Aus [662/9d] defeat Eng [403 & 218] in the 3rd Test by an innings and 41 runs to regain The Ashes

Agree not a long term solution That is why their performance oscillate between mediocrity to invincibility. Their batsmen become monsters. Bowlers become way more potent with persistent line and length. If they want to become the 2000 Australian sides they have to start restoring the original nature of Australian pitches.
If they are scared to roll out seaming track at home how will they survive outside Australia.

Cricket in Australia is in summer, when Australia tour it is the football season and not many care what happens. Australian supporters really only care about the home season, much different than countries where cricket is the dominating sport.

If it's a wash out today, that keeps Ashes for Boxing day Test at 100K capacity MCG though - big, big pay day for CA.

Ignore it, just thinking loud ...............................................

Kanspiraci!!!!!

Even the Aussie commentators were talking about the significance of the Boxing Day test if the Ashes were still open :smith

Bairstow could have really hit the elite cricketer league of fab five if stood till last, blocked his way and saved the match.

Bairstow is constantly out on the drink & doesn't bat in the top order. Not "fab" material as he doesn't have the attitude to get the best from his talent.

Ali's confidence has deteriorated beyond repair for the series now.

Don't think Woakes or Overton should be batting below him.

He literally looks like getting out basically everyball vses Lyon.

Hasn't really troubled anyone else apart from Ali.

The wicket of Root was a gift.

Aussies begins to sniff victory. Well and truely into the tail now

The ashes is done and dusted damn

1 more wicket... England needs to call back Stokes and Hales for the next match..

Wow Anderson hit on head, this is so bad for England now

From 368/4 to end up losing by an innings. I don't think even Pakistan with its famous collapsible traits have conjured anything like it.

Overton still had the better chance of sticking around and scoring.

Have you seen Broad against the short ball?

That's what makes it disgraceful - not having the guts to stand up to short pitched stuff. Why is it that everyone accepts he can't play the short ball and it's ok for him to be a walking wicket nowadays?

He wasn't like this earlier. Australia frightened him a couple series back and now we all know he's either going to back away and swat it, or get out limply.

During the initial half of his career, he seemed to have the fighting qualities of Flintoff. Today was a great opportunity for him to show some guts especially given how poor he has been with the ball.

He has turned into an entitled selfish cricketer who moans and yells when others misfield while he's bowling but has had some shockers himself in the field this series - not once have I seen him put up his hand and apologize to Woakes off whom he's had at least three terrible fielding moments.

It's sad to see such a fine promising cricketer get destroyed by the biased English cricket establishment that anoints golden boys and refuses to give them reality checks.

Root is next in line.

Played Australia. A very fine bowling attack, with batting that is good enough, easily overcoming an England side which looks jaded, tired, and short of test class in many cases. They picked the wrong players and got found out.

he got hit with a varun aaron bouncer and hasn't been the same since

Stuart Broad hasn't offered anything with bat and ball, neither has Moeen Ali. Woakes has barely taken any wickets either leaving Jimmy to slog like a workhorse to take the odd wicket. What's the tactics?

Pathetic in all departments. From the board, through the selectors and the players. Time for a complete shake up and for a few to call time on their time in the England set up

You're right. And the Aussies have hammered that fear in, since then.

Personally, I dislike Anderson wholeheartedly, but it's a terrible insult to Anderson that he has to bat at No 11. Time and again he has shown his refusal to gift his wicket away.

If Broad refuses to show any spirit, he has no business batting anywhere but at No 11

Vince's 50 means he will keep his place. Probably bad for England

When ball's sprayed on off stump region he's been vulnerable with all the pokes but the lad had played a solid inngs before get off to a near unplayable delivery

Hence he deserves the place,if someone has to questioned for the humiliation it should have to be the captain and the senior most opener

It’s not a question of “spirit”, the bloke has a phobia caused by that Varun delivery. He needs psychological help. Any competent hypnotherapist could sort him out.

He needs a break from the English team and possibly cricket in general.

Come back to county cricket sometime in June and see if he still has it.

PERTH (Reuters) - A ruthless trio of pacemen and the medical men propping them up were key to Australia’s Ashes triumph, captain Steve Smith said on Sunday, after his team won back the urn with a dominant win at the WACA.

Australia thrashed England by an innings and 41 runs before tea on day five of the third test, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.

Josh Hazlewood took 5-48, with fellow seamers Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc sharing three wickets as England were routed for 218 in their second innings on a cracked-up pitch.

Australia’s pace dominance was underlined by England’s struggles, the tourists’ four quicks all conceding over 100 runs as Smith’s side declared at a mammoth 662 for nine on day four.

“I think here in Australia (the extra pace) certainly makes a difference on the flatter tracks where there isn’t much sideways movement,” Smith told reporters, having won a second Man-of-the-Match award in the series for his brilliant 239.

”That extra air speed can make a big difference and we’ve worked really hard to ensure that we had these three big quicks on the park and ready for this series.

”A couple of them skipped the one-day series in India (in October) and we knew what was coming up.

“We were preparing for this series and we wanted those big three on the park to do what they’ve done the last three test matches.”

Australia have battled to keep their pacemen fit, with Cummins waiting six years to play his second test in India earlier this year after a string of back injuries following his 2011 debut away to South Africa.

Pace spearhead Starc has also missed plenty of cricket with a succession of foot injuries, while Hazlewood came into the series with limited match preparation after suffering a side strain.

Starc carried a heel injury at the WACA, but captured the key wicket of England number three James Vince for 55 on day four with a brilliant, unplayable delivery that clattered into the stumps.

“Fortunately they’ve been on the park for a little while now,” said Smith.

”So I’ve got a new-found respect for the bowlers, the work that they do off the park: the weights, the rehab, the fitness.

“Everything that they do to get themselves right to play test match cricket and bowl at that pace consistently -- it’s an incredible effort.”

Smith also praised Australia’s selectors, who were criticised for the left-field recalls of wicketkeeper Tim Paine for his first test in seven years and much-maligned batsman Shaun Marsh.

Marsh was Man-of-the-Match for his unbeaten century in the second test in Adelaide, with Paine also performing well with the gloves and the bat in the second and third tests.

“A lot of people came out and said that they were some very bold decisions at the start of the series and the selectors get criticised quite a lot,” said Smith.

“But I think they’ve done a terrific job with the squad that we’ve picked at the start and everyone that’s come in has done an exceptional job so a lot of credit has got to go to the selectors.”

Root is next in line.

Broad got hit in the face and had nightmares about it. Sounded like textbook PTSD. Before people criticise a guy who isn't handling the short ball while playing at 10 for a while, they should see how the batters are doing.

Nothing new. We all knew the bowling attack wasn't capable of taking 20 wickets. Their best player wasn't on the plane. Anyone who can bowl 90+ In England just hadn't played enough first class cricket after injury or was injured.

The one thing ECB messed up was how they managed their selections this past summer.

Bringing back Ballance before he injured his finger was widely criticised. Rightly so. Vince wasn't good enough to be called in for his initial run and certainly not for this one.

Unfortunately Vince has inked himself for home summer with meaningless 50s for a stock, laughably predictable dismissal.

Still think Bairstow may be their best batsman and flourish without the gloves at 4, Root at 3, Foakes at 6.

Still, credit where credit is due. Stoneman outscored his partner as a rookie and did enough all things considered. Malan has shown he has what it takes. Both selections were good.

Congrats to Australia, I'm sure they'll enjoy it for the next 15 months before they inevitably hand it back to England in England.
