The build-up to the first Test of the summer started with a handful of former cricketers, Mitchell Johnson more strongly than others, questioning the place of David Warner in the side, not to forget his quest for a farewell at the SCG. The aftermath of which got a bit ugly with everyone having their say, some more pertinent than others. It's a narrative and a debate that will regardless carry on for at least the next few weeks.

And it ended with Usman Khawaja raising some very important questions about our society in general. The aftermath of which was also rather ugly with everyone having their say, some more pertinent than others. It's a narrative and a debate that should carry on, and not just for the next few weeks. Thanks to Khawaja it will.

In the midst of it all, Australia and Pakistan trained and prepped for the first of three Tests at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne batted for long hours as they do. Nathan Lyon re-joined his Test teammates after having parted ways halfway through the Ashes series a few months ago. All while Pat Cummins and the rest of his World Cup and World Test Championship heroes returned home and somehow found the energy and verve to kickstart their next campaign.

Pakistan, meanwhile, went through their routines having arrived in Australia on the back of significant turmoil behind the scenes following their disappointing World Cup campaign. New captain, new director, new coach, new selectors, former tainted captains returning to the fold for 24 hours before being gotten rid of again, and an overall sense of diving into the unknown, under the leadership of Shan Masood. All that chaos around Pakistani cricket, what some who hail from there will say is nothing more than run-of-the-mill, has largely been overshadowed, if not pushed to the backburner, ever since Johnson wrote his now well-publicised comment piece. And if anything, even that feeds into the rather evident sense of apathy towards the upcoming Test summer. Mainly in terms of the supposed quality, or lack thereof, of the two visiting teams.

Not much is expected of the West Indies when they return for their second Test tour in two summers come January. It's unfortunately a sentiment that also seems to accompany this new-look Pakistani outfit, even if they have talked up a new approach to the way they play Test cricket, led by Masood. And even if they have a number of players who are here without the baggage of having been beaten soundly by a very similar-looking Australian team four years ago. The fact that no Pakistani team has won a Test on Australian soil since 1995 doesn't help either.

Worst bowling unit we have ever fielded in Australia

A couple of 150s or a daddy 200 on cards

If Shaheen can bowl at 135-140kph. He will find success. That is the speed spot you want to be at least at in pitch. I believe Khurram and Jamal should be able to bowl that fast.

Length will be key as well of course.

The only positive thing for Pakistan is that we are expecting them to be awful.

Pakistan fans know how the team plays when there are zero expectations. Lets see. I would be glad if we take the test to 5th day.

Horrendous bowling unit (on paper ofcourse). No frontline spinner?

Batting is very dodgy as well. I would have gone with Saim instead of Imam. Need to make bold moves to win in Australia. When will we learn to be brave??

Not sure what the selectors do. Do they even have discussions i.e. if X, Y, Z player gets injured, do we have a back up player ready? Its as if they felt Abrar would be fit and available for all 3 games and they didn't have to worry about picking a replacement player.

Is that the Playing 11?
No Hassan Ali (not that he is anything special But still), No Spinner (it is Perth but still ), No Rizwan and No Mohd Wasim. David Warner will get the best farewell ever.

Absolutely zero chance of that bowling line up picking up 20 wickets.

Some of the Aussie batters are going feast big time

I would be very surprised if they were able to dismiss Australia in one innings. Most likely they will take 10-12 wickets, but that seems too far-fetched.

My wildest dream is that we draw one test this series. As for this test, Let's get 4 good days boys. Warner/Khawaja record partnership loading.

I've mentioned this before, but it doesn't matter what squad or XI they picked for this series. I won't blame Masood or the team management too much because it will be carnage.

The only hope is some magic from Shaheen and Babar where they carry everyone on their shoulders.

Injuries to Naseem Shah, Ehsanullah have hurt us. Australia and South Africa are the places where you need fast bowling allrounders.

Only hope is to put on a massive total and force Australia to keep a high scoring rate and make mistakes because Australia will almost certainly go for the win.

All the best for the Pakistan team and these players. They are in a really tough test tour, first due to multiple injuries and also because Pakistan hardly plays any test cricket, Pakistan is a t20 cricket nation

I hope people stop criticising these players, many seem to not realise how tough this 3-test match series is.

Aussies will put BazBall to shame when Head and Marsh walk in on Day 2 with Australia 350/4...

Pakistan should included Sameen Gul and Arshad Iqbal. Both are tall and are quicker than Hamza,Ashraf and Shazam.I am not say they would bowled Australia out twice. If PCB is trying new bowlers then why not these two?

Win and loss can happen. Just give a give a good fight. Playing well may result in even a win.

Oh match is starting at 7:50 IST .i thought it going to be 5AM start

What has Shan Masood done to deserve captaincy? Rizwan is a fighter and he should have been in the playing XI.

Bowling is paper thin, but Pakistan should go all out in the first session of their bowling and reduce Australia to 75/4 or something like that. Then if their tail wags, they cannot get more than 300.

When Pakistan bats, they should look to bat more than 90 overs. Australia are an aged team. They cannot be out in the field for longer hours. Patience is the key.

He has done quite well in county cricket in recent past also he is very confident individual and has leadership skills.

While Rizwan is also good but i think he is more suited for white ball cricket.

In my 25 years of watching Pak cricket this might be the weakest test bowling attack I have ever seen.

Get ready to see Australia set some batting records.

This. Really stupid of pak to drop rizwan and not picking a spinner. Even aus never goes without a spinner at Perth. That should tell you something. And sarfraraz is way past his best. Rizwan will be a better option. People focusing a lot on warner but travis head can hammer pak here of it's a tired bowling attack.

The selection in Australia as always, remains horrific. 3 specialist bowlers are being selected when this team struggles to even get 10 wickets in these conditions? Ridiculous stuff.

If you are going with 7 batsmen, I have no idea why in the world you would select Faheem over a specialist bowler. Two rookie bowlers too and you can't help but think Pakistan bowlers are going to get absolutely annihilated here.

Days like these are when Pakistani's realize the gulf between them and India.

It's not a random comparison because India is clearly our rival, and seeing what they did 2 years ago in Australia, deep down all Pakistani cricket fans including me are dying to say we wish Pakistan one day could do the same against Australia in Australia.

Actually forget in Australia, even on home soil Australia dominated Pak.

Shaheen Afridi will not last the whole series. High chance of him getting injured.

Shan must have a plan. Hopefully he can get the bowlers to execute. This side is packed with youngsters so I'm hopeful of a good fielding performance to back up disciplined bowling

i am mentally ready for 450 /0 at end of the day , but the die hard Pakistani fan heart in me wishing for miracle 250 all out and Pak 40/0 at the end of day. Meri sadgi dekh me kya chahata hun. Anyone else feeling same?

Still remember in one of the Tests last time, Shaheen got Burns early on at 8/1 and gave us all hope, before the next wicket came at 369/2...

Everything revolves around Shaheen here.

He has to be at the top of his game or this will be a massacre.

The team selection itself shows there is no plan other than lengthen the batting and being defensive in the hopes of getting a draw.

Sarfraz playing over Rizwan is beyond stupid too. Sarfraz is awful in SENA conditions and can't handle pace whereas Rizwan played well last time Pakistan toured in the Test series.

And already a miss-field 🙈

7 runs off the first 4 balls already. Misfield by the captain too.

Typical Pakistani start in Australia.

So unlucky for Shaheen. Scoreboard does not reflect the quality of bowling

14 runs off the first over already. What a pathetic bunch of losers these guys are.

Woke up at 5AM to see Aus hit 14 from the first over uff

Nothing makes me more happy than watching overrated SSA getting hammered…

Aus already off to a flier. 14 runs off Shaheen 1st over. Shaheen will go from a strike bowler to a work horse by the end of this test..

Since when did teams started playing t20 with red ball and white kit? Am I missing something

Decent over from Khurram but once that ball stops moving, he might get hit all over the place. Not enough pace.

Terrible luck for Afridi.

He's produced three nicks now all going to the boundary.

I like the legslip fielder to Khawaja, good to see some out of the box thinking

It is very rare Australia rolls out a grassy pitch to opposition. Even they are technically weak

Warner humming along to a 142+ batting average vs Pakistan in Australia. It's truly sad when one player can thoroughly dominate you like this.

Refreshing to see the keeper not pressure the captain into a review!
