watch the family man on amazon.. manoj bajpai is a brilliant actor

stream it if you dont have prime video.. lol

A very very good show which showed both sides of the arguments re Indian Muslims with plenty of action and humor to boot. The parts about Pakistan were LOL worthy as usual though. All in all a very binge worthy series.

Started watching Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. It is a slightly old movie but I didn't watch it.

Yup going on sat , might cancel if something comes up.
Some people whom I didn’t expect liked it and many who I expected didn’t, so i’m curious.

Saw dream girl last week 8/10 for dialogues which were hilarious, esp second half.

They had two actors from TVF channel ,made me happy that they had so many scenes.

Watched Joker in theatre today.

It was a good movie. Phoenix acted well. He deserves an award.

However, the character was lacking. This Joker was not as entertaining as some of the previous Jokers (Ledger's Joker, Nicholson's Joker etc.).

70s was an experimental time in movies, Taxi Driver is one of the best directed movies imo, the evolution of the character and the ending is what made it huge for me, when I saw the movie i just couldn’t believe it, was so involved in it.

shaz619 saadibaba Dead Ball did you guys like it?

Funny you mentioned. I recently watched Taxi Driver again after at least 10 years. It was on Netflix and I was in the mood for some 70's cinema. I agree, 70's was the golden era of American movies. Actually late 60's to late 70's in my opinion. This was the time when studios gave the reign to auteur directors like Coppola, Scorsese, De Palma etc. and in the late 70's Spielberg and Lucas. Those movies had a distinct personal style and atmosphere to them. Amazing thing was even though those movies were serious, down beat and artistic, there was a huge audience for them. People in the 70's looked up to movies for answers to complicated social and political questions of those times and thought of directors as artists. Movie watching was in vogue and in turn movies were much better.

Coming back to Taxi Driver. Paul Schrader's script, which he wrote as a cathartic self introspective at a time when he was extremely depressed and going through a very dark phase of his life, combined with Scorsese's unique NY city vision, painting a landscape with his lens like never before, the neon signs melting on the wet windshield of the Taxi as it drove across NYC. Travis Bickle, the lonely and disillusioned young man aimlessly driving around in a metal coffin, looking for a purpose to his sad and pathetic life. Bernard Herman score is undeniably his best work. The camera work is masterful and mesmerizing. The ending violent and satisfying. It definitely stood up to its hype and prestige. Its the ultimate loner movie.

Thanks for the detailed post.

Feels like Joker was a tribute to Taxi Driver, I personally found so many similarities but not the satisfying end which I found in Taxi Driver.

How old are you?

This joker made all the other jokers ever depicted seem like kids. This was the ultimate villain.

Villain? LOL. He was Joker for like 30-40 minutes. Also, he cried like a weak person. He also got caught easily in the end; real Joker doesn't get caught like that.

I am 29.

Metacritic gave the movie 69% approval while Rotten Tomatoes gave it 66%. It was kind of average overall.

Best Joker of all time is Ledger's Joker. He is the Bradman of all Jokers.

You’ve got to be mentally tough to understand that this Joker was everything we needed to understand why he is the number 1 nemesis to Batman. I’m not sure if this storyline is DC comics canon. Whatever it is, it gives so much sense to the hatred this antagonist has to the key protagonist.

All of his emotions in the movie were making total sense with the story line and how they were building him up for a trilogy. He gets caught easily because he is not a professional criminal in his genesis.

It was good but how come he got caught so easily? They could've made the movie 3 hours long and have more actions. Ending was kind of lame.

I answered that. He surrendered the first time and was happy to be caught. He wasn’t a professional criminal yet. The movie gives you the hint that the joker will eventually be freed, helped by inspired criminals and those who will work with him. He has more power than the powerful in Gotham.

Makes sense.

I think they should make a second Joker movie with Joaquin Phoenix. This time make him professional and ruthless criminal. That's what I would love to see.

I watched dreamgirl and its pretty funny. Some of the one liners were real funny. Post interval movie gets funnier when his dad also gets involved into love saga.
I also watched War today and its OK movie. It had its moment but overall it seemed movie was all about ‘Hrithik vs Tiger’. Halfway through the movie and I already knew the Tiger was the main villain. Im glad it wasn’t borefest like Saaho.

All portrayals have been excellent, slightly different incarnations however with Hamil's being the most authentic. So it's childish to berate the other portrayals, how old are you? Stop watching WWE :))

Hahaha oops should’ve added SPOILER ALERT on my previous post.
I think now a days Bollywood movies are trying hard to produce action packed movies but with bunch on twist added. Gone are the days when we would know beforehand who is the bad guy.

Haha yeah, tier 2,3 cities are exposed to a lot of Hollywood now, so these twists are needed.

The Shining, it may be one of the most influential horror movie in history but it is also arguably the worst adaption in history; terrible in that regard. King's dissatisfaction over the years as a result is absolutely justified for that reason.

Their(Kubric and King’s) visions were different, thing is even when King made Shining TV miniseries to address his issues and show his adaptation it fell flat.
As a book fan you might like that , check it out.

Am not sure what went on back then but Kubric would need King to sign off on that movie right ? maybe legally and from the POV of rights things got messy but it is hard to believe King would give him the thumbs up given how both visions were completely distinct.

If I ignore the novel, Kubric did a terrific job in presenting a thriller/suspense oriented horror to viewers who were mostly use to a very frantic pace in those days; so it aged very well although initial reception was mixed.

However, I can't see it even as an adaptation; Kubric's take was more self sufficient in that the lead was driven by evils within unlike in the novel where there is a high degree of supernatural elements, Jack was actually a good guy despite a few mistakes and he loved his family a great deal; by the end you do have sympathy for him, the Overlook practically consumed his soul. The portrayal of Wendy was also quite poor, she was just another generic American house wife who was there to just scream and cry lol her character had more depth then that, she was a lot stronger and more fierce in the novel. Mr.Halloran has quiet the back story and while his involvement in the book to begin with was minimal he plays a huge role during the final 1/4 and we get more of an insight into his life. I think the character of Dan would have been the most difficult to execute in the big screen given how young he was.

Do you think the TV series is still worth it ? for me the Haunting of Hill House is probably the best "spiritual" adaptation of the Overlook and its influence in the Shining, it obviously was based on Shirley Jackson's novel but the director was heavily influenced by King and his book, Mike's work in general is heavily influenced by King, this is why am very excited for Doctor Sleep!

Only disappointment is I may not be able to read the book prior to the movie but I think Mike and King duo will do a great job and make it an enjoyable experience in itself, they find themselves in a unique situation where they will be adapting the novel and also having it as a sequel to both the Shining movie and book (which not everyone would have read) with elements of Mike's own vision then combining it all

Also unlike before, now Bollywood have got bigger budget and more technologies to make Hollywood like action movies.

Yea but bores me to see cgi like Hobbs and Shaw, I prefer Daredevil,Atomic blond,John Wick or Mad Max kind of action now, prefer single take action sequences.

I ll check out Haunting Hill , the Shining series is corny but since you read the book you might like it.

Doctor Sleep looks interesting, and Im probably going to see it in the first weekend.

Wendy was poor as such, I think it was meant to scare you mentally than bring in supernatural stuff in Kubrick's version, he was defn disturbed individual.
I feel Kubrick didn’t acknowledge the supernatural aspect at all and thats why Jack Nicholson appeared crazy from getgo.(which King hated).

I dont usually watch movies (unless they are overly hyped) I like movies like shawshank redemption and good will hunting. Anybody have any movies similar to those please reccomend them.

Defo check out the haunting of hill house think we have a thread on it here, can't praise it enough. I felt the shining's influence were most seen in that show, more recently Mike was adamant he wants to cover the Overlook in Doctor Sleep (despite ending in the book) shows what a big fan he was of its lead role in the novel, I feel those elements which didn't exist in Kubric's vision were addressed in that show and there is that aspect of mental health to

Kubric's vision was also inspired by his personal views being someone who didn't believe in God etc so supernatural elements etc were stuff he wouldn't want to visit, there is a funny story of him making a long distance call in those days to ask King if he believes in God and if he exists, when King said Yes he does, Kubric disagreed with him and hung up right away :))

You will love One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, one of my all time fav movies think I have it as no.1 in me PP interview. It is of a similar feel good vein to the movies you have seen although in a different light

The Lives Of Others, The Secret In Their Eyes.

This movie was the first which came to my mind as well. Other suggestions for Bilal are ;
12 Angry Men, American Beauty, To Kill a mocking bird, The Truman Show, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Rain Man, Green Mile, Casablanca , V for Vendetta, The Pianist and A few good men.

Don't let the black and white ones discourage you. These movies are treat to watch without colors.

The Ninth Gate. Underrated. Definitely one of Polanski’s weaker films but still good. Had the paranoia element of Rosemary’s Baby as wel

Thanks I'll definitely watch these. I love movies which inspire you or make you think differently.

Will second all those in the lists above plus off the top of my head I will add Forrest Gump, Schindler's List, Stand by Me and Before sunrise (the entire trilogy is pretty good)
If you are ok with subtitles then you must watch Life is Beautiful, Cinema Paradiso (one of my absolute favorites), City of God and Secret in their eyes.

Bollywood movies r still pretty bang on average. Their stories are still trash. And in fact have gotten worse.

On the contrary, its much better than trash served from 1992-2009
From the time Dev D has done well in 2009 , there has been a wave of amazing independent cinema and also directors taking risks.

I would much rather watch Badhai Ho , Andhadhun getting box office numbers than effin Kaho na Pyaar hai.

The stories are also much much better now without following the linear model from Piku, Masaan, Andhadhun, Udaan , Gangs of Wasseypur etc..

Commercial cinema in last 3 years has completely changed, Shah Rukh hasnt been able to deliver a hit forever now, Salmans movies are only recovering the amounts and Amirs Thugs trash flopped miserably.

Vicky , Ayushman , Raj Kumar have also made sure that there is a standard expected mow from actors, all star sons barring Ranbir are getting flops on flops.

This is the best time in bollywood since 1980s when Govind Nihalani , Mahesh Bhatt were making original movies.

But yes War was Average.

The Khans era is over.

Srk seems to be ruining his legacy by producing garbage movies.

I was a fan but not anymore. Ive found salmans more entertaining to watch.

Amir keeps recycling the same material.

Even in hollywood 90% are just recyclea material with different named characters

Since you're a fan of Ayushmann Khurrana, have you seen Article 15? I liked it. I have seen on IMDB that the Indian movies that deal with self reflection on national issue tend to have good ratings but also get a lot of abuse in the 1 rated reviews section like Family Man, Article 15, Pariyerum Perumal etc to name a few and tend to watch them as they are more introspective and critical of society. However the number of quality Indian reviewers and voters has been increasing of late.

Thats one movie I haven’t watched, the only reason I didn’t watch in theater was my mental bias where the upper caste is playing the savior, I know baby steps but AAkhrosh (priyadarshan) had Ajay playing discriminated caste and he was the officer.

Yup, I know many who believe untouchability/discrimination doesn’t exist anymore and want removal of reservation, these people are probably the ones giving harsh reviews that are critical of the society.

I do like Ayushman though because of his script choices and screen presence but I’m aware that Rajkumar Rao and Vicky are much better actors than him, waiting to watch Judgemental hai kya!

But Directors & script writers are not great in action genre. The last decent crime action movie from Bollywood for me was "Don 2".

Action is great down south, action in URI was good too, full on action is only good in Telugu and Tamil cinema.

Just watched 22 Jump Street.

May watch Ad Astra now (but not sure yet).

You've been binge watching like crazy. Respect.

I'm hoping to watch some movies this weekend so could you please tell me the top 5 movies I should watch. Movies have recently been released would be more preffered by me.
Thanks

Damn. You watched a lot of trash in there. At least you saw a few good movies

Just finished watching Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

It had lots of unrealistic action scenes but I kind of liked the movie.

Watched Cloud Atlas again last night. What a lovely film. The Wachowskis’ best IMO.

This gave me goosebumps, for all those who are massive fans of the shining universe / novel hopefully this release does King justice.

Watched Cloud Atlas again last night. What a lovely film. The Wachowskis’ best IMO.

Sadly flopped, also somehow i didnt know Wachowskis brothers became sisters, not sure how i missed this news for years.

I find the movie amazing as well but i never understood what was the link between many stories esp the older ones, was it like if those two people meet at any birth one becomes harmful to another eventhough there are good on their own?

Saw it in theater, I liked it , again the fans of book didn't like it. I feel they did as best as they could to show diff perspectives.

leatherface58 what did you make of the movie ? am sure you have also read the book.

I am embarassed to admit I have not read the novel though I have borrowed it from the library with the intention of reading it. The movie is really good. It is a movie which improves on repeat viewings. The beginning is excellent and the end is wonderful. It slows down in the middle and is a bit overlong but Kubrick is a masterful director who keeps the movie flowing.

Any other mediocre director would have made a meal of the story but Kubrick keeps it going. I admit I did not like it too much when I saw it as a kid but as an adult, I appreciate it more. Not my most favorite horror movie but a good movie nonetheless.

I think Flanagan will do a superb job. He has not made a bad movie/series yet which is stupendous considering how inconsistent even legends of horror can be.

A really good watch.

Watched El Camino as soon as it got released. Was like an extended episode of BB, but without most of the action. Bit underwhelming .

Happy at the conclusion though.
