LAHORE: Showing full control over the final selection, Pakistan head coach Roelant Oltmans made six changes in the squad from the Commonwealth Games to announce the 18-member team for the upcoming Champions Trophy Men’s hockey tournament to be held in Breda, Netherlands from June 23 to July 1.

Chief selector Olympian Islah-ud-Din Siddiqi recommended the names of 22 players for the training camp which has been in progress in Netherlands for the last couple of weeks. But Oltmans reduced the list to 18 after watching the performance of the players in the training camp.

Sources said Oltmans was not happy with the 18-member team announced by Islah for the Games held in Gold Coast, Australia in April this year and the Dutchman had already informed the Pakistan Hockey Federation that in future he would pick the 18-member team. Currently, Islah is in the US and therefore, has no link with the ongoing training camp in Breda.

Oltmans preferred to call back seniors players to oust a good number of juniors. And among them is half-back Rashid Mahmood, forwards Umar Bhutta and Aijaz Ahmed, midfielder Azfar Yaqoob, defender Aleem Bilal and goalkeeper Amjad Ali. Goalkeeper Mazhar Abbas, Tazeem-ul-Hasan, Mohammad Arshad, Faisal Qadir, Dilber, and Rana Sohail faced the axe.

Unde Oltmans, the national team showed some improved performances as it remained unbeaten in the Commonwealth Games after playing three drawn matches against Wales (1-1), India (2-2) and England (2-2). The performance gave the head coach a powerful position as far as the selection affairs are concerned.

Pakistan’s performance in Gold Coast was also an improvement to their high-scoring defeats, especially at the hands of India in the previous tournaments.

However, the Champions Trophy, which is the last one in its 40-year-history, will be Oltman’s first test as Pakistan coach and that too in his home country.

Meanwhile, Rizwan Senior has been retained as captain, who is junior to Rashid Mahmood, Irfan Senior and Umar Bhutta.

Pakistan squad:

M.Rizwan Sr (captain), Imran Butt, Amjad Ali, M.Irfan Sr, Mubashir Ali, Aleem Bilal, Ammad Shakeel Butt, Touseeq Arshad, Rashid Mahmood, Tasawar Abbas, Abu Bakar, M.Irfan Jr, Arslan Qadir, Umar Bhutta, Shafqat Rasool, Ali Shan, Azfar Yaqoob, Aijaz Ahmed.

Manager: Hasan Sardar, Head Coach: Roelant Oeltmans, Assistant Coaches: M.Saqlain and Rehan Butt.

It will be a close contest. Pakistan has prepared well and we have a professional coach this time. India is also coming with its full strength squad.

Why are there always jr. and sr. in field hockey? Are there so many with same names?

Jr is usually used when the father passes down his own name to the son because it is simply too cool or great a name to change. If unrelated players with similar names are present then its usually name (1), name (2) etc.

Yes that is what usually happens but that is not the case with our team. Jr and Sr is being used to distinguish unrelated players with similar names on the basis of seniority.

Didn't know that. Seniority culture prevails. :hafeez2:sanga

FIHs website is saying that Tensports will show CT matches in Pakistan. There is a football WC match at the same time as Pak vs Ind match so fingers crossed.

Pakistan vs India match today at 5PM PST. Hopefully, the boys do well.

First Quarter done and dusted.
Ind 0 - 0 Pak
India missed a penalty corner.

To all those wondering how to watch, you can watch it on FIH's YT channel. Just need to use a VPN if you are in Pakistan, my server is germany.

The indian commentator is just horrible. Struggling in terms of his english speech.

Both team were neck to neck, Pakistan unfortunate to concede a goal.

Pak Goal!!!!
India referred.
And umpire says Not goal.
Ind 1 - 0 Pak

Back to back attack by Pakistan, but somehow they are unable to score.

Any decent team would have scored 2-3 goals against this Indian defence.
Australia will murder this defence.

Frustrating to watch Pakistan wasting chances after dominating the whole quarter.

Just watched the 3rd quarter and complete dominance by Pakistan which was surprising to see, not sure if India playing their first 11? Pakistan very unlucky not to be ahead after so much pressure on India.

India still ahead 1-0

And India scores again while Pakistan went on all out attack.

Great game to watch though, extremely fast paced and skillful hockey.

4th goal for India.
Removing goalkeeper backfired for Pakistan.

Both sides played their full strength 11. Scoreline do not display the quality of game. Pakistan played poorly in the first two quarters. There was lack of coordination and lack of direct passes into the circle from Pakistan. We came back well in the second and third quarter, created many chances but finishing was lacking. India defence was well organized and solid but their midfield was missing as Pakistan dominated in the center. Indian forward line was the difference between two sides. SV Sunil and co are clinical finishers and are one of the best goal poachers in the game.

first credit to indian defence and goalkeeper, he was very very solid, so respect to him, secondly credit to indian forwards to making their chances count. In terms of possession and pressure Pakistan was doing very well, and had some really good chances, despite the goal being taken away pakistan should have easily had 2 or 3 more goals, best chance came from Umar Bhuttia. This team has improved, alot i can tell you that match, and it does look more organized, they still have a long way to go and changes wont happen over night, but they will get their. The coach has done a very good job. The scoreline does indicate 4-0 but the second goal came from a counter attack, and the third from an empty net goal, again not taking anything away from India, because they made it count. My concern for Pakistan is the keeping imran butt was poor, the first goal could have easily been stopped if he came out of his net more, and the second one he went down to early, he will need to work on that, all in all im still happy with how Pakistan played.

Pakistan has started improving compared to last 2 years, but some players look a little unfit.

Our finishing is poor since last 15 years. It is something we need to improve and it should be worked upon at junior level.

true but their was a point of time within those 15 years were they were not even creating chances to begin with with just try to throw the ball in the circle and hope for a penalty corner, but yes they do need to work on that i agree with that, and junior level needs to be looked into

Its a pity that no TV channel is showing this tournament in Pakistan. Yehi haal rha tou kuch arsey baad hockey ka naam lene wala nahi milega is mulk mein.

Indian thrashed their arch-rivals Pakistan 4-0 in the their Champions Trophy campaign opener at Breda in the Netherlands on Saturday.

The massive victory will help Indian forget the disastrous 2018 Commonwealth Games, where they finished a disappointing fourth.

The win also marked a positive start to India's chief coach Harendra Singh's fourth stint with the senior national side. Harendra took over the reigns of the team after swapping roles with Sjoerd Marijne, following India's dreadful CWG campaign.

The dominating victory can also be looked upon as a sweet revenge for India after Pakistan, which is being coached by former India coach and High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans, scored a late equaliser to eke out a 1-1 draw in Gold Coast.

India cricketer Gautam Gambhir took to twitter to celebrate India's victory. He wrote the victory was a "solid statement."

Apart from the cricketer, women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal, other sportpersons and politicians also congratulated the team on the big win.

Ramandeep Singh opened the scoring for India after gracefully guiding Simranjeet Singh's sideways shot into the goal in the 25th minute. Dilpreet Singh scored his first goal after a meandering run in the 54th minute of the match.

Mandeep Singh scored the third after just three minutes as Lalit Upadhyay finished all hopes for Pakistan comeback when he scored from a sublime Ramandeep pass.

India, eyeing its maiden Champions Trophy title, will play reigning Olympic champions Argentina in their next round-robin league match tomorrow.

The Indians looked a compact side in all departments of the game with the strikers utilising the opportunities that came their way while the defence came up with a superlative show during the entire 60 minutes to keep Pakistani forwards at bay.

The dominating victory also can be looked upon as a sweet revenge for India after Pakistan, which is being coached by former India coach and High Performance Director Roelant Oltmans, scored a late equaliser to eke out a 1-1 draw in Gold Coast.

The Indians started positively and applied pressure on the Pakistani defence from the word go and in the process secured a penalty corner in the 13th minute but Harmanpreet's attempt was saved by goalkeeper Imran Butt.

India got another set piece soon after the start of second quarter but once again wasted the chance.`

But it didn't took long for India to break the deadlock. In the 26th minute Ramandeep deflected in a Simranjeet Singh's reverse pass to start the proceedings.

A minute before half time, an agile Butt once again came to Pakistan's rescue keeping away Vivek Prasad's deflection from top of the circle as went into the break with a slender one goal advantage.

Pakistan, however, came out all guns blazing after the change of ends and dominated the proceedings in the third quarter with repeated raids but failed to break the resolute Indian defence.

Two minutes into third quarter, Ali Shan scored an opportunistic goal but to their dismay found the goal being disallowed for a foul after India's Harmanpreet Singh asked for the referral.

Minutes later, Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh made a fine save to deny Toseeq Arshad.

Pakistan kept up the pressure and earned a penalty corner in the 43rd minute but to no avail. After successfully weathering the storm, India doubled its lead in the 54th minute through 17-year-old Dilpreet, who beautifully picked up a long pass from Simranjeet and then dodged past an onrushing Butt to slot home.

With four minutes to go, Pakistan withdrew its goalkeeper but conceded two more goals.

First Mandeep tucked in an empty net a measured long ball from Varun Kumar and then Lalit dived full stretch to deflect in Ramandeep's pass just at the stroke of hooter to add salt to Pakistan's woes.

India are far better then us at the moment. Would be better if all Pak players would retire.

Should be a good one between Pakistan and Australia today but I don't see how Pakistan can win. Would have to really play out of their skin to salvage a good result.

Stupid comment. Pakistan has improved since we got the new coach. The India - Pak was actually quite close, dont just read the score card.

I only saw the second half against India and Pakistan was playing better hockey than the former atleast in the second half. Attack after attack and then closing down opposition players when not in possession. India's second goal was due to a brisk counter attack after the ball was stolen deep in India's half and third and fourth goals were suicidal after Pak removed goalie in order to get the two goals needed to equalize. Credit to India for defiant defense and sharp counter attacking hockey however Pakistan have only themselves to blame for not capitalizing and finishing the dozens of chances they made. It's the best I've seen our team play in years. It's not surprising they are level with Australia at the moment.

Good to see India winning against Argentina. Can Pakistan close it against Aus and manage a draw?

Australia 2-1 Pakistan FT. That was heartbreaking to watch, we played so well only for a late goal by Australia ):

Pakistan played very well today and give the Australian team a tough time last year I Beleive when these two teams played Aussie won like 9-1 so a big improvement. Again finishing seems to be Pakistans biggest problem I don't remember the player but he had a Janice In front of the net he was all alone and fired it wide, also the last penelty corner chance for Pakistan was dreadful need to make these chances count. In terms of defence it was pretty good and Imran butt goalkeeper was vey solid today I felt he could have stopped the second goal but regardless it was cuz of him we were still in the game. Regardless I'm still happy with what I am seeing from this team

Very good analysis. The team has shown a lot of improvement. I hope the new coach doesnt loses heart and stays.

Arsalan Qadir was the culprit. He missed many open chances today. These forwards lack composure in front of goal and that is because of inexperience of playing in pressure situations. This is where Indian Hockey league has immensely helped Indian players.

Overall, our organization at the back has massively improved, we dominated midfield in both games but its the game in final third which we need to improve. Instead of going down to the corners, we should try to be more direct and play through the middle, quick change of flanks is the way to go in modern hockey and we do not do that often. Our forwards are static, they are not making moves behind the defenders to make space for themselves so as a result midfield has to rely on solo play or short harmless passes.

If 4-0 was close I wonder what you'd consider a thrash. Talk sense.

Agree brother hey need to truly make more space for themselves let's hope for a good result next game

This tournament will be a great preparation for the upcoming Asian games and World cup for Pakistan. The teams involved are the best in the world (except Pakistan :( of course)

Pakistan playing Holland atm....

0-0 is the score now

Hockey is a dying sport in Pakistan. No big names, no heroes. PHF is making a good effort with this coach but I don't know if we will ever rise back again.

I truly wonder if Pakistan will be good at any other sport other than cricket in the coming future. Hockey, squash, badminton etc. were some of the sports where we excelled at in the past. Seems like the glory days have gone.

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) failed to provide mineral water and energy drinks to the players during their stint in Champions Trophy in the Netherlands.

The players, who are representing Pakistan in the tournament, are drinking water from the public taps on the roads.

They have failed to make any impact in the tournament so far as they conceded three consecutive losses in the three games they have played.

The Men in Green lost the opening game of the tournament against the arch-rivals, India by 4-0. In the second contest, they faced Australia where they were defeated by 2-1. Whereas, the hosts, Netherlands won their game against Pakistan by 4-0.

Pakistan will face Argentina on June 28th and Belgium 29th

This is just sad. They are a international team! Feel for them.

Pakistan has gone the WI route in hockey.

Lost 2-3 to Aus, we seem to be blocked against them annoying to say the least.
