Australia [467 & 168/5d] defeat New Zealand [148 & 240] by 247 runs to win 2nd Test; Seal series 2-0

Day 2: 3rd Session - New Zealand trail by 428 runs

Kane sucks these days.

Falling away like Joe Root.

Williamson has always failed in the majority of countries, but his superior temperament allows him to score bigger runs than Root.

In terms of versatility and the ability to adapt to a variety of conditions, Root is better in my opinion. Williamson’s technique is good for show only, but he is difficult to dismiss when he is in his comfort-zone.

2 down, good thing is our two best batsmen are still there.

I don't rate boult as I find him overrated. He is a good bowler but he is very condition specific just like Anderson.

In saying that I have to say boult has the most beautiful bowling action him have ever seen in my life.

Boult, Bond, Anderson, Imran, Waqar. My 5 favorite bowling actions.

Day 2: Stumps - New Zealand trail by 423 runs

Man this Australian bowling attack is extremly difficult to score against.

You have prime Stark, Prime Cummins, Prime Lyon and Pattinson himself is a world class bowler as well.

One of the best bowling attacks of all time.

Day 2: New Zealand trail by 423 runs with 8 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

That is stumps !!!

Great day of cricket

Steady the ship should be given a break for the Indian series, he's a walking wicket against good teams in this form.

If Will Young is back, give him a go against India and have Watling lead the team.

And now starc suddenly is wayward with the ball.
And it just happens that Cummins and Pattinson are back to being aus's best bowlers.

It's as if it is impossible for all 3 of them to reach form at the same time.

Kind of like the trilema in economics,

On home grounds, yes. How do they fare in Asia and the UAE?

Against this Australian bowling you must wear them out for 40 overs then you can make runs. This Aussie attack is less lethal with old ball. Even the likes of Yasir, Rizwan made runs.

Australia captain Tim Paine blasted cricket's Decision Review System (DRS) Friday, saying it left him "disappointed and angry" after he was dismissed controversially in the second Test against New Zealand. Paine played one of his best innings and was on track to score a maiden Test century when he was removed lbw by Neil Wagner for 79 after New Zealand reviewed the umpire's original not out decision. He was asked about the DRS by broadcaster ABC afterwards and replied: "Don't start."

"I thought from the length that it pitched, and the bloke bowling around the wicket, it's pretty difficult to hit you in line, and hit the stumps," he said of the delivery.

Some commentators agreed that it was hard to see how Wagner's ball could have cut back into Paine so much, struck him in line and gone on to hit middle stump.

Paine's disappointment was compounded by New Zealand's Ross Taylor surviving a review late in the day after initially being given out lbw. The ball looked to be hitting the stumps but the tracking technology showed it going over.

"And then you get one late tonight which, the guy's stuck on the crease, he's hit really full and it's going over, so it's disappointing and it makes me angry," said Paine.

"I've got a few doubts, no doubt about that," he added of the technology's accuracy.

"I won't go into it too far because I'll get in trouble but I'm just seeing time and time again, what I see to the naked eye, or watching it on television in real time, and then what it comes up is sometimes a little bit off the mark."

Shoddy stuff from Williamson with that shot and bowling the pacers into the ground. Did he not watch the India match last year? Batting first is the way to go. It is up to Taylor and Latham again.

What happens to us when we visit Australia? It is like we undergo a lobotomy.

Poor start one again with bat by kiwis. KW might aswell open with kiwis having no decent openers.

With the way Kane is batting, he should be used to shield the others from the new ball.

Blundell looked a lot better than Kane out there and could have scored runs against the older ball in the middle order.

Blundell is not an opener, he did fairly well and looked pretty good for his 15.

'I think he struggles': Ian Chappell unconvinced by Travis Head's technique despite MCG ton, backs T

Australian cricket legend Ian Chappell is yet to be convinced by Travis Head's technique despite the middle-order batsman's century thrusting Australia into a commanding lead on day two of the Boxing Day Test.

It was the South Australian's moment in the sun at the MCG on Friday as he announced himself on the Test stage with his most meaningful score (114) to date.

Head's sparking knock, which included 12 boundaries, ensured the hosts wore down New Zealand before they were thrown to a frenzied Australian attack by day's end.

With his spot in the side in question before the match, Head converted his ninth score above 50 into his second Test hundred and cemented his spot in Australia's middle order for some time.

However, Chappell was hesitant to jump the gun on the 25-year-old, and highlighted some glaring weakness he needed to improve on moving forward.

"He's an aggressive player, that's probably the best thing about his batting," Chappell exclusively told Wide World of Sports. "All you can do is make runs get a century and that's a good thing.

"I've still got some queries about his technique though. I think he's got a few holes around off-stump. I think he struggles against good short pitch bowling. I wouldn't say he's wasteful, at times I would say a little careless, but not wasteful."

"But I think he's worked on a few of them and at least trying to get better. A century will get you three games I reckon, but calls of future captain, he's still got a long way to go there. Cement your place in the team first then worry about captaincy."

Tim Paine recorded a quick-fire 79 off 138 deliveries to shake the run-making critics off his back when he was summoned to the crease in place of Steve Smith.

Talk of youngster Alex Carey challenging the skipper for his place behind the stumps has surfaced throughout the summer but Chappell was emphatic in his bemusement, particularly after today's stint.

"I don't think he's threatened by Alex Carey," Chappell said.

"Any talk of dropping Tim Paine is ridiculous at the moment. I thought he played the short pitch deliveries better than anybody else in the Australian side today. So, I don't concur with people who are talking about Carey being a threat to him at the moment.

"His first job is to keep well and I think he's doing that. I haven't seen anything that indicates he needs to be replaced as a keeper. The runs he gets on top of that is a bonus."

By contrast Aussie talisman Steve Smith never looked settled at the crease despite creeping to hard earned 85.

Chappell was assured the 'best since Bradman' would find a solution to his batting woes, but believed for the meantime Neil Wagner had his number.

He's a battler but he's been sorted out a bit, particularly by Wagner with the short pitch delivery," Chappell said.

"But you see with Steve Smith that when he's posed with a problem he tends to come up with a solution. But he hasn't found a solution to Wagner yet.

"Wagner bowls it pretty accurately but the New Zealand attack lacks a lot of potency. They've got nothing at all in the spin bowling department. That hurts them.

"So I think it's been pretty average. When you're taking 150 overs to bowl an opposition out, you're always going to struggle to win cricket matches."

Australia are far too strong for New Zealand. New Zealand don’t have the intensity and mentality to beat Australia consistently.

Yes Pak was poor as expected because they were a low ranked team but NZ isnt doing any better either as they are no 2 in tests and playing against no 5 ranked test team.

Greatest NZ team ever lol.

Embarrassing, an Aussie state team would have put up more fight.

Zero excuses, all of them outside Wagner, Taylor and CdG should be disappointed.

Steve Smith overdoing athleticism a bit, ball was coming straight to Burns at a good height and he dived to catch the ball from the front of Burns.

Openers set the tone. I keep saying this. Teams that have poor openers will look worse than they actually are. Famous England series win in Australia was due to Alistair cook the opener. Same way back in the 80s chris broad made 3 centuries as opener. If you want to win Tests you need good openers. At worst good no.3. It doesn't matter if you have Tendulkar, Lara at no.4, if openers fail team invariably struggles.

Watling has to produce a special innings to save kiwis here. But Aussies have smelled blood , very dangerous bowling

This is terrible from NZ. Not even good enough to save a test match.

Agreed. Though Latham has been decent in last couple of years but not sure why is Blundell opening exactly.

Latham is similar to Azhar Ali. Very defensive mindset. Clearly a reason why he wasn't catching eyes during the past 1.5 years when he had good run.

Have to say Pakistan put up a much better fight against Australia (and they looked awful at the time)

Bar South Africans and Indians every team has been smashed in Australia in past 5-6 years.

Not even one win from England, Kiwis, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans or Windies.

The results since 2013 are:-

England 0-9(10)
Pakistan 0-5(5)
West Indies 0-2(3)
New Zealand 0-3(4)
Sri Lanka 0-5(5)

India 3-3(8)
SA 3-1(6)

so? Pattinson or hazelwood for the next game though?

toothless kiwis. useless. Should always be demoted to a 2 test nation when touring australia specifically. They always lose there.

In saying that n.z are mighty strong in their home too. Wonder if current Aussie team can beat n.z in n.z

Sorry bro can't agree with you here. Two test match series is a joke no matter how bad a team is playing. Top 8-9 nations should always play minimum of three match series.

:out

six down , its a matter of time now , Kiwis have been hit by exceptional bowling here.

Latham had to work very hard for his runs today. He should atleast get past fifty. Should look to take more strikes vs Lyon.

Did get his fifty but didn't go past it. He listened to you fifty percent and completed his fifty.

NZ are not playing well but this is some serious bowling by Australia. Just relentless by the 3 quicks.

Yes, great bowling. So many times they beat the edge. I think the pitch is not as easy as Australia made it out to be. But 3 of their top 4 batsmen shared the responsibility. Lower order cashed in.

This is neither a 124/9 pitch nor a 447 pitch. Sides are not evenly matched. So scoreline difference looks alot worse

The Aussies are just too good for us.

Cummins was unreal and never let up with his line and length.

Pakistan play better than NZ in Australia recently .really pathetic from kiwi as I was expecting a cracking series but it's not even mans vs boys contest .
