What's new

Australia [442/8d & 138] defeat England [227 & 233] by 120 runs to go 2-0 up in The Ashes

How many sessions you reckon it will take :afridi

They'll drag it out so they go into the final session with a handful of runs remaining, so they can enjoy their dinner as they look at the dejected Aussies across the dining room. :yk2

If England didn't lose Malan late on in the day I would say they would be favourites but that would have boosted the Aussies who I think are slight favourites now

Imagine Broad and Anderson knitting a partnership to win a nail biter. All hell will break loose. :-P

Kohli almost chased down 360 in Adelaide two yrs ago , let's see if Root can emulate him with this one. Interesting day tomorrrow.

Have a feeling England will crumble midway..... although I hope they win for the sake of the series.

England will have to score heavily in the first session, trying to play out the day won't be possible under the lights the ball just swings too much

You always tend to underestimate the challenge of chasing in the fourth innings, even though history tells us that chasing 250+ - let alone against a quality unit - is incredibly difficult.

Even last year, you were confident at the end of the day four that Shafiq and the tail would take Pakistan home, but as expected, they eventually succumbed to the pressure created by the Australians.

England indeed have a good chance of winning from here, especially if Root can add another 70-80 odd runs. However, Australia is going to come hard at them with some relentless bowling - it is going to be very difficult for Root, Woakes, Bairstow and Moeen to resist the pressure for long.

It is still Australia’s game to lose, but yes miracles do happen.

I don't think that was me, wasn't following that game very closely. But yes, I think people tend to over-estimate the difficulty of a 4th innings chase, just because it is in the 4th innings, irrespective of what is actually going on.

I was one of the people who said WI had a chance earlier and realized how quickly they were winning.

I thought 354 was difficult, but not impossible.

About this game. The batsmen out are Cook (in horrendous form) and the three newcomers whose place have been questioned heavily. This period under lights and the period with the new ball were the most likely times for Australia to dominate.

In that period they've managed 4 wickets for half the runs. They have one session with the old ball under bright sunlight. And an indeterminate number of overs with the new ball in daylight.

England still have Root, Bairstow and Ali their three best batsmen (and also the most aggressive) still surviving and Root set. It doesn't seem so improbable that between this and their formidable tail England stitch together the 1 or 2 partnerships they need to take the game home.

Also, worth considering is the trajectory of the innings. At 54/2 most thought it was just over and England would crumble, even at 91/3 it was beginning to be clear that England thought they could win. Now at 176 it's almost guaranteed to be nervous for both sides, so Australia will find it tough to win by just imposing themselves and hoping for an auto-collapse by England. I'd place this much closer to 55-45 or 60-40.

If Root and Woakes survive the initial burst though, Australia will be in a world of trouble.

Joe Root is one of my favourite cricketer.Very calm and composed customer. Scores runs and doesn't boast about it. Very confident in his outlook.Kudos to the champ

Not sure whether he can carry this to tomorrow because restarting in mornings isn't always his strong point. But If he stays in and can get support from Woakes, Moeen and Bairstow even the impossible could be possible. And interesting to see how the Australians cope if eng get close

Between what a great advertisement to test cricket this turning out to be.Ashes at its very best

Kohli had the support of a great lineup. The openers set up perfectly if am not wrong and those conditions weren't this much tough for the batters.Nevertheless great inngs that was.

Either ali or bairstow need to play a quality inngs here though root will be the ultimate key and for the first time am missing stokes badly

They were much much tougher conditions actually.

The ball was literally turning square with massive cracks. That's why India collapsed after Vijay got out and no one else could get set to play with Kohli.

There's nothing wrong with the wicket at the moment.

I think it will be close. Would be one of the all time great England comebacks if they were to win it, up there with Botham’s Headingley. Australia are still firm favourites with Lyon in the team though, he is a gun.

It’s all about the new ball. If England can get through it without a wicket going down they will be in the driving seat. Then they will be facing an old ball under the lights which will be easier to manage and the Aussies will start to panic.

Moeen and Bairstow will have to step up too, the tail won’t last against these bowlers.

If England get through the new ball they will have batted for about 30 overs. If they haven't lost a wicket by then, the game will be all but over, with England the winner.

It's also, just not going to go to the lights stage at all. If England last the 60 overs before that, they'll have at least 150, but more likely, they'll have just won.

Bairstow would BE the tail, if you go by the position he's going to bat at, but Overton averages more than 20 in all formats, and he top-scored last innings and Broad isn't incapable by any means, so I'm not sure why you're convinced the tail won't do anything.

Sure, they were bundled over last game, but they've been excellent in a more meaningful sample size for quite a long time, so it's far more likely they just had a bad game rather than that the specifics of these Australian bowlers is their kryptonite. They weren't too bad in the first innings either. If the last 3 wickets were to add 80 runs, you'd rather fancy England's chances.

first hour will dictate result. i am working on commentary platitudes

Lyon will be a handful. If they can survive or thrive against Lyon, they have a big chance. The tail don't win these types of games- Lyon or a bouncer barrage will clean them up.

Root needs a ton, otherwise it will take career defining innings from Ali & Bairstow.

Interesting to see if Woakes can do a little cameo- if he goes early our tail will be up.

Woakes was a very interesting strategic choice as Nightwatchman. One of the better batsmen in the team on current form. It’s like they were gambling on him to survive the final session (which paid off) in the hope that he would play one of his vital annoying impish knocks in the morning. Could be a shrewd move if there is an early partnership.

Overton was the highest scorer in the first innings and remained not out, so there's a slight hope. Even if Anderson/Broad are easy pickings.

As a born, bred and resident of England I really hope they win! Joe Root needs to carry this batting line up if they are to win.

There are two periods tomorrow that will test England.

First 30-40 minutes as Root gets his eye in and when the new ball comes around. If they can manage these periods, they're in with a chance to pull off an incredible chase.

Nonetheless, they've turned this into an incredible match. That's what it's all about.

Yes it's used to be Jimmy Anderson as watchman usually? Putting Woakes in suggests that whatever happens they want the scoreboard moving tomorrow, as Jimmy really doesn't do much apart from (try to) defend, but Woakes has a range of shots in his bag.

He has a FC average of 35. There's literally no reason to think he's a worse batsman than Malan or Vince.
Many people seem to find it a little hard to look past tags like 'tailender' and 'bowler'. He's hardly a night-watchman. I suspect they didn't want to risk Ali who's one of the best players but not so great at blocking.

It was a good call, and I don't think a vital 30 would be impish. It would just literally be his average. A 50 or 60 run partnership could put Australia in real strife though.

Batsmen of that quality don't need 30 minutes to get set.

If Joe Root survives his first 15 balls today, Australia are in trouble. He's in no mood to do anything but carry England home.

Joe and England have finally stood up to the challenge, let it end in victory.. :wg

Nightwatchman doesnt survive first ball scare. :boycott

Nothing is going to stop England...... from back to the pavilion :yk

5th day is the only enjoyable day of a test match.

I thought commentators were supposed to atleast try being neutral :danish

Pretty 50 from Root that got the english fans hopes up :salute

Don't mention him in the same breath as Smith and Kohli until he actually starts to actually score runs and win matches consistently.

Not sure with that dismissal, it was a roaring delivery and a strong appeal which were very convincing; but then there was absolutely nothing on hotspot whereas there was a small but clear bump on snicko - could it have been the bat brushing a part of the body or pad? Or did he nick it? I am still unsure.

It's up to Moe and Bairstow to save England again.

These two are their TRUE match winners.

Game far from over.

Poorest second innings 50-100 conversion rates:

0/10 Robin Smith
1/18 S Fleming/ JOE ROOT
1/16 S Ganguly
1/15 V Sehwag
1/14 Bill Lawry
1/13 H Bashar
1/12 R Fredericks
** Min. ten 50+ scores

Good shot by the Bear... He gotta bat higher up. Seems like Mickey Arthur is coaching England.

The bat was no where near the body or pad when the ball passed the bat, in short it could not have been from the bat hitting the body or pads.

Can't be bat on pad/body. It wasn't even close.

The only explanation (other than a faint nick) is his bat handle clicking as he played the shot. It happens but is very rare.

So Aus might still end up winning by an innings (not literally of course) :))

England were trailing by 215 runs before Aus chose to bat again..

They need another 27 runs with 3 wickets left.

Desicion to not enforce the follow on looking silly even though Aus will win this.

Bairstow needs to bat higher.

Root lost the chance at a truly legendary inning.

Wow, the pacer who has been the worst of the 3 is the one who might end up with 5 :))

Should have phrased it better, he's the least deserving of the 3. He's been outbowled by Hazlewood and Cummins whenever I've watched.

The match turned out to be a good one despite the disappointing effort by England on day 5.

Cummins was easily the best bowler from Australia. What a high quality bowler he is. Can swing at high speed.

Don't see Aussies batting twice (effectively) at WACA, where Cummins will be much more into the equation.

Probably, Pom's only chance left is to win toss and bat first at MCG, otherwise 5-0 certain, because I don't see ENG handling Lyon at SCG even batting first.

England ahead 60-40.

Convict you would have probably won by now had you enforced the follow on :))

Yeah but attending day 5 is a gold coin donation to charity and we are a very charitable lot.
