HRCP condemns killing of PTI-affiliated poll candidate in Bajaur
Zeb, affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and a member of HRCP, fell victim to the brutal attack, highlighting the dangers faced by political figures in the lead-up to the general elections.
The HRCP in a statement expressed deep concern over the situation stating: "HRCP is increasingly alarmed by the escalation in violence that has targeted the PTI in Sibi, the PPP in Quetta and the NDM in North Waziristan in January alone."
The human rights watchdog urged both the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the caretaker government to take immediate notice of the situation and ensure the perpetrators behind this attack are identified and brought to justice.
Khan was the candidate from NA-8 Bajaur. He was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Siddiqabad Phatak Bazar area earlier in the day.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has announced its decision to conduct intra-party elections on February 5, three days before the country opens its polling booths to over 128 million registered voters.The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to conduct intra-party election afresh within a week, sources said on Wednesday.
The PTI held a meeting of its general body where a resolution was approved to conduct intra-party election, they added.
The former ruling party would not be contesting the election 2024 on its iconic bat symbol as the Supreme Court set aside the Peshawar High Court (PHC) order that reinstated “bat” as the party’s electoral symbol.
The apex court on January 13 upheld the December 22 order of the Election Commission of Pakistan that nullified the intra-party elections of the PTI.
After the SC’s ruling, the party’s nominated candidates will now contest on individual election symbols.
In this regard, the PTI has now decided to hold the polls within one week of the resolution’s passage.
During the meeting, information secretary Rauf Hassan was appointed as the chief election commissioner of the party while Umar Ayub will serve as the chief organiser till the election.
The participants of the meeting also discussed conducting the election digitally in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore among other cities.
As per the resolution, the PTI’s nominated candidates will not be considered independent and they will remain part of the party after the election 2024.

The decision comes after two weeks when the Supreme Court upheld the December 23 order of the Election Commission of Pakistan that nullified the intra-party elections of the PTI.
In reaction to the SC judgement, the party decided that its candidates would contest elections as independents. The party founded by Khan has been campaigning for their leaders on social media.
But it has also expressed concerns over the safety of its leaders in the wake of a blast near a party rally in Balochistan’s Sibi and the killing of Rehan Zeb Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur.
A resolution related to the above-mentioned decision was adopted in the general body meeting of the party on Wednesday.
The party would conduct the scrutiny of papers on February 2 and it would release the final list of candidates on February 3.
Moreover, the polling would be conducted on Monday from 10am to 4pm and the results would be announced on February 6.

Pakistan: Security forces raid Imran Khan's party's central secretariat in Islamabad
Amid Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan's sentence of 10 years in jail in a cypher case, police and security officials in civil dress allegedly raided and took control of the PTI's central secretariat in Islamabad, Dawn News reported.
The Pakistan-based news daily reported that the officials raided the premises just before a PTI's general body meeting and stopped members from entering the premises, warning them that they would have to face consequences.
The PTI general body, however, managed to hold a virtual meeting in which it decided to hold intra-party elections within a fortnight. An official of the capital police denied the allegation, pointing out that a raid could not be conducted without having permission from a magistrate and no such order was issued on Wednesday.
Dawn News reported that Police official claimed that, on condition of anonymity, they went there for security. "[As] a judgement against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi was announced, there was a possibility that a protest would be held there. Police did not enter the secretariat and remained outside."
At the online meeting, the PTI general body nominated Omar Ayub as chief organizer and empowered him to issue notifications for intra-party polls. It also nominated a new election commission, headed by Raoof Hasan as chief election commissioner, with one member from each province and Gilgit Baltistan.
Noorul Haq from Sindh, Qazi Mohammad Anwer from KP, Walid Iqbal from Punjab, Mohammad Daud Khan from Balochistan, and Nasir Shah from GB have been nominated as members of the election commission from their respective provinces.
A party representative, requesting anonymity, said the general body meeting was planned to be held in Islamabad, all provincial capitals and GB, for which an arrangement was made to connect all stations through internet.
"However, in Islamabad, police along with people in civil dress reached the central secretariat, removed guards and took control of the secretariat. Staff was told to go out and a few of them, who wished to stay there, were restricted to their offices. Police officials threatened the PTI members, who were reaching there to attend the general body meeting, and told them not to take part in any political activity if they don't want to face consequences," he said. "Later, members attended the meeting virtually."
A 'crackdown' similar to the one in Islamabad was launched against the party in Quetta but the members swiftly changed the venue of the meeting and managed to attend it physically, according to him.Dawn News reported that the meeting was convened by Sibghatullah Virk in Islamabad, Sher Ali Arbab in KP, Ijaz Minhas in Punjab, Khurram Sher Zaman in Sindh and Salar Kakar in Balochistan, he said. PTI changes its mind, postpones intra-party polls until after Feb 8 elections
A day after announcing the schedule for fresh intra-party polls, the PTI said on Friday that it had decided to postpone them until after the upcoming general elections over the “unfortunate security situation created by the administration” and concerns expressed by members.
After a long battle and marathon hearings last month, the PTI was stripped of its symbol when the Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to declare the party’s internal polls as “unconstitutional”.
As a result, the party’s members are now contesting the elections as independent candidates with different electoral symbols, which has raised fears of horse-trading and floor crossing. The PTI also no longer has the right to reserved seats for women and minorities.
In another bid to reclaim its symbol, the PTI had decided to hold intra-party polls on Feb 5 during its general body meeting on Wednesday.
The meeting, which was supposed to take place at PTI’s Central Secretariat in Islamabad’s Sector G-8, was shifted online after police and security officials in plainclothes allegedly raided and took control of the premises and stopped members from entering, party sources had told Dawn.
An official of the capital police had denied the allegation, pointing out that a raid could not be conducted without having permission from a magistrate and no such order was issued that day.
A day earlier, PTI information secretary Raoof Hasan told Dawn that all arrangements had been finalised for the intra-party elections.
“We have opened a portal on the website…and only registered members will be allowed to contest elections. Candidates can get nomination papers from offices across the country or can download them from the website,” he said.
Hasan added that they would submit the result to the ECP, but they were not hoping for any relief from the watchdog. He feared the ECP may not allot the PTI its symbol or say that the elected independent members would not be allowed to join the party since it did not have lawmakers in the lower house of parliament.
Meanwhile, former ECP secretary Kanwar Dilshad told Dawn that the election watchdog would be the final decision-making authority in this regard.
However, in a notification issued today, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, the PTI said its internal polls were being rescheduled and would now take place after the date for the general elections.
“At the time of holding the general body meeting of the PTI on Jan 31, the designated venue of the party where the meetings were set to take place and the entry of participants were unlawfully blocked by the administration, including sealing of the Islamabad office, thus forcing us to search for and confirm alternate places and seek legal remedies,” it said.
“While we are ready for holding intra-party elections on the basis of secret ballot through digital balloting, the arrangements for availability of alternate venues requires additional time,” the statement, issued by Hasan, said.
It added that the party also received requests by its members that they were unable to find time to participate in the internal elections due to preparations for the Feb 8 polls.
“Taking cognisance of the security situation created by the administration and the views expressed by some of our members, the holding of intra-party elections needs to be rescheduled.
“They will now take place after the national elections on a date within the mandate and timeframe approved by the general body meeting. The amended schedule will be duly announced by the office of the federal election commission shortly,” the PTI said.
It concluded that federal and provincial offices of the party would continue to receive nomination forms till 10pm tonight and urged members to complete all formalities before that.

Following a spat over ticket distribution, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Information Secretary Raoof Hasan on Friday asserted that PTI committed a ‘political mistake’ by forging an alliance with Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed, ARY News reported.
Talking to journalists in Islamabad, the PTI spokesperson noted that the former interior minister has sighted his defeat while disassociating the party from arrest of Sheikh Rasheed.
“Alliance with Sheikh Rasheed has harmed PTI,” Raoof Hasan said, adding that the party has its own candidates in former’s constituency.
Responding to a question, the PTI leader said Usman Dar – who recently condemned the May 9 riots – hasn’t left the party. “Dar’s mother had contacted the party following her son’s press conference,” he added.
He believed that the PTI-backed independent candidates would not change loyalties after the conclusion of general elections 2024. “PML-N and Asif Ali Zardari will not succeed in buying independent candidates”, he added.
Hasan further said that PTI founder Imran Khan will not make any deal even “if the punishment is more severe”.

PTI holds rally in Swabi despite police raid
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leaders during a power show here on Saturday said implicating the party founder and former prime minister in what they said baseless and politically-motivated cases had backfired as popularity of the incarcerated leader had increased manifold, which would be proven in the Feb 8 elections.
The power show was held in Naro Kali area, three kilometers from the district headquarters, along the Swabi-Mardan Road.
PTI district president Sohail Yousafzai claimed that the party managed to hold a successful show despite facing roadblocks from the police and the district administration.
The party activists from across the district participated in the convention.
The speakers said the powers that be were adamant on bringing to the helm PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif by entangling their leader (Imran) in ‘fabricated cases’.
The police attempted to take away chairs, loudspeakers and other material from the gathering’s venue, but the PTI leaders and workers thwarted their bid and held the convention.
At one point, the situation turned very serious when the police started picking the chairs.
Attaullah Khan, the Swabi tehsil mayor, moved forward, stopped the police from collecting chairs, and asked them to leave the place honourably.
Another leader claimed that they foiled the police’s bid to interrupt their plan. “We didn’t leave the venue and held a successful convention.”
Speaking on the occasion, former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser termed the sentences awarded to Imran Khan in the cipher, Toshakhana and Iddat cases as pre-determined verdicts, and none of these judgments was ‘based on justice’.
He said ‘manipulation’ of the entire legal process was known to the entire world and Imran was deprived of cross-examining the prosecution witnesses. “In the country’s history, no one faced such a harsh treatment.”
“Khan’s fundamental right of cross-examination was denied to him when the case trials were in critical stage, making the entire legal process controversial,” he said, adding that the present moment was highly crucial for PTI leaders and workers because they were being targeted and deprived of their legal rights, while the other parties were free to continue their campaigns.
He termed Imran Khan’s trial a sham trial, just meant to prevent PTI from winning the Feb 8 elections, but such a strategy won’t work as the people were now fully aware of what was going on behind the scenes in an age of pouring information from different sources, especially the social media.
Mr Qaiser said that the youth’s role was very important in the coming elections and PTI had attached great expectations to them.
He blasted Maryam Nawaz Sharif for what he said labelling the Pakhtuns as militants.
Attaullah Khan, the Swabi tehsil mayor, condemned the police for raiding the venue of the public gathering and attempting to remove chairs, loudspeakers and other material from the spot, and questioned why the other political parties were given a free hand to hold their gatherings wherever and whenever they wanted.
“Policemen take selfies with leaders of other parties, but target us. We will not allow it at any cost. We are also Pakistanis,” he said, adding they had asked the party leaders that they should reach the venue of the gathering using force of party workers.
Mr Attaullah said that the party leaders and workers were enthusiastic despite facing numerous hurdles and obstacles. “We are on an offensive and would continue our campaign.”

Speaking on the occasion, former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser termed the sentences awarded to Imran Khan in the cipher, Toshakhana and Iddat cases as pre-determined verdicts, and none of these judgments was ‘based on justice’.
He said ‘manipulation’ of the entire legal process was known to the entire world and Imran was deprived of cross-examining the prosecution witnesses. “In the country’s history, no one faced such a harsh treatment.”
“Khan’s fundamental right of cross-examination was denied to him when the case trials were in critical stage, making the entire legal process controversial,” he said, adding that the present moment was highly crucial for PTI leaders and workers because they were being targeted and deprived of their legal rights, while the other parties were free to continue their campaigns.
He termed Imran Khan’s trial a sham trial, just meant to prevent PTI from winning the Feb 8 elections, but such a strategy won’t work as the people were now fully aware of what was going on behind the scenes in an age of pouring information from different sources, especially the social media.
Mr Qaiser said that the youth’s role was very important in the coming elections and PTI had attached great expectations to them.
He blasted Maryam Nawaz Sharif for what he said labelling the Pakhtuns as militants.
Attaullah Khan, the Swabi tehsil mayor, condemned the police for raiding the venue of the public gathering and attempting to remove chairs, loudspeakers and other material from the spot, and questioned why the other political parties were given a free hand to hold their gatherings wherever and whenever they wanted.
“Policemen take selfies with leaders of other parties, but target us. We will not allow it at any cost. We are also Pakistanis,” he said, adding they had asked the party leaders that they should reach the venue of the gathering using force of party workers.
Mr Attaullah said that the party leaders and workers were enthusiastic despite facing numerous hurdles and obstacles. “We are on an offensive and would continue our campaign.”

Former prime minister Imran Khan's party has redefined election campaigning in Pakistan with its social media rallies and use of AI technology in a bid to sidestep a nationwide crackdown that has followed it online.
Khan was jailed in the build-up to the campaign, while his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been heavily restricted from campaigning for Thursday's vote and banned from the television airwaves.
Censorship then followed as the party pushed its election campaign online.
"They can ban what they want, they can ban YouTube and TikTok, whatever they want but our vote is for Imran Khan," 18-year-old Imran Aziz, a first-time voter, told AFP at a bustling electronics market in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.
Pakistani internet freedom watchdog Bytes 4 All recorded four hours-long social media shutdowns in January that cut off access to TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube while Khan's PTI live-streamed to its supporters.
The blackouts were blamed by the government on "technical difficulties".
The party's main website was also blocked in January and, within hours, a seemingly perfect duplicate appeared -- except that it contained disinformation meant to confuse voters.
The methods are not new, and were also used by Khan when he was in power, but activists say the scale of the crackdown is "unprecedented".
"It challenges the democracy of a nation when you have the incumbents preventing the opposition's ability to participate," said Alp Toker, the director of global network monitor NetBlocks.
Khan says the campaign against him is an attempt by the government and military to keep him from returning to power after analysts say he fell out with the generals -– Pakistan's kingmakers.
PTI websites have been blocked, including an official portal listing its candidates nationwide.
A duplicate site with a slightly different web address appeared online hours later containing misleading candidate information, directing voters to cast ballots for representatives from other parties.
PTI activists told AFP they have had the fake site taken down but their own candidate webpage is still blocked.
It had already been severely hampered by a ban preventing the party from using its traditional election symbol of a cricket bat. Literacy rates hover around 60 percent in Pakistan, so parties use symbols to identify their candidates.
Despite the restrictions, PTI remains far ahead of its rivals when it comes to connecting online with Pakistan's youthful population and tens of millions tune in to its live streams.
It has also become the first party to use AI voice-cloning technology, releasing a fresh speech by Khan from behind bars.
"They have apps, they have online speeches, they've done a TikTok jalsa (gathering) which is unprecedented, at least in Pakistan, so they have a way of innovating and it's always been the case," said Ramsha Jahangir, a technology journalist.
She said censorship efforts by the government have little impact on PTI's popularity because the party is nimble enough to keep reaching its voters.
Bytes 4 All director Shahzad Ahmed agreed that, in a country with more than 70 million social media users and a median age under 21, such "shutdowns are counterproductive".
"The youth is quick to adopt new technologies to circumvent such blockades," he said, pointing to the use of virtual private networks (VPN).
Independent candidates with scant resources who rely on social media to spread their message have also been hit hard.
Lawyer Jibran Nasir, who is running in the port city of Karachi, has taken the government to court over the social media shutdowns, saying it sets a "dangerous precedent" for the future and violates people's constitutional rights.
"It is a direct attack on the freedom of expression of all Pakistanis regardless of what part of the political spectrum they belong to," he told AFP.
"I primarily rely on social media because, given the inflation, it is virtually impossible to run a fully fledged campaign within the budget limits."
AFP spoke to two other independents who said their messaging was also affected.
Apart from the curbs on political freedom, the measures have seeped into the operations of online businesses in a country facing an economic crisis.
Rabia Farhan, who runs a baked-goods business on Instagram from her home in Islamabad, said the outages left her unable to connect with vendors at a time when millions of Pakistanis are struggling due to rampant inflation and currency devaluation.
"Everything was paused online until and unless we used physical resources," she told AFP.
Saba Mushtaq, of ride-hailing and delivery service Bykea, said the company experienced "significant operational disruptions" affecting 100,000 commuters and 25,000 drivers.
IT trade association Pasha told AFP it was trying to get the government to ensure internet shutdowns do not knock out the tech sector, by protecting certain websites.
The brazen attempts to shut down the party's online presence only hardens the resolve of PTI supporters.
"They are imposing these restrictions but they cannot take (Khan) out of our hearts," PTI supporter Malik Noman, 28, said.

Lakki Marwat witnessed disturbing clashes between PTI supporters and the police, resulting in harm to officers and damage to 12 vehicles. Why have PTI supporters become so violent?
What do you expect when their supporters have had their houses constantly raided, livelihoods destroyed, family, friends, journalists, representatives etc assassinated domestically and abroad, leader being the target of assassination, ridiculous cases, being called a virus and being made a target of religious extremists by opposition parties (particularly by Maryam Nawaz), police and Establishment treating them with utter contempt, constitution and rule of law completely dismantled just to suppress the massive numbers they have etc? Like seriously, what do you expect? You can’t viciously brutalise the majority of a population for multiple years and not expect anger to rise. If anything, PTI supporters at large have been impressively peaceful, and arguably, subservient.
In all honesty, it’s a pathetic question to ask in the first place.

Why were PTI and their supporters so kind to the establishment back in 2018? At that time, when they were getting perks, the establishment was considered the best... right?
Let’s not try to conflate the extent of establishment suppression that occurred in 2018 compared to post-2022- it is indiscriminately worse now than it was in 2018.
I, like many others, have had zero interest in Pakistani politics for the majority of my life (the establishment has proven to be the main driving factor as to why Pakistan, as well as the two nation theory, has failed), though the past couple years have woken a lot of us up to the realities of this damned state.

Maryam nawaz was not allowed to contend an election. A false drug case was placed on hanif abbasi, naawaz shareef dealing with a case where ge was removed on not being sadiq and amin.
The establishment funded tlp and made islamabad hostage. I live in rawalpindi and a drive to islamabad for university which is 45 mins turned into 4 hours due to the situation that establishment establishment created.
Pti and establishmenet empowered tlp to the extent that the ideology or murdering people on the basis of faith spread fast that it ended up killing a sri lankan worker.
Things were as bad back than, but were not covered on social media and was justified by pti.

Senior lawyer and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) backed election contestant, Advocate Sardar Latif Khan Khosa, has raised concerns about the credibility of the upcoming general elections, urging for the deployment of neutral election staff to ensure a fair and rigging-free election day.
At a press conference held at his residence in Lahore’s DHA on Monday, Khosa emphasised a zero-tolerance policy towards any attempts at rigging during the electoral process.
Khosa asserted that February 8 would bring surprises, especially for the PML-N, as he predicted the return of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to London. He humorously contrasted Sharif's previous stance of "mujhay kion nikala" (why was I ousted) with the current situation of "mujhay kion bulaya" (why was I called back).
Highlighting concerns over potential massive-scale rigging, Khosa pointed out discrepancies in the voter registration process. He claimed that around 60,000 voters from the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) fell within his constituency (NA-122), yet each voter had been registered in separate polling stations.
Expressing displeasure over delimitation issues, he noted that voters from one area had been wrongly registered in another, with many polling stations for DHA voters located in rural areas.
Khosa said over his complaint, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had instructed the Deputy Commissioner to investigate the matter, but no concrete action had been taken. He insisted on the need for neutral polling and presiding officers to prevent any manipulation of the public's mandate, pledging increased vigilance on election day.
Additionally, Khosa revealed that he had directed the district presidents of his party to take necessary actions, including expelling those he referred to as "wrong numbers" – individuals who did not withdraw themselves in favour of the candidates endorsed by the party.
During the press conference, senior lawyer advocate Azhar Siddique announced his withdrawal in favour of Khosa in the NA-122 contest. Siddique expressed gratitude to the Sunni Itehad Council, Pakistan Awami Tehreek, and other political parties that had withdrawn their candidates in support of Khosa.

If you were a PTI leader, or party of any leader for that matter, and I ask this question of everyone here except the Hindu Bharati posters:
What would you do or would have done if your goal is to be in a position of power where you can help improve things?
We know the establishment runs the country, and nothing happens without their say so. So do you just give up and not do anything? fight the establishment outside of the political process (this can be complicated and mess) or try to work from within the system (still messy and complicated but possibly more "civil")

The Punjab police on Monday continued raiding the PTI election offices, as well as houses of the party leaders and supporters, besides allegedly harassing women workers.

He said law enforcement personnel abducted a high court lawyer, Khalid Ranjha, and his 70-year-old ailing father by breaking the door of their house in Sargodha on Sunday night.
The raiding officials ransacked the furniture, broke the doors and vandalised the house, he said, adding that the lawyer’s only crime was campaigning for PTI-affiliated candidate Usama Mela in NA-83.
In Gujrat, PTI nominee for NA-64 Chaudhary Qaisara Elahi, wife of party president Parvez Elahi, and her sister Sameera Elahi, also a party candidate from PP-34, have accused the police of raiding the Zahoor Elahi House on Sunday night.
Speaking at a news conference on Monday, they said the police broke into a portion of the house and asked the servants to produce the documents of nominations of polling agents as well as the list of polling agents.
However, after failing to get such documents, the police took away a servant, as well as a computer, laptop, and voter lists from a room, they alleged.
They said the police had entered the house on a truck and damaged the doors and furniture of the house, whereas some staff members of Shafay Hussain, the scion of PML-Q chief Chaudhary Shujaat Hussain, were also present there to guide the police during the raid.
Sameera Elahi Chohan, the youngest daughter of Zahoor Elahi, said she and her sister Qaisara Elahi had visited the city’s main commercial hub Muslim Bazaar on Sunday where traders accorded them a rousing reception and in reaction police conducted the raid late in the night.
She blamed the police for pressurising the PTI supporters, particularly former elected representatives of local bodies, not to organise the election meetings of PML-Q candidates. “Let me tell our rivals that they could not get votes in Gujrat by adopting such tactics.”
She alleged that people were not being allowed to meet Qaisara Elahi even at her house. “Such tactics cannot stop the victory of PTI candidates in Gujrat.”
In Multan, veteran politician Javed Hashmi said police had raided his house in Makhdoom Rasheed area and picked up his son-in-law, grandson and a servant. His son-in-law Shahid Bahar Hashmi is a PTI-backed candidate.

Sameera Elahi Chohan, the youngest daughter of Zahoor Elahi, said she and her sister Qaisara Elahi had visited the city’s main commercial hub Muslim Bazaar on Sunday where traders accorded them a rousing reception and in reaction police conducted the raid late in the night.
She blamed the police for pressurising the PTI supporters, particularly former elected representatives of local bodies, not to organise the election meetings of PML-Q candidates. “Let me tell our rivals that they could not get votes in Gujrat by adopting such tactics.”
She alleged that people were not being allowed to meet Qaisara Elahi even at her house. “Such tactics cannot stop the victory of PTI candidates in Gujrat.”
In Multan, veteran politician Javed Hashmi said police had raided his house in Makhdoom Rasheed area and picked up his son-in-law, grandson and a servant. His son-in-law Shahid Bahar Hashmi is a PTI-backed candidate.

However, when questioned by the Chief Justice, SSP Operations of Islamabad Police claimed that only two out of 112 candidates had lodged complaints, a statement met with skepticism by Chief Justice Farooq, who remarked with a wry smile, "They are the only ones who have complaints?"
In response, SSP Operations maintained that all parties had been provided a level playing field, prompting Chief Justice Aamir Farooq to express incredulity, asking pointedly, "Really?"

Although PTI flags, banners or posters are mostly missing from the capital’s main arteries, the man produces a hidden PTI flag from the depths of his jacket, asserting not just his allegiance but a promise that he and his friends would cast their votes for Imran on February 8.
“Two of our friends have decided to quit jobs to vote for PTI because their boss refused to give them leave on polling day,” he shared, adding “he wouldn’t mind leaving the job if it comes to choosing between vote and job.”
Imran Khan’s popularity, both on the ground and in the social media realm, stood resilient against the backdrop of a diverse array of election symbols—ranging from vegetables to household items. PTI clings to one hope—that the people will defy alleged plans by powerful stakeholders to crown PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif once again.
“In the polling booth, I will be alone with the ballot paper,” another young man in Mandi Bahauddin, who has recently returned to Pakistan from abroad, said.
Referring to the alleged crackdown, snatching of nomination papers, and returning officers rejecting PTI candidates’ nomination papers en masse, he while requesting not to be named, said that the whole exercise was to disappoint voters and that it would be a futile exercise to cast one’s vote as things wouldn’t be allowed to go in PTI’s favour.
“The whole situation has been created to send this message that it would be useless to cast a vote,” he said before vowing to resist the alleged plan through his vote. Both the young men’s sentiments as well as the hope of bringing change through their vote are the only silver lining for PTI in the 2024 general elections as voters aged between 18 and 35 make up 45 per cent of a total electorate of nearly 130 million.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), it was reported, that the number of young voters has soared to 56.86 million from 46.43 million in 2018, positioning it to play a crucial role in the making of the new government. Some 23.51 million voters are aged 18-25 years, it read, while 33.34 million voters are aged 26-35.
Seeing the numbers, the experts have repeatedly been saying that the youth can turn the table in many constituencies if they turn out in large numbers on polling day.
Though emotions run high among PTI voters and supporters on the ground and on social media, the track record of young voters suggests that they do not come out to vote.In 2018, it was recently reported, that the national voting turnout was 52% whereas the turnout of voters aged between 18 and 30 years was 37%, marking a significant disparity between young and older voters in terms of ballot cast.
Also, the background discussions with leaders from rival political parties indicate their optimism about the youth demographic, as they assert that not all young voters align with the PTI. Among other things, they believe, PTI workers held violent protests and attacked military installations following Imran’s arrest in a corruption case in May last year, saying it has severely dented PTI’s credibility and changed peoples’ perception.
Given that Imran Khan remains convicted and is unlikely to be released before the polls, there is a hope that voters of all ages will scrutinize party manifestos and evaluate past performances.
The PTI’s rivals believe that traditional approaches, such as providing food and transportation, may not only mobilize voters to the polling stations but also influence their decision-making process.

In a near-repeat of the 2018 elections, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has ruled Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa twice, appeared headed for a clean-sweep, convincingly trouncing all rivals in both National Assembly and Provincial Assembly constituencies in the general elections held on Thursday, according to unofficial, unverified preliminary results.

Today's results are both clear and complicated.
Independent candidates - many of whom would have run under the banner of the PTI party but were prevented from doing so - have taken the largest number of seats.
However the PML-N, led by pre-election frontrunner Nawaz Sharif, can currently claim to be the largest party.
What is clear is that Imran Khan's PTI party has proved that its popularity is not a social media bubble, but has a real and committed support base.

PTI won 170 NA seats, claims Gohar
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar claimed that the party has won 170 National Assembly seats out of 265.
“Out of these, 94 are those that the ECP is admitting and has issued Form-47," said Gohar while addressing the media. He added that on 22 other seats where PTI had won, the victory was "converted to a defeat”.

Police tear gas PTI protesters outside Talagang RO office
Police on Saturday used tear-gas shells to disperse the protesting PTI-backed candidates and their supporters when they staged a protest outside the office of the returning officer (RO) in Talagang against the alleged rigging in the Feb 8 polls.
The local PTI leadership alleged that the police also beat some of the workers with sticks and later arrested them.
It all started when two PTI-backed candidates Nisar Ahmed and Mr Surkhru with their supporters went to the RO office to get certified copies of the results, but they could not obtain them as the official was not present in the office.
After getting annoyed over the absence of the RO, the PTI workers started chanting slogans. In the meanwhile, heavy contingents of police and Rangers were called in. When the protesters refused to leave the premises, the police personnel started baton-charge and fired tear gas shells on them. PTI’s Talagang president Nisar Ahmed alleged that scores of workers had been arrested by the police.
All PTI-backed candidates have announced that they would challenge the results to get justice.
Talking to Dawn at his residence, PTI-backed candidate and veteran columnist Ayaz Amir attributed the election results to massive rigging which according to him he never witnessed in his life.
“Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything,” said Mr Amir while highlighting discrepancies in the unofficial results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
“I went to the RO office at 6pm on polling day so that I could observe the vote counts. After two hours, police cops forcibly evicted me”, said Mr Amir as he showed a video footage in which police cops were seen forcing him to evict the premises.
Mr Amir claimed that as per forms 45 of all polling stations in his constituency, he had bagged 154,825 against 128,914 votes of his rival retired Major Tahir Iqbal of the PML-N. However, he said, the final result declared him a loser and the PML-N candidate a winner with a big margin.
“They have broken the records of mathematics. How on earth the PPP candidate was given 74,300 votes in Form 47 while in Form 45, he got only 13,796 votes”, Mr Amir said.
The results of NA 59-Talagang and its two sub-constituencies were also termed fake by PTI candidates.
NA-59 was won by PML-N’s Sardar Ghulam Abbas, who grabbed 141,680 votes as per Form 47 against his rival PTI’s Roman Ahmed’s 129,716 votes. But Roman Ahmed claims that according to the calculation of Forms 45 of all 467 polling stations, he had actually got 145,839 votes while his rival Sardar Ghulam Abbas got 113,164.
“In reality, I won this constituency by a heavy margin of 32,675 votes”, he told Dawn.
Mr Roman who is still in Saudi Arabia did not come to Pakistan for fear of arrest.

PTI leader and senior lawyer Latif Khosa said on Tuesday that the people “have responded” and stood firmly by party’s founding chairman Imran Khan.
He urged the state authorities to “listen to the people”.
Talking to the media outside the office of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the former premier’s lawyer said, “Today, we are standing in front of this house, whose responsibility it is to ensure transparent elections.”
However, he lamented that the PTI was ‘discriminated against’ in the lead up to the elections while other parties were “given a level-playing field”.
“But the public has responded. The voice of the people should be heard,” he stressed, adding that it was incumbent on every institution, “be it the judiciary, or the military”, to be loyal to the people.
Khosa said his party was seeking justice. “We have a decision from 250 million people. And they have decided that they will not be governed without Imran Khan,” he said, asserting that the people of Pakistan have rejected all cases against the incarcerated PTI supremo.
“I demand that the President of Pakistan orders his release under Article 45. Imran was not even given a chance to defend himself,” he said.

The PTI has said that respecting the public’s mandate is indispensable for the survival and strength of the state.“By blatantly attacking the public mandate and forcibly sharing power among criminals, the gap between the state and the public will widen and weaken the state,” the party said in a statement on social media platform X.
The PTI claimed that the people, especially the young generation, had shown their trust in party founder Imran Khan in a “clear manner” and called for the immediate release of the former premier.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) faced another setback as a newly-elected member of the Sindh Assembly from Karachi, Ijaz Swati, announced his decision to join the PPP.

Gandapur among nine to be held over May 9 riots
A strategy has been chalked out to arrest last year’s May 9 violence nine proclaimed offenders, including PTI’s Ali Amin Gandapur, who was elected as a parliamentarian in the general elections 2024.A day earlier, PTI founding chairman and former premier Imran Khan nominated Gandapur for the slot of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister.
Apart from Gandapur, PTI leaders Mian Aslam Iqbal and Sheikh Imtiaz, who emerged victorious in the recent polls, were also declared proclaimed offenders by in connection with last year’s May 9 riots and would be rounded up by police.
The Lahore police, along with officials from a joint investigation team (JIT), have stepped up their efforts to nab 22 PTI leaders and 282 activists who were declared proclaimed offenders by the courts for their alleged involvement in the May 9 mayhem.
According to JIT sources, advanced techniques including geo-fencing, mobile tracking and IP address tracing were being used to locate the proclaimed offenders.
They added that the proclaimed offenders, who had bagged seats in the recent general elections, would be rounded up in accordance with the law.
The JIT sources said the proclaimed offenders, who participated in the recent elections, were in frequent touch with campaign activists and their supporters throughout the polls as well as during the announcement of the results.
This ongoing communication has provided the police and JIT with valuable information about the whereabouts of the proclaimed offenders, facilitating the implementation of the arrest plan.
The assistance of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other agencies is being sought to locate the proclaimed offenders.
On September 30 last year, an anti-terrorism court declared Gandapur and eight other PTI leaders as proclaimed offenders in the case of an attack on Lahore Jinnah’s House, where the city’s corps commander was residing.
Lahore’s Sarwar Road police had registered an FIR against the PTI leaders and activists following the attack during the May 9 riots.
Gandapur served as the federal minister for Kashmir affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan from October 5, 2018, to April 10, 2022.
Before his tenure at the federal level, Gandapur was a member of the K-P Assembly from 2013 to 2018.
During his time in the provincial assembly, he held the position of K-P revenue minister.
Gandapur hails from a Pashtun family in Dera Ismail Khan, with his father, Major (retd) Aminullah Gandapur, also having played a role in politics.

JI turns down PTI’s offer to form coalition govt in KP
The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) on Wednesday turned down the PTI’s offer to form a coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), linking its decision to the PTI limiting its alliance to just provincial level.
The statement from JI’s Central Naib Emir Liaqat Baloch comes a day after the PTI announced to form a coalition in Centre and Punjab with the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) and align with the JI in the KP.
“He (Imran) has approved [of a coalition] with two parties. We will form a coalition with the MWM in the Centre and Punjab and a coalition with the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) in KP for the reserved seats. These are his decisions and we will implement them, we have already begun work on them,” PTI’s Central Information Secretary Raoof Hasan had said.
In a social media post today, JI’s Baloch said his party had held a meeting with the PTI after the Feb 8 elections for a consensus on the way forward.
He said the JI had communicated its displeasure at the poll results but welcomed the PTI-backed MNAs who won through the public’s mandate.
Baloch said the JI had also extended its unconditional cooperation with these MNAs in terms of party, constitutional and parliamentary protection.
“The PTI welcomed it but in the last stage conveyed the message that they only wanted a coalition for the government in KP,” the JI leader said.
“JI has decided that coalition with PTI at the national level would be in the national interest, but if the PTI has changed its position, then they can settle their affairs with whoever they want in KP,” Baloch added.
Earlier in the day, JI spokesperson Qaiser Sharif claimed that the PTI had “changed its stance” on their plan regarding cooperation in the upcoming government.
Sharif said that both parties had agreed to “cooperate at national level in the national interest”.
