Why is Salman Butt being promoted by Lahore Qalandars?

Probably the most disgraced personality in Pakistan cricket's history.

How come a player who is consistently failing in domestics, add to it his past disgraceful record, being promoted so much by Lahore Qalandars?

He was even in the MCC game!

What is LQ getting out of making Butt their poster boy? It's not as if he has set domestic T20 on fire or even ODIs with his amazing strike rates.

So, why do it?

... and lastly, how will people support LQ in the PSL with Butt in that side?
 
Well, they picked him, so they are going to promote all of their players.

I just looked at his numbers. They're not horrible, but they're not exactly jaw-dropping either. Desperate for a PSL title, I guess.

Well actually he has done rather well at domestic level since his comeback. You could almost compare him to another dodgy player who you strongly support - Kami. Double standards clearly?

Yeah that's the mystery.

His performances haven't been good enough to be considered, esp. for a person of his disgraceful history and upper 30s age.

So.. how come he got selected, and earning big bucks?!

No wonder LQ continue to remain at the bottom. And hopefully they'll remain at the bottom.

Try better.

1. Kami is currently one of the best openers in the domestic circuit, plays at a healthy strike rate.

2. One of the best PSL players with excellent strike rates.

3. Not a cheat, didn't sell his country and 2 quality bowlers.

... Before comparing please think!

If Amir can play, why not him? He's a whole-hearted Lahori and has played tremendously in past few years. I am surprised why he was not named the captain.
 
He got lucky, not to get caught in whole spot fixing saga. There were lots of pics of him salman and bookie in private parties, in cars only three of them and restaurants. All those catches he dropped wasn’t only bc he has butter fingers.
 
Kami is leagues above Butt and most other Pak batsman atleast in PSL
Butt is whack should stick to fixing and creating cringy YouTube videos
 
I think it’s because of how loyal he is to Lahore. Even when he was captain for that brief moment, he did everything to include Lahore based players into his teams. The likes of Imran Farhat, Kami, Yousuf, Azhar Ali, Umar Akmal, Wahab etc were all guaranteed a start.

Fawad Rana is also a cartoon to be honest. No one should take that man seriously.

This is such a bad precedent. This shows that not only can you make money off match-fixing, you can comeback and be promoted for it.
 
If I recall correctly, Aqib was doing Butt a friends favour last year when he randomly convinced Fawad Rana to pick Salman Butt as a replacement to an injured player.

Aqib probably knows that Salman has been suffering financially for quite some time now. It must be so hard to live in Pakistan with a criminal record, limited job opportunities and poor remuneration rates playing FC cricket
 
It’s Pakistan cricket. We are the laughing stock of the world. Match and spot fixing is the norm. It don’t faze anyone.

Salman was captain of the test side, disgraced Pakistan cricket to a level it will never be forgotten. We are second class compared to all other test playing nations. No dignity no pride no integrity.

His selection even at domestic cricket where he can further influence young upcoming talent from poor backgrounds.

A new fixing scandal can come out tomorrow and I won’t be surprised. Fixing is still happening in our cricket, it’s just not come to light again.

If you want to say that he shouldn't have been picked, have at it, but to criticize a team for promoting one of their players is ridiculous.
 
PSL is Mates and Buddies League. Don't expect merit to be a priority when there's paychecks to give to one's besties.
 
Did ok in FC but in T20S, with probably the best bowling of all leagues, he’s bound to fail .LQ have scored a big OG ,another season at the bottom of the league

He's not exactly been rushed back into the team, I can't see the problem
I don't even think think he'll be on the pitch until some of the other openers get dropped

I’m not sure that’s completely accurate. Living in a well off area of Lahore doesn’t mean that the family has a regular fortune coming in monthly. Plus Salman Butt is a man who needs to provide for his family. The family income must have been dented seriously after his 5 year prison sentence

He is free to play domestic cricket.

And he hasn't done anything of note there, especially in T20s and his strike rate is abysmal.

So, getting him to a much higher profile stage is wrong. First, he didn't do anything to deserve it, and 2nd, it makes us look bad.

Imagine other players and intl stars who would be super uncomfortable with him around.

Let me clarify another thing. I'm no Kami "fan". Kami isn't a world-beater either. But, you have to think of solutions and think tactically, about the World T20.

We have two options, both tried and tested:

Option 1:
Openers with limited ability. Tried, failed. Not tried as many times as Kami. Currently failing in domestics/internationals.

Option 2:
Kami - has the ability to hit pacers, give us quick starts. Wasn't consistent back then. Now topping domestic charts.

It's a no-brainer for me that I'll take someone with ability there, someone who can play and hit pace, and is in hot domestic form.

He's just better among the available options. He's not world class. But he's much better than the alternatives, who have limited ability too.

You have to think rationally and not from a blind-hate-perspective.

Very good post

Glad someone mentioned this.

I am sick of him talking to new players like Naseem and others. You don't get to see Azharuddin coaching and chatting with Indian players although he was 10 times the player Butt was.
 
If they want to finish last again then they're on the right track, salman hasnt done much in t20 cricket.
 
As much as i despise Salman Butt the captain of Pak who disgraced us, we cannot be hypocrites and need to come with the same energy as we do when discussing Mohammed Amir pre test retirement.

To be fair Butt lied throughout as oppose to amir but amir is just ungrateful.

Blacklist these players who played any part in fixing
 
Bigger question is why was he even picked, do they really need a 36-year old who has a SR of 113, and who last played a T20 over a year ago?

At least explains why they've been the worst PSL team so far, totally mismanaged franchise
 
He is very well-connected. I initially thought he only had friends in the media who keep talking him up and saying how he is on the cusp of test selection. Regardless its these kind of hair-brained decisions that end up costing the Qalandars every season.
 
No such thing as bad publicity. More eyes, more discussion like this all works in your favor.
 
Surprising pick, but that's the Qalandars for you.

Just never know who they're going to choose.
 
I wouldn't even mind if he was any good for that format. But really, you wouldn't pick Salman Butt even at his best for a T20 game.

He has served his time. If Amir, Sharjeel and in the past Wasim, Waqar, Inzimam, Moin can play then Salman butt also deserves the chance to play. He is playing for franchise cricket anyway dont see what the fuss is about.

Salman butt's father had lots of money to begin with ( he was my senior in Beacon House) in the 90z.

Spent a lot of money to get into school team (wont give details lol)

has made lots of money in his cricketing times

i wont be surprised if he is actually spending money to be in the Qalandar team

otherwise, he, alongside with Azam Khan, Asad Shafiq, Khurram Mazor and Awais Zia are the worst picks in PSL history

I don't have anything against his talent, he should be in the odi squads but strange to see him back this year when he's never been a t20 player

He is a top order batsmen, an opener ... so who would u want him to replace?

Iman - avg 54, man of series in SA, hundereds against Eng, SL, Bng, Zim, all away from home
Abid Ali - Going head and shoulder above everyone else
Shaan Massod - easily the most improved batsmen for the last 2 years after babar and harris

Salman Butt is way past his prime, has no idea of modern day cricket, is not physically fit and his muddled mindset wont be good for the team

Good that LQ is losing, they deserve it after selecting Butt.

He was very good in WT20 2010. It is a shame because he was coming into his peak years as a batsman at 26-27, and should have been prolific across formats for many years.

People talk about Amir and Asif throwing it away, but this guy could have captained Pakistan for a decade. He was well loved by the PCB and had little competition for the opening spot.

He was also educated and presentable, basically a superior version of what Masood is today, but there was no Babar etc. to steal the spotlight in the batting department.

However, after such a long lay-off he is probably not good enough for Limited Overs formats anymore. He played a few games last year and looked out of touch.
 
And he's playing today.

How can anyone support this LQ team?

They're beyond shameless. Glad they're losing today and no way winning the cup anyway.
 
Pathetic maybe but there is no difference to him, sharjeel or Amir. We have to be consistent no matter how you want to spin it.
 
Lahore deserve a thrashing every game if they keep on selecting cheats and traitors

Butt was a pathetic batsman always, and even worse now. Didn't play any meaningful T20 or list A knock at a high strike rate.

Never deserved to be selected, so why is he playing?

What a selfish innings from him. He made no attempt at the target, just played for himself. Can't believe anyone can actually back him and say he's there on merit?!
 
They used to have Haris Sohail on the bench who is a hundred times better t20 player than him

As far as I remember, Butt was actually retained by Lahore during the drafts. Meaning he was guaranteed a spot right from the start.

It was obvious thats what they were doing. Islamabad caught on and made sure to collect the important wickets. Bhutt did not look like at any point he was timing the ball. Heck it looked like this was his first international game.
 
I think they are struggling to get 11 fit players on the field so they are having to utilise every single resource they have.

I think Fawad Rana maybe asked to put the pads on soon.
 
LQ need a factory reset.

Picking Butt for T20s in 2020, making a pathetic 34 year old captain, maintaining a diabolical coach and owners who seem to thrive on defeats because it has made them popular.

Should keep on selecting players and coaches because they hail from Lahore. Gotta give it to them...5 years and no change in how they approach the tournament. Kudos

Absolute disgrace of a franchise. Making all us Lahoris suffer. I don't even care anymore I actually enjoy watching these guys lose now because there incompetent a**es deserve it. I will only support the Lahore franchise if it is rebooted and sold off to someone else Fawad Rana is clueless.
 
Pakistani fans should move on and forgive Butt.

There have been bigger fixers than Butt throughout our history. Salman deserves the right to earn an honest living.

Sharjeel is not world class and never was, i despise butt just as much as most on here, all i am saying is he has done his time, and he is being selected now, whether he is a good t20 player is another question all together but a few day ago the same arguments were being made against Shaan who is a very similar player to Butt, and now everyone is singing his praises.
