"Will show Modi government how to treat minorities": says Imran Khan

Can he simply amend the law or he needs support from other senators? I don't know if he has enough suppoort to amend law. I am not defending IK here, simply thinking aloud. I recall one lawmaker was shot dead in Pakistan who tried to stand up for miniroty. It may not be very simple to change this in few years. I think it will take decades if balls start rolling now.

I don't know what the law is in Pakistan, but I have heard the Islamic die hard arguments that a girl who can have a baby is an adult. When you call yourself an Islamic republic then you are going to have these sort of clerical issues. The law needs to be clarified, IK can't change things overnight, it will take a shift in mindset of the society as a whole.

Imran Khan himself doesn’t endorse these things, while Modi does. That’s the difference. Comparing Modi with Khan is like comparing apples and oranges.

Exactly World of difference between the two leaders Modi encourages violence n oppression Imran doesnt

It may take decades with one generation shifting a bit and then next generation shifting more. Hopefully with more interconnected world, process gets faster.

I am very hopeful that entire world is going to be a much better place to live for our next generation. Simply based on long-term trend. Even talking about this minority treatment issue in Pakistan, I am sure that it has been happening regularly, but due to internet it comes in limelight more often now as compared to 30 years back. I am also sure that more and more people within Pakistan are realizing the problem. So shift in mindset is happening. Now sometime due to Saudi funding and preachers, it may have taken a step back, but over the long-term, situation should keep getting better.

History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes. Many regions in our world have gone through this process. As country gets educated, mindset will change more and more. Yes, I am aware of many educated people also holding weird mindset, but I am talking about the general trend. It's going to be positive in long-term.

India receives a lot of flak nowadays for its treatment of minorities from Pakistanis.

However, minorities are much safer in India than Pakistan. There is not even a comparison. I doubt India would ever reach Pakistan’s level of persecution of minorities.

When it comes to killing and mistreating minorities, Pakistan is the undisputed champion.

There are many unsafe places in india where minorities will be targeted for their dietary habits or for allegedly keeping a particular kind of meat/transporting cattle.Indian media will report incidents related to mistreatment of minorities if it comes to their notice, few of them will show initial reluctance but they will eventually follow others path.

I condemn this act and SC and Govt should take notice of this if its true ...

btw, bro you can post more this kind of news on this thread if you want, but you should know that if i want to start a thread on India, thn its gonna be update on every 12 hours with such kind of news, i have enough damn material for this ....

so you better not try to to point score on other's person misery ....

I have no issues about posters here starting threads about mistreatment of minorities in India, there are enough threads related to that and it's been regularly updated, have you seen me complaining about those here ? Posters here reading our posts can easily judge who is interested in point scoring.

He does endorse these things, which is why he welcomed Fayyaz Chauhan back in the party after getting rid of him for a few months to protect him from the firing line.

Besides, it is not about beliefs and endorsement, it is about actions. If Imran cannot or does not want to back his words with actions, his endorsement is of no value.

The again, the whole world knows that he is a con-artist whose only expertise is fooling his cult-followers.

Agreed, many people forget PTI after all is a right-wing political organisation. Maybe not as far right as BJP, but still right-wing.

Yes. Bringing back Fayyaz Chohan was a huge mistake and PTI should be criticized for it.

However, my point is that Imran Khan and Narendra Modi can’t be compared. Imran has on numerous occassions denounced forced conversions and religious discrimination. Modi on the other hand promotes and encourages hate crimes. Comparing them is unfair to Imran Khan, he may have many faults, but hating minorities isn’t one of them.

Just because someone is right-wing doesn’t mean that they hate minorities. left-right is mostly about how much control the state should have over its people and the economy.

PTI is on the right on social/political issues, but are on the left when it comes to the economy. Imran Khan believes in more state intervention and in creating a welfare state.

4-5 examples to contrast it with IK? I am just curious because I have not come across so happy to be corrected.

If that’s their ideology that’s a disaster one for countries without much oil..
Isn’t that basically how Arab democracies would be?

That is so much like Modi ji. Wants to create a welfare state, and leaning right on political issues.

Over 1,000 Pakistani Hindus who came to India didn’t return to Pakistan

Over 1,000 Pakistani Hindus who entered India in the last two months after the enactment of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) have not returned to Pakistan on the expiry of their visas.

Many in the recent influx of Hindus from Pakistan to India through the Wagah Attari border in Punjab may have set their sights on availing the benefits of the new legislation.
In January this year alone, nearly 900 out of the about 1,200 Pakistani Hindus who visited India did not return to Pakistan. Last week, a Deccan Herald report highlighted the rise in Pakistani Hindus visiting India post the CAA.

In December last year, some 220 Pakistani Hindus of about 850 who entered India did not return to Pakistan on the expiry of visas. This was also seen in November in the run-up to the passing of the new law.

While the cut-off date to avail citizenship under the CAA is Dec. 31, 2014, non-Muslim citizens from Pakistan, mostly Hindus, seem to be encouraged to visit India with hopes of citizenship. About 2,500 Pakistani Hindus have crossed into India since December. Scores of them have preferred to stay put.

Among the group of nearly four dozen Pakistani Hindus who crossed over from Pakistan to Punjab last week was 22-year-old Lali, a Pakistani Hindu girl, who reportedly expressed her desire to remain in India.

The CAA provides eligibility to Hindus and other religious identities, barring Muslims, facing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to avail Indian citizenship. The Congress-ruled Punjab is opposing the CAA. The state is among the few that have passed a resolution in the Vidhan Sabha asking the Union Government to repeal the law.

Hence this is the reason we support CAA !

Example : a christian named asiaa bibi was sentenced to hanging for simply drinking water from a well which muslims use for drinking ! She was slapped with a fake 'blashphemy' law on her !

You don't need to support CAA to give asylum to anybody, freshly arrived Pakistanis won't get any benefit under CAA. These people will either spend rest of their life in any slum or will be deported

People protest in Karachi against forced conversion of Hindu girl Mehak Kumari

Members of the civil society along with lawyers held a protest outside Karachi press club on February 15. The protest was held under the aegis of Lalkar Social Forum to seek justice for Mehak Kumari, a minor Hindu girl who was abducted, forcibly converted and married to a Muslim man. Mehak was abducted by a middle aged man, Ali Raza, from the Jacobabad district of Sindh province on January 15. According to the girl, she was forced to accept Islam causing a widespread furore among the Islamic fanatics. Some Pakistani clerics want the minor girl dead after she retracted her previous statement in the court, where she said that she had accepted Islam of her own free will. Meanwhile, the court which is yet to announce the verdict has send Mehak Kumari to a local Dar-ul-Aman in Larkana district of Sindh for eleven days. Abduction and forceful conversion of Hindu and Christian girls is widespread in Pakistan. Such incidents have sparked widespread criticism as many victim families are forced to migrate in foreign countries, including India.

That's an Indian news article, I would take their version with a pinch of salt. That line about abduction and forceful conversion being widespread in Pakistan sounds like sensationalist propaganda. It may well have happened here, but is it widespread?

Would be better to stick to this case in hand and ask for justice here rather than weaken it by making wider allegations which are vague and politically motivated.

You actually think these Indians care about the minorities?
Name me a single Bhakht who's criticised Pakistan AND India itself.
All these bhakhts do is that they pick up whatever they can on Pakistan and turn a blind eye on what's happening in India itself

If they really cared they would have criticised their own government rather than cover their dirt up with some B-S excuse.

A bunch of hypocrites.

They don't realise how idiotic they sound. Acting like they're the benchmark of how minorities should be treated.

Have you watched the video, people were protesting in front of karachi press club yet Pakistan media showing no interest in reporting the news.I also don't take version of India media seriously but thousands of hindus seeking asylum in India are citing forceful conversion as major reason

Yes I saw the video, there were a handful of people protesting, and good for them, I wish there were more. Immigrants looking to move to India will say whatever suits their narrative, much like economic refugees to the west pretending to be fleeing persecution. That is assuming they are even saying it, why should we believe your account?

You can search for anything on google and find lots of stories planted by bots. If you are going to make sweeping statements like "Abduction and forceful conversion of Hindu and Christian girls is widespread in Pakistan" you will need some sort of verified accounts from a neutral source to back it up. A line like that thrown in an Indian news site doesn't carry quite the same clout.

They are not economic refugees they can lead a much much better life in any safe place in pakistan considering the amount of money they are spending to move to india, their educational qualifications have no value in india so most of them are doing menial jobs and living in conditions worse than Indian slums. What ever I said are based on media reports it's up to you to believe it or not.

If you were a Pakistani you would know that these forced conversions are somewhat limited to KPK and Sindh. There are barely any cases in Punjab so it's not widespread.

But as you're not a Pakistani, i won't criticise you for your ignorance

Anyone who can provide specific details is a verified account. But to show that abduction and rape of minorities is widespread in Pakistan would take some doing.

That said, even one isolated account is too much. That is why it is more important that Pakistan focuses on the genuine grievances case by case. Indian media propaganda is only deflecting from these.

Hindu minor girl who was forcefully converted renounces Islam; Pakistani clerics demand death penalty

A section of Islamic clerics in Pakistan is up in arms after a minor Hindu girl Mehak Kumari retracted her previous statement in the court where she stated that she wasn't converted forcefully to Islam.

Mehak Kumari had earlier admitted to willfully marrying Ali Raza and denied any external pressure behind her conversion to Islam.

This, however, sparked major protests from the Hindu community which accuses a government-Moulvi nexus behind widespread conversions in the country and selective targeting of Hindu girls.

Clerics have even demanded a death penalty to the minor who they say is a culprit of insulting Islam. They have rejected the probe and proceedings of Sessions Court and have already moved to the high court.

The clerics have even threatened to go to the Shariat Court if the girl is not brought to justice in a manner they want.

"The girl has renounced Islam and we will be acting as the Sharia law in the future. We have made an appeal in the high court and will be receiving an order tomorrow. If required, we will go to the Supreme Court and the Shariat Court," said one of the clerics while interacting with media.

The court, which has yet not announced its verdict, has sent Mehak Kumari to a local Dar-ul-Aman for eleven days.

The counsel representing the parents of Mehak, who are also the complainants in the case, informed that the court wanted to have a thorough investigation into the case and didn't want to rush the judgment under any pressure.

"The court has not announced any verdict and we have been given a time frame of eleven days. The court has further ordered to keep Mehak Kumari alias Nanki Kumari at a Dar-ul-Aman in Larkana district of Sindh. The next hearing is on February 18. The Additional Sessions Judge has also said that both the parties, the accused Ali Raza Solanki and complainant Ajay Kumar Wadwani will make separate requests to meet the girl. They will meet her separately in the presence of their own counsels," he said.

"We have moved our request to meet the girl. Ajay Kumar and I will be meeting the girl. Ali Raza Solanki has not moved any request thus far. We are hoping for the best to transpire on the 18th of the month. We have a lot of hopes from the judiciary, the judicial system and the government of Pakistan," he added.

While the cases of forceful conversions have always existed in Pakistan, a significant spike has been registered lately. The fundamentalists who hold great sway in the country have been pushing for such practices and have been encouraging youth into doing so.

While Prime Minister Imran Khan has presented several narratives about the condition of minorities in Pakistan, a perennially unsafe and scared minority in Pakistan is a harsh reality.

This is pertinent to mention here that India brought in the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the month of December last year to provide citizenship to persecuted minorities from three of its neighbouring countries including Pakistan.

Pakistan media not reporting this news ?
There are some videos circulating about this but those are not shared by verified sources.

First of a kind: Pakistan court nullifies converted minor Hindu girl's marriage

In probably the first of its kind judgement, a Pakistani court has nullified the marriage of a minor Hindu girl, who was converted to Islam and married to a Muslim man in the country's Sindh province.

The class IXth student was allegedly abducted from Jacobabad district on January 15 by Ali Raza Solangi who later married her.

Her father filed an FIR, claiming that Solangi had abducted and married her forcibly. He also said that her daughter was 15-year-old when she was abducted.

Additional Session Judge Ghulam Ali Kanasro ruled that the girl, who took the Muslim name of Aliza to marry Solangi, was underage.

The couple, however, claimed that she embraced Islam at a shrine after which they contracted a free-will marriage.

The judge citing evidence and documents ruled that the girl was underage and was not fit for marriage under section 3 and 4 of the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act.

He directed Larkana's senior police officials to take action against all those involved in conducting, facilitating and abetting the child marriage.

The girl was brought to the court from a women's shelter home from Larkana where she was sent on court orders soon after the couple was taken into custody.

Heavy security was witnessed in and around the court for the hearing to quell any unrest as local Hindu and Muslim leaders were present in town.

Hindus form the biggest minority community in Pakistan.

Abduction and conversion of Hindu women has been a major issue in Sindh province where the majority of Pakistani Hindus live.

Pakistan court nullifies marriage of minor Hindu girl

Jacobabad, Feb 19 (IANS) A court in Jacobabad in Sindh province of Pakistan nullified the free-will marriage of Hindu minor girl Mahek Kumari, as sought by her family, and asked the police to register a case against her alleged husband Ali Raza Solangi and six others within 24 hours.

Additional Sessions Judge-II, Jacobabad, Ghulam Ali Kanasro, on Tuesday citing the evidence and documents submitted to him declared that Mahek Kumari appeared below the age of 18 and was not fit for marriage under Sections 3 and 4 of the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013, Dawn reported.

However, the girl was sent to a shelter home rather than to her parents.

Kumari, a class IX student, had left for school on January 15 and did not return home. Solangi also went missing that day. About a week later, police traced them when they received intelligence reports about the couple''s presence at the shrine of Amrot Sharif. The couple claimed that they had contracted a free-will marriage after Mahek embraced Islam at the shrine and was renamed Aliza.

The judge referred the matter of the girl''s custody to the judicial magistrate concerned and directed the Jacobabad deputy commissioner to arrange/identify the nearest child protection institution for temporary custody of the girl where she could be kept till her production before the judicial magistrate for a trial. The Sindh government and police were given strict directives for the safety and security of the girl during her stay in the child protection institution.

A strong contingent of police drawn from five districts was deployed around the court amid fear of unrest/violence as local leaders of the Hindu and Muslim communities were present in the town in a tense atmosphere.

The access roads to the civil court were cordoned off with barbed wire at two points/main roundabouts and the area was closed to the general public.

Members of the Hindu community took out a rally from Gaushala in protest against what they believed to be the "forced conversion of Mahek Kumari". It was led by Babu Mahesh Kumar Lakhani, Jeay Sindh Mahaz-Riaz chief Riaz Chandio, Punhal Sario, Deedar Mirani of the Rawadari Tehreek and others.

However, several Muslim organisations called for a complete shutdown of the city. They claimed that Mahek converted to Islam voluntarily. She is now a Muslim and if she is sent back to her home they will not tolerate it. She should be sent back to her ''husband''. However, these organisations did not object to the court''s decision to send Mahek to the child protection home.

No human being should have to do these "jobs." Digusting.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has termed the Pakistani government's exclusion of members of the Ahmadiyya religious movement from a commission on safeguarding the rights of minorities "absurd", while sect leaders have warned it could lead to greater persecution of members resident in the South Asian country.

"The Ahmadis are among the most persecuted communities in Pakistan and to exclude them from a minority rights commission is absurd," said Brad Adams, Asia director at HRW, a US-based rights group, in a statement on Friday.

"Keeping Ahmadis off the commission shows the extent to which the community faces discrimination every day."

Earlier this week, the Pakistani government established the National Commission on Minorities (NCM), an interfaith body aimed at increasing religious tolerance and addressing issues of persecution in the country of 220 million people.

Pakistan is home to more than half a million Ahmadis, who have been declared "non-Muslim" under Pakistan's constitution since 1974 for their belief in the sect's founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, being a subordinate prophet to Islam's final prophet, Muhammad.

Members of the sect believe they are Muslim, and, as such, a community spokesperson told Al Jazeera they did not wish to be a part of the commission, but that dragging them into the argument had increased threats of violence.

"They never approached us or contacted us about this," said Saleemuddin, the spokesperson.

"We never requested this - our principled stand is the same as before and we will not join such a commission."

Saleemuddin said debate over the issue - an emotive subject for many in religiously conservative Pakistan - had resulted in greater threats to the Ahmadi community.

"What it does is put the community more in danger," he said.

"The campaign that has been launched after that, no one has spoken to the community and we have become even more vulnerable."

'They do not fall in the definition of minorities'

Members of the Ahmadiyya sect were initially part of the government's plans for the commission, but after the religious affairs ministry objected on April 15, their representation was removed.

On May 5, when announcing the official formation of the commission, Information Minister Shibli Faraz said Ahmadis were to be excluded because "they do not fall in the definition of minorities".

The back-and-forth on the issue prompted the religious affairs minister, Noor-ul-Haq Qadri, to accuse Ahmadis of not recognising the constitution, a charge community spokesperson Saleemuddin denied.

"The government's position is clear that it can only include a group or party in the country's constitutional bodies after that group recognises the constitution," Qadri said.

"Declaring your reservations or objections to a certain constitutional amendment, does that make you a traitor?" said Saleemuddin.

"The constitution gives me a right to believe myself to be whatever I am. If you have declared us non-Muslim for the purposes of law and constitution, fine, but I have the right to believe what I am myself."

Ahmadis routinely face widespread discrimination in Pakistan, with members of the sect denied service at shops or businesses if they identify themselves.

Specific provisions of Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws make it illegal for them to refer to themselves as Muslims, or to their places of worship and call to prayer by the equivalent Islamic terms. The country has also seen numerous targeted attacks against members of the community.

Saleemuddin warned that fiery debate over the issue on nationally aired television news channels risked inflaming tensions further.

"Day by day, life is becoming even more difficult for us," he said.

Odisha: 14-year-old Christian boy crushed to death with stone; body chopped into pieces

A14-year-old Christian boy was allegedly crushed to death with stone by a group of people in Odisha's Malkangiri.

The incident took place at Kenduguda village in Naxal-infested Malkangiri district of Odisha.

The minor's body was allegedly chopped into pieces by the accused and later they buried the body parts before fleeing from the spot.

Police sources said the killing was due to suspect of practising witchcraft.

On June 5, a missing complaint was filed in Malkangiri Police station by the victim's brother. The father of the victim had filed an FIR after his son went missing.

After receiving a complaint, Malkangiri Police SP Rishikesh Khillar said: "The police reached the spot and recovered the buried body".

As per the FIR, the victim and his family including his father had adopted Christianity three years ago. Since then, a few of the villagers have been harassing them.

The victim's family members alleged that few villagers identified as Deba Madkami, Budra Muchaki, Aaita Kabasi, Rabu Madi and others picked up the minor and his two other relatives on the pretext to attend a meeting in the jungle at 11.00 pm on June 4.

The accused attacked the victim and his relatives after reaching a deserted place. While the other two boys escaped, the victim was caught off guard and fell on the ground after a tussle.

The victim failed in his attempt to escape and was killed by the accused.

The accused later chopped his body into pieces and buried his body parts.

"On the intervening night of June 4, a few villagers of a group ganged up with a handful of religious fanatics, who were not a part of their village, and attempted to kidnap Christians," Pastor Kosha Mosaki of Kalimela said.

The police detained few suspects and said the "religious goons" later accepted their crime.

However, police sources said as many as 17 villagers died in Kenduguda village for an "unknown disease" in last three months.

"At least 22 cases of Christian Persecution have been reported in Odisha, including murder, were recorded in 2019. Eight cases including the latest incident have been recorded since January 2020 till date," Father Dibya said.

"In Malkangiri district, 14 religion-based killings of Christians in a span of 2 to 3 years. These statistics rank Odisha at number 10 among the list of hostile states towards Christians in India," Father Dibya said.

"Christians in this village have been facing many threats and are being continually harassed by religious fanatics," Pastor Kosha Mosaki said. "He was earlier attacked in February this year. I have made 4 complaints at the Malkangiri police Station regarding these attacks."

Was Peshawar’s Christian Man Murdered For Buying House In Muslim Neighbourhood?

A Christian man who was shot at by an armed neighbour in Peshawar following a minor brawl breathed his last on June 24, with questions raised whether the incident had religious basis.

Nadeem Joseph, his mother in law and son in law were fired at by his neighbor, identified as Suleman Khan in the neighborhood on June 2, with an FIR of the incident registered at a local police station.

In this video statement prior to his death, Joseph had said that he moved to a house that he bought a house in the TV Colony. “The person who lived in front of my house was an armed criminal who would call me to his house and treated me quite badly,” he said. “He would tell me how he had killed and tortured people.” Joseph added that the police seemed powerless to take action against the man wand would not take action against him.

Joseph further said he was videotaping the man, identified as Suleman Khan, on the day of the incident when he was brandishing his gun. “When they found out that I was videotaping them, then they tortured be and fired at me.”

Peshawar’s investigative reporter Lehaz Ali told Naya Daur that the issue was based on the motorcycle’s silencer, which created a lot of misunderstandings. He said that residents in the neighborhood had told Joseph’s son to not use the motorcycle without the silence due to the disturbance caused, but he continued to do so, eventually causing a fight. Ali added that neither the FIR of the brawl, registered a month ago, nor the initial statement by Joseph had any mention that he was targeted for being a member of a minority.

According to Joseph’s brother in law Yasir, the accused was beating Joseph’s son when they suddenly opened fire, injuring him. He denied that he had taken the silencer out from the bike or driving fast.

Joseph’s family sources said Suleman had asked Joseph on the day he moved to the neighborhood whether he was a Muslim. And, when told he was a Christian, was asked why he had bought a property in a Muslim dominated area. He continued to harass Joseph and, when Joseph asked him why he was doing so, he said he would find out soon.

Although it is not confirmed if it was a faith-based crime, but targeted attacks against religious minorities have turned into a norm in the country, requiring thorough investigation.

Joseph had also approached police for help, but to no avail. Following the incident, police arrested a number of family members of the accused who managed to flee from the scene.

According to Joseph’s wife who spoke to the media earlier at the hospital, they fear the attackers may also harm other family members. “They had themselves told us that they have killed people before,” she added.

Several people took to social media on Thursday, condemning and denouncing the act and urging the authorities to bring those responsible to justice.

Imran Khan needs to grow a spine and speak up against the forced conversion of Hindu women. But he will not! He is more concerned about Muslims living across the border.

There is massive religious discrimination in Pakistan: Hamza Ali Abbasi

Hamza Ali Abbasi has never been the one to mince words when it comes to speaking his mind. The actor has always spoken up on national and religious matters, and this time he talked about religious discrimination in Pakistan.
Hinting towards the current temple building issue, Hamza took to Twitter and shared his two cents.

"Pakistan is not an empire or a kingdom. We Muslims didn't conquer Pakistan. We are a Muslim majority nation and state," the Parwaaz Hai Junoon star wrote. "On 14th August 1947, everyone who resided in the boundary of Pakistan became an equal citizen."

He went on to add, "No more hypocrisy, I admit that there is massive religious discrimination in Pakistan."

This is not the first time Abbasi has been vocal about the rights of the minorities.

Earlier, Osman Khalid Butt explained why it is difficult for people to call out discrimination against religious minorities in Pakistan.

Butt shared he believed that speaking in favour of certain minorities may lead the majority to suffer the same fate as the oppressed. Thus, it is out of the fear of that backlash that many tend to stay quiet.

He wrote, "It is difficult for us to come to terms with and be vocal about the discrimination and apartheid of religious minorities in Pakistan - mostly because of fear. We fear the same persecution and ostracism they face almost on a daily basis."

He then added another reason why people fail to understand or even take into account the discrimination against these minorities. "Another reason is that little progress has been made to humanise them beyond statistics and their obvious 'otherness' - a prejudice that has passed on from generation to generation."

Butt concludes by addressing a thread he shared recalling the Lahore massacre of May 28. 2010 which occurred during the Friday prayers. The incident saw 94 people killed and more than 120 injured in simultaneous attacks against places of worship of a minority community.

Karachi’s Hindus homeless in their homeland

KARACHI: Once, the Hindu community of Meghwars were the resident mochis - shoemakers - of Karachi. They belong to the city as much as the city belongs to them.

But while their elders claim they have dwelt in the old city areas for over 200 years, few of them own a house - or any property - here. And it is not for lack of trying.

The Meghwars, locally called Maheshwaris, are the unfortunate victims of the age-old 'pagri' system, under which they have long rented houses. Now, being denied tenancy, allegedly on the basis of their religion, they are on the verge of homelessness.

With the pagri system, a landlord lets a 'tenant' use his property - forever in most cases - after receiving a "pagri," an amount that is a little less than the prevailing market price. In return, the tenant pays a nominal monthly rent and stays there for years on end without fear of eviction, while the property remains in landlord's name.

But here's the catch. The pagri system has no legal standing. With verbal commitments, neither landlord nor tenant can make a case for themselves if the other breaches the agreement.

As a result, the Meghwars, most of whom relied on the pagri system for housing, are in a fix.

According to several members of the community, barely a handful of Karachi's Meghwar families own a house in Lyari, where most of them live.

"Our people are unable to rent an apartment in any residential buildings here," the community's president, Kako Kanji, lamented, pointing to religious discrimination as the cause for this. "It's like we are being separated from the rest of society."

According to Mohan Lal, such discrimination against the community only emerged a couple of years ago. "Over the past few years, the hatred has become quite apparent."

Other community elders claimed that even builders asked about their religion before allotting apartments. As a result, they said, of around 100 Maheshwari families in the neighbourhood, only a few have managed to buy apartments, while most were denied rented accommodation even in newly constructed residential buildings.

"The owners are forcing us to vacate [the apartments rented on pagri]. It is a herculean task to find a place to live," explained Kanji.

With few options left, displaced families are moving in with others from the community, forcing two or three families to live together in a single cramped apartment, said Lal.

A lost profession

Being refused accommodation is not the only instance of discrimination against the Meghwars, nor the only attempt to erase their long-standing connection to the city's fabric.

According to Lal, society's hostility has also forced them to give up their ancestral profession of shoemaking. "And now the younger generation has lost interest in it. Most of us are reduced to being sanitary workers," he deplored.

Kanji Megji, another community elder, added, "There is no job left for us but that of sanitary workers."

Megji, who has seen the good, the bad and the ugly over the years, bitterly criticised the apathy of the elites. "We were staunch supporters of the Muslim League [at the time of the Partition] and have remained loyal to the Pakistan Peoples Party, but they only remember us during elections."

Babo Namori, who too belongs to the community, recalled the school his grandfather had built in Lyari. "Now its name has been changed and the plaque displaying his photo has been removed," he grieved.

He added that one of the oldest burial places for Hindus in the city's Mewa Shah Graveyard has been encroached too. "Only a small part of it is left for us. That too will be annexed soon," he predicted sadly.

Beaten down by persistent attempts to uproot them, Lal said their only hope for survival lay in permanently moving out of the old city areas. "But where should we go?"

Other community elders suggested that they be provided land in the city's outskirts. That way, society would get its wish of separating them, they added.

What they did not say, though, was that such a move would also take them far away from the place that has long been their home, where their roots lie deep.

^ So sad to hear what the hindus are going through there. But I think they can now apply Indian Citizenship with the new CAA act. Ofcourse it will not be good for us economically as we cant afford to take more people but morally it will be the correct step. This is exactly the reason why CAA act was designed...to help out these people.

Well said. We need to clean our own house first before we can even think of lecturing our neighbours (and other nations) on how to treat minorities.

Don't understand why we would lecture someone else without resolving our own issues first. Look at how we treat our minorities including Ahmedi's and resolve that issue before teaching India how to do it.

IK should talk less and do more.

Agree. Both the countries ill treated their minorities and would do good by fixing their own houses.

A lot of what IK says comes across as desperate attempts to catch attention.

Police arrest 4 men for destroying ancient Buddha statue found during construction in Mardan

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police on Saturday arrested four men for shattering an ancient Buddha statue found during construction work in the province's Takhtbhai area of Mardan.

Earlier today, videos surfaced on social media showing a man breaking with a hammer a life-sized statue of Buddha, parts of which were still embedded underground. Other men can be seen looking on as the statue is being destroyed while a couple of people were making videos.

Dr Abdul Samad, KP director archaeology and museums, termed the destruction of the statue a "crime" and said "disrespecting any religion is intolerable".

KP police later tweeted that the suspects had been traced and arrested while pieces of the broken statue were also recovered. According to the police, those arrested include Qamar Zaman, Amjad, Aleem and Suleman.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered against them under the Antiquities Act 2016, according to officials. Dr Samad expressed appreciation on the police's "prompt action" in arresting the suspects.

The director said that the statue belonged to the Gandhara civilisation and was approximately 1,700 years old. He added that the police had cordoned off the area.

200-year-old Gurdwara restored in Quetta

A 200-year-old Gurdwara has been handed over to the Sikh community in Quetta, allowing them to continue their religious practices.

After partition the ancient Gurdwara building was converted into a government school for girls.

"The historical Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha on Masjid Road in central Quetta has been restored after 73 years. The most famous and historic place of worship is around 200 years old and had been converted into a government school after partition," Provincial Parliamentary Secretary for Minority Affairs Dhanesh Kumar said.

The 14,000 square feet Gurdwara is worth billions of rupees but the government chose to hand it over to Sikh brothers instead of using the building for any other purpose, Kumar added.

The Students of Apwa Girls High School have been allowed to take admission in a nearby girls’ school so that re-converting the school into a Gurdwara does not inflict any harm to the education of students.

Earlier in February this year, the Balochistan government handed over a 200-year-old temple to the minority Hindu community in district Zhob.

Sardar Jasbeer Singh, chairman of the Sikh community in Balochistan, expressed happiness over the restoration of the Gurdwara, calling it a gift from the government to the Sikh community living in Balochistan.

"Sikh community of the province is very pleased that our ancient Gurdwara has been handed over to the Sikh community by the Government of Pakistan and the Balochistan High Court after 73 years and now we are able to continue our religious practice,” he said. “The Sikh community from all over Pakistan and the rest of the world appreciated this initiative.”

It is pertinent to note that there are about 2,000 Sikh families living in Quetta, Dera Bugti, Osta Muhammad and Pashtun areas of the province.

Even if they were arrested, that is no excuse for the destruction. I have not seen anybody punished for disrespecting other religions in Pakistan. Heck, we have the likes of Orya Maqbool on TV who spread hate against women and minorities every day!!

How much hate was there in 80's and 90's, vs now? If you were alive back then, you will see a significant improvement between then and now.

I have two questions regarding how the blasphemy law works in Pakistan.

Does blasphemy law apply only when it comes to acts against Islam or is it applicable to for religions? That’s the technical aspect. On ground, would the punishment for destroying a kuffar place of workshop or a statue attract the same levels of punishment as that by a similar vandalism against Islam?

Not directed to you in particular. Anyone could answer this.

He appears on Neo TV which is really not a two-bit channel. It does have sizeable following. Also, Mr Orya reaches hundred of thousands of his followers through social media.

According to my understanding, it is is only for those who blaspheme against Islam. I have not seen any anybody punished under the blasphemy law for vandalising temples, churches or forcibly converting Hindu girls.

I have not heard of anybody being punished, even lightly, for destroying places of worships of Hindus, Christians or Ahmedis. It is an open season in Pakistan to persecute minorities.

I was not alive back then. But, today, Pakistan has an alarming level of fundamentalism and extremism. I do not understand why is there so much hate in this country against women and minorities.

Its against all religions in theory. So if a Muslim destroys a Mandir he would get the same punishment as if someone destroyed a mosque. So in theory a blasphemy law is better for non Muslims, as it makes it illegal to say something against their religion while as the Muslims are already a majority no one in theory would say something against their religion.

However in reality the law has had so many additions its made life difficult for Ahmadis. They are not allowed to declare themselves as Muslim, they can face years in prison if they do. They cant build mosques, pray at mosques, even say salaam legally. They are by far the biggest victims of the law. And the only group facing persecution in Pakistan.

The law has also been used to settle scores, however this can apply to anyone including Muslims.

What needs to happen is that the law needs to be repealed and replaced with a new law that is similar to the one that the British originally had, and all the additions that the Pakistani government have inserted are removed.

why did the british bring a blasphemy law, was it to maintain peace between the warring hindus and muslims?

Christian site being opened for international tourism: Governor

LAHORE: Governor Punjab Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar has announced opening of the sacred Christian site Mariamabad for international tourism. While addressing a seminar in Governor House on National Minority Day, the governor said that we will introduce a quota for religious minorities in public-sector jobs.

Despite tension with India, Prime Minister Imran Khan has fulfilled his promise of completing the Kartarpur project and opened it for Sikhs from across the world including India, he said, adding: “Our government is ensuring the safety of minority’s rights in Pakistan.”

The governor said that we are protecting the rights of all religious minorities and providing them with religious freedom. Minorities enjoy equal rights and all facilities in Pakistan and we are striving to achieve the dream of progressive Pakistan, he added. He said that the world is a witness to the oppression and atrocities that minorities in India are facing today.

The Fascist Modi regime is targeting innocent Muslims in India as well as Kashmir. He said that the violence on Muslims and burning their homes is no less than terrorism.

What has Imran Khan and PTI done about the two days of anti-Shia protests in Karachi?

A racist is not breaking the law for holding racist views. He is only breaking the law of acts upon his racist views.

This is why right wing organisations are allowed to hold “peaceful” protests in the west.

If you want to be liberal than you have to be tolerant of other people’s views however abhorrent you may find them.

You're right here - thankfully we have real leaders like Jibran Nasir. Lets hope Imran Khan and Bilawal can both learn from him how to stand up for the ordinary Pakistani.

You can only count on Jibran Nasir to speak against and defy extremists instead of elected officials like Bilawal and Immy who despite having so much security refuse to condemn terror.

I still remember how Jibran protested against Mullah Burka while all the political leaders were shying away.

A racist is not breaking the law for holding racist views. He is only breaking the law of acts upon his racist views.

This is why right wing organisations are allowed to hold “peaceful” protests in the west.

If you want to be liberal than you have to be tolerant of other people’s views however abhorrent you may find them.

There is a difference between hate speech and holding racist views. Btw, protesters also pelted stones at a Shia place of worship.

I see the usual PTI cheerleaders aren't commenting on the topic of the anti-Shia marches in Karachi.

Can they accept that their selected leader, along with the PPP government of Sindh have completely failed here.

I’m a Shia from Karachi with many family members still living there...

I don’t blame the PTI for this. Why? Because I remember other atrocities carried out against the shia’s in Karachi and well before the PTI was even in government.

We know where the blame lies and this is another vomit inducing thread to show political biased just like the rape thread.

So the blame needs to go to PPP. Those people should have been arrested. And you cant arrest thousands of people for calling Shia Kaafir, but you can certainly arrest the leaders for incitement.

Blame PPP not PTI. If this was happening in KPK and Pujab, or Islamabad, then you can certainly blame PTI.
