Australian commies like Gilly had to patiently endure Vaughan subtle trolling throughout the match. Very nice of Gilly and Warner. They had the last laugh.

i was just checking England's record in Aus in recent times.

Since 2000, one series win....

A couple of whitewashes

- few and sporadic draws and wins.....


And yet India get bagged as Home track bullies - cannot play outside India.....cannot face fast bowling....Cannot play bounce

Yet - we've won two series back to back in Aus - an amazing achievement....i guess only SAF have matched since the 2000's...

When i saw Lyon and that debutant tailender batted pitch looked like eased out. It was not a sub 200 all out pitch at all. England contrived to do that against the least threatening bowler of the trio (Hazlewood, Cummins, Starc) without their main cast. It will haunt guys like Root forever.
 
Test finished inside 2 days!!

The result shows that Australia won by a commanding 8 wickets.

The harsh reality is, England at one point, had a healthy lead of 105 runs in the second innings with 9 wickets remaining.

Australia bowled in the right areas. However, it still does not justify losing 9 wickets for just 99 runs. English batsmen only have themselves to blame.

Because of the pacy and bouncy nature of the Aussie pitches, games can change in one session or in the blink of an eye

Travis Head is a headache for many teams!
He may not be as consistent as Steve Smith but he has got the ability to score runs when the team really needs them and more often than not he will succeed. Head showed that the pitch was not as unplayable as England made it look.

Bazball crap only works on flat pitches. In the end that 40-run first innings lead, in a seemingly low scoring game, counted for little
 
Another away Ashes whitewash could be looming for England unless they change their batting approach.

Bumrah has bowled well in second innings many times. His chief issue is when india has spinners, in 4th innings captain rarely allows him to bowl as indian spinners dominate

I just saw the highlights. Fantastic axe cutting by both Labu and Head. They were thrown off with moving all over the crease. England had no answer
 
England's Bazball approach is not going to work on Australian pitches. The sooner they realize this the better.

That is not bazball approach lol Only Brook tried that. Others succumbed due to lack of feet movement. In the 2nd innings pitch was flat. Last Perth test had 5 degree seam movement. That was way more difficult and they had Hazlewood and CUmmins as well. But these guys had much better batting conditions and were up against Starc/ debutant/Boland..The totally squandered it.
 
Fantastic performance from Head and Starc to get a 1-0 lead in Ashes. England good days are yet to come.
 
England over the last few years have had the flattest of batting conditions to aid their so called Bazball. It's not coincidence their batsmen have scored a lot of runs at home. Everything they come up against challenging conditions they fall short. Aussies just have to make green wickets and they can win this 5-0 .

Seems like Smith threw the idea Head gleefully accepted it. Brought his ODI/T20 game in. In Tests you anyway have attacking field set. He bullied them by exposing the stumps. With 5 fast bowlers that shouldn't have happened. Having said that Head just accelerated the demise. I don't think anyone including debutant opener, Labu had any issues. Even without head they woudl have won probably in 45 overs or so. Pitch totally eased out.
 
Dissapointing from Eng to not capitalize on Aus missing their main attack. Eng was 100+ ahead with 9 wickets in hands, but gave up.

Hope Eng puts up some fight and it's not regular one way flogging in Aus.

There are a quiet a few technically weak batsmen starting from Crawley in this set up. Nobody has that attitude of Alistair cook who was immensely patient.
 
They should kick out Khawaja and bring in Mitch Marsh. He can offer more. Terrific fielder. Can chip in a over or two. In Amazing hitting form.

Root needs to step up. He should be able to go big few times despite being a suspect on bouncy surfaces in Aus. He is a fantastic player, it's make or break time for him.

I was surprised they stuck with Usman till this Ashes, should have retired him after the India series last year.

He had much less challenging conditions in the 2nd innings. He just had to see off Starc. He could have handled others. Starc is not even the best of the trio in Tests. Not like he is out of form. He is ranked no.2 or something

Yah, Root should be able to go big few times. He is in form and Aus missing bowlers. Hope it comes in early part of the series. It would be meanigless if series is lost by the 3rd test and some big scores come.
 
Same race but skillset spart, English players just do not have the mental toughness or discipline of Aussie players. English players just too excitable.

England might dominate one or two sessions (or even an entire day) of a test match and then lose it completely in the 3rd.

Whereas Aussie players, even if they have one or two really bad session or a whole bad day, have got this remarkable ability, discipline and belief to stage a comeback from any situation.
 
Harry Brook is a sitting duck on wickets which aid spin or seam. A total flat track bully. He does not have the defensive technique to survive on challenging pitches which is why he resorts to technically flawed slogging or driving loosely away from the body when challenged.
 

Mitchell Starc – After the Match​


Q: You’ve got a big smile—can you believe what you just saw with the batting?
Starc: “Pretty much sums it up. Trav took the game on and came up trumps — it was something to watch.”

Q: After your incredible bowling in the first innings, you didn’t expect to be back so soon. What mattered most on this wicket?
Starc: “It was a hell-to-skelter couple of days for both sides. We just focused on sticking to what we do well as a group, and you saw Scotty Boland and Brendon Doggett step up while Trav was something else today.”

Q: No Cummins or Hazlewood — a lot was on you. Did the seven-for feel like a relief?
Starc: “I was pretty calm all week. First time without Josh or Pat in a while, but my role didn’t change. It’s been the same for nearly 15 years, so I just tried to do what I’ve always done. Really pleased to play that role.”

Ben Stokes – After the Match​


Q: Can you make sense of what just happened?
Stokes: “A bit shell-shocked. That innings from Travis Head was phenomenal — it’s still raw and fresh.”

Q: You were 99 ahead at lunch with one wicket down — does it feel deflating?
Stokes: “On wickets like this, you never think you have enough. The ones who succeeded were brave and took the game on. Anyone trying to just stay out there didn’t find success.”

Q: Do you question the batting application after losing 9 for 100?
Stokes: “The guys who put the bowlers under pressure were the ones who succeeded. There was assistance when bowlers hit the right areas, so you had to be brave.”

Q: You tried clear plans against Head — would you change anything in hindsight?
Stokes: “We tried three or four plans, but when he’s going like a train, plans change quickly. He’s very hard to stop.”

Q: Any positives from the match?
Stokes: “The way our fast bowlers bowled on day one was phenomenal. This loss hurts, but we’ll move on to Brisbane and hit the ground running.”

Steve Smith – After the Match​


Q: One-nil up — how do you reflect on this start?
Smith: “Great start. Two-day Test wins are nice when you’re on the right side. Travis Head’s innings was out of this world.”

Q: When did you decide Head would open?
Smith: “Around tea. Things didn’t quite work in the first innings, and Trav said, ‘I want to do it,’ so I told him to go for it.”

Q: How high does that knock rank?
Smith: “Right up there with the best I’ve seen from anyone. He toyed with them, hit gaps at will, and Marnus supported brilliantly.”

Q: Thoughts on Starc stepping up with two senior bowlers missing?
Smith: “He was unbelievable. With two of the big three out, a lot was on him, and he delivered beautifully — especially with a terrible cricket ball in the first innings.”

Q: How did the debutants perform?
Smith: “Doggett was excellent with key wickets, and Jake bounced back after his duck — that opening partnership with Trav set the tone.”

Q: Would you bring Pat Cummins back even if not at full fitness?
Smith: “I hope so. He’s a weapon and arguably the best bowler in the world. Of course we want him back.”

Q: Your thoughts on the Perth atmosphere?
Smith: “Sensational. Great crowd, great noise, amazing vibe.”

It's a big series and Australia are a slightly risk-averse team when it comes to test cricket and big series. But I can see it happening too. Mitch Marsh somehow always manages to find himself in the reckoning for a spot evethough he has a pretty rubbish record

He is the risk lol THey have been telling this for last few series. He is playing for the opposition more often than not. They can pick Mitch Marsh or even Jos Inglis instead.

Well he did score a double ton a couple of series ago, and you can't exactly drop someone after they've racked up a double ton on an overseas tour. Eventhough his form has been in decline since last year he has been playing those types of 'get out of jail' knocks that have been buying him time. Also in any country selectors hesitate before dropping senior players. But yes Josh Inglis is definitely far more deserving of an opportunity. Not sure if I agree about Marsh though. How many times does this guy have to fail only to make a comeback?

Yeah I can see that happening. He is way too old now at 39. A fine player at his peak with a great compact technique but he's done now

I agree. I think they'll back Marsh simply because I don't they'll risk two inexperienced batsmen in that lineup, with Weatherald being one.
 
English batsmen not being able to handle Boland + Starc does not bode well for them if/when Cummins and Hazlewood join the attack.

What a day for cricket!

We saw Travis Head playing a T20-style knock in a Test match…

Then Marnus Labuschagne followed it up with an ODI style innings in the same Test…

And finally, Babar Azam delivered a classic Test-match knock, but in a T20I!

Australians are a little more humble about their achievements in comparison. LOok at the 1 hour 2 hour discussion on 2005 Test series they are still having that too for winning at home without Mcgrath. Australia has brutalized them many times over the years.
 
So England have 12 days rest between now and the second test.
Having turned down a 2 day practice match against the pink ball..With Starc getting 72 wickets in 14 pink ball test matches at an average of 17.81 and a strike rate of 33.3, including 4 five-wicket hauls. Ominous sign for baz ballers

Whats the status of Hazlewood and Cummins?

And as a MAJOR FORCE IN WORLD CRICKET. Australia have not won a series in England for almost a Quarter of a century. Whilst England last won a series in Australia in alot less time frame than that.
