Unsettled Australia v settled India at start of World Cup year

Big Picture

Five days after the end of the Test series, where India celebrated their historic victory, the attention now shifts to the main one-day event of the year: Mission World Cup.

These are two teams in vastly different positions at the start of the final run-in to the tournament in England. Australia, the defending champions, have won three of their last 24 games since the end of January 2017 and have a multitude of questions over their team. India, one of the favourites, are very close to knowing the players they'll take.

The contrast was stark in the build-up days with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli saying it's unlikely they'll be many changes from the squad on show in Australia - save for the rested Jasprit Bumrah to return and some competition for the reserve pace-bowling slots - while Australia captain Aaron Finch confirmed another much-changed XI with new players in new positions and incumbent players taking new roles.

Just matching up the top three of both teams doesn't feel like a contest: Finch, Alex Carey and Usman Khawaja against Rohit, Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli. If India's top trio fire, as they did consistently last season, they will be very hard to stop for a new-look Australia bowling attack.

While India can think of the World Cup from a position of strength, Australia are desperate for short-term success as well. They have yet to win a series in any format since the ball-tampering scandal. It would certainly go against the form guide if they ended that run here.

In the spotlight

Glenn Maxwell has prompted significant debate in the last few days with his continued Test omission and now he finds himself at No. 7 in the one-day side, tasked with bringing power to the latter stages of an innings. He appeared somewhat frustrated in that role against South Africa in Hobart earlier this season and it is unlikely to provide much chance to build an innings although Finch offered the prospect of him moving up the order in certain situations.

Does MS Dhoni have a final hurrah in him at the World Cup? A great player, he has looked a shadow of his former self in recent times and hasn't passed fifty in 14 ODI innings. That is partly due to batting behind a mighty top order, but even when given the chance to dictate a passage of play he hasn't seemed to have the touch of old. One thing in his favour, however, is that his glovework remains sharp and he continues to produce some terrific work against the spinners.

Team news

All change, please. Australia have mixed things up in their one-day side again in the search for answers. Carey will open with Finch, with the recalled Khawaja and Peter Handscomb either side of Shaun Marsh. Peter Siddle will play his first ODI in more than eight years while Adam Zampa misses out. Mitchell Marsh was ruled out yesterday due to illness.

Australia: 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 Alex Carey (wk), 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Shaun Marsh, 5 Peter Handscomb, 6 Marcus Stoinis, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Jhye Richardson, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Jason Behrendorff

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul are not available for selection, as the BCCI mulls their fate following their controversial comments on an Indian TV show. In an ideal world Pandya provides the balance that allows three seamers and two spinners, but in his absence Ravindra Jadeja is the all-round option while another seamer plays.

India: 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Khaleel Ahmed, 11 Mohammed Shami

Pitch and conditions

After the damp end to the Test match and more rain in recent days, the good news is that the forecast for a warm, sunny Saturday in Sydney. The SCG pitch has been flat this season which should bode well for a high-scoring contest although there appeared a decent covering of grass left on the surface.

Stats and Trivia

The teams have played 16 ODIs at the SCG with Australia winning 13 and India two. India won the most recent encounter in 2016, chasing down 331 with two balls. Australia had centuries from David Warner and Mitchell Marsh while India were steered home by Manish Panday's 104 off 81 balls

Dhawan needs 65 runs for 5000 in ODIs; Jadeja needs 18 for 2000 runs; Bhuvneshwar needs one wicket for 100

Carey, who will open in ODIs for the first time, has a strike-rate opening the batting in List A cricket is 75.55 from 19 innings

Quotes

"While it would have been great to have a settled side for the last 18 months there's still enough time to get it right and make sure come that World Cup that we are ready to go with a really balanced and settled side."
Aaron Finch on getting the team right

"We've been wanting to figure out who apart from Bhuvi and Bumrah are the two or three guys we can bank on. And these games will provide an opportunity for those guys to firstly present their case strongly and secondly gain confidence from playing these games."

ODIs are always much sweeter after you have won the test series.

Exciting times if you are an Indian fan.

AUS has rested their 3 pacers against IND!!!! Also, interesting to see that after so many years, at this age Lyon is being played in ODI, which suggests Aussies are on right path for their WC preparation - they understood the need for couple of wicket taking spinners in middle overs in this modern era. They'll definitely pick a Leggi for WC and Lyon - 2 genuine spinners and they'll trouble most teams on these 300+ dry English tracks.

Aussies are going to be a force in WC - I don't bother much about what they do before that for their preparation, their planning is spot on; developing Carey as well as back-up opener when Warner comes back; and Carey will be in playing XI as WK on his batting merit. Should be a great game and on Friday night :)

Do you think dropping Lynn and Short was a good decision. While I concur that they will be a force in the WC, they might be missing one or two hitters.

Hardik's loss is a big deal for India's preparations. I'm curious to see if Dhoni improved during the break and if Rayudu can cope with the bounce.

Indian batting is as usual pathetic.

Tail starts from Rayadu. It's top 3 or bust.

Dhoni and improving at his age? He will as usual tuk tuk his way to 20's and 30's.

If India had any sense, Shaw would have been in the XI by now. Also Gill would have already debuted.

Dhoni, Jadhav, Rayudu, Jadeja

As usual top 3 batters and spin duo needs to do the work as even Bumrah is rested.

Have Australia lost all interest in cricket? Are these the best players available?!

LOL.... we had players like Agarkar, Kuruvilla, Balaji, T Kumaran, RP, out of pace Irfan, Praveen, Dhawal, Vinay, Ishant 1.0, Umesh 1.0 who will get clobbered even by club batsmen abroad.

Now things have changed, our bowlers rarely fail unless it is an absolute phatta.

I'm talking about Australia.I don't remember such a weak Australian one day team in living memory. Not a single standout player..

Aus never field a full strength team in jamodi but even their B/C side was enough for visitors. Now things have changed , other teams like Ind/ eng / nz have improved.

Very boring match. Was looking forward to some good cricket. This Aussie team is so timid and without any standout players.

Short is a hack, won't last long against spin, Lynn also not the best player of spin. So, I think against IND, they wanted Marsh in middle overs.

I don't think it's a 300 sort of wicket. After few years of madness, Aussie wickets are definitely returning to sanity - my hunch is 250 will make it a decent target, 275+ should win it.

It's just that Indian batting is more suited for hunting down a target. Almost all batters are comfortable single gear players.

At least use your chuck if you do chuck! What's the point of throwing pies with your bent elbow? I mean, learn from Ajmal!

Khwaja played a innings that will win the ODI against almost any team except probably India. I am not sure why many PPers are so obsessed with Slam-bang-thank-you-Afridi kind of innings. Indian team will love to have someone play that kind of innings. This is not T20.

England will eat this Aussie side alive. As they did last year even when Organised repeat Cheaters were available.

Why Khalil? He needs a lot of improvement. If India plays him in WC 2019 they may pay a big price

You allowed Tendulkar to play for two years when he was finished already. Why not Dhoni? Double standard.
Tendulkar overstayed in test matches not odi's even at his worst he was twice the batsman than current dhoni is, also tendulkar never unceremoniously forced others to retire, dhoni getting taste of his own medicine would be an added bonus.

This khaleel nonsense needs to end niether he not that atrocious siraj should be playing for India, these 2 make umesh seem decent.

So Khaleel is also one of the new 'speed demons' being produced by the new Indian pace bowling factory?

Today, if Dhoni scores less than 27 runs and gets dismissed, hit batting average will fall below 50 for the first time since September 2011."

:shezzy2

What double standards? In ODIs, Tendulkar played only 10 matches after he was truly done and scored a good fifty in his last match. Dhoni has been pathetic for 30 odd matches and will have atleast played 52 matches after he was truly finished in 2017.Not even a comparison.

The best pacer of Indian team Bhuvaneshwar getting some stick. Handscomb came down the track and lofted him like he was a spinner :sarf2

So the Indian speed demonic bowlers have ended up conceding 240+ runs in 46 overs to the weakest Australian XI :irfan

I have said this before, I'll say it again, Bhuvi is a very mediocre death bowler. I always get a chuckle when people couple him with Bumrah as the 2 best death bowlers in the world.

Don't understand the logic of appointing a guy as coach who was never even considered an odi player during his playing days. No surprise to see him employing test match and 80's-90's odi tactics today

Correct... Langer is detrimental to his own team

Yep Lehmann was much better. He is playing T20 players in Tests and Test players in ODI

Yes,I am talking about Tendulkar the test batsman in last two years when he performed ordinerily and offcourse not better than Dhoni. India had better batsman than this Tendulkar at that time. Tendulkar made only 633 runs at an average of just 27. Dhoni in last two years made 1063 runs at 44 average. Worse than Tendulkar? Then why India played Tendulkar? Individual worship? Person more important than the nation? Dropping him from the team would have treated like a sin? I know the answer

Dhoni is still the best thy got. The replacements are Karthik and unproven Pant.

This is the worst world cup squad by INdia for a world cup in a very very long time. Probably since 1975 world cup.

Tendulkar was a special case people wanted him gone for his last 2 years but that was down to who he was, dhoni isn't tendulkar. There is a reason why when tendulkar wanted to retire bcci arranged for a special farewell tests and why dhoni ran away midway through the series when he saw the writing on the wall, if kohli wasn't so bad that he needed training wheels, dhoni would have been kicked out by now.

I have a feeling that Chris Lynn alone could send Bhuvi and Khaleel into exile for the rest of their career.

633 at 27 in ODIs? Thought he was decent in tests at the end

Aus might just have a gun ODI unit once Warner and Smith comes back.

Warner, Smith, Lynn, Stonis, Maxwell plus Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood in bowling.
