Australia [534/5d & 196/3d] beat Sri Lanka [215/9 & 149] by 366 runs in 2nd Test to win series 2-0

Australia captain Tim Paine on Thursday announced an unchanged team to face Sri Lanka at Canberra’s Manuka Oval in the series-decider, starting Friday.

That means Stoinis and Pucovski will end the international summer of cricket without baggy greens, and with a massive dent in their Ashes aspirations.

Pucovski is particularly left stranded, as he will remain ineligible to play English county cricket given he has never represented his nation at senior level, nor does he hold a British passport.

He was confined on Thursday to running laps of Manuka Oval in 30-plus degree heat, in the company of a Cricket Australia staff member. The pair appeared in deep discussion during the first lap, before breaking into a jog and completing about half a dozen laps of the boundary.

The 20-year-old was controversially left out of the first Test, with cricket greats Shane Warne and Michael Vaughan both slamming the decision.

Warne said Australia had “missed a trick”, while Vaughan called it an “an opportunity missed” for the “talked-of best young batsman the Aussies have produced for many years”.

Instead, Kurtis Patterson was rushed into the squad off the back of consecutive pink ball centuries against Sri Lanka in a tour match.

All-rounder Stoinis will also be left out after selectors didn’t feel the need to provide a fifth bowling option.

He impressed on his way to 30 on Test debut and has been retained in the side, while opener Joe Burns has been given another chance despite making just 15 in Brisbane.

Meanwhile, the faith has been restored in quick Mitchell Starc who will have another chance to recapture his best form in a lacklustre summer - keeping journeyman Peter Siddle on the sidelines.

All-rounder Stoinis will also be left out after selectors didn’t feel the need to provide a fifth bowling option, despite what is expected to be a batting-friendly surface at Manuka Oval.

Stoinis spent most of the Thursday afternoon session standing by, chatting to various other players and staff members. He was then pulled aside for a deep conversation with Langer next to the centre wicket, which lasted a few minutes.

At the same time, fielding coach Brad Haddin took the slips cordon through some drills, while a couple of batsmen spent time in the nets outside Manuka Oval.

Australia holds a 1-0 lead in the two match series, needing just a draw in Canberra to lift the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy.

The piece of silverware would be Australia’s first in Test cricket since January 2018, and the first under the leadership of both Paine and Justin Langer.

Australia XI: Marcus Harris, Joe Burns, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, Kurtis Patterson, Tim Paine, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Jhye Richardson

Two of SL opening bowlers from first test are out with injury. This is not looking good for SL. Australia bats first.

Infact all 3 seamers out with injury lol This is as bad as it gets. Losing 3 of your bowlers.

No idea about their replacement bowlers. If they are no good, SL's only chance in this test is trying to put up a big total in the first innings.

How low has Australian cricket fallen... Usman Khawaja is their no.3 lmao

For Australia sake it would be good to see one of their players score a ton this game. Pathetic that not one player in their team has scored a ton during this home season.

Tim paine is too dumb to bat first here. They could still go on to win the test. Knowing well how crappy guys like Khawaja are why do you want to bat first.

There is absolutely no discipline from batsmen in Tests. West Indies openers showed immense discipline against a much more challenging bowling quality today.

Debutant picks a wicket first over. 3 down. Australia is in great trouble. All 3 bowlers are moving ball away from the right handers.

If this Australian side had played in Windies they would have been rolled over for 77 as well lol.

IT was a horrendous decision by Paine to bat first. 13 degree cg, overcast condition. Credit ot SL for fully exploiting. All 3 bowlers were swinging the ball around.

Poor decision for sure, but Aus may still put enough to win this test.

Might possibly win this as well and get the series done.

Who knew selecting someone who scores runs in Shield cricket can actually get you runs in the international stage?

Flat deck , below par bowling attack . 358/4 & ten overs left . Wonder if they will declare at 500 .

Australia end Day 1 of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka on a massive 384/4 (87.0 Ovs) CRR: 4.41! Joe Burns is 172* whilst Travis Head hit 161;

The following quotes can be attributed to Cricket Australia Doctor, Dr Richard Saw:

“Will Pucovski has been released from the Men's Test squad and will return home to Melbourne to continue managing his wellbeing.”

“He reported some challenges over the past few days, and the decision has been made that the best thing for Will’s welfare is for him to return home to Melbourne.”

“Will has been proactive in this process and while he has made significant progress, he feels this is the best course of action to get ready to play cricket for Victoria.”

“He worked closely with members of his family, Cricket Australia medical staff and Cricket Victoria to reach his decision.”

“Will’s decision to speak up and continue to ask for assistance in managing his ongoing mental health is extremely positive.”

"Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria will continue to support Will, and we kindly ask that Will’s privacy is respected so he can continue working towards a return to Premier Cricket and the next round of First Class

But for those easy catch drops scoreline would have been very different. Maybe 300/6 or something.

When it rains it pours. They were desperately looking for someone to get to 100 for a long time. Now 3 centurines in one innings. Patterson after getting dropped ot 0 made the most of it.

If you guys remember Philip Hughes was also hit on the neck which caused the artery split open and bleed.

Cricket Australia have given this update on Karunaratne: "Dimuth complained of pain in neck and tingling to his hands following being struck in the back of the neck, decision then made to transport him to hospital where he is currently being assessed. Updates will be provided when more is known."

Sri Lanka fightback to reach 123/3 at Stumps on Day 2 of the 2nd Test against Australia; The visitors still have a long way to go to make the match safe as they trail by 411 runs; D. Karunaratne retired hurt on 46* & L. Thirimanne scored 41

Patterson seems to be a good find. Never understood why Burns was dropped in the 1st place but he should have been selected for the Indian tests.

Burns
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Head
Patterson

Looks a good top 6 for the Ashes. England not looking so settled. Should be a good series.

Burns, Head, Patterson- everyone is looking like a good find when playing against this bowling attack.:asif

Just shows how good Indian batters were while playing the same Aussie quickies in Australia.

Every bowler looks like trundlers while facing inform Pujara and Kohli.

Dimuth Karunaratne, the Sri Lanka opener, was stretchered off the ground after a bouncer from Pat Cummins hit him on the back of the neck late on the second day of the Canberra Test.

He has now been released from hospital, to the relief of Sri Lankans and cricket fans alike, and Cricket Sri Lanka has released a statement regarding his status.

"Dimuth has been discharged from Canberra hospital following assessment and all cleared. A further update will be provided on his playing status tomorrow prior to play," the statement read.

The incident occurred in the 31st over of the Sri Lankan innings. Cummins' angled bouncer was clocked at 142 kmph, and despite Karunaratne's attempts to move away from the line of the ball, he couldn't evade it.

He immediately fell to the ground and required lengthy treatment from the medical staff of both teams. They were quick to attend to the batsman, and he was seen speaking and moving his hands on the field.

He was put in a neck brace, and stretchered off the ground before being moved to the emergency van, which rushed him to the hospital.

Cricket Australia then provided an update on Twitter, saying, "Dimuth complained of pain in neck and tingling to his hands following being struck in the back of the neck, decision then made to transport him to hospital where he is currently being assessed. Updates will be provided when more is known."

Karunaratne looked solid in the middle during his 84-ball knock. He scored 46 runs, and had carried Sri Lanka to 82/0 in response to Australia's first-innings total of 534/5 declared.

After Karunaratne retired hurt, Sri Lanka lost three wickets before stumps, and finished the day on 123/3, trailing Australia by 411 runs.

Pujara got hit on the knuckles numerous times especially on the uneven MCG pitch which was borderline dangerous. But he never once turned his head back. But Marcus Harris floored twice getting hit on the helmet. If you ask me you should rather take it on the helmet despite jarring rather than exposing your neck to the fast ball. In this case Karuna has a bit of protection for neck as well. If that were not to be the case things could have gone ugly. I remember once Akhtar hit Dhoni's neck on the flush with a beamer i think. Lucky for him it didn't catch the artery.

Richardson to MDKJ Perera, no run, he's hit flush on the helmet ducking into it! It was another quick short ball, angled in, it doesn't get up, he ducks straight into it, it hits the grill of the helmet. The neck protector attachment flies off but goes wide of the stumps. He's fine. Doesn't go to ground. Richardson checks on him. He says he's OK. The doctor is now out there. He'll be fine to continue here but is getting a new helmet.

after few balls

Kusal Perera has called for the doctor to come out. Maybe he's had a delayed reaction to the hit on the helmet. Delayed concussion is not uncommon. He wants to keep going. The doctor is having a stern discussion with him. He has put his helmet on and will keep going.

after few balls

Perera is walking off. He looks very unwell. The doctor races out to help him off. He will retire hurt here. So Perera retires hurt and Dimuth Karunaratne will return after retiring hurt yesterday. Amazing scenes. Karunaratne gets warm applause as he walks out

Hit wicket against a bouncer. Looks like after two to retired hurts Srilankans are understandably circumspect against short stuffs. Starc's speed finally is helping him. If the current England faces this attack they will be sh**ing in their pants. This is some serious hostile stuff on a docile track.

Or it's just that the sri lankan batsmen are inept.
They just can't bat

We saw the likes of Joe root against Johnson not long ago. They were so bad that Trott left midway through the tour. That was jsut one guy. Here we see Richardson, Cummins, Starc all bowling hostile stuff.

Khawaja is proving his uselessnes more and more lol Put dickwella down in the slips earlier. Gotta feel for Srilankans

Hostile bowling spell just needed to be seen off. Bowlers can't bowl that way too long.

They are bullying Srilanka big time with short stuff I don't say they are bad. they are mentally scared so they camp on the back foot. Bit like how Johnson got into the head of England few seasons back. You just have to win the mental battle first. This could happen to any team. Ideally you should weave rather than duck against these guys if you could. Ducking didn't exactly help these guys.

Australia declare 515 ahead . Good to see Paine wanting to bowl a few today .

Lot of respect for SL cricket. But with injuries around this match is a mismatch. Poor guys.
