Mikel Arteta: Gabriel Jesus' 'contagious mentality' can inspire Arsenal this season

Mikel Arteta has been surprised by Gabriel Jesus' swift adaptation to life at Arsenal and is relishing harnessing the Brazilian's "contagious" mentality.

The Gunners kick-off the new Premier League season away at Crystal Palace on Friday Night Football - live on Sky Sports - with Jesus expected to make his competitive debut for the club following his £45million transfer from champions Manchester City.

With Jesus shouldering the new-found burden of expectation his arrival in north London has generated, Arteta called for patience, but the manager insists the early signs are promising.

"When you bring in top players who are coming from top clubs where they have been extremely successful over the years, they are going to expect that expectation," Arteta said.

"The role Gabriel has here is going to be very different to the role he had at his previous club, that needs some adaptation and some time.

"He's done it fantastically well, we are surprised how quickly he has done it, but we have to share that responsibility.

"He's an enormous talent, a player with mentality that is so contagious, and he is going to give us a lot, but it is a team contribution at the end of the day."

Arteta's position at Arsenal came under intense scrutiny at the start of last season after newly-promoted Brentford inflicted the first of three defeats in their opening three Premier League outings.

However, after a summer spending spree and 100 per cent record from five pre-season matches, the Spaniard insists preparations for this season will ensure the Gunners make the best possible start this time.

"It is different, everything that happened before that game [at Brentford] was pretty strange and unique, the preparation, the pre-season we had," he added.

"Now is different context, we are really excited, looking forward to the new season and will try and start in the best possible way. This is how we have with our preparation."

Asked whether his Arsenal team were finally in his image after the summer recruitment drive, Arteta added: "It's always been my team, these are our players and always we have had intentions to get the best out of them.

"It's true we have trimmed and changed the squad massively in the last two windows and you feel like now the players we have are more specific and better to the way we want to play."

Excited for tomorrow's match and the season ahead. Really hope Jesus, Saliba and Zinchenko, plus the youngsters being a year older, will make a significant impact.

We need to actually start the season on a positive note this time, and not have to play catch up.

There are no excuses of Covid or unfinished transfer business like Brentford last year, we have a settled XI from pre-season and they have had time to gel with minimal injuries.

So much hype for this season!

They better win good or its back to square one

We always miss out on a good start.

squad is still very thin on quality, you get past the starting 11 and bench is poor. 1 major injury to partey and jesus and Arsenal will be back to where they were at end of season.

I have a feeling Palace will beat Arsenal tonight.

Great game to start off the new season !

Yes usually that's how it starts for Arsenal every year!

Its never easy travelling to Selhurst Park. Veira has shown good leadership, will not allow his players to take it easy or accept defeat esp at home.

A big career defining season for Arteta, if he doesnt make top 4 I think he will be sacked. Arteta needs to stick to one style of play, try not to make too many changes or think out the box. The problem for Arsenal is there are many teams fighting for the top 8 now.

what an awful bench for tonight. pepe, eddie and riess nelson as the attack options if needed.

Those Arsenal fans over hyping squad improvement and bench strength are deluded.

There's more business to be done. We need the following:

Centre forward - to compete with Nketiah for 1st reserve
Right winger - an upgrade on Pepe
Right back - an upgrade on Soares and perhaps someone who can compete with Tomiyasu as he's injury prone
2 x defensive midfielders

i can only see 1 more incoming to be honest, there seems to be no urgency to bring any more players in. we bid for Raphina early on and now seem to have no urgency to get a wide forward in.

I agree we need 4 or 5 players more in the positons you menioned. 5th or 6th place finish this season coming up.

New season, same Arsenal?

You are not in the Champions League, not come close to winning the league in years. Why would the likes of Raphina or other top class players want to join Arsenal.

Great managers can make top 4 with such a squad, no excuses for Arteta now.

scrappy 1st half.

Saliba been solid
Jesus movement excellent

Ben white doesnt look comfortable at RB
Ramsdales kicking has been poor

Odegaard once again getting bullied in an away game and non existent. should not be captain

xhaka stupid yellow card now has to be careful.

we need a 2nd goal as palace will score in this game.

Arteta should have been sacked ages ago, if Arsenal dont make top 4 this season he needs to be sacked.

Once the players know a set styple of play, the team has enough quality to make top 4 but imo his arrogance of management may let him down again.

20 mins to go, can the Gunners hang on? Not sure.

Palace should have put one of their chances away this half. Might go on to regret it because as much as Arsenal have not been as good after the opening 20 minutes, they can easily score a second and kill this off.

Job done by Arsenal.

Not the easiest of places to go an pick up points.

Impressed with William Saliba at the back and Gabriel Jesus looked pretty good also.

A very average performance and lucky palace didnt take their chances.

White looked poor at RB.
xhaka and oddegaard got bullied in midfield, no change to last season.
The fact oddegaard was made captain and will start every game is a joke.

We need to sign tielemens and another winger.

Saliba was awesome and deserved man of match.

Good game snd most importantly a win.

First 20 minutes was Awsome from us and we could have scored two or three in that period.

The two Gabriel's upfront were electric in that spell.
Saliba was brilliant too. Not only is he tall and strong but has pace too. Solid performance from him throughout.

Jesus will push Nketiah to perform and Tierney coming off the bench shows we have depth at leftback.

Second half was hearts in your mouth stuff until the lucky second goal.

Still need a decent right winger as back up to Tokishima and need Odeguard to step it up away from home.

All in all a very good performance against a side with a very good home record and a team that has had success against us in the last few seasons.

oddeagard wont step it up in tough games, he was like that all last season. if that was ozil doing such performances he would get slated, but because its poster boy captain arteta will ignore it. reason we lost so many away games last season was due to being bullied in midfield.

on paper we have leicester, bournemouth, fulham and villa now so we need 12 points from those games before we go to old trafford.

Saliba and jesus were outstanding tonight.

We won't finish below Man U so lets not be over dramatic but I can see us slipping to 5th if we have injuries to the likes of Partey, Saka, Jesus and whoever plays right back as their backups are inadequate.

It was 0-1 for the vast majority of the game.

After watching bits, imo Arsenal will do ok but not make Champions League. If you guys are happy with playing on Thursdays, we all are too. :)

Obviously I'm not happy and agree with Amjid that we still need to make more signings. Having said that, I'm not entirely convinced by Chelsea and we can finish above Spurs following our new signings.

If we don't bring on many more players, then I'm worried a couple of injuries will dent our chances but our first team is definitely top 4 material.

We should be delighted that Arsenal opted for Odegaard over Maddison. The stats from last season will tell you he was phenomenal for us last season.

Yeah fully agree. We need more adequate backups on the right hand side. Also need another striker to compete with Nketiah and at least one DM.

come end of transfer window chelsea will have made 4 or 5 more major signings and will finish above arsenal.

Arsenals only top 4 chance is trying to finish above spurs, but they have a better balanced squad and world class manager.

Crystal Palace 0-2 Arsenal

Arsenal got their campaign off to the perfect start as Mikel Arteta's side beat Crystal Palace in an entertaining 2022-23 Premier League curtain-raiser at Selhurst Park.

The Gunners maintained their impressive pre-season form with an energetic performance that was rewarded when Gabriel Martinelli nodded in a 20th-minute opener from new signing Oleksandr Zinchenko's headed assist.

It took Palace most of the first half to adapt to the visitors' tempo, but once they did Odsonne Edouard forced Aaron Ramsdale into a save after Joachim Andersen's header found him in the six-yard box.

Buoyed by a vibrant home crowd, the Eagles poured forward in search of a leveller but it was Arsenal who found the net again, Marc Guehi inadvertently heading Bukayo Saka's fierce cross into his own goal late on.

Between Arsenal's savvy transfer business, free-scoring pre-season form and being the focus of Amazon's latest All or Nothing series, there has been plenty to whet their fans' appetites this summer.

We may have to wait until the second series to learn whether Arteta piped Palace anthem 'Glad All Over' out during training before this one - as he did with 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before visiting Anfield last season - or whether it was the Spaniard's artwork that set the tone, but his side arrived with a relentless intensity that made Martinelli's opening goal feel inevitable.

The 21-year-old Brazilian had earlier missed a glorious chance after Gabriel Jesus waltzed through the Palace defence, skewing wide of the far post after his compatriot's effort was blocked, but he stooped to head in from a clever corner routine.

The Gunners lost their opening three league games last season, including another Friday night opener at Brentford, and ultimately narrowly missed out on a return to Champions League football.

But they have strengthened with the acquisitions of Jesus and Zinchenko from Manchester City and both already look to set to have a big impact on Arteta's young squad.

Jesus, who scored seven goals in five pre-season games, caused Palace's back four problems with his relentless work-rate as well as his talent on the ball, and he laid on a chance for Martin Odegaard that the Gunners captain might have done better with.

It was another Arsenal debutant who really impressed, with 21-year-old centre back William Saliba - who has spent most of his three years at the club out on loan, producing a fine defensive display.

The Frenchman was part of a back four that had to show resilience amid the hosts' growing threat, before Guehi's own goal following a snappy Saka break made things more comfortable.

It was a result and performance that will have pleased boss Arteta, while simultaneously giving Arsenal's top-four rivals a glimpse of what they are up against this term.

Arteta used the comparison of Arsenal's opening day 2-0 defeat to Brentford last season to showcase how much more resilience he has in his squad now.

He said: "You don't win here without it [resilience] and we experienced that last season. We started in a really different way to what we did last year. Building that mentality and finding a way to go through those moments and clean sheets in this league is going to be vital for our success and we have managed to do that. Hopefully that will breed some confidence in the team."

Arteta on more signings: We are going to try

Following Arsenal's 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on the opening day of the 2022/23 Premier League season, Mikel Arteta revealed the club is still hoping to make more signings before the transfer window closes.

He told Sky Sports: "We are going to try. We have a few things going on now and if we get them it will be great - but for now, we have to work with the players we have."

even with united in decline our record in PL at old trafford is poor. last seasons game being a prime example of team failing to beat a weak united side while other teams went to OT and won with ease.

He was disappointing yesterday but I find your criticism of him last season to be completely unjustified when he was doing bits for the team.

He did exactly the same last season went missing in tough away games vs palace, spurs, newcastle.

The guy is a poor mans mesut ozil.

I'll leave you to answer that for yourself.

Very misleading stats. i suggest you go look at the "Big chances" created for the PL stats last season and you will see oddegaard way down the list of players.

https://www.fotmob.com/leagues/47/stats/season/16390/players/big_chance_missed

Also you go on about he was better than Maddison? :)))

Goals and Assists last season

Maddison 20
Oddegaard 11

il leave you to re-think you hilarious theory that Ode is better Maddison

Delighted?

Maddison got 20 Goals / assists, more big chances created and better X/G per 90 mins.

clearly shows you didnt watch maddison last season.

ode was not even close in any of those regards.

ESR got more Goals and Assist then oddegaard last season.

But now because Arteta's pet has been made captain it means ESR will be benched most of time.

ESR can play 8 and wide 10 role in team.

Only Auto pick in Arsenals midfield should be partey. Instead we make a captain who gets bullied in tough games.

how is that leadership when you dissapear.

let me make myself clear.

Ode is a good player when we are playing mediocre teams at home and he has plenty of time on ball so when we play leicesters, fulhams etc.. at home he will be fine.

but in tough away games hes worse then ozil.

You dont make such a player captain.

I admit Maddison is a better goal scorer. Odegaard's finishing needs a lot of improvement. I won't disagree on that

But as a playmaker, you're taking a simplistic view here which is why Sky have adopted a more in-depth and sophisticated methodology to measure his success in his role as a number 10 last season. You can't dismiss his rankings in each of those areas among PL midfielders just because you don't rate him. Give him the credit he deserves.

Obviously Odegaard's assists are going to be lower when he has Lacazette upfront.

If James Maddison and Odegaard were Pakistani cricketers, the former reminds me of Haris Rauf and the latter reminds me of Shaheen Afridi.

Buying Odegaard for less than half the price was an absolute steal as he's much better. Maddison is a rip off for £70m+.

The only thing that Maddison does better is goals. Here's another source:

So why did Norway make him captain when they could've given the armband to Haaland?

Wow AJ I thought Leeds fans took a gloomy view at times :))

ive supported Arsenal since 1987 so i dont buy into the hype with some players or get carried away after 1 game, ive seen plenty ups and downs in that time period.

So why did Norway make him captain when they could've given the armband to Haaland?

oh big wow hes captain of norway a mediocre international side, we are talking about being captain of a big club like Arsenal.

Just because the guy runs around and in presses in a game doesnt make him captaincy material. Also i dont see why hes an autopick in side either when ESR id fit and just as capable of playing number 8 position.

Arsenal are holding talks to sign AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali, 22, but the Serie A giants want £46m for the Italy international. (Daily Mail)

Signing a 19 year old winger makes zero sense.

1) He will take ages to aclimatize / he would be just a back up player.

We need proven players in attacking positions. weve gone from chasing a PL proven player in Raphina to yet another young kid.

The squad depth issue will not be fixed, the drop in quality from saka to replacement again will be huge.

Recruitment of midfield and winger need to be top players not more youngsters.

Arsenal's Scottish left-back Kieran Tierney, 25, is also among the names on Manchester City's shortlist. (90min)

Arsenal need to bridge the gap to chelsea and spurs. To do that we need to improve our mediocre midfield. one injury to partey and we are in trouble again.

Also our midfield do not score enough goals. That means our wingers and forwards have to. signing some 19 unknown kid or the french version of pepe (moussa diaby) is not going increase Arsenals goal out put.

Jesus!

What a goal :)

Arsenal seemed to be sleeping a bit but better now

Arsenal 1-0 Leicester

If that had been Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, we'd be banging on about it for weeks.

A gorgeous finish by Gabriel Jesus and the Emirates is bouncing.

All goals by Arsenal so far...

Goal Alert: Arsenal 2-1* Leicester *(Own goal: Saliba 53‘)

Goal Alert: Arsenal *3-1 Leicester *(Xhaka 54‘)

Arsenal 4-2 Leicester

This has been a cracker.

But while Arsenal are heading for six points from two games, Leicester are set for one from two.

The Foxes also have games against Chelsea and Manchester United on the horizon.

The impressive Gabriel Jesus scored his first Premier League goals for Arsenal as Mikel Arteta's side beat Leicester City in an entertaining encounter at Emirates Stadium.

The Brazilian striker, signed from Manchester City in the summer, scored twice before the break and missed several chances for a hat-trick as well assisting his side's other goals.

William Saliba's own goal early in the second half gave Leicester hope, but Granit Xhaka struck just two minutes later to restore Arsenal's two-goal lead.

James Maddison again reduced the arrears, only for Gabriel Martinelli to quickly made it 4-2 as the Gunners maintained their 100% start to the season.

What app?..

Good win, going forward excellent. 2 Sloppy goals given away, need to just tighten up at back.

Jesus deserved a hat trick today.

Gabriel Jesus looks a gun signing.

Could be the man to fire Arsenal back into the Champions League.

Jesus was amazing.

I don't think we should sign Tielemans. I wasn't that impressed and I can see why Arsenal are in no rush to sign him because he isn't coming to the Emirates.

He would need to stay fit and in form all season. we still need another striker and winger in the squad.

A much better start to the season in comparison to the poor starts we have had in the recent past.

A much better start to the season in comparison to the poor starts we have had in the recent past.

Absolutely - by this time in the last season we were talking of sacking Arteta!

Just need to remain focused in the easier away games and bag the draw or win. Those will define Arsenal’s campaign and getting back into top 4

A much better start to the season in comparison to the poor starts we have had in the recent past.

Out of the 1st 8 fixtures we have 3 tough away games (palace, united, brentford) so there should be no excuse to not get off to a good start.

Big diff when your not playing chelsea and city early on.

Despite 2 good wins we still need to strengthen midfield and a goal scoring winger, players will lose form, injuries and suspensions. Arteta and Edu need to learn from naive and stupid mistakes from january.

Next 7 fixtures:

Bournemouth (A)
Fulham (H)
Villa (H)
M United (A)
Everton (H)
Brentford (A)
Spurs (H)

We should demand nothing less than 18 points from those first 6 games, will give us unbelievable momentum and belief going into that huge NLD. Undoubtedly Spurs and Chelsea are our main rivals this season.

Guys trust me on this.
Zinchenko is pure class....

He was the best player on the pitch against Leicester

Brentford and united away will be tough. In saying that we shouldnt not be losing any of our 1st 8 games if we are showing an improvement this season. Minimum 6 or 7 wins from these 8 games.

Do you think we should still buy Tielemans? Thought he was poor against us on Saturday.

I have a feeling Arsenal are waiting till the last week to acquire him for a lower fee from LCFC.

You seem more confident about beating Spurs at home than the away trips against Brentford and Man U. How comes?

I'm not fully convinced by him yet, especially at LB. He seems to be very accomplished playing with the ball, as you'd expect from a Guardiola player, but defensively he seems very lacking. Still remember how a 30-year-old Jordan Ayew tormented him last week, and even a couple days ago was caught out of position for Leicester's 2nd goal.

Zinchenko will play a lot of games at LB as Tierney is made of glass, but in any big or crunch game, especially away from home, I'd much rather Tierney's defensive stability at LB, whereas Zinchenko is good for these types of attacking home games.

In an ideal world where Tierney is always fit, Zinchenko would compete for Xhaka's spot.

Tielemans was very poor on saturday, Leicester seem to be setting up every game with an 8 man defence (3 CBs and 5 in midfield) and just isolating maddison and vardy and trying to just nick a goal. so its no wonder he was ineffective.

we need another top class midfielder as partey wont stay fit and xhaka will misd games through suspension during season. The drop of in quality when elneny or lokonga player is there for all to see.

I think we need another DM or ball carrying goal scoring midfielder, Edu and Arteta cant make same naive and stupid mistakes again. im 50/50 on tielemens now but we need a top midfield signing.

You seem more confident about beating Spurs at home than the away trips against Brentford and Man U. How comes?

I didnt mention the the spurs game.

The 1st 8 games the worse case scenario should be 6 wins and 2 draws.

No matter how bad united are at moment are record at OT is poor in PL, both times in PL history we have been favs to win their we have lost 3-2 (season leicester won league and last season).

Also we will see how good we are when we play brentford as that will be tougher then palace game was.

After these 8 games in Oct we have spurs, liverpool and city at home. So if we have improved then we have to take points off liverpool and city no excuses.

Spurs at home we aint losing. They will do what they did vs chelsea and park the bus and play on counter. Its one game i know we wont be losing.

Spurs/liverpool/city at home we need to be targeting 7 points. We lost to city and liverpool home and away last season. we didnt score in 4 games vs liverpool last season and the 1 goal vs city was 1st one in ages vs them in the league.

Spurs didnt lose to city or liverpool last season and we should be aiming for same.

13 defeats in league last season needs to be halved to 6 or 7 for me to see a so called improvement.
