What's new

Asian Games 2018 : 18th August - 2nd September

I thibk it makes sense from Indian Olymoics Association's POV now to invest less in team sports. For all the hype, Hockey remains a constant disappointment. Kabaddi team also lost.

Rather invest more funds on individual sports. Invest on 15 medal winners rather than 15 people who dont collectively win even 1 medal.

Football, Rugby, Hockey, Kabaddi they must all bear their own expenses to participate in world events. No IOA hand outs to these constant losers.

Pakistan were horrible!!.That is a huge upset.Pakistani forwards were sleeping throughout the match. What a wasted opportunity.Could have gone into finals as favourites and win gold but congratulations to Japan for playing well. They deserved to win.

They looked fatigued. They probably exerted to much in those 16-0 and 10-0 wins.

Exactly, need to focus more on individual sports than team-sports. Athletics in particular needs major investment as the results have been outstanding.

Indian women's squash team defeated favs Malaysia to reach finals, they will play for GOLD vs Hong Kong tomorrow.

Indian eves will take on Japan in field hockey for GOLD in 90 mins time. Good luck ladies!

Even though we missed 3 GOLD in hockey, kabaddi, stupendous performance from all other athletes.

There are only 2 Indian boxers left in semi final bouts so pretty tough to win any GOLD here :|

We can expect bronze/ silver in Bridge too :fingers crossed:

We will overtake the best medal haul in terms of total this year. Kabaddi and hockey were big disasters plus some minor blips in wrestling and shooting.

Why on earth did Pakistan send such a big contigent when they were nowhere close to medals contenders.
Nearly 300 athletes and 3 medals

Poor from Pakistan but wont blame the players. Infact feeling bad for some players.

Blame lies more on the system.

Because Asian games is a platform where they get to rub shoulders with some world class athletes. Last Olympics, not a single Pakistani athlete qualified on merit and they had to rely on a few wildcards. I am quite sure that they don't make the cut for World Championships either. So it is important to give athletes some exposure even if the opponents are several leagues higher.

Indian boxer Amit storms into finals after winning his bout against much fancied Filipino opponent.. at least a silver is assured :D

Vikas Krishnan gave a w/o to his kazakh opponent because of the injury he suffered in quarters so he settles for a bronze :(

India clinch 1 silver and 2 bronze in sailing ... yay :)

13 GOLD and 22 SILVER with ZERO contribution from kabaddi and hockey so far!

Some guy qualified for Diving finals, first time for us, probably will not win a medal but kudos to him.

Joshna Chinappa upstaged eight-time world champion Nicol David in women's squash team event. This is probably the biggest upset caused by an Indian in the games!

Hong Kong men's squash team beats India in semi final and has advance in the final will take on winner of Malaysia or Pakistan

Bridge - Indian men's pair is leading hong kong and china by 37 pts at the end of final round 1.

Tomorrow there shall be final round 2 which will decide GOLD.

Men's sqaush semi finals Malaysia beats Pakistan and will be Hong Kong in the finals.Since their is no bronze medal Match both India and Pakistan will get bronze medals for this event . Meaning Pakistan now had 4 medals

Indian women lose to Japan in hockey final! Silver :(

wow japan really improving on their hockey imagine their men win thats double gold, and they wouldnt even need to really win in sense of qualification for olympics, since their the host. In that case since Japan beat India, does your women team get an automatic qualification for the the Olympic event

Just watched a report on how some of our Gold winners have risen from extreme poverty. One was a rickshaw puller's daughter who competed with a broken jaw, still won Gold!

There is no clarity on that yet, but ideally that's what should had happened ,you never know they will find a way to disqualify Indian women's team.
Also we are not part of hockey series ,not sure why so we will have it even harder time qualifying.

This is what's I found on Wikipedia for women's hockey qualification

^1 – Japan qualified both as host and continental champion, therefore that quota is added to the qualification events rather than going to the runner-up of the tournament. So it's true what you said. But this is stupid cuz in the best I believe runner up would qualify if you have a situation like this

Also for the hockey series are you referring to the men's team because if that's true isn't the hockeh series they only way you can qualify if you don't win the Asian games

Sensational from Amit who wins gold in boxing against much fancied Uzbek boxer 3-2 on points... if not for Vikas injury we would have had another Gold in 🥊

GOLD no 14 .. hockey and kabaddi are no longer our contributors :D

We would have still finished 7th. Uzbeks have 7 boxers in finals today
We missed 7 in athletics because of African imports , 4 in kabaddi, hockey and 3 in shooting , wrestling because of reduced # of events. We would have finished @ 4 th spot. Even in archery we equaled Korea’s score but they got gold because of more X’s in finals.

India go down to Hong Kong in Squash women's team finals thus settling for silver.

15 GOLD and 24 SILVER, I guess that's it for India @ this games, closing ceremony is tomorrow.

Areas to concentrate :: fencing, teakwando, judo, karate, cycling, sailing where we won only silver/ bronze this time.

I hope by next CWG/ Asian games we will win GOLD at these sports which also feature in Olympics regularly.

It's ok i guess as majority of our winners are pretty young..add to this Khelo India is throwing up new talents in School level..future is bright...

Yes, but we need to also invest more in fencing, teakwando, judo, karate, cycling, sailing for the sake of olympics.

I don't think Cycling/Sailing will be much useful as difficult to compete with Western countries in these filed.Another major medal even is Swimming again pretty difficult.

Shooting/Wrestling is our main strength so needs full effort there.

With way our Kabaddi teams lost here i am afraid we cannot even guarantee a Olympics Gold if event added in future.

Need to invest in other sports as well can't always bank on traditional ones as other nations keep coming into them.

Most of the Indian athletes this Asian Games (even the ones who got nothing) have far surpassed South Asian standards and belong to a different league now. About time India starts pumping in funds into sports because there is no shortage of talent. Chinese system would have transformed many of our boys and girls into world beaters.

Don't want it that way even if takes more time, freedom is more important.

Other sports are not easy unless some extraordinary talent emerges. Wrestling is one of the popular sports in India so putting more efforts there should be priority.

Wrestling have total 72 medals (18+18+36)... In comparison Swimming have 35 Gold medals :(

Cycling/Sailing etc have their own tourneys in western countries so people learn or inspired by very young age.We cannot simply push random people into random sports by throwing money only.

Chinese system doesn't work in Democracy.

India leading 1-0 vs Pakistan in Bronze medal Hockey

Teenager Esow wins maiden world track cycling medal for India few months back.
He reached pre quarters this Asian games, was just 1 win away from a medal, but he's only 17, can only improve from here.

Pathetic show from India in team games. Such a waste of time and money

Have to check on how India can qualify for Olympics but right now it's not looking bright.

Congratz to Indian Hockey team on winning the bronze medal, they made their chances count, Pakistan started off slow, but played a good third and fourth period, had a good amount of possession, and had some good chances as well to score, India was strong on defence, and made their chances count. Pakistan had 4 penalty corners and were not able to score on one, this will be an area they will need to improve on.

Wow Japan wins gold in mens hockey as well, double gold for japans hockey team both their men and women good job :)

according to wikipedia because we had Japan win the asian games, and since their host, same procedure will follow

Japan qualified both as host and continental champion, therefore that quota is added to the qualification events rather than going to the runner-up of the tournament

so basically in the olympic qualifying event rather than having 6 teams qualify it will be 7 and also the reminder would be the winners of their regional games/ tournamnets, plus the host so a total of 12 teams for both men and women.

Now i read somewhere else the olympic event would be a 14 team rather than 12 im so confused not sorry guys if someone has confrimation please let me know thanks.

Latest standings.

China's won less medals this time. They win 199 golds too not too long ago. Others are catching up to an extent.

Really strange. India beat Japan 8-0 in the group game, and Japan ended up winning the gold!!!

ANOTHER UPSET Japan has defeated Pakistan in men's hockey by a score of 1-0. Pakistan really played a bad game some improvement in 3rd and 4th period but were bad. Credit to Japan the played tight defense made most of their penelty corner chance, and even tried to score some more on counter attacks. Pakistan offence was too one dimensional too predictable and no vision or creativity. Really disappointing match. Congratz to Japan you will face Malaysia for the gold medal and I'll be cheering for you since your the underdog. Pakistan will take on India for the bronze medal and I'm sure India will win that match

Lol Japan beating Pakistan in hockey, yeh bhi din dekhney they

Pakistan just looked sluggish. Days of Alloo Parathay and Lassi are over. You need to work on fitness and have a sportsman diet

I enjoyed the hockey match. I am no expert but I think Pakistan played very well and there was not much to choose between the 2 sides, we won because Pak forwards kept on missing, even our forwards missed but not as much. The standard was more enjoyable than the gold medal match, both of us choked against inferior opponents in the semi finals.

Asian Games hockey: Pakistan captain blames ‘luck’ for India loss

KARACHI: Pakistan hockey team, which returned with empty hands from the 18th edition of the Asian Games, losing the bronze medal match against India, are still satisfied by their improved performance.

Men in Green won all of their five pool matches in a dominating way, conceding only one goal and scoring 45 before losing the semi-final against Japan and the bronze medal match against India.

Pakistan team last displayed a similar performance at the 2002 Asian Games when after winning their three pool matches; they lost the semi-final to India and the bronze medal match to Malaysia.
However, captain Muhammad Rizwan Senior is satisfied with his team’s performance. “The performance of the boys and the game play was much better than before. They have improved a lot which is a good sign,” he told The Express Tribune.

“Although we didn’t win a medal despite winning the first five matches, which is disappointing, but we played well, however luck was not on our side in the last two matches,” he added.

Rizwan laid emphasis on the importance of scoring the opening goal, which he believes puts the other team under pressure. “The matches we lost, both the matches, we didn’t score the first goal, which we did in other matches and I think that was the point that built pressure on us and we were unable to manage it,” he said.

Meanwhile, former captain Muhammad Irfan said their last two opponents, Japan and India, also praised their improved skills. “The new coach has worked on us a lot and that is why we have improved in specific areas. We know our job now and are clear about the moves to execute during matches.”

“Indian team also praised our gameplay and said the combination of the players is much better than before, and also the head coach who has worked with team India, also received praise,” he said. “This tournament had much significance for the Summer Olympics qualification but we still have more important assignments ahead and I believe if we keep working with this coach, we can turn into a really tough team to beat.”

On the other hand former Olympians are not happy with team’s performance.

The director of domestic hockey and player development Naveed Alam said that blaming luck is not professional. “The team lost the last two matches by making mistakes and missing chances. They should have known that Japan and India are tough teams and will require a different game plan.”

“They played the same way and lost; they cannot blame their luck. They did simple mistakes which I believe will be pointed out by the head coach and the management once they are back in the country. They have the hockey World Cup coming up and now will have to play in the qualification rounds for Olympics and for that they will have to learn from their mistakes,” he said.
