Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Argentina beat Netherlands in 2014 semi-final too.

Argentina are favorites this time.

Argentina and Netherlands have a great rivalry at the World Cups.

1978 WC final Argentina won 3-1

1998 WC quarter final Netherlands won 2-1

2014 WC semi final Argentina won 4-2 on penalties.

Overall Argentina has the edge, if you consider history.

I would give 55-45 to Argentina.

Netherlands will be too slick for Argentina and probably have one of best defences. Di Maria is a big loss for Argentina

USA and Aus did well considering this is not their top games
and yet they keep doing good.
Respect for their sporting nature.

Canada, Amreeka, and now Australia - knocked out of the WC.

The last remaining 5-eyes member is 'England'.

Canada, Amreeka, and now Australia - knocked out of the WC.

The other three don’t really play this as their top sport, England is the only one that does and always manages to be useless at it.

Let’s see what happens this time.

Argentina and Brazil would be a dream match.

They met not long ago in COPA America final. Argentina won that one 1-0.

Good to see the USA and Australia both thrown out of the tournament. I want proper sides to make the quarters not wannabee's who can barely kick a ball. Aussies were not that bad but for the second goal they conceded was all down to their goalie.

For once the German's fail to qualify where as the so called "golden generation" of Belgium struggled to impress. They should be the ones really kicking themselves with Lakaku, Hazard and De Bruyne Belgium should have done a lot better.

Tomorrow England should defeat Senegal in what should be a good fight. Mane must be feeling terrible missing this one.

The second game blew hot and cold. In phases it was good to watch, and in phases things were very slowed down. I´m usually not the one to focus much on individual performances in football, but Messi had a seriously good game there. Really seemed up for the challenge yesternight and that goal by him was pure brilliance. A delight to watch!

The Poland-France encounter promises to be a good one today. If Poland are to challenge this French team, I would pick their goal-keeper as the key man. He has had a great tournament so far, and the man has almost been defying gravity. Very impressed by him. Over to him to stop France today - as tough as it may seem, of course.

The Netherlands and their coach having a party!

Giroud scores but France have been awful so far and lucky to be ahead.

Poland were good in that half. Just one defensive lapse and France ruthlessly punished them.

Mbappe warming up now.

By the way how rubbish has Griezmann been so far in this match.

Olivier Giroud Becomes France's All-Time Record Goalscorer, Surpasses Thierry Henry

Olivier Giroud became France's record scorer on Sunday with 52 goals, eclipsing the mark he shared with Thierry Henry after striking against Poland at the World Cup. Giroud, 36, gave France a 1-0 lead just before half-time in their last-16 tie at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha on his 117th appearance for his country. It was the AC Milan forward's third goal of the tournament after his brace against Australia in France's opening group game.

Different level Mbappe.

Another superb strike.

2-0 should be match over.

Lovely goal Mbappe although hasn’t had his best game, has looked a bit leggy and frustrated.

3 lions fans hoping Poland will make a comeback:)))

Nah. France is the perfect Quarter Final for England. It is England’s big test. If they get there, and if they can beat France, then they can win the whole thing.

Will be a tight game. 55-45 to France I would say.

They have to beat Senegal first.

Strange thing is this has probably been Poland's best performance in the tournament.

Awful team to watch, glad they have been hammered today.

FULL-TIME
France 3-1 Poland

It's all over.

France will play England or Senegal on Saturday for a place in the World Cup semi-final.

I still believe that France have several weaknesses in midfield and defence and always look like they'll concded gaols.

Going forward they are unstoppable.

Mbappe what a genius he is already so many records to him, who can stop Argentina (No) Brazil or Spain may be

Olivier Giroud became France's all-time leading goalscorer as the World Cup holders coasted past Poland to reach the quarter-finals.

The AC Milan striker scored his 52nd goal for France to claim the country's outright record, surpassing the great Thierry Henry.

The historic goal came on the stroke of half-time after Giroud controlled Kylian Mbappe's pass before converting low into the net beyond the reach of Wojciech Szczesny.

But having provided the assist for the first goal, the brilliant Mbappe turned on the style by scoring two fabulous strikes in the second half.

He hit a powerful drive into the roof of the net from 16 yards for his first and curled home a wonderful second in injury time to take the lead in the Golden Boot race with five goals.

Didier Deschamps' side had been left frustrated up until the opener and could well have fallen behind.

Poland's best opening in the first half came when the ball dropped for Piotr Zielinski in the centre of the penalty area, but his strike was straight at Hugo Lloris.

Robert Lewandowski did manage a consolation for the Poles, rolling in a penalty with the last kick of the game.

Poland tried hard to stay in the game in the first half, but the obvious gap between the two teams kept becoming more and more apparent as the game went on.

Mbappe has been awesome so far. Levels above many others in the tournament.

Gareth Southgate makes just one change to the England side who beat Wales in their final group match.

Bukayo Saka comes in for Marcus Rashford, with Raheem Sterling not available due to family reasons.

England XI: Pickford, Walker, Shaw, Rice, Stones, Maguire, Henderson, Kane, Saka, Foden, Bellingham.

There is also just one change to the Senegal side who beat Ecuador in their last match.

Everton's Idrissa Gueye is out through suspension so Krepin Diatta comes into midfield.

Chelsea's Edouard Mendy starts in goal, while centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly captains the side.

Senegal XI: E Mendy, Koulibaly, N Mendy, Dia, Ciss, Ndiaye, Jakobs, Diatta, Sarr, Sabaly, Diallo.

Mbappe warming up now.

By the way how rubbish has Griezmann been so far in this match.

The thing is, while Griezmann is past his glory years, he's like Giroud, if you give him half a chance, he'd probably bury it. In a knockout competition when the pressure is on, you wouldn't bet against one of them scoring the winner.

Senegal weren't too bad, they just made a couple of mistakes which were pounced upon by England.

England absolutely ruthless with their finishing, Senegal have been ok but made some naive defensive mistakes and got punished by Bellingham, Henderson and Kane.

Senegal did well in the end to restrict England to only 3 goals. England win 3-0 at full time.

King Charles should do a blackout on Saturday night you don’t want to see what Mbappe is going to do to Maguire !!

England will meet France in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday after an impressive 3-0 demolition of Senegal at Al Bayt Stadium.

Gareth Southgate's side survived a nervy opening in which goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made an outstanding save from Boulaye Dia to run out convincing winners with a powerful display of attacking strength.

Jude Bellingham was England's star man, setting up the first goal for Jordan Henderson with a perfect cross after 38 minutes then having a hand in the second on the stroke of half-time, combining with Phil Foden as captain Harry Kane powered home his first of the tournament.

It left Kane just one behind Wayne Rooney's all-time record of 53 England goals and he now has the perfect stage here in Qatar to write a fresh page in the history books.

Foden was the creator once more as England wrapped the game up in the 57th minute, crossing for Bukayo Saka to show great awareness and touch to flick a delicate finish past Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

It capped the perfect night for manager Southgate, who opted to restore Saka and keep faith with Foden, leaving out Marcus Rashford despite his two goals in the win over Wales.

I am glad for Giroud to get the record for most goals scored for France. He is such an underrated player.

But Mbappe is going to absolutely smash that record in a couple of years. He has already scored over 30 goals for France and I predict he will score over 100 goals for his country. What a player he is.

Clinical performance from England. They are a young and energetic side and will definitley win a major tournament in the next 10-12 years.

The game against France will be a cracker.

Brazil seems to have the easiest road to the semi final. Will play Korea in the last 16 and possibly Croatia in the quarter finals.

Same was said of Tottenham. Bellingham is a different breed though. A genuine World Class talent that England haven't really had. He seems a level above Gerrard and Lampard. Kid's got aura

Japan must "fight like Samurai" when they face Croatia in the World Cup last 16 on Monday, says defender Yuto Nagatomo.

Neymar is available for Brazil's World Cup last-16 match against South Korea on Monday, coach Tite has confirmed.

I really hope Japan can beat Croatia. Would be an anticlimax after beating Spain and Germany to bow out now.

2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Matchday & Tournament Thread

Results of 3-1, 2-1, 3-1, and 3-0 so far, four of the eight matches of the Round of 16 have been much disappointing. Congratulations to England!

The Portugal-Switzerland match seems to be the one to set our sights on. If you look at it in terms of their chances, Portugal would possibly be having the toughest road to the Final - that is, IF they go all the way at all, of course. First Switzerland, then most likely Spain, then either of France or England, and then mostly likely either of Argentina or Brazil. This could either help you get ready for one challenge after another, or it means that your team runs out of gas in one of these matches and gets knocked out fairly early in the piece. Challenging times ahead for Ronaldo, I suppose.

Japan with the worst efforts I've ever seen. Three woeful penalties saved. 7 teams who've gone second now won shootout and Japan went first

They played the better football too!!

Goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic was the hero, saving three penalties in the shootout, as Croatia edged past Japan after a 1-1 draw to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

Ah damnit , heartbreak for Japan , every single time round of 16 is so different from group ones.

Croatia shatter Japan’s World Cup dream as experience proves key in penalty shoot-out

Japan had cut down two former World Cup winners but the 2018 runners-up ended their run as the scourge of the European powers. The Blue Samarai were the conquerors of Germany and Spain but were denied a third major scalp by a hat-trick of penalty saves from Dominik Livakovic.

In an extraordinary display, the Croatian goalkeeper guessed right three times out of four, denying Takumi Minamino, Kaoru Mitoma and finally Maya Yoshida to extend the World Cup career of Luka Modric. Croatia’s captain had gone off before the first shootout of the 2022 tournament. In his absence, Nikola Vlasic, Marcelo Brozovic and Mario Pasalic all converted, rendering Marko Livaja’s miss irrelevant and ensuring the Dinamo Zagreb goalkeeper was the hero. Only his compatriot Danijel Subasic and Portugal’s Ricardo had ever made three saves in a World Cup penalty shootout before. Livakovic joined them.

If Croatia can savour shootouts, Japan must dread them. Zlatko Dalic’s team had twice prevailed on penalties in their run to the final in 2018. For Japan, as in 2010, a last-16 tie was decided on spot kicks. They have still never reached a World Cup quarter-final and can rue the way they lost an advantage they gained in an excellent first half.

They have still never reached a World Cup quarter-final and can rue the way they lost an advantage they gained in an excellent first half.

They did so thanks to a talisman. Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Xherdan Shaqiri had scored in the last three weeks before Ivan Perisic joined a select group. He was a driving force in an improved second-half display, with greater urgency. Croatia’s only goals this tournament had been against Canada but, for the fifth successive major tournament, Perisic found the net.

Creativity came from an unlikely quarter, Dejan Lovren getting an assist in open play. His cross was curled invitingly but Perisic’s bullet header from 12 yards was outstanding. It was an illustration of the kind of aerial ability few wingers possess. A scorer in the semi-final and final four years ago, it showed Perisic has not lost his knack for delivering big goals.

He might have had a goal earlier, with Shuichi Gonda blocking a shot after he robbed Takehiro Tomiyasu, but his equaliser could have led to a second for Croatia. Modric connected sweetly with a flying volley that drew an athletic save from Gonda. The substitute Ante Budimir headed just wide. An increasingly rampant Perisic had a crisp strike deflected just wide by Tomiyasu. Yet in extra time, only Lovro Majer, with a 120th-minute shot into the advertising hoardings, came remotely close.

Nor did Japan really threaten to restore their lead. Livakovic had to tip over a long-range shot from the impressive Wataru Endo but otherwise, theirs was a muted response. Hajime Moriyasu, the master of substitutions in the group stages, turned to Mitoma and Takuma Asano, two of those who have made an impact from the bench, amid a flurry of changes. This time his magic touch deserted him. Mitoma had one inspired run in the 105th minute but directed his shot at Livakovic, just as he could not beat the keeper in the shootout.

The match petered out into penalties, whereas Japan began at pace. They had beaten Spain with just 17 per cent of the ball but, while still having a minority share, enjoyed more possession and displayed ambition as Ritsu Doan proved he is more than just a super-sub. A scorer against Germany and Spain was promoted to start, adopted a roving brief and exerted an impact. He was a reason for their swift start, though perhaps in promoting Doan, Japan cost themselves a game-changer from the bench.

They ought to have lead in the second minute when Shogo Taniguchi glanced a header wide. At the end of a terrific move, Daichi Kamada skied as shot after Doan found him. They had a threat on the break, invariably involving Junya Ito and his crossing.

They took a deserved lead, Daizen Maeda reacting fastest to finish emphatically when Ritsu Doan’s cross was met by Taniguchi, who turned it back across the six-yard box. Taniguchi was onside by the slenderest of margins and it was just Maeda’s second international goal, but a reward for the series of shifts he has put in alone up front this tournament for a team who have often played without the ball. They symbolic moment of his first half may have been when Maeda left the usually immaculate Modric on his backside.

Yet at the end it was Modric who remains in the tournament. Japan, engineers of two of the great shock, endearing overachievers, nevertheless met a familiar fate. They lost in the last 16 again.

Agree they played a lot better.

Ive always felt with Japanese players, they dont handle pressure well. It is a society where pressure is the daily norm. Unlucky for them.

Now its nearly time for Brazil v South Korea.

Neymar is back in the starting line up.

My prediction. Brazil 3-0 South Korea. :pele

Guess Asian teams will be knocked out by end of the day!

Yeah.

But, to be honest, not surprising. Not a single Asian team deserve to be in quarterfinal at this time. Teams like South Korea and Japan are Round of 16 teams.

Overall, Japan didn't play bad, but those were seriously below average three penalty kicks. Lifeless kicks without power and push. Bad! Feel sad for them and their fans.

Congratulations to Croatia!

Yeah.

Japan outplayed Croatia having beaten Spain and Germany. That's an absurd assertion

Yeah.

I think Japan deserved it , really unfortunate wonder what makes Europeans and Latin Americans so much better at the sport.

Many Africans that grew up in Europe play really good though but African teams don't make it often to Qtrs either(have done it thrice only until now)

Also, how did Japan outplay Croatia? They just got knocked out.

Japan beating Spain was an anomaly. It was an upset just like other upsets in this World Cup.
