Imran Khan's former adviser suffers acid attack in UK
An adviser to the jailed ex-Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan says he was the victim of an acid attack outside his home in the UK.
Mirza Shahzad Akbar said the chemical used in the attack missed his eyes but caused injuries on his body.
Police said they were investigating. No one has been arrested.
Mr Akbar was an adviser to Mr Khan, who was removed from office last year and is in prison on numerous charges that he says are politically motivated.
Pakistani authorities deny this.
In a post in Urdu on X, formerly Twitter, Mr Akbar said "the attacker threw an acid solution on me and ran away".
"I will not be intimidated nor bow down to those who are doing this," he said in another post in English.
He told the BBC he had received numerous threats in the UK since fleeing Pakistan with his family.
Mr Akbar said his brother had been forcibly disappeared in Pakistan before re-emerging months later.
He said the alleged acid attack was part of these threats, but refused to say who he thought was responsible.
Mr Akbar added that the chemical caused injuries on his arms and the top of his head, but missed his eyes.
Hertfordshire police said officers had been called to reports of an assault on Sunday afternoon where "it was believed an acidic solution was used".
It said a man received hospital treatment and had now been discharged, adding it believed it to be an isolated incident.
The force said enquiries were continuing, and urged witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.
The BBC is not publishing the full location of the alleged attack in the interests of the safety of Mr Akbar and his family.
Mr Akbar served as a cabinet minister in the government of Mr Khan, who was removed from office in 2022 in a parliamentary vote of no confidence.
Mr Khan, the former cricketing star turned politician, is now in prison in Pakistan facing numerous charges.
His lawyers say there are more than 100 against him, including allegedly leaking state secrets and organising violent protests.

Imran Khan's ‘handpicked Barrister Gohar’ to contest for PTI chairman slot
Barrister Gohar Khan will be the candidate for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s chairmanship, PTI Senior Vice-President Sher Afzal Marwat confirmed late Tuesday, hours after Imran Khan decided against retaining the top post due to legal hurdles as the party heads towards internal polls.
“Barrister Gohar will be the PTI's candidate for chairmanship. The PTI chairman [Imran] has said that Gohar will be his candidate for the post,” Marwat said during his conversation with a private news channel, as Imran remains behind bars in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail and entangled in legal battles.
Although several party leaders had confirmed that, in a rather surprising development, Imran would not be contesting the intra-party elections, they had claimed that the final candidate would be announced later on.
This development will mark an end to Imran’s tenure at the key position since the party’s formation more than two decades back.
The PTI’s Core Committee on Monday gave formal approval to hold the intra-party polls within the time frame of 20 days given by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). If the party does not follow the orders, it will lose its bat symbol.
The reason behind Imran’s nonparticipation is his disqualification as a parliamentarian for five years in the Toshakhana case since he was found to be involved in “corrupt practices by hiding the benefits he accrued from the national exchequer wilfully and intentionally”.
Despite Marwat and other leaders’ announcement, the PTI had claimed that there were no such plans for Imran to step down from his position.
The PTI, in a statement on X, strongly rebutted the “speculations” over the election of a new party chairman.
“Discussions are ongoing on all the important issues regarding the holding of intra-party elections,” it added.
This will be a huge development for the party as the country moves towards general elections, set to take place on February 8, 2024. It will be a challenge for the party to secure votes if Imran remains behind bars.
Who is Gohar Khan?
According to the PTI leader’s website, he is an advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and appears in all high courts as well.
He is a law graduate from Wolverhampton University, UK with LLM from Washington School of Law, USA. Gohar has been in active law practice with more than 50 reported judgments to his credit on subjects ranging from taxation, commercial, corporate, arbitration, banking, election, etc.
The PTI leader has civil and criminal trials experience, and even has the honour to appear before the Supreme Judicial Council, Field General Court Martial, and its Court of Appeal.
His clients include public and private companies and important persons, including Imran.
Gohar was a member of the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian and contested elections for the National Assembly in 2008, however, he lost. He then joined the PTI in July 2022.

PTI’s Afzal Marwat spills the beans on why Barrister Gohar was picked for chairmanship
PTI’s Senior Vice President Sher Afzal Khan Marwat has said that the party will prefer giving tickets to lawyers as leadership believes that lawyers will lead from the front in the current political atmosphere.
“Barrister Gohar Khan was picked as the party’s chairman for the intra-party polls because Imran Khan believes lawyers will be able to counter the crackdown against the party,” he told Munizae Jahangir on Spot Light.
On retaining the ‘bat’ as an electoral symbol, Marwat said that the Election Commission will have no excuse to refuse to allot the PTI its electoral symbol once it holds intra-party elections.
“The [ECP] decision was also unjustified. It was only aimed at taking Khan out of this [chairman] office or disputing the tickets awarded by the party for upcoming elections,” the PTI leader added.
On intra-party elections, he said that Khan had ordered him to announce Barrister Gohar Khan’s name for the slot of chairman today (Wednesday) 2:00pm.
“We thought we could be trapped in two matters. Either they will take our electoral symbol from us or they could say at any moment that the party’s tickets were controversial and force our candidates to contest elections independently,” he added.
According to Marwat, Khan immediately decided to nominate Barrister Gohar Khan as the party chairman when the team met him yesterday (Tuesday) and told him about the legal complications.
Along with the party chairmanship, Khan also decided that no member of his family would take part in the intra-party elections, he said.
Marwat said that the former prime minister has given him the responsibility to organise rallies and party conventions across the country.
“You all saw how Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rose when we held workers’ conventions in the province. We are now going to Punjab and it will also rise with us,” he added.
Khan’s legal aide Naeem Haider Panjutha said that the party leadership had decided on the name of Barrister Khan for the slot of party chairman.
However, several teams met him on different occasions which made all of it confusing, he added.
“Khan told us to deny the news of picking Barrister Gohar Khan’s name when we met him. The reason for it was our pending application at the Islamabad High Court which has been fixed for tomorrow,” Panjutha said.
He was of the view that Barrister Khan was an acceptable choice for all leaders and workers of the party.
“He has been with the party through thick and thin. When Khan was arrested on May 9, he was standing with the PTI chief,” he said.

A local court in Lahore on Saturday extended physical remand of former Punjab chief minister and PTI president Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in an illegal appointment case for two more days, ARY News reported.
The ACE Lahore produced PTI President Pervaiz Elahi before a local court today and sought his physical remand in the Punjab Assembly appointments case.
The judicial magistrate Imran Abid approved the ACE plea and extended Ealhi’s remand for two more days.
Elahi is among several PTI leaders and workers who had been arrested amid the crackdown on the PTI leadership following the violent riots in the country after party chairman Imran Khan’s first arrest on May 9.
Later, he was arrested multiple times again after multiple other cases including the illegal appointments cases were opened against him.

The former first lady recalls a recent incident when Khan's sisters raised concerns about the handling of a case related to Khan's safety in Attock jail. She went on to say that the presence of the sisters created complications.
In October, Bushra had filed a petition in Islamabad High Court (IHC) through Khosa, expressing concerns that her husband could be poisoned in prison.
She stated that tampering with her husband's food could be detrimental to his life, emphasising that Khan is not being provided with the facilities to which he is entitled, as per the prison manual.
In the leaked audio, Bushra disclosed that she informed Khan's sisters about hiring Khosa as her lawyer for all her cases, particularly those experiencing delays.
Khosa responded by saying that Khan's sisters had accused him of misbehaving with them.
Bushra, recounting the sisters' words, stated, "They said he (Khosa) misbehaved with us that we could never think about someone having the courage to do so”. Despite her advice against visiting Khosa's office, she noted that Khan's sisters insisted on doing so.
In response to the allegations, Khosa defended himself on the call, stating, "I'm not the one to misbehave. I asked them to stop repeatedly insisting. Let me do it the way I find appropriate. This is what they are calling misbehaviour."
‘Those involved in leak should be ashamed’
Speaking to the media later, Khosa said that those who leaked private conversation between a client and a lawyer should be ashamed of their actions.
"There should be a sense of shame among those who engage in leaking such sensitive and private conversations between a client and their legal representative,” he said.
He said that Justice Babar Sattar had ordered to search for those who were involved in such leaks. “Those who are involved [in leaks] should come forward and tell the court,” he concluded.

Akbar S. Babar hints at approaching ECP against PTI’s intra-party poll process
PTI founding member Akbar S. Babar on Friday raised reservations regarding the party’s operations related to its intra-party poll process, hinting that he would raise the issue with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
On Wednesday, the party had announced that the internal elections it was mandated to carry out as per the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would be held on December 2 (Saturday). The ECP had last week ordered the PTI to hold intra-party elections within 20 days to retain the bat as its poll symbol.
Earlier today, the party began the process of receiving nomination papers for the polls.
Babar also visited the party’s central secretariat in Islamabad along with others. Speaking to reporters, he said the purpose of his visit was to gain information about the intra-party polls, nomination papers and voter list.
“Many founding PTI members with us want to take part in this election and they want to know its procedures and that nomination papers be given to us so we can fully participate in tomorrow’s polls,” he said.
However, he later told Dawn.com that he was informed by the secretariat staff that “they do not have nomination papers, voter list and election rules”, leaving him “confused” about how he would participate in the polls.
Discussing the situation during an appearance on Dawn News show InFocus, Babar said he did not mean to make the intra-party polls controversial.

On Wednesday, the party had announced that the internal elections it was mandated to carry out as per the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would be held on December 2 (Saturday). The ECP had last week ordered the PTI to hold intra-party elections within 20 days to retain the bat as its poll symbol.
Earlier today, the party began the process of receiving nomination papers for the polls.
Babar also visited the party’s central secretariat in Islamabad along with others. Speaking to reporters, he said the purpose of his visit was to gain information about the intra-party polls, nomination papers and voter list.
“Many founding PTI members with us want to take part in this election and they want to know its procedures and that nomination papers be given to us so we can fully participate in tomorrow’s polls,” he said.
However, he later told Dawn.com that he was informed by the secretariat staff that “they do not have nomination papers, voter list and election rules”, leaving him “confused” about how he would participate in the polls.
Discussing the situation during an appearance on Dawn News show InFocus, Babar said he did not mean to make the intra-party polls controversial.

The new PTI chairman also said that PTI had been subjected to unprecedented scrutiny by the Election Commission of Pakistan compared to other political parties.
Gohar asked the chief justice of Pakistan, Justice Qazi Faez Isa, to provide justice to the PTI rather than returning his cars to the government. He was referring to CJP’s decision to return two of government-owned luxury vehicles that his predecessors had used.

The PTI has managed to complete the process of its intra-party elections, but in its haste, it has failed to meet several legal requirements of the polls.
According to legal experts, Akbar S Babar, a PTI founding member who later developed differences with former party chief Imran Khan, has been given the best opportunity to challenge the polls because of the several flaws in the process.
As per the party’s rules, its national council was supposed to conduct the elections, but no formal meeting of the body was held.
No panel was formed before the intra-party elections.
Similarly, neither ballot papers were printed, nor nomination papers advertised.
Besides, no opportunity was provided to the party members for filing their objections over the papers. Most of all, every candidate was elected unopposed.
The nomination papers for the intra-party elections had to be submitted by 3pm on Friday.
When Babar went to the party secretariat to collect the nomination papers and voters list, he was told that the time for submitting the documents had expired.
However, the PTI’s election commission claimed that it had fulfilled all the necessary legal requirements of the intra-party polls and the process would be defended at every forum.

Judge not satisfied with FIA’s handling of Moonis case
LAHORE: A special court (central-I) has expressed dissatisfaction over the pace of the process to declare former federal minister Moonis Elahi a proclaimed offender (PO) in a money laundering case by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
A written order about the previous hearing by the court shows that Judge Tanvir Ahmad Sheikh was not satisfied with a report of the FIA on the proceedings against Moonis under sections 87 and 88 of CrPC.
The report revealed that proclamations had been sent to the residences of the suspect in Spain and the United Kingdom for execution.
The judge, in his order, observed that the report was not satisfactory but rather in violation of the law.
The judge said that no report was received back from the UK, which showed the FIA authorities were not pursuing the matter as per the law.
The judge observed that the FIA wasted precious time of the court as lapses in the process were culpable.
The judge ordered the FIA director to personally pursue the matter strictly in accordance with the law and get the needful done.
The judge would resume further hearing on Dec 14 when Moonis’ lawyer and pleader are directed to produce his client.
The FIA registered the case of alleged money laundering against Moonis and his family after he left the country. His father, PTI president Parvez Elahi, is also behind bars in multiple cases registered against him.
An accountability court has already declared Moonis a proclaimed offender in a case of alleged corruption in development projects.
The NAB accused Moonis of embezzling billions of rupees in the development projects.

He further argued that ECP wrote in the order PTI chairman is a convicted person and could not hold any position in the party.

Akbar S. Babar moves ECP against PTI’s ‘fraudulent’ intra-party polls
PTI founding member Akbar S. Babar on Tuesday moved the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against the party’s intra-party elections, alleging they were “rigged and fraudulent”.
The polls had taken place on Saturday in accordance with the directives issued by the ECP, with Barrister Gohar Ali Khan elected as the new party chairman after being nominated by Imran Khan.
However, the party was on the receiving end of sharp criticism over the polls as Babar announced that he would challenge the whole process in a court of law. He had alleged the PTI had carried out a selection process aimed at throwing out party workers in order to give the reins to a few lawyers. Separately, the leaders of the country’s mainstream parties, including the PML-N and PPP, also questioned the legitimacy of the intra-party elections.
Today, Babar penned a letter to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja. He said that after the commission directed the party to hold the polls, the PTI core committee issued a press release saying that preparations were complete and announced Niazullah Niazi as the PTI CEC.
Babar said the press release did not mention any other names of the PTI Federal Election Commission or share other details of the polls such as the election rules, regulations, detailed schedule of elections, nomination timeline and various other aspects.
He added that the press release also did not specify the vote-counting process or the announcement of election results, further saying that no such information was available on the PTI website until polling day.
Babar said that on Dec 1, he visited the PTI Central Secretariat in Islamabad in the afternoon with other party members but the party representative present at the site had “expressed his helplessness in sharing the required information (nomination papers, voter lists and rules and regulations of the elections) as none existed”.
Commenting on the day of the election, Babar said: “A crowd of a few scores of people, without any prior authentication regarding their status in the party, were assembled in an undisclosed location in Peshawar who shouted: ‘We accept, we accept’.
“The charade was filmed and shown on national television. The same day before noon, the election results were announced to the media. All the candidates were elected unopposed,” he said.
Babar said that “in the absence of basic rules of elections […] the entire intra-party election was a mere eye wash and a vain attempt to hoodwink the ECP”.
He said the “fraudulent” process had “disenfranchised” PTI members from participating in the intra-party elections in clear violation of ECP laws.
Babar added that even representatives of independent organisations such as Pildat had expressed “serious reservations about the transparency” of the intra-party polls.
The founding PTI member said he was left with no other choice than to approach the electoral watchdog and request that it declare the intra-party elections “null and void” while also issuing fresh directives for holding new polls as soon as possible.
Considering the PTI’s “chequered history” in holding intra-party elections, Babar suggested that the ECP appoint independent third-party monitors to review and oversee the process.
Babar further said that the party’s election symbol of the bat be held in abeyance until it conducted transparent polls in accordance with the law.
“It is time that the charade of holding rigged and manipulated intra-party elections must end. All major political parties must be vigorously scrutinised under the relevant laws to allow credible and competent leadership to emerge from within political parties. This is the only way forward for democracy to deliver and meet the challenges confronting society,” he said.

“Why don’t you give them the right to elect their leadership? You talk about a level playing field, why don’t you provide it in your home and to your party members?” he asked.

PTI’s office sealed again
The authorities on Tuesday again sealed the Pakistan Tehreek Insaf central Punjab’s party office just a day after it was opened on court orders. The civil judge Hassan Iqbal on Monday had ordered the authorities to open PTI’s sealed office at Jail Road. The court had sent it’s bailiff to ensure opening of the sealed property. Speaking to The Nation, PTI information secretary Shayan Bashir lamented at resealing of the party office, alleging the Lahore Development Authority of commiting unlawful act by resealing the party’s property contradictory to the court’s directives.

He urged the commission to appoint an independent third-party monitor to conduct the PTI’s fresh intra-party polls.
Babar termed the PTI’s intra-party elections mere “pretence and deception”.
He added that the “fraudulent” election process had deprived the PTI members of their right to vote and participate in the polls.
Babar further contended that the PTI had not disclosed the rules and regulations of the intra-party polls; their schedule and procedure; and time for the submission of nomination papers.

In a major development, an accountability court in Islamabad on Friday summoned co-accused in a £190 million settlement case — former accountability czar Shahzad Akbar, Zulfiqar Bukhari, Farhat Shahzadi aka Farah Gogi and others — by advertisements.
Incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supremo and deposed prime minister Imran Khan, who was ousted from power via a no-confidence motion in April last year, is facing charges of corruption of billions of rupees in a case also involving a property tycoon.
Khan — along with his wife Bushra Bibi and other PTI leaders — are facing a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) inquiry related to a settlement between the then-PTI government and the property tycoon, which reportedly caused a loss of £190 million to the national exchequer.
Irked by the suspects’ prolonged absence from the court’s proceedings, the judge ordered to summon the accused via advertisements. Later, the advertisements against the co-accused in the case have been pasted outside the judicial complex.
The court has ordered the co-accused in the case to appear before the court on January 6, 2024.
It is pertinent to mention here that currently, Akbar is in the United Kingdom. Last month, Akbar came under an acid attack, confirmed the UK police.
In a statement, Hertfordshire police said that they were contacted by the ambulance service just before 4:45pm on November 26 of reports of an assault in Royston — around 50 miles out of London where Akbar now lives with his wife and two daughters.
Gogi — a close friend of former first lady Bushra Bibi — reportedly left for Dubai on April 5 last year, say sources. Zulfiqar Bukhari had left the country after a case was registered against him in March this year.
Last week, NAB filed a corruption reference against ousted PM Khan, his wife and other suspects in the £190 million settlement case.
The reference was filed by NAB’s Deputy Prosecutor General Muzafar Abbasi, along with investigative officer Umar Nadeem, in an accountability court in Islamabad. The registrar's office is examining the reference.
Apart from Imran Khan and his wife, other suspects named in the reference are PTI leaders Bukhari, Akbar, lawyer Barrister Zia-ul-Mustafa Nazeer and three others.
In total 8 people have been named in the reference.
The filing of the reference comes days after the federal cabinet gave the go-ahead to conduct the jail trial of the PTI chairman in corruption cases.
According to The News, the cabinet summary, moved by the Ministry of Law and Justice, was approved via circulation.
The anti-graft watchdog had requested the ministry to allow the trial to be held in Adiala jail considering the law and order situation.
The ministry had already issued a notification on the trial of the PTI chairman in the £190 million National Crime Agency (NCA), UK, and Toshakhana case in prison.
According to the notification issued by the ministry on November 28, the accountability court concerned would sit and conduct the trial of the accused in the Central Prison, Adiala.
“The federal government is pleased to accord approval that the accountability court concerned shall sit and conduct the trial of the accused (PTI chairman and former PM) and others in Central Prison, Adiala, with reference to the case regarding misuse of authority/ illegal sale of gifted state assets, etc. under Section 16(b) of NAB Ordinance, 1999,” the notification said.

PTI denied permission to hold workers’ convention in Bajaur
BAJAUR: The local administration has refused to grant permission to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s local leadership to hold a workers’ convention planned for Saturday (today) here in Bajaur tribal district.
Sources in the district administration and PTI leaders told Dawn on Friday that deputy commissioner Mohammad Anwarul Haq had refused to permit the PTI district leadership to hold the convention at the residence of former provincial minister Anwarzeb Khan in Raghagan area of Khar.
They said in the order, the deputy commissioner cited multiple reasons for the refusal, including the imposition of Section 144 banning the gathering of more than five people in the district, and the delay in seeking permission by the party leaders for the event.
The sources said in the order issued to former PTI lawmakers Gul Dad Khan, Gul Zafar Khan, former provincial minister Anwarzeb, Dr Khalilur Rehman and former MPA Ajmal Khan, the DC noted they should have submitted an application for seeking permission for the convention at least nine days prior to the event.
However, the DC said the PTI leaders applied for the permission only three days before the planned gathering, which according to him was unlawful.
Moreover, the DC said PTI leadership didn’t mention the venue of the gathering in the application.
However, PTI leaders, including Anwarzeb, in their social media posts vowed to hold the workers’ convention at all costs.
They claimed a large number of party workers would participate in the event.
Meanwhile, in the latest development, the district administration on Friday evening sealed the hujra of Anwarzeb Khan, the venue of the workers’ convention, the sources said.
In a separate post on his social media account on Friday evening, former provincial minister Anwarzeb claimed a team of district administration officials sealed his guest house. He said such acts won’t prevent them from holding the gathering.
Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Anwarul Haq in a press release issued on Friday evening stated that the district administration didn’t seal the former provincial minister’s guest house.
However, he said the administration only sealed the place where the said gathering was scheduled. He said the district administration won’t allow holding of workers’ convention as the situation was not suitable for such gatherings in the district.
Also on Friday, the district administration imposed ban on pillion-ridding across the district for one month, according to a statement.

Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday barred the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from giving verdict on intra-party elections of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), ARY News reported.
As per details, a two-member bench comprised of the Peshawar High Court Justice SM Ateeq Shah and Justice Shakeel Shah heard the PTI’s plea against the ECP notice on the party’s intra-party elections.
The court asked the ECP in its verdict to not issue a final order on the intra-party elections of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and adjourned the hearing till December 19.
Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued notice to PTI in response to the party’s founding member Akbar S. Babar’s appeal challenging intra-party elections of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
It is to be mentioned here that the PTI’s founding member Akbar S Babar had termed the intra-party elections as drama. In a video statement, he said that the PTI has put the party and the election symbol of ‘bat’ on stake.
He suggested the constitution of an intra-party election commission, setting aside the election.
In a press conference earlier, Akbar S Babar had declared the party election as fraud saying that he had reservations about the intra-party election.

The PTI leader was arrested under 3-MPO. As per reports, he was being taken to the Mozang police station.
All attempts to resist the arrest by the PTI leader’s supporters went in vain as the police officials succeeded in taking him into custody.
'Unite over Imran's cause'
During the lawyer’s convention at the LHC, Marwat stressed on lawyers to “unite over the cause for which party’s founding chairman Imran Khan was fighting without fear of losing his life”.
Referring to the riots of May 9, Marwat maintained that the incident was the start of rigging for the upcoming general elections.
The PTI leader said people will be “surprised” soon, claiming some big names were ready to join the PTI.
Last week, the PTI leader alleged an attempted “abduction” by K-P police while en route to Gulabad near Chakdara for a party convention scheduled in Bajaur.
Marwat claimed that the police made a concerted effort to 'abduct' him as he was entering Gulabad, with approximately 300 heavily equipped officers allegedly involved in the incident.
However, following an uproar from the workers present, the police subsequently released him and instructed them to leave the area.
This development followed the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Marwat and PTI workers for organising a worker's convention in Swabi on December 3.
Authorities charged 21 local PTI leaders and others for violating Section 144. Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code 1898 empowers the district administration to impose a complete ban on any form of unlawful or unauthorised gathering, rally, assembly, protest, or gathering of more than five people.
Marwat had secured protective bail from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in two cases previously.

Marwat had secured protective bail from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in two cases previously.

PTI joint secretary Noman Shah on Thursday decided to part ways with the party following the events that transpired on May 9.
Expressing his thoughts, Shah said: "It now becomes difficult to stand by the deposed premier after May 9 mayhem. The workers had to bear brunt of the ill-mannered decisions taken by the party top brass."
He lambasted former Punjab chief minister Usman Buzdar and Farah Gogi, saying the practice of "corruption was promoted" under the supervision of the latters.
"The deposed premier had left no stone unturned to perplex the masses. This is the time where the PTI is now itself placed on ventiliation," he said.
Shah bemoaned the PTI intra-party elections, saying, "The party cannot be uplifted by holding the fake intra-party elections."

Party leader being taken to Mozang police station after heavy contingent of police takes him into custody
The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday issued notices to the deputy commissioner of Lahire and sought a reply by December 18 on a plea challenging the detention order which led to PTI Senior Vice President Sher Afzal Marwat's arrest under 3MPO.
The court, presided by Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry, was requested to side aside the detention order of Marwat and declare it illegal and unlawful. The court was further prayed that the respondents in the case be directed to release the PTI leader till the disposal of the petition.
Petitioner Khalid Lateef Khan, brother of Marwat, filed the plea through counsel and senior lawyer Latif Khosa, contending that no FIR, arrest warrant or detention order was shown despite repeated requests to the police officials by the lawyers who were accompanying Marwat.
The counsel also pointed out that there was no such intelligence report available before December 14. He contended that an intelligence report issued on the same day that Marwat was in Lahore showed malafide intent by the deputy commissioner and senior police officials.
Khosa implored the court in the petition that the detention order was issued "merely relying upon the assumption" and added that there is no evidence on record or history of disturbance by Marwat.
The petition further added that there was no danger to public peace or safety and neither was there and threat of a law and order situation being created with the presence of the PTI leader in the provincial capital.
Marwat's arrest
Heavy police contingents on December 14 arrested Marwat under 3MPO for a period of 30 days following intelligence reports that he had the potential to gather amob and attack government buildings, and sensitive installations and disturb peace endangering the life of innocent people.
He was arrested in front of the LHC's main gate as he came out of the premises after attending a lawyer’s convention.
Police officials asked him to step out of his vehicle after some arguments and after he did, he was taken towards a police vehicle. He was first taken to Mozang police station and then shifted to Kotlakhpat jail.

The hearing of PTI intra-party election cases will be held on Dec 18 (tomorrow). The former ruling party’s counsel will continue arguments on the intra-party polls as well as on the ECP’s separate notice.
The hearing of ECP contempt case against former PTI chairman Imran Khan and ex-PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry will be held on Dec 19. A four-member ECP bench will hear the case at Adiala Jail.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) disgruntled leader Sardar Latif Khosa on Sunday officially announced to join the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stating that he took the step “on the wish” of incarcerated PTI founder Imran Khan.
In a press conference held in Lahore, Khosa emphasized that his move was driven by the “interest of the country and democracy,” expressing his commitment to raising his voice for the truth.
“I have decided this only in the interest of the country and democracy,” he said.
Khosa underscored the importance of adhering to the constitution, describing it as a “civil agreement” with the characteristics of welfare states.
He added: “The motherland can become prosperous if we follow the Constitution. The Constitution has a solution for everything if implemented in its true spirit.”
Addressing the role of the armed forces, Khosa contended that their duty extends beyond protecting borders to assisting the state in emergencies such as floods and providing security during elections.
Notably, Latif Khosa, also a member of Imran Khan’s legal team, had received an invitation to join the PTI on December 4.
The decision comes after the PPP suspended Khosa’s party membership on September 22 for defending the PTI head without approval and criticizing the state policy during a lawyers’ function.
The PPP had issued a notice on September 14, warning of membership termination if Khosa failed to respond within the stipulated timeframe.
Election schedule
On Friday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued the election schedule for the upcoming February 8 general polls in compliance with the Supreme Court (SC) order issued earlier.
According to a notification issued by the electoral watchdog, the public notice would be issued by the Returning Officer (RO) on December 19 with the dates for filing nominations from Dec 20-22.
The ECP, in its notification, stated that the names of the nominated candidates would be published on Dec 23 while the last date for scrutiny of their nomination papers would be from Dec 24-30.
Moreover, the last date for filing appeals against the decisions of Returning Officer (RO) on rejecting or accepting nomination papers is January 3. The last date for deciding the appeals by an appellate tribunal on Jan 10.
The notification stated that the revised list of candidates will be published on Jan 11 and the last date for withdrawal pf candidature is Jan 12.
Meanwhile, the electoral watchdog said that election symbols will be allotted to political parties on Jan 13 with polls set for Feb 8.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday issued notices to the deputy commissioner of Lahire and sought a reply by December 18 on a plea challenging the detention order which led to PTI Senior Vice President Sher Afzal Marwat's arrest under 3MPO.
The court, presided by Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry, was requested to side aside the detention order of Marwat and declare it illegal and unlawful. The court was further prayed that the respondents in the case be directed to release the PTI leader till the disposal of the petition.
Petitioner Khalid Lateef Khan, brother of Marwat, filed the plea through counsel and senior lawyer Latif Khosa, contending that no FIR, arrest warrant or detention order was shown despite repeated requests to the police officials by the lawyers who were accompanying Marwat.
The counsel also pointed out that there was no such intelligence report available before December 14. He contended that an intelligence report issued on the same day that Marwat was in Lahore showed malafide intent by the deputy commissioner and senior police officials.
Khosa implored the court in the petition that the detention order was issued "merely relying upon the assumption" and added that there is no evidence on record or history of disturbance by Marwat.
The petition further added that there was no danger to public peace or safety and neither was there and threat of a law and order situation being created with the presence of the PTI leader in the provincial capital.
Marwat's arrest
Heavy police contingents on December 14 arrested Marwat under 3MPO for a period of 30 days following intelligence reports that he had the potential to gather amob and attack government buildings, and sensitive installations and disturb peace endangering the life of innocent people.
He was arrested in front of the LHC's main gate as he came out of the premises after attending a lawyer’s convention.
Police officials asked him to step out of his vehicle after some arguments and after he did, he was taken towards a police vehicle. He was first taken to Mozang police station and then shifted to Kotlakhpat jail.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday ordered the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice President Sher Afzal Marwat after he was detained under 3MPO.
Marwat was arrested by police outside the LHC on December 14 as he was leaving the court premises after attending a lawyers’ convention.
Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry presided over the hearing of the petition praying for Marwat's release. Announcing his verdict, the court ordered the PTI leader to submit a surety bond to secure his release. .
The former ruling party shared footage of Marwat’s arrest on X (formerly Twitter) earlier on Dec 14, showing police officials dragging Marwat by the collar as several lawyers tried to stop them.
“Abduction of lawyers from the premises of LHC is shameful and represents once again the respect for courts in the eyes of those in power. A caretaker government is crossing all limits of fascism,” PTI posted on its official X account.
The party urged LHC judges to ensure Marwat’s safe recovery.
“The aim of these unconstitutional and illegal tactics is to escape from polls and impose on people those who were brought under the ‘London plan’,” the PTI stated, adding that the “continued silence of the judiciary” was encouraging such illegal actions.

ECP defers Imran, Fawad’s indictment in contempt case
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday once again deferred the indictment of ex-premier Imran Khan and former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry in a case pertaining to contempt of the electoral body and the chief election commissioner (CEC).
A four-member bench of the ECP arrived at the Adiala Jail early morning, where both Imran and Fawad are incarcerated, to charge sheet the politicians.
The ECP had on Dec 6 decided conduct Imran and Fawad’s jail trial in light of the interior ministry’s denial to produce the former premier before the commission, citing security concerns.
Last year, the electoral body had initiated contempt proceedings against the PTI chief, former party leader Asad Umar and Fawad for allegedly using “intemperate” language against the chief election commissioner and the electoral watchdog.
However, instead of appearing before the ECP, the three had challenged the ECP notices and contempt proceedings in various high courts arguing that Section 10 of the Elections Act 2017, which is the statutory provision regarding the commission’s power to punish for contempt, was against the Constitution. The PTI leaders had also sought from the high courts a declaratory relief from the charges.
But in January, the Supreme Court allowed the ECP to continue proceedings against Imran, Fawad and Umar, and on June 21, the ECP decided to frame charges against the trio, which has yet to be done.
Fawad was arrested from Islamabad on Nov 4 in a corruption case and has been in custody ever since.
At the previous hearing, the electoral watchdog had announced that it would conduct indictment proceedings against the former premier and the ex-information minister in jail and asked the Ministry of Interior to make necessary arrangements in this regard.
In the latest development today, the ECP bench deferred the indictment and adjourned the hearing till December 27.
Speaking to media outside Adiala Jail, Imran’s lawyer Shoaib Shaheen said Imran’s petition challenging the jail trial was pending before the Lahore High Court. He contended that orders for the trial were passed without any lawful authority.
“This is an open trial case, only the place of hearing has changed,” he said, adding that the case could be heard transparently only when the media was present.
Shaheen further demanded that the media, public, family members and lawyers should be allowed to attend the indictment proceedings. He also complained that Imran’s legal team was not allowed to enter the jail today with the complete case record.
“Our files were checked for half an hour as we waited. Even the ECP members left after waiting,” the lawyer claimed, adding that the indictment was deferred because neither the PTI counsels nor the advocate general could reach in time for the hearing.
“Where is the level playing field when we can’t discuss the case with Imran?” he asked. “All other political parties except the PTI have been allotted their election symbols. The ECP is responsible for stopping pre-poll rigging,” Shaheen added.

PTI dismisses possibility of giving tickets to 'those who left'
Amid reports of former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Usman Dar's plans to rejoin politics, Imran Khan's party has dismissed the possibility of accepting any politician back into the party who earlier parted ways.
Senior PTI leader Senator Barrister Ali Zafar on Tuesday said that anyone "who left" will not be considered while ticketing for the upcoming elections, slated for February 8, 2024.
"PTI has a clear message that those who left [the party] in the past. [They] will not get the tickets and only those who remained steadfast in difficult times will be preferred," he said while speaking on Geo News' programme "Capital Talk".
The statement came in response to a question about a possible return of former PTI leader Usman Dar in reference to the attack on his residence in Sialkot.
Barrister Zafar said that the incident should be probed to find out the facts about it.
When asked if Dar's mother — who claimed she was "manhandled" during the attack on her house — wants to contest in the polls, the PTI senator said that as far as he knows after his recent conversations with the PTI supremo Imran Khan and other senior leaders, the party has the policy of not accepting anyone who parted ways.
Barrister Zafar said that he doesn’t know if the policy will change later or not.

Seven PTI leaders set to be declared proclaimed offenders
LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Tuesday initiated the process of declaring seven PTI leaders proclaimed offenders in a case related to the torching of police vehicles near Lahore’s Rahat Bakery Chowk during the May 9 riots.
The investigating officer of Sarwar Road Police Station informed the court through an application that the suspects could not be apprehended despite hectic efforts as they had gone into hiding to avoid arrest.
He said non-bailable arrest warrants had already been issued for the suspects, but they failed to surrender to the law.
He asked the court to start proceedings to declare the suspects proclaimed offenders.
Judge Abher Gul Khan allowed the application and approved proceedings under sections 87 and 88 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) against the absconding PTI leaders, including Hammad Azhar, Mian Aslam Iqbal, Samar Mashooq, Malik Haider Ali, Fayaz Anwar, Muhammad Adnan and Muhammad Qasim.
Separately, an anti-terrorism court on Tuesday dismissed an application of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi for non-prosecution. Through the application, Mr Qureshi sought to restore his pre-arrest bail petitions in six cases of May 9 violent protests.

Barrister Gohar said that the party tickets will be decided soon. “I will advise the party candidates to face hardships and submit their nomination papers,” he added.
Ali Zafar expressed hope that the election commission will decide about the party’s election symbol soon. ” The democracy will suffer in case of opacity in elections,” he said.
He expressed hope that the Islamabad High Court will announce its decision in Toshakhana case soon.

Asad Qaiser was arrested on December 8 under three maintenance of public order (MPO) orders issued by the district administrations of Mardan, Charsadda and Swabi.
The former NA speaker had already secured bail in the cases registered against him in Mardan and Charsadda on May 9. He was also granted bail in the case filed in Swabi by the district and sessions court.
Asad Qaiser is also facing corruption charges in the procurement of equipment for Gajju Khan Medical College in Swabi.
He was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) on November 3 at his residence in Bani Gala, Islamabad. He was later released on bail by an anti-corruption court on November 24 before he was re-arrested on December 2 in connection with a new case registered in Mardan district.
The ACE alleged that Asad Qaiser, who was the speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly at the time, had caused losses to the national exchequer by awarding contracts to his relatives and friends.
The ACE also claimed that he had misused his authority and violated the rules and regulations in the purchase of medical equipment for the college.

Usman Dar trying to restore links with PTI: Khawaja Asif
Responding to allegations levelled against him by former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Usman Dar’s mother, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stalwart Khawaja Asif has said it seems Dar wishes to restore his tumbling reputation after quitting politics.
Speaking on Geo News’ programme “Capital Talk” on Wednesday, Asif said that the ex-PTI leader is welcome to file an application against him and can even have the incident investigated by the officers of his choice.
Asif, the former federal minister, was referring to the allegations levelled by Dar’s mother who claimed that her house was attacked and she, along with her family members, were manhandled by the police on Asif’s behest — an accusation vehemently denied by the ex-defence minister.
In a video statement, Dar’s mother said that her house was broken into by people who manhandled her, pulling her hair and tearing her shirt.
"When they heard that I was submitting my nomination papers, they [Khawaja Asif] sent 20 people to my house,” she had claimed.
Responding to the allegations today, Asif said that if nomination papers were snatched from any PTI candidate [then] they could simply get new ones. "The PTI is misrepresenting [facts]. They are running away from the elections."
Commenting on the party supremo Nawaz Sharif’s plans for upcoming elections slated for February 8, 2024, the senior PML-N leader said that there is no hurdle preventing Nawaz from contesting the February 8 polls.
“Parliament has barred disqualification exceeding five years,” he said while referring to the lifetime disqualification handed to the former prime minister in the Panama Papers case.
He also revealed that the party's supreme leader will contest elections from Lahore and various other constituencies.

Three leaders of PTI from Gujrat had already parted ways with the party in recent days.

PTI says ECP has assured it will address party’s reservations on level playing field for polls
PTI lawyer Shoaib Shaheen said on Friday that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had assured the party that it would address the party’s concerns regarding a lack of a level playing field in the run up to the February 8 general election.
He made the remarks after a PTI delegation met with the ECP in Islamabad following the directives issued by the Supreme Court (SC) earlier in the day.
The SC had instructed the ECP to address PTI’s reservations about the lack of level playing. It had also directed the PTI to submit its complaint with the electoral watchdog and ordered Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan to play his role in the matter.
Speaking to the media after meeting with the ECP, Shaheen said: “They (ECP officials) have promised that the grievances will be addressed.” They have said they will decide at every cost before midnight today and we hope that our problem will be solved,” he said.
Separately, the ECP also issued instructions to the Islamabad chief commissioner, Islamabad and Sindh police chiefs and all four chief secretaries and provincial election commissioners regarding candidates’ nomination papers.

PTI set to challenge ECP verdict to regain electoral symbol
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is set to move court on Tuesday [Dec 26] against the decision given by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on the petitions challenging the PTI intra-party elections, party leader Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has said.
Interacting with media outside Adiala Jail on Saturday, Barrister Gohar called the revocation of PTI’s electoral symbol of ‘bat’ a part of conspiracy.
While rejecting the ECP verdict, Gohar asserted that the PTI would regain its electoral symbol.
The PTI, he said, could challenge the ECP verdict either in the Supreme Court under Article 184 of the constitution or in the high court. “Both options are available.”
Gohar requested courts to take up PTI’s appeal on a priority as soon as it was filed. He expressed confidence and hope that the court would grant relief by ordering the restoration of PTI’s electoral symbol.
But the ECP had yet to provide the PTI with certified copies of the verdict, he added.
According to Gohar, the incarcerated PTI founder has instructed the team to challenge the ECP decision in court.
He said they had completed their consultations and were ready to move court on Tuesday, Dec 26, but added that it was yet to be decided whether to challenge the ECP verdict in the Supreme Court or a high court.
It is important to note here that after the ECP invalidated PTI's intra-party polls on Friday, all positions within the party ceased to exist.
But Gohar, who also ceased to be the party’s new chairman, categorically stated that the PTI would be run the way it was being run before.
Gohar also voiced concerns about the fairness and transparency of the upcoming general elections slated for Feb 8 next year, saying that anarchy would prevail in the country if the ballot was skewed.
The PTI, he said, was a strong advocate of free and fair elections, adding that the snatching of the electoral symbol of a political group would be detrimental to democracy.
Even though the ECP recently issued instructions to the caretakers, four provincial election commissioners, chief secretaries and IGPs, Gohar complained PTI’s election candidates were facing obstacles in filing their nomination papers.

In the latest development, Muhammad Yahya Rasheed, counsel for PTI NA-127 candidate Ejaz Chaudhry, has formally lodged a written complaint with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Rasheed outlined the events that took place when he, accompanied by two employees, visited the Returning Officer (RO) Office for NA-127 to submit nomination papers on behalf of his client.
Recounting the incident, Rasheed stated, "I was present in the office of RO Hassan Gillani, Director Civil Defence, when a sizable contingent of police officials raided the RO office, forcibly confiscating nomination papers from us”.
“Furthermore, the police apprehended my two employees without just cause."
Expressing his dismay, Rasheed disclosed that when he brought the matter to the attention of RO Gillani, the latter claimed to have no control over the situation, suggesting recourse to a court of law.
This revelation prompted serious concerns about the viability of conducting free and fair elections under such circumstances.
Advocate Yahya underscored that both of his employees remain in police custody, urging the ECP to scrutinise such incidents and facilitate the recovery of Ejaz Chaudhry's nomination papers from the police, ensuring due process.
Simultaneously, PTI posted on the microblogging platform, X (formerly Twitter), that Advocate High Court Waqar Mushtaq was apprehended by the police from the office of the returning officer while submitting nomination papers for Ammar Bashir from PP-162, with the nomination papers subsequently seized.
"The police took Waqar to Shadman Police Station where his fellow lawyers met him, but now the police are denying his presence," stated PTI's official social media handle.
PTI further revealed that the nomination papers for PTI Lahore are encountering substantial hindrances, with rating officers, police, and unidentified individuals posing numerous challenges for PTI.
Earlier, PTI Central Punjab Vice President Akmal Bari was abducted while submitting papers. On Saturday, PTI Central Punjab President Hammad Azhar's nominations were rejected, citing orders from higher authorities.
Similarly, the lawyer representing the Insaf Youth Wing Lahore president was also abducted during an attempt to submit nomination papers.
The District Returning Officer has also refused to accept the nomination papers of Mian Mehmood-ul-Rashid.
PTI additionally complained that on Friday, the police forcibly took nomination papers from the 83-year-old husband of Dr Yasmeen Rashid and fled.
Police allegedly abused, pushed, and attempted to harass President Lahore High Court Bar Association Advocate Aamir Jalil during the submission of his papers.
Various party leaders and activists have also shared videos on social media depicting instances where police officials and individuals in civilian attire are seen attempting to snatch nomination papers from PTI candidates or creating impediments in the smooth submission of nomination papers.
