I know this is a bit random but was it ever established who was actually involved?

I know Malik, Yousaf and Inzi orchestrated it.

But who were the others? I remember hearing about Rana, Ajmal and maybe Amir but there were suppose to have been 7-8 active players at the time who were involved, none of whom were punished.

Kudos to Younis Khan for moving on and not slinging mud by holding grudges or spilling names.

Pakistan never deserved a captain like Younus Khan.

The oath taking brigade just summed it up.

I never got to know all the details behind this.. would be great if people could elaborate on this.

Kudos to him for putting it behind and focusing on the team and cricket bcz i think many of us myself included could not have let bygones be bygones.

how wss inzy involved? He retired in 2007

Happened at his house apparently.

He was the one that orchestrated it according to reports at the time, as he had Yousaf's ear at the time.

The main reason I created this thread was to try and establish who the main "players" were.

5 years ago, not sure why being discussed now. All allegations out of the mouth of Inti Alam anyways, who has been known to spout crap regularly.

My God!

This is just, disgraceful!

No wonder our team is so pathetic when it comes to being a team. We have extremely selfish, down-right deluded seniors who constantly push for gaining more and more power, instead of directing those energies at the field!

This, my friends, is the seniority culture which recently-retired players understand so well (not that they work to diminish it or anything)! Most of the players from the late 90s/early 2000s have left a terrible legacy in this aspect - one which youngsters at that time (Afridi, Moyo, Malik etc) had internalised and then practised themselves when they became seniors.

Shameful, shameful stuff!

from what I remember the names were Yousuf, Rana, Misbah, Afridi and Malik.

but it all seemed like paper rubbish, nothing substantial.

Are the names unfounded or the actual event itself?

I don't remember Misbah's name being brought up. Nor Amir either as the OP mentioned.

Only names I remember being brought up were Malik and Rana. And ofcourse Yousuf and Younis (not sure if Yousuf was a victim or the perpetrator here)

Rana even admit to underperforming in that single T20 game in 2009/2010 in MCG as I recall. Basically played out an over of dot balls almost when we were in a winning position.

Misbah, Amir, Inzi were never mentioned as far as I recall.

One of the players named in the report, Rana Naved, admitted that it happened and that he was involved, for which he apologized to YK.

From what I recall, it was Yousuf, Malik, Afridi, Rana and Inzamam.

All against YK?

I thought the Malik and Rana episode was against Yousuf?

If the Inzi thing is true then that's the very reason he should be nowhere near the current team set up in any capacity. I don't care how good he was.

Yeap remember that. Lost all respect for the guy after that.

Rana Naveed admitted it, then shortly after was dropped from the team. He said Afridi, Yousuf, Malik, Akmal etc were all involved.

Kudos to Younis Khan because I for one would just quit that team.

afridi , rana and ajmal were there too..it happened at inzi's house.

ajmal name was mentioned by aqib javed in an interview once. He was our bowling at that time.

Do you actually have any evidence that Malik was one of the guys who orchestrated it.

I find it bewildering as to why he is considered to be one of the main guys behind this (and takes total flack from some!) when everyone knows him and Yousuf never liked each other.

Depends what you consider proof.

During the inquiry the only thing all parties agreed upon was Malik.

not really, yousuf was though to orchestrate.
of course for some fans, the lesser talented player can seem link the true villain because its more convenient to vilify.

Possibly.

No doubt Yousaf was at the forefront but the other main culprits Afridi etc.. all pointed to Malik. He was the only constant in all their stories.

Malik is a very clever guy overall. He could've used his brains for good when he was made captain but decided to do dumb stuff instead.

All the brigade should have been banned , it destroyed pakistan cricket and later match fixing. Pakistan cricket got boring after that and lost all its flair.

People praising Younis for moving but still discussing it here. It was a sorry episode and is very vague so lets not gossip about who was or wasn't involved since it never came out.

Yousuf and Younis were banned for a year each, Rana and Malik were also handed bans after that awful tour to Australia.

only thing that I believe was confirmed was that Malik was involved for sure. The rest is all unsubstantiated he said she said stuff. From what was gleaned Yusuf was roped in because he was upset he got dropped for the second ODI against NZ for no reason. Some others found YK to be rude and a bad man manager who would make decisions without informing some players why hew as doing so.

the aussie tour actually highlighted the real culprits and some major fixers if you ask me. It all eventually lead to 2010. The appointment of moyo as captain. His public humiliation by the very same players who roped him into the so called oath plot, and then the subsequent banning of our two best players which lead to afridi and then butt becoming captains. In all this the malik mafia were front and centre (kami, misbah, malik and butt). who can forget that run out by butt on moyo and the stare that followed it?

^ Arey bhai, what proof is there that Misbah was involved in this? Misbah was awful back then and was much more concerned about his own performance than any conspiracy, no doubt.

Absolutely, lets bury our heads in the sand and act like it never happened. Let's do the same for the match-fixing scenario too. So we can act all shocked when history repeats itself and PP is filled with threads vilifying a player.

Let's not forget the abuse Younis received on Pakpassion by a large number of posters. Names such as IQuit and Useless Khan. For 12-18 months Younis endured a torrid assassination of his character by the media and on Pakpassion.

The Malik and Afridi brigade were celebrating as if it was Eid during this time because they only cared about one thing, that their man was in with a chance of becoming captain, to hell with what's right and wrong. Yet when it was revealed that these events laid the foundations of the match-fixing scandal the media and the posters on here seem to have developed a selective amnesia.

So if and when Misbah is disposed we can all act shocked and start his character assassination threads, because all shall be forgotten.

Wasn't the source for this Mazhar Majheed?

Misbah brought into discussion? He wasn't even in the 7 names that media brought up.

From his brother Azhar Majeed.. Man the arguments a couple of us had with him during that time!

A lot agreed with him before the scandal broke, if you remember.

He tried painting himself as an innocent victim of his brother's actions afterwards.

Yes they did. I think a lot of people were taken in by him.

I remember the year of 2009 very well.

The reason the oat-taking matter became public because Malik was one of members of its, revealed to Aqib Javed and later, this became public.

It was during the second Test, Sydney 2009; as Pakistan ended up losing from winning position and then the news of oat-taking matter has got Mohammad Yousuf worked up, and ended up badnaming Shoaib Malik right away, to the extent that he blamed on Shoaib Malik for losing Sydney Test.

Then, Shoaib Malik threatened to reveal his dirty plan in 24 hours as Yousuf was continuosly badnaming Shoaib Malik after Shoaib Malik betrayed oat-taking group [for revealing it to Aqib Javed and later, this became public]. But Ijaz Ahmed stopped Shoaib Malik from airing his dirty secret. Ever since, Mohammad Yousuf never said a single bad word against Shoaib Malik.

Shoaib Malik was one of those players, but only to betray it. But why he did?

The oat-taking program started during Malik captaincy. Younus Khan was aware of it but never revealed this to public or anyone close to PCB.

This led to undermine Malik captaincy and Pakistan lost ODI series in 2007 to Sri Lanka. Younus Khan became captain. Some people might say that Younus Khan was the next in line for captaincy, therefore he didn't say anything. [he did reveal about this matter in next year in some interview, and also, clarified that Shoaib Malik wasn't involved behind the undermining of Younus khan's captaincy either after the truth came out].

So, this may sound like Shoaib Malik was saint for revealing this to Aqib Javed, but in reality, he might have taken taken his revenge for what happened to him, Allahu Alim.

Most importantly, never ever trust Intikhab alam. He complained about Malik being aloop; not being vocal, but then complained about Afridi for being too much vocal. That guy is crazy, and problematic who should have been ousted a long time ago

At the end, Allah knows best.

Overall, only two players are innocents; Shoaib Malik and Younus Khan. Both are the victim of oat-taking scheme; but the rest were guilty. Sometimes i wonder if Younus Khan had revealed it to public during Shoaib Malik captaincy, then Pakistan cricket would have been spared for 2009 as well as 2010, Allahu Alim.

very well said. i cant understand why everyone seems so convinced that malik was a political instigator. all his problems started when the captaincy was forced upon him and yousuf was dropped by the selectors for their t20 side. ever since then, when he was an excellent prospect for pakistan, he has been destroyed and vilified by every quarter with no evidence that i can see that holds any weight.

inti is a cancer - how anyone can put stock into his words when he was trying his best to save his own backside after coaching that disastrous tour is beyond me. passing the buck and blaming other people seemed to work, hes started his 500th decade at the pcb, and all the others are all but gone.

Yousuf and Younis were banned for a year each, Rana and Malik were also handed bans after that awful tour to Australia.

But Yousuf came back later that year for the tour in England, didn't he? And that was only seven or eight months later if I recall.

In hindsight, he seems the most destructive player in the Pakistani dressing room. Confirmed by the statements that he makes (and are reported here) every night during game days.

Yousuf and Younis were banned for a year each, Rana and Malik were also handed bans after that awful tour to Australia.

As it sounds younis was the victim .. it is beyond me why he was banned. The other guys should have been banned for 5 years.

You have constantly been a Malik apologist since you joined the forum.

Malik may not have been the main protagonist but to suggest he was an innocent victim is to stretch the limits of credibility.

I love the way your trying to allude that actually Younis himself was guilty and the mastermind of his own downfall and that the only true victim was Malik.

We shouldn't take Intikab's word, nor Yousaf nor Afridi's as they are all tainted witnesses but we should accept Malik's word for it?

Considering Malik had his ban overturned instantly, as a wedding gift and continued to be selected for 4 years without performing once, how exactly is he a victim?

You keep mentioning reference to the All Mighty but wash over the fact that Malik and the others took an oath on the Holy Quran over such a duplicitous act. A shameful act in the eyes of any Muslim.

I wonder how many of these players are willing to take an oath on the Quran that they will give their 100% effort each time they go on to the pitch wearing the green cap? Doubt many would because that would mean some other captain would be given credit and that sums up exactly the type of people we are dealing with.

You have constantly been a Malik apologist since you joined the forum.

I, Malik, became a Malik apologist after what happened to him. [late 2009 and afterward].

During that time, I and Insaaniyat were rooting for Younus who took over, and Younus lost our support due to fishing. Then we switched to Afridi, who decided to quit in his first Test under his captaincy, therefore lost our support. Then, our support switched to Salman Butt who took captaincy to lead from vulnerable position, as usual he got what others got. :jf

Anyhow, i was more fan of Misbah because of his WC T20 2007, was a member of at one site where i had a avator of both Misbah and Inzimam walking together. Although, i wasn't member of PP back then.

Malik may not have been the main protagonist but to suggest he was an innocent victim is to stretch the limits of credibility.

If you compare Malik of 2003 to 2007 and 2007 to 2010, then you would notice the different.
He was innocent and still is, whose crime only that he accepted the captaincy offered by PCB only to be ridiculed by the nation just because his captaincy policy didn't sit with certain cricketers who had huge fan-base. Then, his captaincy was undermined consistently, to the extent that he was forced to resign whilst Younus and the whole team was celebrating over his resignation from captaincy.

He was weak, unliked, unpopular and nobody. He was easier target. Knowing the credibility of media, he was vilified, accused with no evident, yet the whole nation believed them [because of their hatred over Malik] as opposed to not believe on media regarding the allegation over ISI and Pakistani army.

I love the way your trying to allude that actually Younis himself was guilty and the mastermind of his own downfall and that the only true victim was Malik.

Younus knew the oath-taking gate that was against Shoaib Malik, but Younus didn't reveal it to public, and then, replaced him as a captain.

Shoaib Malik knew the oath-taking gate, but next day, he revealed it to Aqib Javed and this became public news, followed by outburst of Mohammad Yousuf towards Shoaib Malik.

I cannot say that for myself. But Aqib Javed did, and that's how oath-taking gate became public news. All credit goes to Shoaib Malik.

Considering Malik had his ban overturned instantly, as a wedding gift and continued to be selected for 4 years without performing once, how exactly is he a victim?

He was a victim for what happened. No one is talking about performance, wedding gift, 4 years with his dry runs.

We are talking about Oath-taking incident.

You keep mentioning reference to the All Mighty but wash over the fact that Malik and the others took an oath on the Holy Quran over such a duplicitous act. A shameful act in the eyes of any Muslim.

Regarding taking an oath on Holy Qur'an is still unclear, as that might seem exxagerated. No one take oath on Holy Qur'an, as it is unholy, knowing the architector with his religious background, which i find it hard to believe that he would go for this. The media can exxagerate sometimes. At the end, Allah knows best.

Nevertheless, the fact is that you are accusing Shoaib Malik for taking an oath-taking whilst ignoring the fact that if he hasn't joined the group, he wouldn't be able to reveal oat-taking incident to Aqib Javed.

He cannot be accused of joining the group if his only purpose of joining the group only to expose it to public instead of playing the game, dumb like Younus Khan did during Shoaib Malik's captaincy whereas Younus Khan should have told this incident to anyone in PCB or media.

Oath-taking against Younus became public because Shoaib Malik didn't stay silent. Oath-taking against Shoaib Malik was unheard because someone chose to keep his mouth shut.

You see my point?

Shoaib Malik exposed it to Aqib Javed, then to public. What did he get in return? People never stopped villifying him, and this thread is a proof that Shoaib Malik is still being villified.

Apart from Shoaib and Younus, take a look at players who were involved in oath-taking group. They are in the team now, enjoying highly ranking status as well as popularity from the nation.

i think quite rightly Malik is vilified first and foremost for being one of the most undeserving selections in recent months. Everything else is secondary.

I am not talking about performance. He is still being vilified for being political instigator, orchestrator of oath-taking,...etc. which none of them are true, Allahu Alim as per our knowledge.

He was best player during 2005 to 2008. His performance was out of the question back then.

From 2009 to 2014, he deserves some criticism. Whenever he gets selected, people go berseck on him. Instead of going berseck on him, they should try on selectors for change. The selectors select them, not the other way around. He is a cricketer, like others cricketers who would try to perform in domestic to make comeback. At the end, it is up to selectors.

i am glad this things has been brough up again. we never came to the conclusion of what happened. how did a world cup winning captain who all younsters admired and who brought mohammad amir and umar akmal type talents into the team got removed so quickly. younis khan ws the only honorable man out of that episode. he wanted to have a public hearing on his trial, someone who has nothing to hide could only do that. While shoaib malik who almost every single person pointed out was a negative influence and caused disruptions was the first to have the ban removed by using political connections like a true sneak.

I remember Younis Khan defending this sneaky piece of sh** in the media for his constant selection of him during the 2009 World T20 and batted him at number 3 even when he didnt score a single boundary in that series just to back a former captain and the sneaky bast*** stabbed him in the back.

seriously we had a captain in malik who made irfan pathan look like malcolm marshall and a guy who got married over the phone. sneaky malik would not even let new better batsmen get selected for matches and always played medium pacers like his guru inzi bhai. The contant selection of shoaib is proof despite his crap performaces is proof of what this guy is made of. Inzamam misbah and shoaib have made pakistan cricket into the most boring team ever. They r even more patheitc than the 90s Indian team, unn becharon peh atleast taras to ata tha

how can anyone in their right mind even defend a guy like malik

If only I had to time and inclination to reply to this... Factually wrong and a bit of a nonsense really..

Nevermind

Anyone involved in this (if it happened) is officially certifiable as an utter disgrace. Plain and simple.

More than the nastiness of it, it's the immaturity? Sounds like something that hormonal 14 year-olds would get up to.

Inzi and Younis never liked each other, cuz Younis once called Inzi Aluu which offended him...also I think Malik was the leader of this oath taking brigade....

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has claimed that the 2009 players' revolt against him had its roots in the captaincy ambitions of senior players.

Younis claimed that the revolt was not carried out because the players were unhappy with his captaincy style or strong attitude.

"If the players had problems with me they could have spoken to me. They claimed that they didn't want me removed as captain but just wanted the cricket board to speak to me to change my attitude," Younis told a TV channel.

"Then how is it that when the player (s) met with the then PCB chairman, Ejaz Butt, one senior player, apparently [Shahid] Afridi

Younis also confirmed that a player (said to be Umar Akmal) had come to his room to ask for the Holy Quran and took it saying he wanted it because some players wanted to recite some Sarah’s before an important match.

The former captain said later the same Holy Quran was used to ask the players to take the oath to not reveal anything that was discussed at the revolting players meeting in South Africa during the Champions Trophy.

Ironically, after Younis resigned in late 2009, it was Misbah-ul-Haq and Afridi who captained Pakistan in red and white-ball cricket.

Younis said stayed put in his room all the time and focussed on his cricket during the last four years of his Pakistan career.

He was also asked about the infamous incident when in 2016 he abruptly announced his retirement from ODIs the day before a match against England.

"It was not abrupt at all. I had made a decision beforehand I would retire from ODIs as I was not selected in the ODI eleven for the last two years.

"On the night before the match, chief selector Haroon Rasheed called me and I told him I was thinking about retirement from ODIs and he turned around and told me rudely that it was up to me but he had got me selected for the series against England and I (Younis) should just listen to the team management and play as they wanted."

"I was very upset with his tone and that is why I announced my retirement the next morning."
