What's new

As a Pakistani, do you follow or watch the IPL?

Irony is that, it is being claimed that most of Pak fans dont follow IPL but almost all of them debate about its "lack of quality".

I dont think its low quality. None say that its low quality but some fools try to put it equal to international cricket which is mind boggling. Players who play in IPL, PSL dont really care or have any emotional investment. So you cannot expect them to go an extra leg like they would for their national team. How can these fools them somehow think that a domestic league is on par in terms quality to international t20I. Some even bigger fools like Mamoon even go beyond this step to suit their agenda, and claim its even better than bilateral which is a ridiculous claim and only laugh worthy.

Used to watch it crazily before PSL. Now I'm not as much interested. But I still follow the games especially when guys like kohli, Abd, Rohit, pant are playing.

I have nothing against IPL but don't watch it due to Indian atrocities agaisnt Kashmiris and Indian muslims.India is an existential threat to Pakistan so may reasons make sense.

It used to be.

Why is not shown these days?

It is something to do about PSL not being shown in India. Though I think psl is shown in India now. A question to fellow Pakistanis who watch it in Pak. How do you watch it?

tried watching ... I felt big players were there for money and were not putting even half of the effort in accordance with their actual capabilities.

Like Steyn said, IPL is festival cricket where ppl come to enjoy life, party and play some light cricket alongside of it.

Theres no market for IPL in Pakistan. I work in media and marketing.

I only watched the first season of the IPL during 2007-2008 when Pakistani players were playing in it. It was quite entertaining to watch to say the least and the IPL was much better when Pakistani players were included.

I don't watch any league cricket really. If hl are on or if I stumble upon it, I can watch 5 mins.

His TV on to what? No channel has been broadcasting IPL since quite a few years. Stop falsifying.

Most shop keepers get cable tv, cable providers provide sky sports and other sports chanells in Pakistan

Never watched it and outside of PP I don't know a single Pakistani who's ever watched it either.

I only have time for PSL and even then I mostly watch highlights

I occasionally watch bits and pieces but don’t follow it in terms of knowing who’s where in the table. I do feel it goes on far too long, should be wrapped up in a month or so.

I suppose would take more interest if Pakistan’s players were involved but thinking back to the early editions when they were I didn’t watch it then either. Bizarrely I did watch some of the ICL, but then we did end up having a Pakistani team there.

International pensioners league, probably around a dozen world class foreigners & rest are just journeymen & no I haven’t watched a game since the 1st edition, I prefer to watch Netflix

I don't watch it. Cannot follow a league that runs at the directive of a fascist BJP regime

Pensioners league? Lol.

IPL buys best active players from around the world who are at their peak. Think you are mistaking it with some other windowless leagues.

Best active players?
Read that line again and tell me that it doesn't sound silly.
Now don't get me wrong, they may well be the best cricketers. But that's all they are. Cricketers

What I meant is the best players in the world who are at their peak years plays in IPL. You will not see likes of Archer, Cummins, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, Ben Stokes, Butler etc etc playing together in any other league. This is because IPL can afford them and buys them when these great players in the peak of their powress.

For example, Dale Steyn played only in IPL when he was at his absolute peak. Now that he got old and has passed his peak years and no longer can make into IPL...he plays other leagues. 10 years later likes of Stokes & Archer will also do the same and this cycle will continue.

Irrespective of whether Pakistani players are part of ipl or not, I never have & never will, watch this league.

Genuinely Thankful for your concern for Indian Muslims.

May I suggest to have a different perspective.

In the IPL there are plenty of Indian Muslims from humble background who have been made overnight millionaires and see the kind of riches that their counterparts in other countries can only dream of.

If you stop watching it, they may lose sponsorships and brand value.

So please support Indian Muslims and IPL for that reason alone since that seems to be your main criteria.

You do realise we're talking about cricketers right?

I've watched a little bit today and it's absolutely poor quality...
Bowling is pathetic

Thanks for watching. Trust me bowling will get better. Can I understand what exactly is your benchmark for rating bowling quality?

Pace is not the issue

The issue is people say it's better then international T20's..
Second only to T20 World Cup.

Ummm this is not even 2pct that of of international T20's...

As an Indian I barely watch it so not surprising many Pakistanis only have a passing interest.

No, have zero interest in it. The only T20 league I watch is the PSL.

I watch all Pakistan international games, the PSL, parts of the domestic season (Quaid e Azam trophy, National T20). I've been watching the various incarnations of the national T20 tournament for many years. Occasionally catch highlights of any interesting international series like the Ashes.

Almost no cable operator provides sky sports in Pakistan. Maybe star sports but that too in limited areas.

This is an aside to the thread- I'm an Indian and a few days ago I found myself watching the Pak SA game, instead of the IPL opener.

In short, I would prefer any international game over the IPL which I barely watch anyway.

But I tend to watch the IPL final. Apart from that I doubt I've put in one hour of my viewing time through an entire season for all IPL games combined.

But I've no doubt that a lot of Indian fans, if not the majority, are avid IPL watchers, and passionate about it.

Noooooooooooooo..........if Pakistan is playing i watch and follow my green team from ball ist to last ball of second inning...
And in case pakistan is not playing i watch their previous matches..... particularly Champions trophy 2017 ...

Can you pls elaborate what you mean by that?

I think you will agree sports should be kept away from politics/cast but i feel cricket in India is also hijacked by religious/cast oppression. Brutal criminal policy in Kashmir & non of the so called celebrity (who don't shy away from giving human rights lecture tweets online) cares. Freedom of speech is not allowed even for liberal Hindus. (Ashoka University recent example)

I'm Indian. I wouldn't follow IPL, its like my detox, my time off cricket. Sorry, but international cricket has its charms for me, IPL doesn't. But yes, I might tune in for about 5 minutes a week if I had nothing else to do.
When the IPL is on, my main prayers is - dudes like jazzboom, ashwin, vk, hitman, gill etc donot get burnt out for something much more important like the WTC finals or the England series coming up.
But I also feel IPL would be a good running ground for the prev injured guys like Jads, shami, KL , good to hone up their skills.
But sorry, I'd rather wake up at an ungodly hour to watch the WC finals of whoever playing whoever or a fantastic test series even if it does not involve India, as compared to an IPL match.

I don't watch the full matches. Watch specifically young players and how they perform. For example I will check how Shaw and Pant play in a T20 match as that potentially means we have some great prospects lined up but have least interest in watching Rahane or Dhawan as that is not their strong areas. Any runs by them does not help the national team as they are tried and tested and their limitation with respect to modern T20 internationals are well known.

Likewise I was amazed to see Samad bat yesterday and will keep an eye on his batting but have no intention to watch Pandey or Shankar bat as they again are known entities and will never be international standard as far as T20s are concerned.

To be brutally honest, i haven't followed or watched IPL for more than a decade now.

8 years for me. Ever since PSL started. I'm not compelled to watch any other league really other than a few matches where some of my favorite Pakistani players are playing.

IPL and the T20 World Cup are the highest forms of T20 cricket in the game. If you don’t watch IPL it is your loss.
u cant compare T20 WC with IPL there is a huge difference of audience between these two.

Yes. People who want to watch Pakistan players will watch the T20 WC. That's a huge audience. Maybe some of them will watch the IPL, but a lot of them would have lost interest once their own players weren't involved.

That is just natural, it is the same for PSL. It is a successful product, but would obviously attract a lot more attention if Indian players were taking part.

I think IPL was okay from 2008 till about 2013-2014. After that, it became cringy.

Anyway, I am not a fan of T20.

No, I have got no desire to watch a league that doesn’t feature any Pakistani players. I have got zero connection to any of the teams.

The only league I watch is PSL.

IPL and the T20 World Cup are the only two T20 competitions where the best contemporary players in the world play.
Exactly. I hate lot of things about IPL but I love the fact that almost all the best players play here. I also enjoy the fact players also playing against their countrymen like Faf against Rabada, Buttler against Wood, Rohit against Kuldeep and so on. It brings lot of interesting subplots to the fore.

Jaiswal failed miserably against the best bowlers in his first 2 seasons .He got a reality check and worked on his hitting and technique as he used to struggle against boult and express pace.Even nasir Hussain said stokes would never have got the pressure absorbing skills to perform in the wc finals without ipl.

Even as an Indian, i dont watch IPL. Maybe the highlights of some new talent.

Pakistan Players would have made IPL more interesting. As of now, I only watch highlights if I have to otherwise no interest.

I don’t watch all the games but yeah I do watch mostly highlights of the IPL games and I really enjoy it.

I watched the first five or six seasons of the tournament and loved everything about it. The crowds, the stunning and well maintained cricket grounds, the world class commentators, and, of course, the best players from around the globe made it a fantastic experience. But at some point, I started to lose interest. I can’t pinpoint exactly when, but it was around the time when teams began chasing improbable targets, making bowlers seem almost irrelevant. The tournament started favoring batsmen heavily, and I struggled to stay engaged.

I found myself wondering why I stopped watching, and realized it wasn’t just the high scoring games. There were several factors that contributed to my diminishing interest:

1 - Length of the Tournament

The tournament’s two month span is hard to keep up with, especially when juggling work and other responsibilities. Following matches for such an extended period isn’t practical for me.

2 - High-Scoring Matches

It felt like bowlers were reduced to mere bowling machines, placed to help batsmen practice hitting sixes and fours. The excitement of a balanced contest between bat and ball was missing, and I didn’t enjoy watching matches where bowlers had little to no impact.

3 - Questioning the Format’s Credibility

I struggled to respect the format, as players became superstars based solely on their T20 performances, while lacking the skills necessary for the more traditional formats of the game.

Growing up, I loved India’s team, and the rivalry with Pakistan never really affected me. I supported India as my second favorite team after Pakistan throughout the ’90s. Despite their struggles back then, I found them relatable because they looked like us, spoke the same language, and we shared a cultural connection, including Bollywood movies (though I’ve watched only a handful in the last decade since they don’t seem to make good films anymore).

Nowadays, I only tune in for the playoffs or when Dhoni’s team is playing. I’ve largely lost interest in the league, perhaps because there’s too much T20 cricket everywhere now. It feels like I’ve had an overdose of this format, and it no longer feels like real cricket to me. Maybe someday my interest in the IPL will return and I will start following it as closely as I used to. With India being the heart of cricket these days, the atmosphere there is just incredible and the energy of the crowd is truly unmatched.

As a cricket player, I made a conscious decision early on to stay away from T20 cricket. When my club introduced a T20 team in the division back then, I opted to continue playing in the 40 and 50 over formats. I believed that sticking to the longer formats would benefit my game and help me maintain my fitness levels, while the shorter format might compromise my skills.

To this day, I have never played a T20 match. I have remained committed to the formats that demand more endurance, strategy, and technique, believing they contribute more to my growth as a cricketer. I am 43 now and still believe that I have 3 to 4 years of cricket left in me. I may have played T20 if there was money involved, but in our leagues only International level players get paid and the imports who come from other countries to play in our league.

I have boycotted the IPL since inception. Alhamdulilah and God is my witness, I have never watched an IPL match in my life. I have seen some social media clips but that’s about it.

I don't like T20. So, I don't like IPL by default.

Even if I liked T20, I probably would've still disliked IPL.

I did watch a lot of IPL matches in which Pakistani players were playing. As soon as Pakistani players were banned, I totally stopped watching IPL.... 100%.

They don't watch but know everything about players performance in IPL .

:kp
Exactly.. Inf Complex I guess. I watch PSL highlights whenever its on. Dont know why guys have to be ashamed. There are more player sledges and fights in PSL compared to IPL. Am surprised though that they dont it to the international arena where they do a lot of bhaichara brotherhood ..

I only watched it for Pakistani players. I guess it was the first season. Since then I just look away whenever it’s on. I don’t really follow the lankan or Caribbean leagues to see how Pakistani players are doing but if they were in Ipl I would definitely watch it more.

I don't watch it but have caught glimpses.

I've not been too interested because of the lack of Pakistani players and the overly batting friendly wickets.

I generally only follow PSL at initial and end stages. T20 tournaments last too long overall.

I don't blame any Pakistanis for not watching IPL. If my Indian cricketers gets banned in a specific T20 league, I will not watch it as well. I don't watch any other T20 league apart from IPL anyway as there are too many of them.

If you are a fan of T20 cricket and you don’t watch the IPL then you are at loss, because the IPL and the T20 WC are the only to platforms where the best active T20 players play.

Ugh...that was not the answer he was expecting :viru :inti
