Younis Khan: A better Test batsman than Rahul Dravid?

I rate Waugh higher than Kallis
 
These are the highest average ever achieved by them after a decent sample size

Sachin - 58.87 after 90 tests

Dravid - 58.75 after 104 tests

Kallis - 58.20 after 111 tests

Ponting - 59.99 after 107 tests

Lara - 60.96 after 31 tests

Waugh - 51.87 after 139 tests

Yeah. him too. With his talent though should have averaged more and hit a few more 100s. His stats are pretty even. Done decently everywhere. Lowest is England with 34.5 and then Pakistan with 37.5. Others are all 40. Many of the other names have some averages in the 20s in some countries. But then again he doesn't have the insane 60-70 averages anywhere. Highest is 51.6 at home.

I rate him very highly. He was not a prolific run scorer and underachieved, but very few batsmen have scored so many "tough" runs as him. Always brought his best against the best of oppositions of his era and was an incredibly clutch batsman. Sometimes you have to look beyond stats. I will comfortably have him in my best ever Asian team in Tests.
 
Its fair to say that in the last 25 years, Sachin,Lara,Ponting,Dravid and Kallis are best five batsmen to have come in longer format with Sanga as next best.

In odis, Sachin, Ponting,Lara, AB and Kohli are best five batters of last 25 years.

You think Kohli/Rahane can push him out of the all time Indian XI provided they live up to potential?
 
Miandad is an ATG.

Won't hear any argument arguing otherwise.

The problem with VVS was inconsistency. He would play an unbelievable inning in on match and will then go missing in the next 2. That's why he did not average as high as Tendulkar or Dravid.

Yup, he was never a prolific run scorer.

But he performed a bit better than even SRT and Dravid against some tough oppositions, notably the ATG Aussies. He would be often described as a thorn in the flesh of the Aussies by media then.

But unfortunately he wasn't as consistent as them. Also regressed with age massively.

Also, did not he play a lot of games as a top order batsman initially which ruined his numbers?

I think he was most suited at #5. Had he batted more at that position, he would have averaged higher.

Yah, he has played around 40 tests in the upper order (top 3).

Inzy, Moyo, Younis, Sehwag, Mahela are all same level. Dravid, SRT, Gavaskar are ATGs. Sanga, Miandad a level between?

Inzy - 44.18
Younis - 38.61
MoYo - 44.11
Misbah - 38.03

What is worrying about Pakistan is that after these guys not a single good Pakistani batsman has debuted. Ali/Shafiq are decent but they are not at the YK/MoYo level (50 overall, 40 outside Asia) forget ATG level.

Outside Asia their averages are
Ali - 29
Shafiq - 27

In comparison
Kohli - 48.3
Rahane - 52.13

Shafiq averages 24. I had excluded Zimbabwe but Shafiq has done poorly against them too, only 14 average. Azhar averages 29 in Zim so it's the same either way.

Ganguly > Lara in ODIs. There are 'many' better players than Lara in ODIs, he was nothing extra ordinary in limited overs cricket. That's why Sachin is regarded as complete batsman. I can go a step further and say Jayasuriya > Lara in ODIs. Bowlers feared Sanath.

Ganguly has daddy 100s in ODIs, like 180+, only recently Amla and Kohli started to surpass him in terms of fastest to 6000, 7000 etc. You get my drift.

Sehwag is so overrated. He was hopeless during 0-8 phainta, whilst Dravid batted like a champ vs Jimmy/Barbie.

Lara was the #1 ranked ODI batsman for a large part of the 90s.

Actually Lara had insane peak in 90s and was no.1 for back to back 3-4 years in mid 90s but in early 2000s he fell badly in odis while stayed good in tests.

Ganguly was a bit similar and was competing with Sachin in early 2000s in odis but he too fell during later period.

I feel I should rather go with MSD/Bevan over Lara and even Gilly has a case to replace Lara .
 
Lara opened the batting and had lots of success but he went down to 3 and then 4, where really he should have opened the batting like Tendulkar to take advantage of the rule changes.

I didnt watch YK in tests but in odis Dravid for sure looks better even though both are having strike rate in 70s.
 
Dravid. We dont have to look too far beyond the series in England in 2011 in swinging conditions when Anderson and Broad was ripping through the whole Indian batting.

I mean can you imagine Younis scoring four hundreds in four matches in those conditions. At most he might have hit one hundred after dancing and jumping his way to first 30 runs and then settling down.

However, we have to respect the mental strength Younis possessed and the way he fighted out against quality pace bowling all his career.

Dravid tackled prime Anderson, and Anderson had made Tendulkar his bunny. Dravid isn't compared to Tendulkar in tests for no reason.

YK is a great test player but Dravid was much better.

I know that Dravid is wayyy better than Younis. It's just that some of our friends here think that Younis is an ATG and better than Dravid.
 
No need to put down YK he was a great player and did well for his team.. Dravid was a better player no doubt but YK was good in his own regards..

Dravid averages 28 in south africa, less than 40 in aus. (most runs came without warne & mcgrath).Avg of just 7 against mcgrath & around 20's against warne. Poor in srilanka too against murli. He was just good against medium pace swing bowler & avg against genuine pacers.

Sachin might be andreson bunny but he has avg of 50+ in england and has proved himself in every country.
 
Dravid was marginally better in Tests, as his highest ICC rating would suggest 892 compared to YK 880, but he was not better everywhere and in every respect. YK scored centuries more frequently than Dravid over his career, performed better in some countries, was better against spin and more reliable in the 4th innings. He also did not suffer the extended slump that affected Dravid between 2007-2010, sustaining a remarkable consistency until the end. The comparison is a fair one. In so far as many would claim Dravid as ATG without hesitation, it is difficult to see, based on objective criteria, how YK could not also be considered as such. No dispute in ODIs and T20, though YK did win some silverware.

If we are to cherry pick stats like this, then Younis averages a mighty 3.50 against McGrath and Warne in UAE.

Younis khan averages less than 40 and dravid averages 53 outside asia and some delusional ppers think younis was the better test batsman :)))

Don't know where you got those stats from. Dravid averages 41 in Aus. And 31 in matches involving Mcgrath/Warne, which is not amazing, but decent considering Sachin too averaged only 37.

Stats can be cherry picked like this all the time.
