Attitude against Pakistan : Sachin Tendulkar vs Virat Kohli

Yeah. Afridi is the same guy who held a beheaded goat next to his crying daughter and posted the picture. But he's a good guy all in all.

And I think most who interact with him get that about him, which is why he and Sachin were seen having a laugh not too long after the shaking legs story.

Sachin never made a comment after Afridi's statement. On the contrary, he had reacted to Shoaib's 'he's scared of me' line by saying it was beneath his dignity to respond to something like that.

Need to google this goat story. WTH. Only Afridi can think it's funny :))

If you live in India, you would know that being friends with Pakistani cricketer isn't exactly the best way to PR. Not that I am against it, I think Kohli genuinely respects Amir because he knows he's a great talent.

but since you know a thing or two, who are we all to argue. Kohli is pretentious, end of.. Am I right? :))

You are being way too simplistic. That works only in certain segments. Kohli is not running for elections for these things to work. :P

Also being blindly against Pakistani cricketers isn't gonna get him lauded by media which is what PR all about.

Recently, Ashwin took a fixing jibe at Gibbs for a harmless comment made by the latter. He was torn apart by media and fans (and rightly so). Poor guy had to go into damage control to manage his PR. :))

By the way, I never brought Amir into the picture.

I think one of the reasons why most Pakistanis have an acceptance issue with Sachin is probably because its easier to digest Kohli being the bigger superstar in this era when Pakistan is going through a superstar shortage but Tendulkar pretty much held his own back in the day even when Pakistan had its own superstars in the 2 Ws, Akhtar, Anwar, Inzy, Yousuf etc.

I think that's something that's probably never gone down well with the Pakistanis.

Nothing else really explains the anomaly that while Kohli remains leagues below Tendulkar in the eyes of most non Pakistani neutrals, the Pakistanis are happy in putting Kohli, Dravid, Dhoni even Sehwag above Tendulkar at times.

The hatred for Tendulkar on Pakistani forums historically has been legendary and mind boggling.

There was a thread on this forum not too long ago when Tendulakr was about to retire, that said now is the time to accept Sachin is a legend of the game. Like seriously?

I think more than Tendulkar's fictional issues with Pakistan its the large majority of the Pakistani fans online that have a lot of explaining to do wrt why the hate and nonacceptance for Tendulkar has been so high around here. Its small hearted, unsporstmanlike and downright disgraceful.

Good points raised.

Also the fact that he was 16 and looked 16 was an issue that appeared to be bothersome at the time. You'd see guys like Hasan Raza being thrown in with 14 or 15 years old tagged to him. It's always made me wonder because Pakistan had a boy wonder in Mushtaq Mohammad long before Sachin came along.

Sachin is simply the greatest batsman in all-round skills since post WWII.

The problem most posters including myself have with him is his lack of tough runs in wins.

Lara and Waugh outshined him in the rough situations in the late 90’s and Ponting in the mid 00’s. This does not mean he had a weak mind or heart but he just couldn’t get the job done.

For all the hate players like Amir (rightfully) and obscurity that Bevan (undeservingly so) get, they are known for their ability to perform when it matters the most. I think the innings that best personifies him is that Chennai innings. 130 odd carrying the team around him, only to fall at the wrong time, and his team collapses all around him.

This is not hate. The chicken-hearted comment I made earlier was a bit of fun. Every sane cricket fan appreciates and loves Tendulkar’s perfect batting. They do not however, deny his ability to choke in big games.

Honest assessment from a Pakistani fan who grew up in the 90's - it's because he was deified by Indians, as he was the only ray of hope in a team that featured the collective might of Doda Ganesh, Robin Singh, and Debasis Mohanty. As a young Pakistani fan I (and I'm sure the overwhelming majority of other Pakistani fans) saw Sachin as a great scorer of runs against other teams, he never scored that many against us for the vast majority of his career and when he did he flubbed most chances of taking his team over the line, so his deification was a joke for us. My brother and I still chuckle at the 'Desert Storm' innings being his greatest achievement for the longest time (a match that India lost).

He and his fans must thank their lucky stars that he top-edged Shoaib Akhtar for 6 at Centurion and our completely inept buffoons dropped him 5 times at Mohali, provides some chest-thumping fodder :yk2. I think most opinions of his success against us are informed by what he achieved in the final part of his career against some of our most toothless attacks.

But it has to be said that his overall final run, when there were calls for him to be dropped, was absolutely superb (starting from the CB tri series win in Australia), a bristling run that included a World Cup win. If I had seen this Tendulkar throughout my youth, my opinion would be very different.

An honest assessment.

Excellent post, really summed up my feelings as well.

Nicely put.

Bottom line, SRT's international debut was playing FOR Pakistan (NOT India), Kohli FOR India (NOT Pakistan).

:)

It wasn’t a fluky top-edge. It was a well thought shot that was an enormous six. Arguably the most iconic shot across world cups. After this Akhtar famously told Akram “mujhse nahi ho raha hai” and begged to be removed from the attack.
Never has a batsman made a speedster look so cowardly.

And the desert storm innings led to India’s victory over Australia in a tri-series. What are you even talking about?

You know not to respond to a post when it claims that one of the most iconic WC knocks is a fluke, and that SIX off Akhtar was a top edge :))

Indians' hatred for Imran is far far higher than Pakistanis' hatred for SRT.

Talking about online world.

Maybe I went over the top. But definitely one of the most iconic knocks in Ind vs Pak WC encounters till date.

Who cares what Tendulkar or Kohli think of Pakistan...or for that matter what Richards, Chappell, Cook, DeVilliers think of Pakistan.

Why are Pakistanis so obsessed with who thinks what of them.

Just play your damn cricket and try to win every game.

It's because of the Kapil Dev factor mostly. Some guys on the Indian forum were arguing a few days ago how Kapil Dev is better than all Pak bowlers bar Wasim Akram, specifically better than Waqar and Imran. That's not the funny part though. The funny part being that they were serious about it :))

Yeah. No point in taking part in those debates. :))

Yeah Imran Khan was a ball tamperer (so were Wasim and Waqar). But the way some talk about them, you would think they would be gully mohalla level bowlers without ball tampering.

Somehow Wasim gets spared even though he was the worst of them all (ball tamperer and alleged fixer) but Amir gets torched down for being a fixer.

Hilarious hypocrisy.

I love Kapil and feel he is terribly under-rated in general but my God, some Indians overcompensate for that.
