What's new

Australia [442/8d & 138] defeat England [227 & 233] by 120 runs to go 2-0 up in The Ashes

Don't see Poms chasing 300 versus Austrlian attack. Need to show some fight. England won't want to be all out cheaply in 4th innings.

It would be good to get close-ish to restore some pride. If they collapse in flames yet again then they lose any momentum they will have built up from the bowling.

I agree. If England are chasing about 300 and fall just short it will give them some confidence for the next game.

Australia will make another 150 runs from here, cant see them folding for less. Worth mentioning it seems the action always happens in the last session when the sun goes down.

Eng will be batting in the final session,

If we're still in the game though then chances are the Aussies will only have the old ball under lights.

Heart hopes for Australia skittles out under a 100, and a successful chase with Root and Bairstow taking ENG home. Less ideally, Australia bat till dinner and throw England in with 450 to get and England tough out a draw.

Head says Australia bat till dinner. England fold even if they survive till the newish ball on Day 5 under lights. can't survive two twilight periods with the newish ball over 4 sessions.

If ENG lose here, they'll get whooped in Perth and the humiliation will nearly be complete. Even if Stokes comes back, this attack can't take 60 wickets.

More realistically, Wood will play in the warmup before Perth, and get plonked around for 4 an over there.
I hope my head is wrong.

Hoping for a Aussie collapse just like they did last ear vs South Africa and the numerous times before that.

Would be one of the most epic comebacks that usually always happens in Adelaide.

Keep the batting 2nd always wins in day night Adelaide matches alive!

Bogan Aussie pacers could break down anytime soon too

Chasing 300+ is going to be very tough on any pitch. It is not going to be easy for England. Those games you are talking about had pretty low totals for the batting team to chase in the 4th innings. India I guess chased 230 odd but other games I remember which was won by the team batting last was under 200 targets.

Michael Vaughan just said "You don't chase 300 in 50-60 overs"

Boycott talking sense again.

Decision was rightly overturned. Root having a cry about it doesn't make a difference.

I hate seeing Peter Handscomb score runs, with that french cricket technique of his.
It annoys me further that Pakistan gave this guy his career.

People said the same about Smith. Handscomb is quality and he will score runs.

More seriously, what do you make of Handscomb seemingly changing his technique ever delivery?

Punter thinks he is making life difficult for himself.

Just making him change the line. A lot of these are still analyzing players with traditional technique in mind. You'd think Smith would've taught them something.

Obviously, this is not Handscomb's final technique that he's going to settle with. He's still discovering himself like young Smith who used to experiment quite a lot. Used to hear the same commentary then.

Oh I dont deny that. Smith spoke after they had lost five tests on the trot (3 in Sri Lanka and 2 against South Africa) that he wanted players with heart. Handscomb has heart, but i still hate his technique, and would be happy at the prospect of his playing in England in a wet summer.

Handscomb is an atrocious player. That vastly inflated average will fall every series. Probably the worst batsman in the Aussies lineup including the tailenders.

Come back in a couple of years and say that again. He’s a quality player, who is simply out of form and still discovering his technique.

The pitch still has quite a lot of moisture to be seaming like that. Ideally, England would wanna be batting 2nd session to play out the new ball before night.

More than happy to review the topic again in a couple of years, but 18 years of watching cricket is telling me that this guy can’t play!

Well clearly you haven’t learned much from those 18 years of watching cricket.

I trust what my eyes tell me, they are very useful instruments and usually right. I would be very surprised if Handscomb makes a success of himself in Test cricket in the longer term, events will play themselves out and we will see who was right.

Respect for Anderson. He's bowling beautifully here. He's been a wonderful bowler throughout the last seven years but is unlucky to be playing in the era of Steyn.

Anyone else missing the insightful commentary of Atherton?

What's going on here? Australia choking or are the English bowling really well?

7 down for 90, this has been a really shoddy 2nd innings for Australia, whatever the result of the game the batters will get some criticism for this effort I’m sure.

Was it wise not to enforce the follow on? Australia may have wrapped this game up by now if they did :13:

Probably. Conditions are still good though. A lot of overcast so moisture will remain in the pitch. It will only get worse at night.

Surely Cummins has done enough with the bat to warrant batting ahead of Starc.

Moral victory for England perhaps?

Respect for Jimmy - one of very few left in the game with true skills. He'll break McGrath's record.

Does Jimmy deserves a Knighthood for his services to the game?

Should end-up with over 140 Tests, 550+ wickets in 16 years of career, close to or over 1000 FC wickets - surely he is one from this generation.

Look at this northern conspiracy between Root and Anderson to deny Woakes a five wicket haul :mv

Good effort from England's bowlers.

But this is too much for their batting order to chase down.

Time for the big question to be answered, can ATG Cook or potential GOAT Root manage to overtake Moeen "Can't score runs in Oz" Ali as England's highest run scorer in this series?

What is he talking about? Isn’t this 4th day only?

His point was that England needed to concentrate on batting for a long time to chase whatever target they ended up with, rather than trying to be aggressive and attacking.

Funny thing is, he hasn't been dismissed by the pacers even once this series and two of his three dismissals have been pretty unlucky ones.

Quite disappointed with his bowling though, even though history suggests I shouldn't. Thought he would pick up more than two wickets by now.

He has heart, and mediocre test bowling in the modern era on his side.
truly truly awful technique

He missed a tour game because of a side strain and then ripped open his spinning finger. He's far from 100% at the moment which is why he's not getting the same kind of action on the ball as he does when he's bowling well.

Hopefully a week off between now and the third test will help him recover because England need him to perform if they want to win a couple of tests.

Spraygun Starc, does anyone really think he;s the best pacer in the world :))

Cummins is the best pacer from Aus, outbowled Strac & Josh on his trip to India & Bangla, did the same at Gabba. Rabada though, for me, is the best pacer in the world across formats, on current form.

Come on England! 4-1 still a possibllity!

Still expect Aus to win, the next session will be decisive.

Fifty up. Chef and Stoney average just 21 together so this is an improvement.

The darkness and the dew is coming..... but the ball will not be new......

Chef doing what he does best. England need a slow hundred from him.
