What's new

Will Hashim Amla end his Test career with an average of 50 or above?

He has been fantastic for SA over the years and even when he is struggling, he is able to dig deep and score tough runs for his team. That's what makes you a great player.

He used to pad up his stats with meaningless knocks on dead tracks. Now not many runs. But the runs he gets are valuable.

Amla has been the main batsman during South Afric's golden run in tests (2010 - 2012), he's scored twice as many match winning away knocks than Kohli. Amla is a stat padder in ODIs, not tests. Early 2010s Amla was better than current Kohli.

Kohli top scored from either team in SA and England.

The equivalent for Amla would be top scoring in India and Australia, did the early 2010s Amla do so?

Measuring batsmen by matches won is a flawed logic. It helps to have a gun team, isn't it? You can score all the runs you want but ultimately it is the quality of the guys surrounding you that decides whether you win or not. Otherwise only Australian and SA guys would be termed great. Kohli scored 4 centuries in Aus and look what happened. He could not have done more. Lara and Tendulkar would not be in the discussion by this logic. India have won at Joburg, Trent Bridge and MCG last year with Kohlis knocks. It is a sign of team improving not necessarily Kohli. Put Amla in the old Indian team and he would not be among matches won often.

PS: Amla is a great in tests. No doubt about it.

I was responding to Amla scoring soft runs in tests.

He has influenced match/series by being a standout dominant performer over a test series in India, England and Australia. That alone makes him a SA test great irrespective of his career average.

He is also a highly successful ODI player and held the record of "fastest to multiple of 1000 runs" during his run.

Certainly a SA great and one of the best batsmen from his own era.

Might even go under 45 at this rate. Forget ATG, he will have to be satisfied as a South African great.

Averaged 52 against the best bowling attack in the world a few short weeks ago, so he's not complete done yet.

That's honestly not a bad place to be. People here tend to think if you don't have pitch perfect stats, you are no good.

That's a steep fall from what he used to be. In early 2010s, Amla was the best batsman in South Africa and arguably the best in the world in tests. Hard to believe it's the same player, he's almost become a tailender.

He is going through a bad phase now just like he went through a great phase around 2010. This might sadly be the end. But if you take his overall career into perspective, he is one of the greats South Africa has produced not only for his batting but also for the way he has conducted himself on and off the field.

Your overall career is judged, not just your peak. He isn't playing charity matches right now.

Amla is denting his whole legacy.

Averaged 12 in the series against Sri Lanka. Has a Test average of 46.64 now.
