Zero urgency in play other than madueke.

We played well 1st half but made no real desire to win the game

We can have all squad additions in world, the managers Stoke City tactics haven't worked

This loss is on Arteta. It's 3 points dropped nothing more nothing less. Won't shape the season but he can't get away with setting up like that.

Gyokores had no service whatsoever... As expected.

Also looked good going past people trying to make something happen. But God knows why he or Nwaneri didn't start.

Madueke actually looked good but he got subbed off.

Until the subs the football was slow, dull, predictable and robotic. We had chances in 1st half to counter Liverpool and just chose to slow play down.

Martinelli and Merino both should have been hooked at HT

Trying to win the game from set pieces alone got exposed today.

Eze been brought on to late was no shock either

Can't wait for the bore feast when we play newcastle at SJP in September
 
Arteta deserves to lose this. You can't play for a draw for 70 mins and then expect to start playing for 20 mins.

I don't think anyone can support him unless you're happy with second place.

The squad was good enough to come here and win the game. But as usual, as soon as expection goes from not being favourites to taking advantage this manager loses his head.

I said all along the lack of creativity will be exposed in midfield when you move away from 1st choice players.

We picked 3 holding players and were trying to nick a game on set pieces.

This guys is rightly called Spanish pulis

Arsenal is a great club but Artetas mentality , the type of signings he make , his defensive mindset , scared of losing rather than risking a win is the sole reason they can’t get over the line . Merino , zubimendi and Rice aren’t skilled enough to create , all no6s . Arteta went to Anfield get a point , nearly did but its ways always a gamble against a team which scores every game .

Thought Arsenal controlled the first half. We didn't put your defence under any pressure despite Saliba's injury and our pressing was mostly ineffectual.

However despite having better attacking subs, you still didn't create enough clear chances like at OT where Arsenal's XG from open play was 0.29. Today it was 0.33.

Is this attributable to the injury to Saka, lack of quality depth in wide areas, Arteta's fundamental conservatism, or all of the above ?
 
No surprise we set up to play for a draw today, when you got cheerleader in Peshawar and other places celebrating 3 draws in 3 seaaons. Awful mindset, same sort of mindset today.

That starting line up pretty much killed everyone's confidence going into todays game

Forget all this XG rubbish

Arsenal had 1 effort on goal all game, zero urgency in passing to even score until we went 1-0 behind.

Usual slow reactive subs, instead of proactive.

The robotic choreographed football is on this manager

15M a year, 1BN spent to turn up to anfield like Stoke city

No surprise sakas injured again, havertz played while injured. White the same last season and got injured.

Arsenal now have a full squad so such stupid risk didn't have to be taken.. but he will keep doing it

Yep. That's another problem. The Gooners midfield is to Robotic. They can't pass through the lines. It's sideways or backwards.

Wirtz was really good second half. Ran the show. Salah let him down big time.
 
Going forward that performance was no different OT. Signing a top striker and then using a midfield with zero creativity.

Had plenty time and resources.

Arsenal are well drilled at the back , it’s clear they practice this regularly but for this match their 3 mids were close , making it difficult for our attackers . It’s not easy to press against as they also drilled in long balls down the wings . It’s a defensive strategy but once the opposition figures it out , they tire it can be exploited as you are pretty lifeless in attacking by then . If not the free kick Liverpool would have attacked , a goal was coming by the home team playing proper football .
 
Zubimendi was made to look ineffective today because those infront of him (rice / merino) was slow and passive and pedestrian. I warned everyone that it doesn't matter what Zubimendi does if you put people infront of him who can't pass wind let alone a fkin footbal

If Arteta is to turn it around, he cannot carry on setting up his side so defensively, especially away from home against the likes of Liverpool, City, Newcastle, Spurs, Chelsea, Forest, Everton and etc.

I miss the free flowing football from the 22/23 season. Arsenal were really good during the first half of the season, where they accumulated 50 points from just 19 games. Unfortunately, they tailed off during the remainder of the season because of inexperience and Saliba's injury.

Arsenal had a season of two halves in the following season. Defensive in the first half of 23/24 but were then rejuvenated in the latter half after the Dubai trip in Jan 2024.

Since last season, Arteta has gone defensive. He needs to bring back the 22/23 free flowing football if he's going to turn it around. I'm not convinced that he will revert nor am I convinced he can win Arsenal the title with how he's currently set up the team this season.

Selecting Martinelli to start over Eze was a huge blunder. He could've fixed this at HT but continued to persist with the toothless Brazilian. Eze did more in 10 or so mins than Martinelli did in 75-80 mins.

Same old from Arteta. I hope I'm wrong but I've seen enough after 5.5 years to write him off and say we need to sack him.

Him and Edu were recruited largely because they were the best ex-players the club could recruit for their respective positions. Look at the difference Berta has made in one transfer window. Imagine what this Arsenal could achieve if he was to join forces with a proven winner as a manager at the highest level.

There is clearly something wrong with how Arteta trains his players. 3 games in and we've already seen 4 major players in the side get injured.

Great analysis as usual.

xG of 0.33 and 0.29 is shocking. Goes to show how lucky Arsenal have been to get 3 points from their visits to OT and Anfield, as they should have lost both fixtures.

I would say it's attributable to Arteta's team selection and Misbah-esque conservatism.

Picking Martinelli over Eze is the equivalent of picking Shan Masood over Saeed Anwar. Odegaard/Nwaneri should have started over Merino.

It's not just the training, it's just over using players as well. Which ultimately comes when you don't trust rest of the squad.

Arteta now admitting saliba was injured in warm up. Then still plays him 🤦‍♂️ which is just sheer gross neglect and incompetence.

On a side note fair play to Mosquera who came in and did a job. With also the left side CB signing, we should be able to rotate more as a squad.

Until the midfield creativity issue is addressed we will keep seeing these toothless midfield displays from our team. Reality is that had havertz been fit today, Arteta would have have just shoved him in there instead of merino which would have be an equally as bad

Eze should have started in ten, unfortunately Arteta ain't brave enough to try Nwaneri or dowman in their from the start.

We are going to get more injuries this season, do we have a squad to cope? Yes. But sadly we don't have a manager capable of managing a squad under adversity.

Well said. I thought Mosquera was class. Possibly our best player in the game.

If Saliba was injured in the warm-up that sums up then indeed that reflects very poorly on Arteta. An injury is not only a risk for the player's availability in the longer run but also if he's being hindered by the injury that could be the difference between a defending and conceding a goal.

That's harsh. Timber is another in the red zone and because of the amount of ground he covers during the game he tends to be running on empty during end of games or even cramp. I knows he plays like a machine but he isn't one.

Timber is not mentally weak. To perform at the level he has done after spending a season out due to an ACL takes great mental strength to.

He had cramp and needed a hand up

Arsenal couldn't actually make any more subs as they used 3 sub windows during game. Otherwise he would have been take off. He's another player being over played and will break down at somepoint this season.

Maybe I’m wrong but I was miffed because he didn’t seem to have any issues getting up as soon as the ref and Gakpo left him.

I agree that Timber isn’t mentally weak which is why I thought this was out of character from him.
 
Did Arsenal look like title contenders today?

In first half for 15 mins they controlled the game. In second half after subs they looked good for a bit.

Zubi had one brilliant ball for madueke. Partey’s presence in midfield used to help us more in such games. I am of the view zubi’s great but a different profile and we miss partey’s interceptions, tackles etc.

Martinelli no, him and gyo didn’t work together at all. Eze starts every game from now on.

Madueke played well but would still be a downgrade on Saka at RW.

Odegaard should play the no 10 position and Merino didn’t work for me in that role.

Mosquera filled in nicely for Saliba but that was a significant blow. Hopefully the injury is not at all serious.

Declan don’t take any more corners from that side of goal. Those and his free-kick was so so bad especially when Szobalzai actually showed how it’s done.

Raya maybe could have positioned himself more in the middle from the ball that far out.

Arteta gets the blame for playing Merino in that position who was the weakest link today taking on the most creative role. Ethan should have started that.

Calafiori and Gabriel were the best players from Arsenal for me. Gyo should get himself more involved.

That imbicile, the one I will not name, is no where to be seen..... didn't even take until October or November for him to crawl back under the stone... hope he stays there
 
Arteta will now know he hasn't much time left to turn things around, not after the amount spent on new recruits...

It's also the first time when all the pundits are speaking up about his defensive approach... He may be stubborn but if things don't improve fast I don't see him lasting until December...

Alternatives, I wouldn't mind any one of the Crystal Palace, Fulham or Bournemouth coaches...

It was a 1-0 win early on in the season, disappointing for Arsenal but a long way to go. Arsenal have some tough away games coming up so need to be more confident in scoring goals away. If you want to win the league, you have to go for it, take some risks.

We have also added quality. Isak would have been the dream signing no doubt however looking at it from the perspective of Eze+ Gyokores for £120 million is also good business and some may argue gives us more options, time will tell.

Liverpool fans have every right to be confident - they are the reigning champions who just beat their closest challengers and then gone and bought the hottest striker around - Life is good for pools fans HOWEVER Arsenal need to stay close and not give them a free run like last time. We have a good squad now - Liverpool depth is a bit iffy

3 defensive midfielders, 4 CB’s and a defensive forward in Martinelli for good measure.

Slot backed his best creative attacking players from start to finish.

Arteta got exactly what he deserved.

I mentioned this to many times before about the safety 1st football, with squad we have now leaving all attacking number 10s on the bench. Starting with a midfield of essential 3 Defensive midfielders is a criminal offence

Liverpool were always going to sign another attacker. Defensively they have looked not great, but then we decided yesterday we weren't going to test then in that area.

If they sign gheui today, that will solidify their team more.

As far as we go, we needed a left winger and more creative signings. But we won't, we could have prime cesc, rosicky, etc.. in this team and the manger will still insist on terrorist football.

Good squad or not, the 2 weak links the captain and manager will be our downfall.
 
Berta has done a good job on players in..

But players out, seems no one wants to buy any Arsenal left overs or trash

Chelsea have offloaded 300M worth of players this summer. The garnacho signing made no sense, but Chelsea do know how to balance the books

Even if we bought Isak, it wouldn't have changed anything because of Arteta's Misbah-esque cowardice. He played 4 x defenders, 3 x DMs and selected a Martinelli who's good at tracking back instead of Eze.

It's like Misbah selecting Babar, Rizwan and Imam to bat together in a World T20 contest.

Gyokeres’s performance left me feeling deflated. There was a lot of hype around him, I don’t know if you shared the excitement.

Even Zubi looked out of ideas. Merino and Martinelli had no clue what their role was. Gyo looked lost.

Chelsea ended the window with a balanced net spend whereas Arsenal ended up negative £245M something.

Arteta had the transfer window of his choice one after the other. Is Gyokeres even good, that was a no show.

I thought Garnacho was a good player at Utd last year and scored some very significant goals. Chelsea got him in place of Noni and it looks like an upgrade being honest. Garnacho is more threatening than Madueke imo. Chelsea were able to upgrade and Arsenal always happy to help. Madueke was good yesterday but he didn’t look like starting xi level for potential title contenders.

Chelsea made some good signings but they didn't address their main 2 weak areas which were the goal keeper and CB positions. For that reason they will fall short in a title challenge.

Chelsea have Palmer, Neto, estaveo, J Pedro, Delap and gittens as attackers so signing garnacho made zero sense. Yeah he was alright at united, but he's not better then any of players mentioned.

My mate whose a Chelsea a fan said it was a signing which wasn't needed either.

I did not comment over the last couple of days because I was very sad.

However, having reflected on the result and after gathering my thoughts, I think Arsenal fans are being overly critical. There is a reason why Arsenal fans are the most toxic fans in the world. It is only MW 3, and they are already thinking that they have surrended the title to Liverpool which is comical.

I agree that Arteta set up the team in a more conservative manner than he should have. There was no creative outlet in midfield because you were essentially playing with three defensive-minded midfielders and an absolute clown of a LW who should have never started and should never started another PL game.

Eze should have started over him, or he could have started in midfield. Maybe, Odegaard should have started as well and subbed out in the second half if he wasn't fit enough to play the whole match.

Liverpool play a high line, had a makeshift CB and have been conceding a lot of goals, so Arsenal wasted an opportunity to be more offensive.

Gyokeres is getting flak for his performance, but he was as involved in the game as Salah and Ekitike were. He couldn't have done anything when there was no service. There was a single ocassion where an Arsenal sent him through on goal. Gyokeres is a demon in front of the goal who doesn't need a second invitation, but you have to put him through.

There was one moment in the second half where Martinelli was running at Konate and Gyokeres was making a run behind him, but as usual, Martinelli had his head down and made a complete mess.

Liverpool were as offensive as Arsenal were, and they were playing at home, but I don't see them getting as much criticism for it because they nicked it in the end. That glorious free-kick was the only difference between the two sides.

It is not a big deal to lose at Anfield, considering that it has been two years since Arsenal last lost to Liverpool, and Liverpool get spanked at the Emirates almost every single time. lets not act like this was the title decider because it was far from it.

Madueke was a positive, and he shut up a lot of Arsenal fans who were on his throat without giving him a chance. He is one of the best backup wingers in the league. He can make things happen, he is direct, and he can play on both flanks. I really hope that Martinelli is completely banished from the squad now that Eze has arrived as well.
