Very good debut, but he was still unknown before this match, with a bit unique action. I don't think Aussies were expecting him play in this match. This was a lesser pressure game, but his real teat will come in active rubbers, when teams have good amount of footage of his game.
In any sports, particularly in cricket role model, public interest, culture & mentoring is extremely important. There is an unique similarities between Pakistan & Indian cricket in this regard. Since Counties stopped picking PAK players, in last 20 years there are several PAK young batsmen starting career with a bang, but almost all of them (actually apart from YK) faded away in couple of years without proper guidance, culture, not having a proper (or having a wrong) mentor. Starting from Salim Elahi to Sami Aslam, almost same story. Their predecessors were lucky that English cricket had the money & passion in 70s & 80s.
Similar issues with IND, though IND was never dependent on external resources to nurture their cricketers, but media sold Tendulkar better & bigger than Kapil & last 25 years I have seen many Indian pacer starting career with potential, but within couple of years time most of them (apart from Srinath & Zak) ended like Pathan, BK, Umesh, Munaf, Nehra, RP Singh, Sreeshant, BRB Singh & I can name few more - I think Shami is heading towards the same route.
And general public opinion isn't helping either - after losing by 10 wickets inside 16 overs, still mass Pakistanis believe there are Wasims & Waquars in streets of Lahore, Pindi & selectors are not picking them, while chasing run a ball 80 with 2 set batsmen in, after losing for 9/52, still majority Indian believes modern Brandmans & Hammonds are coming from Bombay, Delhi & Madras (& the bowlers are ..................). Something has to change if Babar Azam in to convert in to Zaheer Aabbas or Jasprit Bumrah in to Javagal Srinath.
