The 2018 Asian Games, officially known as the 18th Asian Games and also known as Jakarta Palembang 2018, is a pan-Asian multi-sport event scheduled to be held from 18 August to 2 September 2018 in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

For the first time, the Asian Games are being co-hosted in two cities; the Indonesian capital of Jakarta (which is hosting the Games for the first time since 1962), and Palembang, the capital of the South Sumatra province. Events will be held in and around the two cities, including venues in Bandung and province of West Java and Banten. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Games will be held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.

Also for the first time, eSports and canoe polo will be contested as a demonstration sports. eSports will be a medal event at the 2022 Asian Games.

KARACHI: As Pakistan Hockey team reaches Indonesia for the Asian Games, the head coach Roelant Oltmans says players now have their roles and positions clear and will go for the kill in all of their matches.

The silver medallist team of the 2014 Asian Games, where they lost the final against arch-rivals India by 4-2 in a penalty shootout after ending the match 1-1 after full time, is all firing on all engines to make it to this year’s final, en route a gold.

And Oltmans, while talking about the team’s preparation, told The Express Tribune that the when he joined, the players did not have clearly defined roles to play in the team.
“It was really surprising for me that the team, which won silver at the Asian Games and Champions Trophy were not clear about their playing positions. They knew which position to play on, but were not aware about the role they had to play in that position,” he explained.

“I worked with them, starting from the basics and then gave them well-defined roles. The senior players picked up instantly, while the young lot took some time to understand the concept. However, they are all clear now about where they have to be and when,” he added.

He further commented on the fitness of the players, saying it was good but up to the standards of international hockey. “We have worked on their fitness too and now they are in a much better shape, we are hoping to see a better show from them,” he said.

Talking about weak areas of the team, Oltmans said team is in complete sync at the moment. “They were weak in defines which is why the block rate was low, whereas finishing was not up to the mark, however, they’ve improved in both areas which will be visible during the matches,” he said.

“Hockey is all about coordination, as soon as you misplace a pass, the next second ball is in other team’s possession. But now they know how to carry the ball forward smoothly and finish their move,” he added.

Oltmans also kept his team’s goal realistic saying they would be hoping to finish at the least on the second position. “We will be trying to finish at the best position we can. Pakistan are the silver medallist in Asian Games and we are aiming for gold but we have to be realistic. Even if they finish on the second position, that would be good enough performance from them,” he said. “But obviously every team is trying to finish on top and so are we, so let’s hope or the best and see what happens at the Games.”

Pakistan will begin their Asian Games journey with the first match against Thailand on August 20, followed by the game against Oman on August 22, Kazakhstan on August 24, Malaysia August 26, and Bangladesh on August 28 in their pool B.

Meanwhile, pool A comprises of India, South Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong and Indonesia. The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the semi-finals to be played on August 30 before the winners compete in the final on September 1.
 
JAKARTA: The torch for the 18th Asian Games reached Indonesia's capital Jakarta on Wednesday (Aug 15), ending a month-long journey across the Southeast Asian archipelago nation.

It was welcomed in style by marching bands, traditional dances and concerts, after starting its journey in the host country's cultural centre Yogyakarta on July 17.

The flame was lit in India's capital New Delhi, which hosted the first Asian Games in 1951.

Organisers hope the torch relay will attract at least one million spectators across the sprawling Indonesian capital.

Some 10,000 torchbearers, including Indonesian badminton legends Rudy Hartono, Icuk Sugiarto and Ricky Subagja, will be taking part in the relay.

The torch is set to arrive on Saturday at the Gelora Bung Karno stadium for the Games' opening ceremonies, ending its 18,000km journey across 54 cities.

Indonesia is hosting some 11,000 athletes and 5,000 officials from 45 Asian countries for the Aug 18 to Sep 2 event.

JAKARTA: For size, the Asian Games are enormous. They feature about 11,500 athletes, which is about 1,000 more than a typical Summer Olympics.

For diversity, they offer many sports that are unseen at the Olympics but native to Asia. How about the Indian sport of kabaddi, or kurash, a traditional martial art from Uzbekistan, or pencak silat, an Indonesian martial art? Esports will also get a look as a demonstration sport, and jet ski is on the schedule The games, which open Saturday and run through Sept. 2, also showcase sports climbing and skateboarding, two events being added to the schedule for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

And get ready for this there’s competition in contract bridge, which should attract a slightly older demographic than gymnastics or swimming. The oldest card player is reported to be 81.

“We have really worked hard to prepare this,” Eris Herryanto, the secretary general of the local organizing committee, told The Associated Press. “I think we are ready.” Jakarta has had less than the normal amount of time to prepare. It was selected four years ago after Vietnam, the original host, pulled out because of financial problems. There are sure to be problems as Indonesia tries to show it could hold even larger events. But there’s also gratitude from the Olympic Council of Asia which oversees sports in the region for stepping in.

Jakarta is famous for some of the world’s worst traffic jams, with a river of swerving motorbikes trying to beat the congestion. Getting athletes to venues on time is sure to be challenging. Some schools along transportation routes have been closed, and the city is also using an odd-even license plate scheme to reduce traffic.

But no one is being asked to stay home. Just the opposite.

“We are asking that people come to see the Asian Games, but please come to see them using public transportation,” Herryanto said, calling this a chance to change habits and a possible “legacy” of the quadrennial event.

Security will be heavy. Organizers say 100,000 police and military will be on guard with another 100,000 in reserve.

Indonesia is certainly large enough to think of itself as an Olympic country. With 260 million people, it’s the world’s fourth-most populous nation after China, India and the United States. It’s comprised of about 13,500 islands the government says 922 are permanently occupied that stretch about 5,100 kilometers (3,200 miles), which is greater than the distance from east to west in the continental United States.

Despite its quirky qualities, the Asian Games are also a serious proving ground for powerful teams from China, Japan and South Korea, and a chance for smaller nations to win medals that are out of reach at the Olympics.

Forty-five nations are entered from Afghanistan, Bahrain and Bangladesh to Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen.

Singapore, one of the smallest nations, has one of the biggest names in swimmer Joseph Schooling, an Olympic gold medalist who defeated Michael Phelps in the 100 butterfly two years ago in Rio de Janeiro.

China has the largest delegation with 845 athletes. But it’s a young team. It includes only 214 who have been in previous Olympics or Asian Games, and only 19 Olympic gold medalists. The most famous is three-time Olympic gold-medal swimmer Sun Yang.

South Korea and Japan are not far behind.

South Korea has 807 athletes, a number that includes 38 North Korean athletes. The Koreas are entering several combined teams, following up on a combined team in women’s hockey at this year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Japan has traveled with 768 athletes, which is more than double the size of the team it sent to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. That reflects the size of the Asian Games, and Japan’s push to win 30 gold medals in two years in Tokyo.

JAKARTA: Pakistan hockey team captain Mohammad Rizwan Senior will lead national contingent as the flag-bearer at the Asian Games opening ceremony which will be held at the Glora Bung Carno Stadium here on Saturday.

Left-in Rizwan Senior has been part of the national team since 2011 and has scored 39 international goals. He was part of the national team which won the gold medal in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzou, China as well as the as the team which bagged silver medal in the Asian Games held in the Korean city of Incheon in 2014.

According to information received, the head of the Indonesia’s Asian Games Organising Committee, Erick Thohir will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony on Saturday.

Meanwhile, President Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Gen (r) Arif Hasan met with Pakistan hockey team players, manager Hasan Sardar and Dutch coach Roelant Oltmans here in the athletes’ village on Friday and expressed confidence about their good show in the Games.

“Our hockey team has shown marked improvement in the recent months and hopefully will do well at the mega event here,” said Arif.

Manager Hasan, a former Olympian and hockey legend, also informed the POA chief that the players are training hard for the matches and defeated Japan in the practice match the other day which has boosted their morale.

“We will do our best to give some good news to the nation Inshallah,” he added.

Pakistan’s Chef de Mission Aqil Shah, POA secretary general Khalid Mahmood and POA vice president Chaudhry Yaqoob were also present on the occasion.

Two different things. As a nation, India can afford a lot, but the extent of poverty stays roughly the same in all of the subcontinent.

A more relevant and key differentiator here is the sports budget. India allocated $314 million for sports in 2017, while Pakistan's allocation was $246 million. Wanna guess how much China spends?

North and South Korea marched together in a stirring display of unity as the Asian Games, one of the world's biggest sports events, opened in a blaze of colour in Jakarta on Saturday.

South Korean women's basketball player Lim Yung-hui and North Korean footballer Ju Kyong-chol jointly held the Korean Unification flag aloft as they led the athletes out to an ovation from the packed crowd.

It is the second such symbolic gesture this year by the two Koreas, who also walked together at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics opening ceremony — an event that heralded an unprecedented warming of ties.

The North and South, still technically at war, are joining forces in women's basketball, canoeing and rowing during the 40-sport, two-week regional Olympics in the Indonesian capital and Palembang, a port city on Sumatra island.

South Korean Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon and North Korean Deputy Prime Minister Ri Ryong-nam, watching from the VIP seats, rose together holding hands and beaming as the Korean athletes marched.

The ceremony opened with a skit purportedly showing President Joko Widodo doing stunts on a motorbike in Jakarta's streets before riding into the Gelora Bung Karno stadium, to roars from the crowd.

About 1,500 dancers in traditional dress then performed a tightly choreographed routine before Afghanistan led the athletes' parade into the stadium.

There were huge cheers when the two Koreas, whose athletes together number about 1,000, marched into the stadium together wearing pristine white and blue uniforms.

'You can feel proud'
Widodo was then seen dancing in his seat as Indonesian singer Via Vallen took to the stage, before the stadium fell silent to honour the victims of the recent Lombok earthquake.

“You can feel proud of your home country Indonesia,” said Sheikh Ahmed Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, president of the Olympic Council of Asia, before Widodo declared the Games open.

Indonesian badminton great Susi Susanti, the women's singles Olympic champion in 1992, lit the Games cauldron and the ceremony closed with a noisy music performance and spectacular fireworks.

It provided a vibrant start to the Games, whose build-up has been dogged by logistical headaches and security fears after Indonesia suffered its deadliest terror attack in a decade in May.

The sprawling archipelago has also been grappling with its latest earthquake disaster after strong tremors in Lombok, an eastern island, left more than 400 people dead.

Indonesia, a country of about 270 million, stepped in to host the Games at short notice after Vietnam pulled out, citing the event's eye-watering costs.

Indonesia has a poor track record in hosting multi-sports events — the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang suffered serious corruption problems and delays, and two people died in a stadium stampede.

Rights group Amnesty International said at least 31 people were killed in a “shoot first and ask questions later” police crackdown on petty crime.

But officials say all venues are ready for competition and tournament-related problems so far have been relatively minor, from the ticket website crashing to misspelt words on signs.

About 18,000 athletes and officials from 45 Asian countries will be at the Asiad, organisers said, looking to make their mark across a range of sports from swimming to sepak takraw and bridge.

The Asian Games encompass nearly the full Olympic programme and are considered the pinnacle by many participating nations, for whom Olympic success often proves elusive.

Pakistan start Asian Games hockey campaign on winning note

Pakistan kicked-off their Asian Games hockey campaign on a winning note with a 2-0 win over Japan in a pre-tournament friendly at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, Jakarta.

Men in Green are now in line to play their first Pool B match against Thailand on August 20, which will be followed by matches against Oman on August 20, Indonesia on August 24, Malaysia on August 26 and Bangladesh on August 28.

The high-octane clash against India is possible in the semis or the final, which will take place on August 30 and September 1, respectively.

Pakistan win first football match in Asian Games after 44 years

Pakistan national football team got its first victory in Asian Games after 44 years after defeating Nepal by 2-1 on Sunday.

According to media reports, Muhammad Bilal and captain Saddam Hussain scored one goal each.

In the first match on August 14, Vietnam beat Pakistan in its first match of Asian Games, underway in Jakarta. The green shirts were defeated by a clear margin of 3-0 in the opener.

Pakistan football team left for Jakarta on August 12, to take part in the games. Saddam Hussain is leading the 22-player team while Saqib Hanif has been appointed as the vice-captain.

Pakistan is participating in an international event after a gap of three years. Before departure, Coach José Antonio Nogueira stated that the national team has to perform well as the competition will be tough.

He hoped that the team will get good results after playing well

Handball results
Pakistan lost both of their group stage matches to Japan and Korea and will be in the classification round now they will go on to play India in that round on the 24th of August

For Pakistan to advance in the football tournament at Asian games they need the following results

North Korea will have to draw or lose to Saudi Arabia

Myanmar will have to draw or lose to Iran

Kyrgyzstan will have to draw or lose to South Korea their is two spots left for the top 3rd place team to advance. If Pakistan is to advance I think I can be wrong they would go on to play Uzbekistan

On a side note Congratz to Bangladesh team who beat Qatar 1-0 on a injury time goal
 
Newly elected Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan promised “tabdeeli” (change) during his intense election campaign and its cash-strapped athletes are now heavily relying on the former cricketer to revive the struggling sport scene in the country.

Olympic sports in Pakistan have been facing acute shortage of funds and recently its hockey team threatened to pull out of the ongoing Asian Games due to non-payment of daily allowances.

The country’s tennis team arrived here only a day before the competition and that too without a captain and coach. The shooters, too, are not able to give their best due to lack of funds.

“The expectations are definitely high from Imran Khan. I have voted only for the second time in my life. He has been a champion sportsperson. He knows what it takes to be a successful sportsperson,” Pakistan tennis veteran Aqil Khan told PTI before a practice session here.

“I am confident he will do good for Pakistan sport but then he has so many other pressing issues to deal with. We will have to wait and see.”

Since there is no coach travelling with the team, the 38-year-old is doubling up as player and mentor to junior players in the eight-member team.

“I am also attending official meetings (he laughs) but it is okay. It is an honour to serve Pakistan,” said the Karachi-based Aqil who stopped playing on ATP tour long time ago.

“It is too expensive. You need a lot of money for travel, need to have a personal coach. I have a government job back home (electricity board WAPDA). I feel content,” added Aqil, who frequently played ITF tournament in India and also competed at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

The other members of the tennis team are much younger — Muhammad Abid and Muzammil Murtaza. They don’t get funds from their federation for training and competition overseas and rely only on personal sponsorship.

Abid wants to come to India to play ITF events but is facing visa issues.

“They said you only get diplomatic visa for India. We don’t know who to approach. We have met Indian players. They came to play in Pakistan last year and we also want to go and play there. Hope something can be done,” said Abid.

He also has high hopes from World Cup winning captain Imran Khan.

“I am (a) huge fan of Imran Khan. Inshallah, he will take the country forward. People have high expectations from him.”

Rifle shooters Minhal Sohail and Zeeshan Ul Shakir Farid want the new prime minister to support their ailing sport. In the mixed team rifle event, they failed to qualify, finishing 19th out of 22 pairs.

“I hear the Indian shooting budget is close to Rs 200 crore. Our federation gets only Rs 18 lakh for the entire year. We only train in Pakistan, you have so many foreign coaches. That is why you see Indian shooters doing well at the highest level. With Imran Khan coming to power, we can only hope for the better,” said Farid, who has also played in a World Cup.

Minhal, who became the first Pakistan women shooter to compete at the Olympics with the Rio Games, is hopeful of change too.

“We are positive. He will change Pakistan and Pakistan sport also,” the 23-year-old said.

That's like comparing a rickshaw wala ka bacha to a child from affluent middle-class. Our sports budget is peanuts, and results will be proportionate.

Top 3 are always China, Japan and South Korea. Rest of the nations can fight for 4th spot, it depends on who has the best conversion rate. India has a great chance to finish 4th in overall medals tally but it remains to be seen the distribution because number of golds determines the final rank, Asian Games is much tougher than Commonwealth Games. Good luck to all the athletes, especially from South Asia.
 
Bangladesh beat Qatar 1-0 in the Asian Games football today. That has to be one of the most impressive result by a South Asian football side. Seems like the Bengalis are focused on football now, instead of cricket.
 
Pakistan kicked off its men's Kabbadi campaign with a victory over Malasiya by a score of 62-17 their next game will be Agaisnt Iran ( August 20th) our men's hockey team will kick start their campaign as well as of August the 20th when they will take on Thailand. Pakistan men's volleyball team will be in action as they will take on Mongolia as well.

Tennis action as well as round of 32 men's single / men's doubles and women's doubles Pakistani tennis players will be in action 20th of August as well

JAKARTA: Pakistan needs to ditch its traditional approach of training wrestlers on mud floors if it is to excel at international level, national coach Muhammad Anwar told AFP on Sunday.

Anwar was speaking at the Asian Games in Jakarta, where two of Pakistan’s three wrestlers lost in the first round on the opening day of competition.

Pakistan has done “zero work” to help its wrestlers, Anwar said, leaving it trailing its competitors — notably arch-rival India, which switched to training on mats long ago.

“India has done a lot of work on wrestling. It’s a big country with lot of funds. While Pakistan has done zero work for sports and wrestling,” the former Olympic wrestler said.

“After partition in 1947 we were way ahead of India in wrestling and our domination continued till 1952. But after that wrestling was fought on mats and India took to it while Pakistan couldn’t.”

Inam Butt became Pakistan’s latest wrestling sensation after winning the country’s only gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in April.

However Butt, who won in the 86kg category on the Gold Coast, is one of just a few Pakistani wrestlers to make their mark on the international stage.

“Wrestling has not been promoted well in Pakistan and as a result has lagged behind,” Rahman said, adding that Pakistan could do with a star like India’s two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar.

“Sushil is a very good player but I personally take inspiration from all the Russian wrestlers who are a name in themselves. They have a knack of producing world champions,” Rehman said with a smile.

JAKARTA: Pakistan were off to a flying start at the Asian Games Hockey with a 10-0 win over Thailand on Monday.

The opening hockey game, played at Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Sports Complex in Jakarta, Indonesia, was dominated by Pakistan, who have won the tournament a record eight times.

Atiq Arshad shone with a hat-trick, while his brother Tauseeq Arshad, and Mohammad Irfan and Abu Bakr all scored twice. Mubashar Ali was the other scorer.

It was the last minute of the first quarter that Tauseeq Arshad converted a penalty corner. Three more goals were added in the second quarter and Pakistan led by 4-0 at the half time.

The Green Shirts found the target six times in the second half to complete the tally.

Pakistan next play Oman on Wednesday.

Two Gold so far, both at wrestling. Great story in Phogat's case, lost to the same opponent at the Olympics because of leg cramps, and now beats her to become first Indian woman to win Asian Games Wrestling Gold. :bow:

We should demand for Gilli Danda and Gotiyan to be included in Asian games.

May be we can win Gold easily before Chinese and Japs master Gilli Danda. :yk

To be honest, most of the sports in these Games and Olympics are White man's Gilli Danda and Gotiyan that most of us haven't even heard of. Chinese have invested heavily in catching up, while we are still a decade or two away from getting there.
 
Cricket was included in the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games but on both occasions BCCI refused to send a team and thus the Sport had to be dropped for the lack of eyeballs.

2 Gold Medals on offer there. We are not even willing to promote the Sport in which we excel while East Asian keeps promoting martial arts and winning medals in them.

No one is talking about Pakistan the post was about an upset. I am a fan of underdog teams and it just happened to be the Korea beat the mighty India granted it was Indias first lost but to be fair you would suspect Iran or Pakistan to do this not Korea

East Asians have too much of an higher IQ/work ethics for us to compete. They're not ethnic Jews but not far. Look at how countries influenced by Confucian-Sinic civilization have progressed in all fields, when they were literally all behind South Asian ones in the 40s.

When they're given Western standards opportunities they even outshine the WASPs in the US : there was some science contest recently and the media high-lightened how 90% of the names sounded Chinese, or in arts, for instance the latest Chopin competition in piano - the best known in the field -, out of the 5 winner, the first place went to a Korean, and the 2 other Americans were children of Chinese migrants as well.

That's how they dominate sports as well : they take 1000s of promising children in intense training programs, who then grow up to give them medals. That's how they operated during their Olympic isolation. They're doing the same now in arts as well : the Chinese children learning to play the piano - not talking of the violin, traditional instru like the guzheng, etc - are more numerous than the total population of Australia.

It's crazy when you know that a single village, Dafen, produced 60% of the world's paintings at one point, imitating the Van Gogh's and De Vinci's for fun - even imitation is a talent, and like the Japanese, after the imitation phase comes the innovation one.

We can't compete with them even if we were 100x more numerous.

Regardless of result India is still favorite and next in line to be favorite would not be Pakistan but rather Iran

True, they don't have the PR of Sikhs or the intellectual "persona" of Bengalis or South Indians but they not only get lot of medals also are highly represented in the Army.

Still socially very behind on comparison,but when given right system they do really well.

And what's even more astonishing is their girls leading the pack shoulder to shoulder with males.
Remember it's the same Haryanvi Jat society which has been infamous for its numerous girl child infanticide incidents having one of the lowest sex ratios in the country and which has been riddled by social problems such as Khap Panchayats etc.
Despite that, the increasing no of Women athletes from their community is not only commendable but a lesson for certain other 'Royal castes' of India who prefer to keep their women in purdah at home, not allowing them to venture outside for work or other interests.

Pakistan's best ever show @ Asiad in 1978 when they grabbed 4 GOLD

Can both the nations do better this time!
 
4 Wushu medals confirmed for India, and thats where it will end most probably as it is already an overachievement for us in this sport!

Pakistan's best bet is field hockey to win a GOLD/ SILVER.
