What's new

Zimbabwe (118/9) level T20I series with a 19 run win against Pakistan (99)

Truth is, Zimbawe should have won the last game too. Its their minnow mentality that costed the game.

Absolutely, they repeatedly lose their nerve in crunch situations so they throw away so many matches from winning positions.

If only Ballance, the Curran brothers and de Grandhomme stuck around - they could easily have been SL/WI/BAN level.

Pitch was proper crap, but still no excuse chasing 120.

All it needed was sesnsible cricket

Ironic that Rizwan haters are saying fatty could have done much better.

Could fatty have won us a run chase in New Zeland when he couldn't even attack tier 3 PSL bowlers on NSK belters, could fatty have helped us chase 200 against SA - the same SA which he scored 8 off 12 with 10 dots, could fatty have batted 20 overs and prevented us from losing a series against Zimbabwe in the first 2 games. I really do doubt it but hey these are the same people that think Pakistan has the talent to export its players to the IPL or Babar is a greater batsmen than Kohli, so i must be wrong :(

It happened in 2016 as well vs Ind. Not sure how people still get surprised by such upsets. :smith

Have you seen the team that India fielded in that series. It was a young Indian team led of Dhoni which didn't feature Kohli, Rohit and other big names. They were using the series to test their bench strength. But India still won the series. But here Pakistan is playing their best team except for Shaheen.

No Hassan, Shaheen and Nawaz. Though I get your point but, thing is even the main players of Pak arent that much experienced if you compare them to Indian at that time. Hafeez is the only one with a lot of matches otherwise you can see the overall matches under Pak belt.

This is a proper thrashing by Zimbabwe. As Pakistan got bowled out below 100 chasing 119.

And this Zimbabwe team also didn't have their many players like sikandar,Sean Williams,Craig ervine

Only dhoni Had experience in that team and many of them had not played more than 5 matches at international level

Really gutted for Zimbabwe regarding the first match as they rightly should have been 2-0 and winning the series. Well played Zimbabwe, I am sure Mugabe must be proud in his grave and everyone else.
Pakistan were pathetic and need to bury their heads in sand. Spineless performance.

India also drew ODI against Afg. Ireland just recently beaten Eng by 7 wickets chasing over 300. Pathetic performance but, lets not act like this is the first upset in cricket history.

Akhtar probably the most happy Pakistani right now as the views for his match video hit the roof

Babar Azam speaking after loss:

"I feel we played poor cricket today as a batting group - but I have to give credit to the Zimbabwe side for such a good comeback"

"Our middle-order is struggling but we have to step up and I am confident that we will comeback in the next game"

"Wicket was a little double-paced but that is no excuse as we are a professional team"

True but England are World Champions and India are always right up there, Pakistan is not a team which has been setting the world on fire, they will be badly exposed in the WT20

Beyond pathetic, shocked at the folk defending this humiliating defeat

Under Mickey we won tri series involving Australia too. Now Misbah is back with his curse of us losing to pathetic teams. What players and team are being selected. Damn you Babar too. Spineless captain.

Was the best bowler in the third ODI vs SA and won two man of the match awards in 7 T20 matches against SA recently.

Not saying he is a legend but, a player in form.

But one expects a close match even if it is a upset which was not seen in this match and main point is that this was not even best team of Zimbabwe their best 3 players were not part of the team.

No excuses. T20 is a format where there is more opportunity for upsets, I dont think anyone can argue that. It was poor performance by Pak but, such things and uncertainties are part of cricket or any other sport and are not that uncommon as well.

To be honest, a defeat like this was always on the cards looking at the way Pak has struggled against a handicapped South Africa (home and away) and in the first game in this very series.

This isn't really a "one-off" or an "upset" per say.

The point here is this doesn't feel like an upset. It looks like a closely contested series between two equal sides. Whereas the above matches you mentioned were upsets including scotland scoring 360+ against england n wining an ODI match.

Talat, Iftikhar, Khushdil, Asif, Danish - what can you say.

In their 16th attempt, Zimbabwe recorded their first ever T20I win against Pakistan when they defeated the visitors by 19 runs in the second T20I on Friday.

Pakistan were outclassed by a brilliant bowling performance by Zimbabwe, who defended the lowest total of 118 at the Harare Sports Club to set up the series for the decider.

The hosts were asked to bat and with the return of Brendan Taylor captaining the side in the absence of Sean Williams, who missed out due to an injury. The hosts' conservative approach in the powerplay resulted in Taylor (5) being forced to play a rash shot, losing his wicket to Faheem Ashraf.

Zimbabwe managed 25/1 in the first six overs with Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Tadiwanashe Marumani at the crease. The debutant Arshad Iqbal struck with the second breakthrough for Pakistan as he snared his maiden international wicket dismissing Marumani for 13.

Thereafter, Kamunhukamwe’s modus operandi of prudent batting didn’t help Zimbabwe’s cause as he failed to capitalize on his slow start. He became Danish Aziz’s victim – out caught for 34 runs in 40 balls.

The Pakistani bowlers had taken charge of the game from ball one and looked in complete control. Late in the innings, Regis Chakabva (18) and Tarisai Musakanda (13) fought fire with fire but were not able to last for long.

What looked like a comfortable total to chase down, Pakistan was crippled with the early loss of the in-form Mohammad Rizwan (13) and Fakhar Zaman (2) and were reduced to 37/2 in 7.5 overs.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez then attempted to revive the chase. Hafeez’s lack of runs since his return to the side continued as managed to score just five runs in 10 deliveries.

Babar played a sensible hand of 41 off 45 balls but lack of support from the other end forced him to succumb under rising pressure.

Zimbabwe bowlers rattled the Pakistani middle-order causing a big collapse. From 78/3 in the 16th over, Pakistan were bundled out for 99.

Luke Jongwe starred with the ball for Zimbabwe with his best T20I bowling figures of 4/18 that included the prized wickets of Babar and Rizwan.

The series will be decided on Sunday, 25 April at the same venue.

I find it funny how people are blaming Misbah for defeat. You don't need any special coach to chase 120 in T20.
It would have been okay if target was ~140, because T20 is unpredictable format but no excuse for getting all out under 100.

True but England are World Champions and India are always right up there, Pakistan is not a team which has been setting the world on fire, they will be badly exposed in the WT20

They will be the cornered tigers of the tournament.

So i was sitting , waiting for iftar and out of curiosity I checked the cricinfo scorecard ( i was expecting an easy win so I actually had forgotten that they were playing). I had to check twice to confirm if Pakistan has indeed lost the match chasing 120 odd. This epitomises how mediocre is the cricket setup is. The selection committee has some serious answers to give. I think misbah should show some shame and resign . This is the most pathetic staff since intikhab alam .

Blame the pitch and boundaries

There's no way that was an intl quality pitch for limited overs horrible.nasty pitch

But either way our batsmen made a hash of it and couldn't deal with the Zimbabweans banging in short of a length, running and placement was poor from our batsmen , burl was excellent with the ball.

Middle order is finished I've seen enough to say asif ali and danish aziz are not intl quality

And hafeez just needs to retire he is 40 yrs old .

You have to play sharjeel , haider and fakhar at the top with babar rizwan coming lower down they are being very selfish and have wasted the power plays in these last 2 t20i.

My memories are going back to 1999 World cup match against Bangladesh
2007 world cup match against Ireland.
This is yet another addition to some massive failures against minnows.

Yeah demote the guys who actually performs, bravo :14::14::14:

The problem is hafeez and faheem who looked world beaters in batting in previous series look like tail enders which is worrying

Did the decision to send Mohammad Hasnain after Usman Qadir and Haris Rauf cost Pakistan the match?

Pakistan management committed the same mistake in the 2nd odi against SA, where Rauf was sent ahead of Hasnain.

Hasnain is clearly a better batsman than Rauf. His batting abilities are being wasted by the clueless management.

I think forget that what Pakistan need to ask themselves is that why couldn't you rotate the strike and why did you waste balls??? This was Zimbabwe after all and you needed Babar there to hold your hand?? Pakistan should be expected to thrash these games with newbies and without the presence of seniors.

The players need to ask themselves about the shots they played before anything.

Utter shambles.

We have Rizwan and Babar as the only batsmen of stature, the rest are either useless or once in a blue moon batsmen.

Well unfortunately nothing can be done about how certain individuals or group of people feel.

Considering the recent white ball performances of Pak, inconsistencies are there but the results have been decent (Mid tier kind, where they belong) so as per facts, ranking and stats it will count as an upset by any definition. However, again how any individual or group of people feel without much to back that feeling is something which cant be controlled. A 12th ranked team beating a 4th ranked team will count as an upset in any sport but, again it is not that uncommon a thing.

Congrats Zimbabwe. Despite lack of cricket they are able to put together a decent performance once in a w hile. I remember once they restricted Windies to 79 in 20 overs.

Terrible batting performance.

Low cricketing IQ from top to bottom compounded by the slow pitch.

Should have walked to the target without trouble. Again our poor batting has been exposed. Where is the talent we keep hearing about?
