They substitute meat with butter, oil and sugar. I have eaten Gulab Jamun, Mysore Pak, Laddu in TN. I have also eaten them here in Canada, which has more North Indian influence. The amount of oil, butter, sugar and Ghee are unbelievable here. Maybe that is what helped those bowlers bowl fast ? Im sure kapil dev was a meatatarian. There is no way a vegetarian could be an allrounder like that.

Not everyone is 5 feet, are they. They have flexible bodies, which people from other regions lack. They can be electric in the field and also have a natural bowling action, if they're trained well. Then again, pace without control is useless.
