypher case against Qureshi and PTI chief Imran Khan - on the request of prison authorities. The jail authorities informed the judge that the PTI leader should be allowed to move as per the doctor's recommendation.

The former foreign minister was not immediately being transferred to the hospital, clarified Qureshi’s counsel, Taimur Malik. He said the permission was taken as a precautionary measure; he will be transferred if his condition worsens.

The cypher case

The cypher case pertains to a document waved by Imran, then the prime minister, at a public rally in March last year, terming it evidence of a foreign conspiracy behind the no-confidence motion he faced at that time. The motion was carried a few weeks later and Imran’s government ended.

Earlier, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) submitted a list of 28 witnesses in the cypher case against the PTI chairman and vice chairman, according to a copy of the indictment.

The special court deferred the indictment of the two leaders until October 23. FIA Prosecutor Shah Khawar informed the court that copies of the indictment papers, or challan, had been handed over to the accused.

Earlier in October, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) clubbed Imran’s other petitions, seeking dismissal of the case and stopping his trial by the special court, established under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).

The PTI chairman filed another plea in the IHC seeking exemption under the Article 248. In the petition, it was stated that the Section 5 of the OSA did not apply to the cypher case.

The court had issued a notice to the FIA and sought its response by Monday (today). The court also clubbed the petition with Imran’s other pleas against the case.

Imran had also filed a separate petition with the IHC challenging the FIA's request to hold the case's proceedings inside the jail premises. However, the high court disposed of the plea last week after observing that an in-camera trial was in the PTI chief's favour, asking him to approach the trial court regarding the matter.

PTI dissident Ghulam Sarwar joins Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party

LAHORE: PTI dissident Ghulam Sarwar Khan on Thursday formally joined the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).

Talking to the media on the occasion, Ghulam Sarwar Khan stressed the goal of building a strong and prosperous Pakistan.

He acknowledged the role of various individuals, including Jahangir Tareen and Aleem Khan, in PTI’s development.

The seasoned politician from Taxila tehsil of Rawalpindi expressed regret over not achieving a prosperous Pakistan and emphasised the importance of giving back to the country.

IPP chief Jahangir Tareen and President Abdul Aleem Khan welcomed Ghulam Sarwar by donning him with a party muffler.

Ghulam Sarwar Khan group’s politicians from Taxila, Wah and Rawalpindi, including former MNA Mansoor Hayat Khan, former MPA Amar Siddique Khan, former PA candidates Chaudhry Muhammad Afzal, Malik Azmat Mehmood, former chairmen and many others also officially announced to join the IPP.

Asad Umar resigns from PTI, 'completely' quits politics

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lost another senior leader on Saturday after former planning minister Asad Umar resigned from the party’s basic membership, announcing to quit politics too.

Asad had earlier resigned as the party’s secretary general following the May 9 riots.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the former minister wrote, “After more than one decade in public life, I have decided to completely quit politics.” Having once been a close aide to PTI chairman Imran Khan, the former minister also announced letting go off his basic membership of the PTI.
Umar is the latest in a series of PTI leaders who have resigned from the party following a nationwide crackdown on it, with numerous prominent leaders arrested in response to the May 9 riots that ensued after Imran's arrest on the day.

Since his press conference on May 24, where he denounced the events of May 9 and announced his resignation from party positions, Umar has not shown any inclination to join other parties, including the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party or the PTI Parliamentarians, both of which have been actively accepting PTI defectors.

In reference to his press conference, Umar added in his tweet that he had previously made it clear publicly that he disagrees with “the policy of confrontation with state institutions.”

He expressed concern that such a policy has resulted in a serious clash between state institutions, which is not in the best interests of the country. Umar took the opportunity to express gratitude to those who supported him in his public life, particularly acknowledging the NA-54 team and the voters who elected him twice.

"I have made every effort to serve the constituency from which I was elected. May Allah's blessings be upon the Pakistani nation,” the former minister concluded.

LAHORE: Over 100 more workers of jailed prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party have been arrested in Pakistan's Punjab province capital Lahore in connection with attacks on military installations in May, police said on Sunday.

"We have arrested 105 PTI workers wanted in the attacks on Lahore Corps Commander House and Askari Tower (allegedly owned by the son of former army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa) in different parts of the city on Saturday," a Lahore police statement said on Sunday.

It said a crackdown has been launched against around 1,000 PTI workers who still managed to escape the arrest in connection with the May 9 attacks.

On May 9, violent protests erupted after the arrest of Khan by paramilitary Rangers from the premises of the Islamabad High Court. His party workers vandalised a dozen military installations, including the Jinnah House (Lahore Corps Commander house), Mianwali airbase and the ISI building in Faisalabad. The Army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi was also attacked by the mob for the first time.

All these arrests would put a huge question mark on the credibility of the upcoming elections.

The Special Central Court in Lahore ordered to seizure of all assets and bank accounts of former federal minister Moonis Elahi – son of PTI President Parvez Elahi – in a money laundering case, ARY News reported on Friday.

According to the details, the special court in Lahore declared the former federal minister Moonis Elahi fugitive as he failed to appear before the court.

The court has demanded a comprehensive report on the freezing of accounts and assets to be presented at the next hearing.

It is pertinent to mention here that, a non-bailable warrant was issued for Moonis Elahi during the last hearing.

The court revealed that a report on compliance with the warrant at the residence of Moonis Elahi in London is pending while he was also absent from his home in Spain.

The court expressed satisfaction with the report that the former minister is deliberately evading the arrest while seeking assistance from the relevant institution in the case.

Following the court’s order, a total of eight bank accounts and six properties linked to Monis Elahi were seized immediately.

A special court in Lahore on Thursday summoned former federal minister Moonis Elahi – son of PTI President Parvez Elahi – in money laundering case on October 23, ARY News reported.

Moonis Elahi is accused of corruption of billions of rupees in development projects across Punjab. On July 22, the Lahore district court declared Moonis Elahi an absconder over his continued absence in the money laundering case.

Elahi’s counsel submitted his attorney in the court of the special central judge in Lahore. The court ordered Moonis Elahi’s counsel to present his client before the court on October 23 as it is mandatory to present the accused in criminal cases.

The former federal minister left Pakistan last year after the registration of multiple cases against him.

Another PTI leader jumps ship, joins IPP

LAHORE: In what can be seen as another setback for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), one of its members and former special assistant to the prime minister, Ali Nawaz Awan, made a notable switch on Sunday by joining the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), which is led by the influential figure in the sugar industry, Jahangir Khan Tareen, as reported by Express News.

Awan is not the first member of PTI to join the emerging political entity. The IPP predominantly comprises former members of the ruling party, many of whom have parted ways with PTI, especially in the wake of the unrest on May 9.

The incident prompted several senior PTI leaders to relinquish their basic party memberships and align themselves with the IPP.

Awan, who had a significant role within the PTI, reportedly met with IPP’s patron-in-chief Jahangir Tareen and President Aleem Dar to convey his decision to part ways with the PTI.

Awan was welcomed by both Jahangir Tareen and Aleem Khan in Lahore for joining the party.

The meeting, which marked Awan's official transition, was attended by Aun Chaudhry and other leaders of IPP.

The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Tuesday indicted prominent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including former provincial minister Dr Yasmin Rashid, Senator Ijaz Chaudhry, and former MPA Rubina Jamil, in connection with the May 9 riots that erupted following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in a graft case from the premises of the Islamabad High Court.

The PTI leaders stand accused of inciting the public to set ablaze police vans in front of Rahat Bakery in Lahore.

In today's hearing, the court granted the prosecution permission to frame charges against the accused. However, the accused did not plead guilty and have opted to contest the charges.

The ATC judge has set December 16 for further proceedings in the case.

The First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against PTI leaders, workers and social media activists implicate them in a series of violent incidents, including attacks on the Corps Commander House (Jinnah House), Askari Tower, the Shadman police station, as well as creating law and order issues, promoting anarchy, setting ablaze police vans, arson, damaging public properties, injuring police officials, and torching PML-N offices in Model Town.

Initially, the Punjab police registered FIRs across Punjab under specific sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). However, additional sections were later added to the FIRs, including charges such as waging or attempting to wage war against Pakistan, abetting mutiny, criminal conspiracy, and rioting.

The FIRs now include sections 121 (waging or attempting to wage a war or abetting in waging war against Pakistan), 131 (abetting mutiny, or attempting to seduce a soldier, sailor or airman from his duty), and 146 (rioting) of the PPC. Further sections incorporated later include 120 (concealing design to commit an offense punishable with imprisonment), 120-A (definition of criminal conspiracy), 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), 121-A (conspiracy to commit offenses punishable by Section 121), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups, etc), 153-B (inducing students, etc, to take part in political activity), and 107 (abetment of a thing) of the PPC.

The joint investigation teams, formed to probe these incidents, have identified hundreds of PTI activists, including the former premier and other party leaders, as prime suspects and the alleged masterminds behind the May 9 incidents in a dozen FIRs registered against them.

PTI accounts may be scrutinised again

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday reserved its decision on a petition seeking scrutinising once again the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf accounts.

A two-member bench, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, heard the prohibited funding case against the PTI.

During the proceedings, petitioner Khalid Mehmood Advocate appeared before the bench, claiming that the PTI was still receiving funds from abroad.

“Even after the ECP’s 2022 decision, the series of prohibited funding continues.”

On Aug 2 that year, the ECP had finally announced its ruling in the long-awaited, cliffhanger case of the PTI's prohibited funding, ruling that the party did indeed receive illegal funding. It had also issued a notice to the PTI asking why the funds should not be confiscated.

A three-member ECP bench, headed by CEC Raja, had announced the verdict in a case filed by PTI’s founding member Akbar S Babar which had been pending since Nov 14, 2014.

Imran’s lawyer Sher Afzal Khan Marwat appointed PTI senior vice president

Sher Afzal Khan Marwat, a member of PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s legal team, was appointed a senior vice president of the party on Wednesday.

The party’s official account shared the notification for Marwat’s appointment, which was signed by Secretary General Omar Ayub, on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The party said that the lawyer had been appointed senior vice president “with immediate effect”.

Marwat said his new responsibilities would motivate him to work harder. “I am indebted to PTI Chairman Imran Khan for his trust in me,” he said.

He looks to be a person who will stay loyal with his party. PTI need competent people in the party to make good plans for the upcoming general elections as the party chairman is still in Jail.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday ordered the PTI to hold intra-party elections within 20 days to retain bat as its poll symbol.

In August, the commission had given a final warning to the PTI to hold the polls or it could be declared ineligible to obtain an election symbol.

It had stated that the elections were due on June 13, 2021 under the party’s constitution but a year’s extension had been granted.

Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, representing the PTI, had said the party elections were held before an amendment in its constitution. However, the CEC claimed that the PTI amended its constitution on June 8, 2022 and conducted intra-party polls on June 10, 2022. Khan had also said the amendment in the party constitution was later withdrawn.

The polls organising authority had said it issued a final notice to the PTI in May 2022 to ensure the conduct of intra-party elections “on or before June 13, 2022 (extended date), with the observation that no further extension shall be allowed”.

Subsequently, the PTI submitted a copy of the amended party’s constitution that was deemed “insufficient” by the electoral body.

In October, the ECP had reserved its verdict on the maintainability of a petition by the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party seeking to take away PTI’s ‘bat’ electoral symbol.

Days later, the PTI formally appealed to the electoral body to immediately issue a detailed written order regarding the intra-party elections and poll symbol allocation. The PTI had claimed that the ECP had accepted there had been a misunderstanding and that the elections were held on June 9, 2022.

A four-member commission, headed by Nisar Ahmed Durrani and including Shah Mohammad Jatoi, Babar Hassan Bharwana, and Justice (rtd) Ikramullah Khan, had presided over the proceedings of the case.

Today, announcing its reserved verdict on the matter, the ECP directed the PTI to hold the intra-party elections and submit a report to the commission within seven days of it.

The written verdict stated: “We are confirmed in our views that the respondent party failed to hold, transparent just and fair intra-party election in accordance with its prevailing constitution 2019 allegedly held on 10-06-2022, which is highly disputed/objectionable, which could not be accepted at all.”

The order said that instead of invoking section 215(5) (eligibility of party to obtain election symbol) of the Elections Act 2017, the ECP was taking a “lenient view” by directing it to hold the intra-party polls “strictly in accordance with the prevailing party constitution, within 20 days positively”.

“Its result along with all the required documents, including Form 65, shall be submitted thereafter the election within seven days before the commission,” it added.

The verdict then warned that in case of failure to hold the polls, the PTI would “suffer the penal consequences of Section 215(5) of the Elections Act 2017 accordingly and would be ineligible to obtain an election symbol for election to Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament), etc”.

The ECP highlighted that the documents provided by the chief election commissioner had “made the alleged intra-party election highly objectionable [and] dubious”.

It added there was a “glaring, un-explained contradiction, in regard to holding of intra-party election, as to whether the same was held” on June 8, 2022 or June 9 or June 10 that year.

Noting that after the polls were held, the party was supposed to submit a “certificate signed by the office bearers authorised by the party head”, the ECP said “no such authentic attested copy of document related to amendment in the 2019 constitution and of PTI intra-party election allegedly held on June 6, 2022 was provided till Aug 18, 2022”.

The verdict stated that Form-65 was submitted before the ECP on Aug 18, 2022, which was “much after the prescribed period” and cast “serious doubts” over holding of the intra-party elections on June 8, 2022.

PTI counsel ‘upset’ at verdict

Barrister Khan said he was “extremely upset” by today’s verdict, adding that the requirements of justice were not met.

Speaking to the media outside the ECP office in Islamabad today, he claimed the verdict had been delayed for a “special purpose”.

The lawyer said the ECP’s notice had not stated that the intra-party elections were not according to the PTI’s constitution. Instead, Khan asserted, the notice was about the polls’ documentation being incomplete.

Khan added that the polls were held correctly and in an open manner, along with complete documentation. He said he would challenge the order before the relevant forums.

The lawyer expressed “satisfaction” that according to today’s verdict, the bat was “our (PTI’s) symbol, it still is and it will remain on the ballot paper”.

PTI plea

Submitted through Barrister Ali Zafar, the PTI had said the ECP had accepted that on March 28 some misunderstanding had led to the passing of the order as to whether the party’s August 2022 constitution had been withdrawn or the intra-party election.

It said that after a hearing and submission of affidavits, the ECP had accepted that only the constitution of August 2022 had been withdrawn.

It further said the intra-party elections of PTI were duly held on June 9, 2022, in pursuance of the party’s 2019 constitution, amended up to June 8, 2022.

This was why when the matter came up for a final hearing on Aug 30 this year, “the ECP accepted PTI’s submissions and orally announced its decision that the elections were duly held on June 9, 2022, and, therefore, the matter stood resolved”, the application had said.

“This was also widely reported in the media. The matter hence stood finally concluded on Aug 30, 2023, and it was only observed that a detailed order will be issued soon in this regard,” it had stated.

It had noted that after the announcement of the oral order, more than 41 days have passed but no order has been provided.

What elections have the Nooras ever held or the PPP or Diesel. I would get IK to tell the members to vote for his nominations in a single day.

PTI urges ‘practical steps’ for level playing field

ISLAMABAD: PTI has called upon the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to fulfil its constitutional duty of ensuring “a level playing field” for all parties contesting the general elections.

A statement by a PTI spokesperson said the chief election commissioner’s letters to federal and provincial caretaker governments for providing a level playing field to political parties were “inadequate”.

The letters “served no purpose” as PTI witnessed no let-up in the “ongoing oppression and suppression” against its leaders and supporters.

The party demanded the electoral watchdog take “effective, practical and tangible steps” and use its constitutional powers.

PTI spokesperson claimed the country was facing the worst constitutional and legal crises, and concrete steps, instead of letters, were required.

The party is not allowed to hold political activities anywhere, and the coverage of most PTI leaders, including Imran Khan, was prohibited, the spokesperson said.

PTI workers are being compelled to part ways with the party after their enforced disappearances, and this practice “continues unabated”. “The state’s plans to keep PTI out of the electoral race were the talk of town.”

Most PTI leaders have been locked up without any crime and were not being released, the statement said, adding that ECP should do more than just issuing verbal orders and issuing letters.

Every election has produced some new terminologies and this time it will be a Level-playing field stuff. Until some 3rd party is not poking its nose into the election, these elections will never be fair.

After all the billions spent the Establishment and their puppets no one is changing to support them. Such is the pain and humiliation of these losers, they can't get 10 genuine people to attend a genuine members of the public. Sooner or later you will hear the elections have been stopped.

PTI ‘founding member’ asks workers to step up for internal polls

ISLAMABAD: While Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has been demanding a level playing field for upcoming general elections, one of the party’s “founding members” has started efforts for free and transparent intra-party elections so that workers and leaders of the party would get equal opportunities.

Akbar S. Babar has been part of the PTI since the party’s inception and was once considered very close to Imran Khan. However, he took the foreign funding case to the ECP on Nov 14, 2014, after he developed differences with the PTI chief over alleged corruption and abuse of laws governing political funding.

“In 1997, the PTI had an election symbol of chirag [lamp] and I was the one who suggested to Imran Khan that the party symbol should be a cricket bat because it went with his image. I was the one who submitted documents/application with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to get the electoral symbol in August 2002 and I have all relevant documents,” Akbar S. Babar told Dawn.

“I urge the devoted workers of PTI to come forward for the transparent elections within the party because only after holding free and fair intra-party elections, can the party demand free and fair general elections,” he said.

In a statement, Mr Babar advised party workers to come forward for the fair elections as per directions of the ECP within the next 20 days.

“If transparent elections would not be held it will become difficult to retain the symbol of bat for upcoming elections,” he warned. He said that workers should come forward to save the party from complete disaster and start a countrywide contact campaign, which has been announced by Mr Babar.

He also said that the workers should play their role to stop another attempt to hijack the party. He said that soon central and provincial election commissions of the PTI would be established.

He also stressed that the PTI’s election commission should announce the intra-party elections at the earliest and voter lists should also be issued at national, provincial, and district levels. Mr Babar said that corrupt and incompetent leadership was the reason for so much loss to the party.

Without Imran Khan, PTI is nothing. I hope Imran Khan gets out of Jail before the election and make a decent election campaign before the 2024 general elections.

Would things have been different had IK handled the matter not with emotions/ego but with brain and sensibility.
