What's new

Which Bollywood movie has the best soundtrack?

I think 2001's Dil Chahta Hai was a great bunch of songs.

Very ahead of the times.

A R Rahman soundtracks of the 90s were out of this world. To be honest, he was never a crowd pleaser in those days. That is the reason his music in those days had very traditional Indian and sufi roots. Apart from his more famous sound tracks from movies like Dil Se, Taal or Rangeela, there were many less popular ones like b. Man those were the days. He doesn't make the same music anymore.

That Rahman is long gone man. He either makes fusion World music stuff or routine by-the-numbers tracks in films these days. That genuine risk taking is not to be seen. His last ATG soundtrack was in "Boys" (tamil) in 2004 or something.

His newer style has produced a few gems though.

Try this : New York Nagaram . You don't need the language to enjoy this one, I rate this his best in the past 10-12 years

What a gem man.. So underrated, just like the films. On of the greatest post 2000 OSTs.

I think Rangeela would have to be my 2nd favourite

2 amazing songs

aliasad1998 You missed my favourite :

Raja Hindustani (surprised nobody mentioned this.)
Rangeela
Pardes
Dil se
Taal
Dil chahta hai
Lagaan

I'm not a fan of Rajesh Roshan, i feel he plagiarizes a lot of music for his Brother's and Nephew's (Hrithik) films . .But if he ever did some good work , his best tracks are in Karan Arjun and Kaho Na Pyar hai ..

My favourites from either tracks:

And from Kaho Na Pyar hai :

What I feel is one of Bollywood's ATG top 10 songs:

Always heard great things about the “Aashiqui” soundtrack. Could never understand the hype and admiration. Until a few days ago when I listened to it properly. Every single song is really great. Overall has to be one of the best soundtracks

Funny just had this discussion yesterday and unanimously agreed that Taal is one of the best soundtracks put together closely edging Dil Se.

I like Dil Se a lot but I think the title track is very overrated. Overall probably by favourite AR Rahman soundtrack closely followed by Rangeela but I think Tanha Tanha is my favourite overall AR Rahman song

Aashiqui 2. Definitely one of the best soundtracks around. Arijit took it to the next level (considering his start) with sublime performances by Ankit Tiwari (Sun Raha) and Mustafa Zahid (Bhula Dena) and Shreya Goshal who did a great (and imo a better) job with the female version of Sun Raha. The lyrics were awesome too.

Not a big fan of the second ones soundtrack although it is good. Talking about the first one here which is considered one of the greatest Bollywood soundtracks ever

Aashiqui's soundtrack was really good too. Dheere Dheere, Main Duniya Bhula Dunga, Tu Meri Zindagi Hai etc. Saajan has a really underrated soundtrack.

Oh :farhat. Yeah the first one had a compilation of such songs that each one could be a great one even as a stand alone song, never mind them being compiled together, something which btw I didn't know until I saw the song list now. Had heard all of them but didn't know they were from the same movie. However I wouldn't consider it in my all time favourite soundtracks.

Rahul Roy used to have some really good songs in his movie. Tere Dar Par Sanam is another amazing song.

Btw forgot to mention that I later found out that he had a crush on a teacher and used to play tere dar par sanam when picking her up and tum to tehre pardesi while dropping her back home.

I ‘m somehow am unable to take 90s as great bollywood music ,at best Dilse, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam , DDLJ were good.

Another which i forgot to mention initially- Kabhi Kabhi , amazing lyrics and music.

Mukesh was brilliant.

Dil Se has some smooth tracks. Music well ahead of its time

Forgot about Raj Kapoor's "Sangam" and Rishi Kapoor's "Bobby".

Bobby is really unique , every track is very different from each other.

Sangam is somehow the most boring movie ever but has excellent songs also Har dil Jo pyaar karega became a title of a movie as well.

Another one is Waqt old movie , some excellent songs in that as well with the iconic: oh meri zohra jabeen

I agree Sangam was a real bore but the songs were great (dost dost na raha, mera parem patar, there man ghi gangs, ho mere sanam etc).Waqt was good movie and good songs.

Dil Se is one of those evergreen albums that sounds just as fresh and modern even today 23 years after its release. AR Rahman as a composer is in a league of his own.

AR Rahman’s recent stuff has been so awful. I feel that it goes hand in hand with the rapidly deteriorating quality of Bollywood music and singers in general. For this reason I don’t know if he can be considered the greatest ever Indian composer anymore

Exactly loved the movie(Waqt) , have childhood memories of it watching with grandparents!
Meaningful lyrics as well for all the songs.

Aage bhi jaane na tu

Music quality has been falling world over, I was listening to english top list on spotify and i heard someone remix “I want it that way” from Backstreet boys, imagine the cringe.

My major issue is lyrics with bollywood, really below par due to auto tune stars but i would still say its better than 90s when it was below:

“Ruk ruk ruk arrey baba ruk”
“ Jab bhi koi ladki dekhoon mera ... ole ole”
“ Tu cheez badi hai”
“ Gore gore mukhde pe kaala kaala chasma”
“meri marzi”

If you thought Baadshah was bad just making sure you actually remember 90s.

Tanha Tanha was essentially an item song. Compare that with current item songs. Simple as that. AR Rahman’s new stuff is unlistenable almost and cannot be distinguished from the rest of the trash.

His tamil ones are still pretty good esp with Mani Ratnam, I think he has lost interest in Hindi.

Also Rockstar was an excellent album, top one from
last decade!

Lyrics and music were good, just the video execution was trash and had no bearing whatsoever to he overall song. I heard the audio version first and still consider it a good song.

Yeah the video is pretty dumb :)) The song itself and lyrics do make sense in the context of the movie though

Just rewatched the video, apart from Jackie's foot fetish and Urmilas manga-ish over acting the lyrics and singing are pretty good

Yai zindagi toh waise aik sazaa hai, saath kisi ka ho to aur yai mazaa hai
