In October, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) sent a chartered flight carrying Indian nationals back home, marking a growing trend in deportations to India.

This was no ordinary flight - it was one of multiple large-scale “removal flights” carried out this year, each typically carrying more than 100 passengers. The flights were returning groups of Indian migrants who "did not establish a legal basis to remain in the US".

According to US officials, the latest flight carrying adult men and women was routed to Punjab, close to many deportees' places of origin. No precise breakdown of hometowns was provided.

In the US fiscal year 2024 which ended in September, more than 1,000 Indian nationals had been repatriated by charter and commercial flights, according to Royce Bernstein Murray, assistant secretary at the US Department of Homeland Security.

“That has been part of a steady increase in removals from the US of Indian nationals over the past few years, which corresponds with a general increase in encounters that we have seen with Indian nationals in the last few years as well,” Ms Murray told a media briefing. (Encounters refer to instances where non-citizens are stopped by US authorities while attempting to cross the country’s borders with Mexico or Canada.)

As the US ramps up repatriations of Indian nationals, concerns grow about how President-elect Donald Trump's immigration policies will affect them. Trump has already promised the biggest deportation of migrants in history.

Since October 2020, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials have detained nearly 170,000 Indian migrants attempting unauthorised crossings at both the northern and southern land borders.

“Though smaller than the numbers from Latin America and the Caribbean, Indian nationals represent the largest group of migrants from outside the Western Hemisphere encountered by the CBP in the past four years,” say Gil Guerra and Sneha Puri, immigration analysts at Niskanen Center, a Washington-based think tank.

As of 2022, an estimated 725,000 undocumented Indian immigrants were in the US, making them the third-largest group after those from Mexico and El Salvador, according to new data, external from the Pew Research Center. Unauthorised immigrants in all make up 3% of US’s total population and 22% of the foreign-born population.

Looking at the data, external, Mr Guerra and Ms Puri have identified notable trends in the spike in Indians attempting illegal border crossings.

For one, the migrants are not from the lowest economic strata. But they cannot secure tourist or student visas to the US, often due to lower education or English proficiency.

Instead, they rely on agencies charging up to $100,000 (£79,000), sometimes using long and arduous routes designed to dodge border controls. To afford this, many sell farms or take out loans. Not surprisingly, data from the US immigration courts in 2024 reveals that the majority of Indian migrants were male, aged 18-34.

Second, Canada on the northern border has become a more accessible entry point for Indians, with a visitor visa processing time of 76 days (compared to up to a year for a US visa in India).

The Swanton Sector - covering the states of Vermont and counties in New York and New Hampshire - has experienced a sudden surge in encounters with Indian nationals since early this year, peaking at 2,715 in June, the researchers found.

Earlier, most irregular Indian migrants entered the Americas through the busier southern border with Mexico via El Salvador or Nicaragua, both of which facilitated migration. Until November last year, Indian nationals enjoyed visa-free travel to El Salvador.

Growing up in the UK, I grew up with a lot of Indians, Sikhs, Hindus etc but all were born and raised in the UK, in the same town as me.

Now I often bump into Indians who cant speak English, live in small places and dont seem very confident. A few seem to be illegals but of course I cant confirm this, apart from one who openly stated he is.

We often here its illegals in India but it seems millions are living illegally abroad. Why is this ?

Also..have you met any Illegal Indians in your native country ? Of course if you are one and reading this , it doesnt count.

Many Indian posters here do chest thumping about India. But, why are Indians leaving India (both legally and illegally) in big numbers if it is so great?

There are illegal Indians in Bangladesh too. At least 1 million illegal Indians in Bangladesh --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indians_in_Bangladesh#:~:text=According to Daily Industry, there,in Bangladesh illegally in 2022..

The numbers are staggering, no wonder Trump wants them booted out quickly.

"As of 2022, an estimated 725,000 undocumented Indian immigrants were in the US,"

The real number is always way higher.

So the question in the title of the BBC article is very fair....why are they risking it all if India is such a great place to live ...which we read regularly.

Only illegals I heard about personally were living above a deli run by an English guy. Not sure who the landlord was but the deli got an infestation of flies, and when the pest control was called there were something like 5 immigrants sleeping on the floor in sleeping bags. The fly infestation had exploded because there was open garbage bags strewn around the flat, and the pest control guy refused to go in there until they had cleaned it up.

Its a really tough live as a illegal in the UK and most of the west now. Indians cannot claim to be refugees either unlike other nationalities. When they cant obtain legal accommodation or help from local councils, they will find themselves in horrid conditions, be used by employers, paid peanuts etc.

It also cost the locals , hence they are disliked.

@KingKhanWC
This is for you. Our government is working with US about this issue. It’s a disgrace if our people are using illegal routes to enter any country and we must work with the respective governments to bring them back and punish them.

This will be good reading for US citizens. Im assuming this is the first batch, with others to follow. Imo there are way over 1 million illegal Indians in USA atm.

You mention punishment. What would the punishment be? Any recent cases?

A lot of them came over when there were fake colleges popping up all over the place, and to be fair there were Pakistanis coming over using the same illegal channels. I only heard about these Indian guys because of the literal stink they caused in that street. There were five of them shacked up in one room sleeping during the day. Presumably they were working nights in restaurants or takeaways or something.

It is so much fun reading these heart burn posts from Bardfordians

My advice is not to enter UK illegaly buddy. Its very risky , dangerous and the living conditions you will face are horrid.

Stay in India but if you really want to visit UK, I know a few Indian girls, Ill send over a visit visa...as long as you can pay well.

Youre aware of the high rent in the UK. They prob earn as little as £4/5 an hour, working long hours in hot , unhygienic facilities and then live in small properties with a number of other illegals. Its a tough tough life.

What I find interesting is many can speak a decent amount of English. Surely they can find jobs in India , something better than this or is India all hype as some sort of next first world nation?

How many of the Indians on here who wax lyrical about Shining India live in India themselves? I think that answers your question.

I would guess 95% outside of India. I know @Local.Dada is a legal new immigrant to US, good on him for taking the lawful route. But he has never stated his reason for leaving?

Do you remember this? It seems some illegals can get decent jobs. But at UKIP who are most against immigration.. made me chuckle.

"Immigration officials raided an Indian restaurant during a UK Independence Party conference dinner, sending the chef "running into the night".

Bringing them back is itself a punishment I don’t think they will go too harsh on people after bringing them back. For sure the return flight and accommodation expenses etc all should be recovered from the respective people

Interesting and surprising question. Hopefully it helps other brown bros living in some ghetto in England on benefits,

Here is the answer: people who have families and career , want to look out for what’s good for both and make choices according to those
Priorities. If I had left a good job in India and was washing dishes or toilets in USA it would be a very valid question.

maybe this seems common sense for Indian sensibilities like family and career growth, so let me put the same question back to you - why did your people move to England after they got utopia called Pakistan after a well earned fight? I am sure there was no banking or tech type industires back then, so why did they move to England to do petty small business or blue collar labor? Check with grandpa and get back to
Me; this question made me curious too.

Chacha...I asked you for an arm wrestling match...not sure why not accepting my challenge. Considering your age, I will come light on you.

You seem insulted, there is no need. My family came over in the late 50's and were given a visa to come over as workers were needed after WW2 to build the country back. They came over legally, had good housing and worked hard , inc building a community and helping other family members.

Everyone moves abroad for economic reasons unless they are rich but wannabees thinking they are Cooper not Kumar.

The point you are missing is when you moved and even now you claim with others , India is some sort of great nation to live in with many opportunities, hence the question why.

Again well done for taking the legal route but if India is so better than Pak and others, why not go back? Its not like you were born in the US, you have an Indian accent and will never be seen as American, unless you can put on a Texan accent quickly and wear a hat with boots. My elders spend half the year in Pak, and only return to UK to see family and spend time with them. They are Pakistani and want to live in the land. Why dont you?

If you're in the UK, sure but I dont usually accept combat challenges from vegetarians, its unfair esp if they are as Mamus from Bombay.

But sure start a new thread on your combat history, it will be fun,

It says no action was taken against that restaurant, but if the chef was legally employed, why did he do a runner causing much hilarity at the UKIP table?

Whatever career I have was because of the job I got in “India” I was able to get due to my education in “India”. I didn’t take US c citizenship even if iam eligible because my country doesn’t allow dual nonsense. I live 6 months of the year in India because my parents don’t want to stay in USA and prefer India. So do my in-laws and other elders. That’s what you will see from most. I am not even from some rich/elite family just upper middle class.

Recently some Pakistanis died unfortunately in the boat capsize event, you probably aren’t even aware of that news because you are busy discussing some random MLA in Rajasthan which you cannot point on a map. That’s the point.

Again, well done for the legal route and its great youve been offered citizenship. Why not end your Indian citizenship and take US ? As eventually you'll live most of your life in USA and its easier to get a visa to India than vice versa?

Do you prefer the American culture more than Indian one?

Too cooking lamb curry for Farage to making dhal for Modi, he probably wants more skills on his resume.

No, the point is that most Pakistanis are well aware that a significant portion of the population wants to leave Pakistan due to political instability and economic challenges, and they openly criticize the generals and politicians without taking offense.

On the other hand, Indians tend to get defensive when it's pointed out that they are the third-largest group crossing the U.S. southern border illegally. This reaction is understandable given they are repeatedly told that India has become a superpower and India has when it is compared to Pakistan in the region.

Indians should be happy this information is being presented.

H-1B VISA HOLDERS IN US WORRIED AFTER TRUMP RETURN

Not just undocumented Indians, even those on temporary visas, like H-1B, in the US are on the edge after Trump's return.

Indians, who dominate the H-1B visa category, are also likely to feel the impact of Trump’s immigration policies. In 2023, Indian nationals accounted for 72% of the 386,000 H-1B visas issued or renewed, a slight drop from 77% of the 320,000 approved visas in 2022. Trump's crackdown on both undocumented immigrants and legal visa categories signals a challenging road ahead for many who seek to work or reside in the US.

Many Indians struggle to even make a short visit to their parents in the US in their wait for t"
