Unreal from Yashasvi Jaiswal, he is actually telling them what Bazball is.

365 runs in 87.3 overs, 11 wickets. Has been an entertaining day.

After stumps on Day 1, Ravichandran Ashwin said:

"I think 240 is more than what we would've liked but to have someone going on and make 100 tomorrow will put us in the driving seat.

"Jaiswal has walked into Test cricket and taken to it like a fish to water. He has a lot of shots and it's serving him very well.

"I would say it went pretty well today."

India's spinners ripped through England before Yashasvi Jaiswal hammered debutant Tom Hartley as the hosts bossed a fast-moving day one of the first Test in Hyderabad.

England all out for 246 after electing to bat vs India, with eight wickets falling to spin and Ben Stokes (70 off 88) top-scoring; Tom Hartley then attacked as hosts close on 119-1 to trail by 127.

Indian slow bowlers Ravindra Jadeja (3-88), Ravichandran Ashwin (3-66) and Axar Patel (2-33) were expected to play a crucial role in this five-match series and they reduced England to 155-7 on a turning pitch before Ben Stokes' 70 from 88 balls, during which he was dropped on 43, propelled the tourists to 246 all out in 63.4 overs.

Hartley (0-63 from nine overs) contributed 23 from 24 balls from No 9 as he enjoyed his first experience of Test cricket but then had his left-arm spin battered after opening the bowling; thumped for six first ball by Jaiswal (76no off 70) en route to initial figures of 0-51 from six overs, shipping at least one boundary in each of those.

India closed on 119-1, trailing by 127, with Jaiswal pouncing on the loose deliveries offered up by Hartley, Jack Leach and Rehan Ahmed as England's spinners proved unable to offer the threat and consistency of the home side's trio earlier in the day.

Leach finally struck in the 13th over with the score on 80 - Rohit Sharma (24 off 27) skying to Stokes at mid-on - but Hartley's bid to have Shubman Gill (14no off 43) lbw early in his innings came in vain as England shredded all three of their DRS reviews inside 14 overs.

England had earlier suffered two wobbles with the bat, losing three wickets for five runs after a typically enterprising Bazball opening stand of 55 between Ben Duckett (35) and Zak Crawley (20), and then 4-34 once Jonny Bairstow (37) was bowled by a beauty from Axar following a 61-run alliance with Joe Root (29).

Stokes - who has shed a reported 10 kilograms since undergoing surgery on his left knee in late 2023 - revived his side, smoking three sixes and six fours after taking 53 balls to hit his first boundary, but India will be happier with the day with Jaiswal dishing out a dose of Bazball to England.

Hartley is (thus far) well down the list for worst economy rate on debut. With a cut-off of 50+ runs conceded, he's current tenth. The worst is Shahadat Hossain with 8.41 (12-0-101-0).

Good to see youngsters coming through nicely. Patidar made 150 against England A team other day. TOday Sarfraz has made 161 in 160 balls England A.

picking county second xi spinners vs india will result in this.

the eng selection has been absurd. liam dawson was the best spinner in the last county season but not picked. i think eng will pick 2 seamers from now on.

During this bazball experiment their biggest belief is they could win on any pitch with any group of bowlers with strategies. They showed a lot of arrogance by even declaring innings like they did in the first test instead of thinking about physical condition of their oldish bowlers. They think they can set some clever field and get any batsman out with any bowler. Sure their batting was going to work for a w hile until batsmen start running out of form. But expecting bowlers to back up their crazy scoring rate and short innings was too ambitious.

This is going to be a very boring one-sided series. All teams touring India should play only 2 Tests.

Good batting wicket. There is decent turn for spinners too. Fast bowlers can get some good bounce with the new ball.

England should have scored in excess of 400. Not an ideal start for them in this long series.

Poor and thoughtless batting from Eng here. Eng needed 400+ score in first inning.

Once the ball got older batting got easier. Not sure why they had to score a lot of runs in the first 25 or 30 overs.
It's just poor cricket. It can work on flat tracks or against poor bowling attacks but too risky against a good bowling sides on a decent track. They had to play the first 30 overs properly and then up the scoring. Or just play ball on merit. This is senseless. They threw away wickets due to their approach.

How fast you score is meaningless if you can't score even 250 runs.

Only on flat roads where pitch is a belter from ball 1 it makes sense as you need more overs to bowl out opposition. But on surfaces like this you have to pick your moments to attack. You need to have designated players to do the job.Naturally aggressive players like Botham, Kevin PIetersen have done the attacking job successfully in India.

Excellent day of Test cricket.

Glad to see a decent Test match after a while on Indian soil. I still didn't get why they opt for those lottery rank turners when we can easily demolish any side on wickets like these.

Contrast this with the utter disdain and dominance England showed against Pakistan in Pakistan. Levels between India and Pakistan in terms of Cricket intellect, quality. One good thing Zaka Ashraf did is to kick the paindu Babar on his backside.

I think Pakistan will give a much better fight to India in test matches played in India compared to England. Pak got better spinners and also better reverse swing bowlers with relatively old SG Balls compared to England team.

Let us not even go there. They got rolled over against England's trundler army on flat pitch. Heck even Jack leach picked 15 wickets in 3 tests.

England threw it away with their Bazball nonsense.

After the start they got, they should've milked the Indian bowlers and bat out the day.

India should win big now.

A tough end to the opening day of the first Test against India in Hyderabad did little to dampen English spirits with Ben Duckett describing a defiant innings from Ben Stokes as having the potential to be “matchwinning” in the final shake-up.

Stokes struck a calculated 70 with the tail in support to turn 155 for seven into 246 all out, allaying concerns overthe captain’s readiness for the tour after knee surgery last December. But given India closed on 119 for one, the tourists head into the second day with work to do.

Hartley endures tough bowling bow as India’s spin class shines through
Duckett, who earlier made 35, said: “Stokes gets it done whenever we need him. He’s the best in the world in those situations; the way he soaked up pressure early on, trusted his defence, then let loose when we were eight or nine down.”

“We were very happy being bowled out for what we got. Credit to Stokesy, that could be a matchwinning knock in a couple of days’ time.”

While Stokes was gimlet-eyed with the bat, patiently waiting 53 balls for his first boundary and then unleashing eight more from his final 35, his selection of only one seamer – Mark Wood – and tactics in the field raised some eyebrows.

As well as burning all three reviews, there was a persistence with Tom Hartley that saw the left-armer ship 63 runs from his first nine overs in Test cricket. Stokes also opted against bowling Joe Root, something that would have presented a different angle for the left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal, who went on to a belligerent 76 not out.

Jaiswal’s treatment of Hartley was particularly brutal, launching the 24-year-old’s first ball in Test cricket for six. Duckett, needless to say, supported Stokes’ decision and rallied round the newcomer, pointing to a late review for lbw against Shubman Gill that was projected to be going over the stumps by a whisker.

Duckett said: “Other captains might take you off after two overs and you’re then hiding away for the rest of the game. That’s Stokesy: he keeps bowling him and Tom nearly gets Shubman at the end. I’m not quite sure how that is going over the stumps, but he came back really well.”

“[Containment is] not something we look at. We look at taking wickets and being aggressive. We’ve shown that throughout the last two years.”

On his opening stand of 55 alongside Zak Crawley, one that was followed by the loss of three wickets in only 21 balls, Duckett added: “We’re very happy with how we started. We were always trying to be positive. Out here when you get the opportunity to have a bit of pace on the ball you go even harder.

“They bowled some really nice balls, I could have nicked off about 15 times, but I put the bad ball away.”

While the England team ended the opening day in an upbeat mood, there were complaints from travelling supporters among the 21,000-strong crowd. Tight security measures precluded water from being brought into the ground, with reports that bottled water was not available for sale and only water fountains with long queues were available.

This is all talk. Pakistan has proven nothing in test cricket for a while to prove they can cause any issues to India. The talk about Pakistan having better spinners and reverse swing bowlers is laughable because Pakistan's spinners and pacers were not able to prove any of this against Australia, England and New Zealand at home in Pakistan.

Even Shaheen has been exposed numerous times by India.

It seems they just picked Hartley because he is a left arm spinner and India have lot of righties in their batting line-up. But Jaiswal came as a surprise and he took apart Hartley in some style.

India clearly ahead in the game and England would need to bowl better to stop India from getting to 400 runs tomorrow.

You are correct. If Gill had opened that move would have even worked as he has this issue against left arm spinners

Hartley is pretty inexperienced and with the length he bowled, it won't trouble any batsman. These half trackers won't trouble any right hander. He will have to bowl better line and length tomorrow like his experienced fellowmen, Jack Leach, then he will get better output.

Can't see England challenging India much, unless they change their approach.

They need to grind the bowlers out like they did during 2012 series (which they won).

Spin ball is about confidence. Imagine Gill trying to defend first pitched up ball and missing compared to getting his first international ball whacked for six. Jaiswal totally ruined him in one over.

Only watched live till tea break as it was well past midnight my time.

Saw the highlights, and some scintillating batting by young Jaiswal (augurs well for the future of our batting lineup).

Our batters need to spend as much time as possible at the crease to make the pitch more deteriorating before we can have English batters for their 2nd innings. Anything less than 400 runs in the 1st dig would be a disappointing total (after such a frolicking start, we had).

Also hoping/waiting for Ash to get past the 500-wicket milestone soon.

Who are these better spinners?
All seem mediocre, they are good at bowling either half trackers or full tosses. None of them can trouble Indian batsmen.

English spinners were terrible.

Jaiswal was class but these guys were bowling pure rubbish with no control.

As per Ashwin once the moisture dried out spinners didn't get much out of the pitch. England should have batted all day in order to exploit tomorrow's early morning moisture.
