“Players will be free to play in the IPL – it will be player choice": NZC CE David White on Pak tour
New Zealand Cricket boss David White is confident about safety and player commitments for the two upcoming tours of Pakistan by the Black Caps.
The NZ men’s side will play two tests and three ODIs against the hosts in December and January and return in April and May for five ODIs and five Twenty20 games.
The Black Caps aborted their tour to Pakistan last year just hours before the first ODI in Rawalpindi because of an undisclosed security concern.
Ramiz Raja, the PCB chairman, said at the time it was “frustrating” to see the Black Caps walking out of the tour by taking a unilateral approach and not sharing the security threat with Pakistan.
White, the NZ Cricket chief executive, said he was pleased with the preparation already made for the tours, while Australia and England have recently toured Pakistan.
“We sent over a reconnaissance team of four people, they went to all the venues, all the hotels etc,” White said.
“And they worked very closely with the Pakistan authorities, Pakistan cricket and embassies and the like over there. We’ve also obviously been talking regularly with the New Zealand government, so we’re proceeding with the tour and looking forward to it.
“The post-Christmas tour is part of the test championship and qualification for the Cricket World Cup, while April is the make-up for the previous tour.”
White is confident the Black Caps will field a full-strength side for the first tour, with no indication players aren’t keen to tour Pakistan.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson may be one of a string of first-choice players who opt to play in the IPL instead of against Pakistan in April-May.
“That’s our understanding to date.
“I’ve had no other discussions with players [on that topic] – Heath [NZ Cricket Players’ Association chief Heath Mills] and I have been regularly updating the players, so at this stage that appears to be the situation.”
The two test matches will be played at Karachi from December 27-31 and Multan from January 4-8. Karachi will also host the three one-day internationals from January 11-15 as part of the ICC World Cup Super League.
However, the Black Caps – and the hosts – are likely to be well short of their First XIs for the five T20s and five ODIs in April and May as they clash with the Indian Premier League.
“Players will be free to play in the IPL – it will be player choice,” White said.
The initial tour will be the first time the Black Caps have been playing away from New Zealand or Australia at Christmas/New Year since their 2012-2013 tour of South Africa.
