Australia [442/8d & 138] defeat England [227 & 233] by 120 runs to go 2-0 up in The Ashes

Bro, even the commentators said that looked dead on to hit the stumps.

They mentioned the carry of subsequent 2 balls and sort of agreed that pitch has quickened and has got extra bounce. So they did not say it is wrong. Also batsman was down the pitch.

Never said it was wrong but just seemed plumb from the naked eye.

Anderson is gonna lose his hair by the end of the innings. He’s smiling but he must be fuming.

Now the umpire is afraid he’s gonna make the wrong decision again. :smith

Gaffaney is having a shocker.

He gave another one that has to be be overturned. This one was even higher.

You'd have thought the umpire would have learnt from the first one!

Pitch has quickened with more bounce. It will be fun for England as well.

Root probably has grown his beard for 6 months and still looks like a kid.

To be fair the first one looked out to pretty much everyone.

Whoever was behind the idea of bowling first (& opting to chase against Lyon), must be scratching head now. This is the same ground, where Lyon had 12 wickets against a team probably in spin playing ranking 5 of them will come ahead of Cook ....... Surprising, but Aussies has gone for a different strategy this time - they are grinding for long and taking steam out of aged Pom attack. If this pair can take AUS to 125 overs, I think Aussie tail will blast against tiered attack and someone should break down in 2nd innings.

This is the time of inning where these two teams differ. Aussies will grind out 100 more and English will not score more than 50 after 6th wicket.

Though their depth is more reputed .........

Why do England think 4 identical right arm fast medium bowlers is any way to select a TEST attack?

4 won't do what 3 can't. They have the allrounder in Moeen so why not use the 4th bowler spot for a bowler of the type who routinely clean up tails- e.g. an express quick or a leggy (both a proven success as a type in Australia where conditions suit those 2 styles).

England bowling a foot too short again (Adelaide bounces now with the extra grass) due to negative, conservative nature of their selections, cricket & mindset.

Thought adelaide will be poms best chance but another embarrassing defeat looming

Eng still has the superior tale i reckon but bolwers make the difference here

Ausis tale are facing some toothless trundles whilst eng playing to save their life against raw paced ausis trio

Looking ominous here, Australia could win this within 4 days.

Cannot believe how Marsh wasn't out LBW when he was around 20 odd. The DRS showed the ball was going over the stumps which I found quite ridiculous. It was as plumb as it could come. Michael Clarke on air couldn't believe it either.

Sometimes the ball tracker - very occasionally - will get it wrong. Not saying it did or didn’t happen here, but it may have done.

There seems to be a lot of chatter today from particularly the English commies but also a bit from the Aussies about how England are not getting the rub of the green in this match, however you make your own luck by creating more and more opportunities, and what I would also say is that there are three innings left in the match and England could end up getting a lovely run of fortune later on.

On a side note, I can’t remember a home series where Australia have scored more slowly. Not sure what this means exactly, but tours of Australia are famous for the Aussies booming the ball around the ground and demoralising exhausted touring bowlers by belting them to the boundary once or twice every over - it hasn’t happened yet.

england's bowlers have been disgustingly one dimensional since i started watching cricket. sick off the 4th stump line meme. sick of all these trundlers. just hit the stumps. flintoff is the only bowler we have ever had who offered something different with those hooping inswinging yorkers

Yes, England have been disciplined & organised- hence the slow scoring

but very conservative in both selection & length- they don't look like taking 20 wickets, insist on selecting 4 identical right arm medium fasts & bowling short of a length. They have a leggy on tour who they will never pick- preferring to "control" the way to a today, organised, slow defeat instead of picking a bowler who might take some wickets & run through a tail.

Even Freddies statistics are pants because he spent most of his career bowling a "macho length" which deviated way past the bat or sailed over the stumps because it was so short, but it looked great going into the keepers gloves at chest high.

Because the quicks are all broken down. It’s annoying to see them bowl too short. Anderson and Broad have 900 wickets between them and should know better. They are beating the bat but not getting the edges.

I said the legspinner should have played here.

Now England will have to bat in the murk, the Aussie quicks will pitch it up and get the nicks.

Yes.

The only glimmer of hope is Smith’s conservatism: he should declare at Dinner to bowl when the light is changing rapidly.

But he might keep going after Dinner, especially if Marsh hasn’t yet reached 100.

If you bowl FM at the stumps, test batsmen work you through midwicket. England are bowling the correct line. Their length is the problem.

I said before the tour that four FMs and a offie won’t work here.

Should declare at 400 with Shaun Marsh scoring a 100. The bowlers can collapse England under 200 after that.

England could have added one bowler with some serious pace in their squad. I have heard that Jamie Overton is pretty quick so he could have been preferred over his brother though he bowled well but its a team game and a good combination makes a big difference.

Mark Footitt who has been almost selected many times could have played this time around and would have given a left arm angle to the attack.

That is if they wanted to play 4 fast bowlers to start with otherwise Crane was in the squad for his leg spin.

Moin's finger problem has impacted his bowling quite a bit it seems.

what on earth....think its this kind of thinking that is costing us

Still remain convinced by my pre-series scoreline prediction of 4-1 to Australia. I think England will come good and play well at either Melbourne or Sydney, and will win one of those matches, but otherwise the series will belong to Australia. It is all unfolding as I expected so far - I should have bet five quid on it really.

Heard Overton has a attitude problem :)))

I wouldn't mind if he was bowling in the 140's, but mate your barely bowling 130 km/h- you shouldn't be all over with your ego when your trundling at such a level.

History says it will take an almighty test of skill & resolve for your openers to withstand Starc & co under lights one a deck which is reasonably bouncy (if tennis ball & not yet terrifying) offering mild assistance all day & may well juice up a bit at night.

To be fair, are Wood & Finn injured (Finn is sometimes express) & both could be asked to crank it up for 2-4 over spells in a 4 man seam attack.

Hope root play a quality knock to save his life, already the lad is getting too much condemnations for bowling first

I have no faith against cook if eng bats under light against starc and hash

Surely Australia have to declare during the dinner break? They want the whole session under lights with a newer ball, don’t they?

If England remain in the field for any of the following session, their tactic should be to slow the game down as much as possible and reduce the number of overs they will have to face in the dark.

I thought we could win in Adelaide but now it looks like five-zip again.

Batted Son of Swampy. Way back when I was an undergraduate I heard his Dad bring up an Ashes ton against Dilley, Small, Botham, Edmonds and Emburey.

no way in hell if the sun's out

Sun is irrelevant. England won on the Strauss tour by burying Australia in runs and applying scoreboard pressure. Even Bresnan got a fivefer. Now their batting is the weakest in.... well, it’s England’s weakest ever.

no it isn't. teams are different now. this england team isnt beating this australian side in normal aussie conditions

Aussies declare. Anderson and Co left with more moral victories than wickets.

Starc and Cummins can hit 92MPH easily, different class to our guys. Even Hazelwood who is more metronomic can hit 90MPH with his effort balls.

England 29-1 and rain stops play. With 19 overs under lights left to play and these now being eaten into by the weather, that’s the first bit of luck for England all day. I actually thought that England batted quite well there, they’ve been positive, but Stoneman got a good fast ball from Starc.

Wow, England being brutalised. They shouldn't bother playing away from home. Pathetic, weak, mental midgets.

Yet another 5-0 beckons. Becoming a familiar result when England tour Australia. The Ashes in Australia becoming a borefest.

And they know to pitch it up, not this back-of-a-legth nonesense which England bowled, beating the bat all day but never getting any nicks. At 90 mph you can get away with a half-volley too, while at 82 mph you get driven down the ground.

I said 4-0 or 5-0 and English fans got emotional. :))

Even Stokes won't make a difference.

They are none of those things. But they lack the experience and the right skills to prosper here. There are not many test quality players coming through - how many partners for Cook have been tried since Strauss finished - eight, nine? Four FMs is the wrong strategy. There are quick bowlers but they keep getting injured. Moeen was never going to take wickets in Australia.

This would be a more combative side:

Cook
Stoneman
Root (capt.)
Bairstow
Moeen
Stokes (if he comes back)
Foakes (w)
Broad
Plunkett (would add some pace)
Anderson
Crane

Roughly 290 overs left in the game, unless it rains further, so I guess there will be winner in this Test & Pom’s chances for saving the Test looking marginal. In recent times, Adelaide has been a chasing ground (more wins batting 2nd), but here that call of Root was poor.

Which ones got emotional? There's only me and James and Junaids. All of us predicted a massacre.

Stokes would have been quite capable of hitting a blistering 150 somewhere, and taking five wickets somewhere else. I predicted 1-4 if he was playing and 0-4 or 0-5 otherwise.

That's no excuse, at the end of the day these boys have been selected to represent England and they need to show some bottle; when you get rolled over in such an emphatic fashion then experience, skills etc shouldn't be the first thing we get a look at, they may well be factors but qualities such as grit, determination, mental toughness and hard work are of equal importance; England at the moment lack those, even with the said skills and experience they would have failed.

Nothing like genuine pacers going all out in a night session. Still remember Australia decimating us in Brisbane on a bouncy pitch. The ball was flying and seaming. They would've run through any team that night. Our hopeless geezers had no chance.

The rain saved eng under the lights with the new ball

Tomorrow is another day, dig in and bat all day minimum

Anyone from cook or root need to play a huge inngs to save this

Australia are ahead in this game. Cook or Root needs to go on and score big for Poms to have a chance in the game.

And Englands were happy at the end of day 1

when I saw 205-5 day 2 morning or something like that
i still had Australia ahead in the game
