What's new

Asian Games 2018 : 18th August - 2nd September

The thing I don’t understand is- We have been doing pretty good in Commonwealth Games from last few editions and remain in top 3-4 . But struggle massively in Asian games. Why is that?

Is the competition level tougher in Asian Games compared to CG? Or participants don’t take CG seriously?

In athletics, our competition here is China, Japan, Korea and African imports from the gulf. That takes away many of our medals. What's encouraging though is our athletes performing more or less at the same level now, so a lot of medals going or not going our way is a matter of luck.

Achery, shooting, badminton, wrestling, weight-lifting, and boxing too falls victim to these East Asians, and there is also an added Iranian pressure that competes directly against some of our strengths. While we are very good at these events, East Asians prove to be just a little bit better.

Abbas loses bronze medal fight in controversial fashion

KARACHI : Pakistan’s former karatedo Asian Champion and US Open Champion Saadi Abbas’ dream came crashing down as the referee at the Asian Games declared his opponent Jordan’s Bash Al Najjar as the winner just seconds before the -75kg bronze medal fight ended in Jakarta on Monday.

According to Abbas, the referee stopped the match for few seconds, consulted an official who was observing and declared Al Najjar the winner when there were just four seconds left for the fight to end, and he was winning 5-2.

“It was just that close for me to finally win an Asian Games medal,” Abbas told The Express Tribune. “The decision is controversial. I was leading, I was playing despite my knee injury that I picked in the quarter-final against the Malaysian athlete. It is something beyond me that the referee just stopped the fight, and took seconds to come back just to declare Al Najjar as the winner.”

Abbas had to be treated immediately for his knee injury after the event ended; he tore a knee ligament. But that is not what is upsetting him.

“I was dreaming of this moment for 12 years,” said Abbas. “I had prepared a lot, I think I’ve been playing the best I ever had but I twisted my right foot during my quarter-final match and I knew it was bad at the moment, but I sprayed the knee and went back. I just didn’t want to miss this, but who knew that all that pain would lead me nowhere. It is unfair.”

Abbas defeated the Malaysian karateka 10-5, but lost in the semi-final to Saudi Arabia’s Raef Adel Turkistani 4-2 and went on to play for the bronze medal.

“I was in pain, in discomfort, the referees knew it too, they told me that if I limp once they’ll take me out. I was determined not to limp, I didn’t but still this result is shocking, even Al-Najjar seemed surprised with it,” said Abbas.

On the other hand, former South Asian karate champion Kulsoom Hazara also lost in the quarter-final.

Last week, Nargis became the first Pakistani to win a karate medal at the Asian Games, and Abbas believes that it was a breakthrough event for him.

“I saw Nargis take that medal, and I felt I took that medal,” he said. “It was a proud moment for me too. She is an inspiration. I was hoping I could win that medal this time, but, it is not to be, I will need all the prayers from the nation.”

But the Pakistan Karate Federation (PKF) cannot file a complaint, and Abbas is now just holding his heart, hoping to come back soon.

“The doctors have told me that the ligament isn’t broken but torn, now I will be getting a lot of injections, if it had broken then there would’ve been a surgery,” said Abbas.

The PKF secretary Andleeb Sandhu said that everyone agrees that it is a controversial decision and Abbas was wronged but the World karate Federation does not have any space for protests to be lodged.

“We all saw it, it was shocking, and Abbas is badly hurt in the foot,” said Andleeb. “But at this time we can’t do much, there is no place for us to register a protest.”

CWG is below far tournament, doesn't have much value in world of sports.

In a very good game of volleyball Pakistan has defeated its rival India in the quarterfinals and has advance to semi finals :)

India can't compete again us. Too good. Too strong. Too quick. Too slick.

I take it this is one of the sports India doesn't invest too much time/money in?

We dont invest money in any of the sports .
Anyway our Volleyball team has regressed in last few years , Pak looked good though .

Pakistan were a bit better than India, though this was the quarters to decide 7 to 12 position, not a medal position.

I realized that after it wasn't for a medal position but still a good win and Pakistan won 3-1 in sets so I wouldn't say a bit better I would say we're better lol

9 GOLD and 17 SILVER for India so far!

Brave effort considering Indonesia has drafted in so many events in this edition to suit them like pencack silat, para gliding, skating, jetski, ju jitsu, kurash, roller skate, skate board, sambo, climbing, soft tennis.

silver in 4*400 m relay and i think thats our 7th in Athletics ? and three golds . it could have all been gold :(

3 Golds, 8 Silvers. Should stop complaining about the imports. If you want to compete, you should compete with the best.

50th medal for India in the games with that 4x400 mts silver :)

9 GOLD and 19 SILVER so far... poor conversion rate to GOLD but definite improvement in all events except Kabaddi, Boxing.

Women's heptathlon update : Indians in 2nd and 3rd spots after todays events. Can expect medals from this event in the next 2 days.

3 Golds, 8 Silvers. Should stop complaining about the imports. If you want to compete, you should compete with the best.

That's still better compared to including sports like -

pencack silat, para gliding, skating, jetski, ju jitsu, kurash, roller skate, skate board, sambo, climbing, soft tennis

for winning medals by Indonesia, Thailand, MAS :faceplam:

I guess some of the shooting events we won in last games were excluded this time.

Pakistan hockey team on Tuesday beat Bangladesh 5-0 in their last Pool B match of the ongoing Asian Games to enter the semi-finals as the top team from their group in Jakarta.

For Pakistan, Mohammad Atiq and Mubashar Ali scored a brace, while Ali Shan contributed a single goal.

India are the top team in Pool A with five wins from as many matches. They will now face second-placed Malaysia from Pool B.

Meanwhile, Pakistan will face the winner of the South Korea-Japan match in the semi-finals.

A marquee final between arch-rivals Pakistan and India is on the cards if both teams beat their respective opponents in the semis on August 30.

The final of the Asian Games hockey event will be played on September 1.

We will reach finals but India will beat us. They have a very good team now.

Japan beat Korea by a score of 3-2, in men field hockey, thus they will play Pakistan on August 30th in the semi finals. India will take on Malaysia in semi finals as well. If all goes well Pakistan vs India will be on the cards for the finals.

Its a pity that Pakistan is battling for 7th-12th place in volleyball . Volleyball is the third most popular sport in Pakistan and I am sure that with little investment and a professional set-up, we can participate in Olympics.

Some good signs for Pakistan in the last 2 days :

Javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem bettered his national record and got a surprise medal.

Nooh Dastagir butt also improved his national record and finished 5th in +105 KG Weightlifting.

Pakistan volleyball team beating India after a LONG time which is a very good result and shows that if given the right tools these guys can improve considerably (a couple of years ago we were loosing to absolute nobodies in volleyball but since theyve hired the irani coach the performances have improved significantly, from winning the bronze for the first time at the asian club champs to performing much better here, hopefully the positive results keep on)

Field Hockey team topping their group (Same as volleyball, since the addition of the dutch coach weve gone from loosing to india, canada by 6-7 goals to atleast competing in these matches now).

And finally Saadi Abbas who missed the medal in very controversial circumstances...having won his last 32,16 and q final matches and loosing the semi in a close fight he was leading the bronze medal fight 5--2 with seconds remaining when the ref stopped the fight and awarded the fight to his opponent because of an injury to saadi that he had received during his q.final match. There were 4 seconds left and saadi was still competing when this happened and its really sad to see him miss the medal this way.

Even though medal wise these games are probably amongst our worst ever...for me this has to be one of the better asian games weve had since 1998 looking at the performances and i hope these young athletes are given the respect and training that they deserve so that they can finally start winning big events.

3 Golds, 8 Silvers. Should stop complaining about the imports. If you want to compete, you should compete with the best.

I have no complains about the competition, but there are other global events for that. Its unfair on Asian athletes, some of these guys deserved to be tagged as the best in the continent, it's unfair on guys in the past who created records only to be broken by some African dude bought by a rich sheik.
Forget India's tally, take Dutee chand for eg. Her gender was questioned, banned from competing, comes back to be crowned as Asian champion.. almost. A silver is still good, but a gold would have been a headline and I think she deserved it.
I can understand one or two athletes migrating, but not like this.

Lol China closing on a century of gold medals, they have probably already achieved it as I type.

GOLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD #10. Arpinder Singh in Triple Jump. This is our best ever performance in Athletics. Athletes have won medals in variety of Sports. 4 GOLDS in Athletics.

Gold in triple jump after 48 years for India.

10 GOLD, 19 SILVER even without a single GOLD in kabaddi is awesome!

GOLD #11 . Swapna Barman in Heptathlon. She did it with a broken Jaw. It broke during Shot Put but she still continued and now has Gold Medal to show for it.:bow:

India now has 5 Golds in Athletics.

Does anyone else feel ranking based on only greater number of GOLD medals won is a bit unfair? I mean Bahrain at #11 has 18 medals whereas Kazakhstan with 50 medals is at #12.

I feel as though there should be points system based on Medals won.
1 GOLD = 40 points
1 SILVER = 20 Points
1 BRONZE = 10 Points

And then given rank based on points won.

No, no of gold is fine, but Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi and UAE are cheating with African imports. I am sure they don't have citizenship either. It's worse than what Eng does in Cricket with Zim/Saffer/Irish/ Kiwi/Scottish players.

India will take on Japan in women's hockey finals. China vs Korea will play out for bronze.

Shame on Indonesia, they have won 13 gold in some indigenous sport called pencak silat, shows how low someone can stoop to be in top 5 @ home

This country has never won > 4 gold in any asian games so far but now with the inclusion of all these stupid sports they are finishing 4th in table.

Some form of martial art which only 2/ 3 countries play seriously, they have also introduced roller skates, skate boarding, climbing, etc.. seriously!

When the games come to India we should have cricket, kabaddi, gillidanda, indian form of lagori, more number of free style wrestling events, kite flying, marbles, more pistol events in shooting, chaturanga, jallikattu, langdi, kho kho then we will be winning 50+ GOLD for sure :D

PS: China is launching e sports like gaming as medal events from next Asian games

Pakistan will kick off his rugby seven campaign tomorrow when they take on Hong Kong, followed by a match against Thailand as well

Pakistan mens Rugby sevens will kick off their campagin tomorrow, when they will take on Hong Kong, followed by a match against Thailand as well, At the same time men semi final hockey action will take place with India taking on Malaysia followed by Pakistan taking on Japan.

They train like Goku and Vegeta from dragon ball z....them North Korean athletes. But in all seriousness i hear their training regime is crazy and tough

Surprised to see Bangladesh and Sri Lanka with no medal. Even Nepal and Afghanistan have medals. Sri Lanka was earlier quite good in sprint events, no? Even Myanmar has just 2. SAARC countries have done very poorly.

Till now,
India 54 medals
Pakistan 3
Afghanistan 2
Nepal 1
Maldives+Bangladesh+Sri Lanka+Bhutan 0

SAARC comprises 3% of the world's area, 21% of the world's population and 3.8% (US$2.9 trillion) of the global economy, as of 2015.
East Asia, West Asia, North Asia all have leapfrogged us while we keep fighting amongst ourselves. The only reason we are good at cricket is because of less competition, we truly are a lost cause.

Some of Pakistan results

Men's baseball consolations match
Pakistan beat Indonesia's 10-2

Men quadrant sepak takraw Pakistan lost their match Agaisnt Nepal

Men's rugby sevens Pakistan lost both of their matches today to Hong Kong and Thailand

Men's semi final for 7th and 10th place Pakistan beat China in 3 sets to 2

Hockey was almost a guaranteed gold for them.

Hockey was almost a guaranteed gold for them.

Total choke there. India played so defensive. Hats off to Malaysia for an attacking game, and kept at it even while 2-1 down and a minute to go.

Meanwhile, Johnson gets the 1500m gold. Manjit left too much to do for the end, and ended up on 4th.
In Athletics: 6 Golds for India with 17 total. Have India ever done better than this in Athletics at the Asian games ?

Hands down Malaysia showed up to the party today , they played extremely well offensively and defensively as well, Indian keeper was solid and made some key saves during the penelty shootout. At the same regardless of who your opponent is semi finals and finals are all about pressure and , teams look totally different and useually matches are close Malaysia handled the pressure better today, to be fair to India it was also the first time in this tournamenet they were truley tested as well

ANOTHER UPSET Japan has defeated Pakistan in men's hockey by a score of 1-0. Pakistan really played a bad game some improvement in 3rd and 4th period but were bad. Credit to Japan the played tight defense made most of their penelty corner chance, and even tried to score some more on counter attacks. Pakistan offence was too one dimensional too predictable and no vision or creativity. Really disappointing match. Congratz to Japan you will face Malaysia for the gold medal and I'll be cheering for you since your the underdog. Pakistan will take on India for the bronze medal and I'm sure India will win that match

Pakistan were horrible!!.That is a huge upset.Pakistani forwards were sleeping throughout the match. What a wasted opportunity.Could have gone into finals as favourites and win gold but congratulations to Japan for playing well. They deserved to win.

India beat Japan 8-0 in group match, Pakistan beat Malaysia 4-1. Now both the South Asian giants will play for bronze, who saw that coming? How is this even possible? Were they over confident or nervous? They had no business losing to these weaker teams.

I meant my team only dude lol.

Okay well than my bad if that's the case sorry but you shouldn't be too upset atleast you have a lot of medals to begin with and you won in sports you weren't suspected to win in as well .

The good part is we get another Indo-Pak hockey match. Best of luck to both teams.

who saw that coming.. Japan vs malaysia final.. pak n ind will play bronze medal match.. two huge upsets..

Pakistan mens Sqaush team will be in semi final action tomorrow
Pakistan will take on Malaysia
Hong kong will take on India
The winner of each match will go on to play for the gold medal in the finals.....maybe a chance of a India vs Pakistan final :)

Pakistan mens soft tennis team will be in action tomorrow they will take on
Korea, Laos and the Philippines

Pakistan womens soft tennis team will be in action tomorrow they will take on
Japan and Indonesia

Pakistan mens Sepaktakraw Quadrant team will take on Vietnam tomorrow

Pakistan mens rugby sevens will be in action tomorrow they will take on China

Mnes 100kg judo round of 16 Shah Hussian Shah will be in action he will take on Kazakhstan Viktor Demyanenko.

who saw that coming.. Japan vs malaysia final.. pak n ind will play bronze medal match.. two huge upsets..

Neither of these are really huge upsets.. Malaysia is a very solid team and is ranked Higher than Pakistan in FIH rankings and has beaten India several times in the past. While Japan is just 3 rankings below Pakistan in Field Hockey.

Right! But the way india and pak were scoring goals in the tournament, everyone was anticipating indo-pak final. Thats why the outcome of these two games came as a shock!

Malaysia is a trash team today and hadn't beaten India since 2011. Had lost last 6 matches to India with a goal-difference of 25-11.

Pakistan beat China in a riveting Asian Games 2018 men’s volleyball match.

Pakistan edged past China 3-2 in the 7-12 semifinal fixture of the tournament.

China took the first set by 25-17. However, Pakistan leveled by winning the second set by 28-26.

The Chinese side edged past their opposition and won the third set by a narrow margin of 30-28.

The Pakistan side, in a do-or-die, situation won the fourth set by 25-19. They went on win the fifth and deciding set of the semi-final by 18-16.

Yuanbo Li of China scored the most number of aces in the fixture with five. His team mate Liye Li converted 30 spikes into points.

Pakistan is placed at No 34 on the medals table with three bronze medals to its name. China, on the other hand, tops the medals table with 229 medals — 108 golds, 70 silvers and 51 bronze medals.

When the Malaysian team walked into a floodlight-dappled Gelora Bung Karno Stadium for the Asian Games opening ceremony on August 18, applause was mixed with boos.

They were the only country jeered by sections of the capacity crowd during the extravaganza to promote peace, but then again it would take more than a light show, spectacular backdrop and feel-good atmosphere to completely remove deep-rooted tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.

Asian Games: Indonesia rejects pencak silat cheating claims – top official Erick Thohir on defensive amid calls for transparency

It’s inevitable that sporting issues would become entwined and quite appropriate that the traditional martial arts discipline of pencak silat should become the source of ill-feeling at the Asian Games.

On Monday, Malaysia’s 2016 world champion Mohd Al-Jufferi was taking on Indonesia’s Komang Putra in the men’s 65-70kg final when he abruptly stopped and walked off the mat in front of a stunned audience in Jakarta.

He said afterwards that the judges were so biased towards the home player that there was no point in continuing as Putra went on to take the title – one of 14 pencak silat gold medals for Indonesia out of their overall total of 30 so far.

“I respect all parties but I cannot respect the judges,” said Al-Jufferi afterwards, careful not to place specific blame on his opponent and hinting that it was judges from South Korea and Laos that he was unhappy with.

Still, he was angry enough to later punch a wooden partition and smash a hole in it, something for which the Malaysian delegation apologised.

Al-Jufferi was also consoled in an emotional embrace by Malaysia’s sports minister, 25-year-old Syed Saddiq, who later tweeted a video of the hug with a Malay-language posting that said: “You are still the winner in our eyes and hearts … Don’t apologise. NEVER. I will not accept. I stand firm with you, our hero.”

Although the athlete did not blame the home judges, the fact that it happened on Indonesian soil was enough for Malaysians to turn on their neighbours.

The two countries have long been at odds over a number of issues, such as smog from Indonesian forest fires drifting over the Malaysian peninsula, the treatment of Indonesian maids by their richer brethren and even a Malaysia tourism advert that featured a traditional pendet dance claimed by their rivals, with Indonesians angry that their culture had been stolen.

After the silat incident, Malaysian social media users went into overdrive.

“Indonesia must be so proud to defeat the world champion,” wrote Indera Shahrul on one news portal. “But sadly, with a very dirty trick. To let down the world champion, they have no other way but to play dirty. However, Indonesia still acted like a saint, like they have done nothing wrong.”

Rai Shield said: “Last time during the women’s sepak takraw, when Indonesia lost to Malaysia, they burnt our flag … even it was their own mistake. Indonesia is like that, little things they declare war.”

Ama Apa wrote: “The thing is, the Indonesian player missed many kicks and still he got points. Do you think it is fair? No dignity at all these Indonesians. They should not host any events at all.”

One Indonesian responded: “What kind of champion is that?” after Al-Jufferi punched the wall.

Another called Malaysians poor losers, writing: “Your country is unsportsmanlike, it does not accept defeat, and what is more embarrassing is that it damages the host facilities. What a shame!”

It was not the first time the two countries sparred over pencak silat. At the 2017 southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Indonesia accused Malaysia of cheating in the men’s pairs event by giving their athletes more points than they deserve.

Indonesian team manager Edhy Prabowo said at the time: “It’s absolutely not authentic, not proper. Never in the history of the men’s doubles has anyone had such inflated points.

“They [Malaysians] did not even deserve a third place, not even a fourth. I knew Malaysia would cheat. This is not good for our athletes, but we now have to accept this,” he added, saying the “farce” would affect pencak silat’s hopes of eventually earning a place in the Olympics.

As of Wednesday, Indonesia had won 30 gold medals compared to four for Malaysia, who also took four silvers and four bronze medals in pencak silat.
