Australia reach Stumps on Day 1 of the 2nd Test against Pakistan in Karachi on a commanding 251/3

This is rinse and repeat of 1st day of 1st test.

Pakistan are playing poor cricket.

Aussies also are content with current run rate and blocking.

SA test series was better than this borefest.

Dont understand this logic of Pakistan think tank selecting half fit bowlers for test matches on the back of past performances or like Naseem shah being so young to debut 5 day cricket as he did in Aus and couldnt last 5 days...

There is no logic, there never war.

PCB is a pathetic cricket board with no vision and its sole purpose is to harm Pak cricket as much as they can. That's what their actions scream.

BCCI, despite their predatory/mafia style, at least produce good cricket!

aus will whitewash us in the odi or throw the final game away just to keep pak happy

For a long time , nearly 3 years now, ever since Amir and Wahab retired Pakistan are still finding a new ball bowler to pair with shaheen.. They have selected Abbas, Naseem, Hasan, Tabish Khan but havent tried Sameen Gul yet which is baffling..

Actually 3 years ago when Amir and Wahab retired , they forgot Rahat ali was a new ball bowler but Misbah recalled his buddies Sohail and Imran jnr..

Pakistan should have made a spinning mine field like what we did in 2016 against Aussies.

Head is an interesting batsman he will score quickly the longer he bats the more the run rate will increase.

Pakistan scored 245-1 on first day of first test.
The amount of criticism here was unbelievable.

Australia has scored around 250 odd for 3 on day 1.

But no criticism at all.

Interesting.

Like it or not Hassan Ali is a proper Test match bowler needs to be pumped up

Sorry I didn’t follow the match today, how’s our fielding? Any catch drops?

Few misfields , 2 dropped catches. Spinners were atrocious bowling 1 boundary ball an over.

Interesting.

Australia didnt bowl negative leg side lines on day 1 in order to slow the scoring down..They bowled normally and our batsmen were negative.

Australia would be 350 at home but in away conditions it’s a different thing especially with negative lines being bowled.

Those were tactical lines not negative lines.

Australia can be all out 340-350 tomorrow.

I have always noticed our players get unnecessary criticism just for the sake of it.

Mere jawaano have some patience this is just day 1
There is nothing on the pitch on day 1 but with time it will deteriote. Babar's strategy is to down runrate because if new ball worked or if the day 2 pitch deteriote than there should be less runs on the board for Australia.
This is simple thinking, people complain for everything
Pakistan prepared flat road people trolled them
India prepared pitch which deteriotes after 6th over people troll them.
Its just we are used to t20 nothing else.
Have some mercy.

Atleast someone understands Test Cricket.

That is not how cricket is played and not the right mindset.. Getting into the shell right from day 1, shouldnt be the way to go..

If they Aus is batting better then accept the bowlers are mediocre and look for better bowlers , not ask them to bowl negative leg side lines..

Tactical batting in the first test meant a draw was the only result possible hopefully tactical bowling can get a win here let’s see I am not hopeful but let’s see.

What a negative cricket by Australia..on Flat wicket there is no intent shown by Mighty Australian batting line-up... credit to Pakistani bowlers for bowling their heart out after loosing the toss...

Tactical? :)) it was negative, even the umpires had a word to babar about it.

Australia are ahead after day 1.

A few quick wickets tomorrow can bring Pakistan back to game.

Text book Test cricket by both teams surely making Hanif Bradman Benaud Qadir proud in heavens
Day 1 ends and game in balance Pakistan need to make use of early morning tomorrow Aus will look to build on all set for exciting 4 more days sadly these keyboard fans don't understand
How may of them have watched Test cricket since mid 90s :billyd

Mohammad Rizwan speaking to the press:

"We all know that Usman Khawaja, David Warner and Steve Smith are good Test batters, they know the conditions and know very well how and when to attack our bowling; But this is the beauty of cricket that we saw their intent and tried to dry the runs and this is why we went for a legside attack; This is Test cricket and everything like this is possible; We wanted to dry the runs and this was the only tactic for available to us."

"We wanted to dry the runs after Australia made good use of the advantage they gained by winning the toss; Look such tactics cannot be considered as negative as other big teams also do these things, and thankfully our bowlers did make a comeback; We should play in the way its demanded by the nature of the pitch, their run-rate was very high so in order to dry that, we bowled in that way"

"Just because we lost the toss doesn't mean we should lay down arms; It will be challenging for us but in the way we have comeback into the game after the wicket of Steve Smith, and if we can get them all out quickly and put in a good performance as a batting unit in the first innings then we can create problems for them also"

"The pain I have in my fingers is not something that can be cured by resting - you can ask any fielder or keeper and he will say that; I just have to bear it"

Pakistan need to get khawaja early and also head when he comes in as he will look to score quickly.

There's a slim chance of a collapse happening tomorrow. Lyon won't survive too long so if Pakistan can somehow get Khawaja they will have a real shot at dismissing Australia well below 400.

Usman Khawaja speaking to the press:

"Look its really nice - in 'Pindi they chanted Khawaja - here too they said the same; They (crowd) have been great and so supportive and I couldn't have asked for more; I love it because you can tell that they want Pakistan to win and will cheer if I got out but you can see that they are also very supportive of me; I did have relatives in the crowd today as my Mum's family is from Karachi"

Usman Khawaja's unbeaten century and Steve Smith's fifty put Australia in a strong position on the opening day of the second Test in Karachi.

Australia won the toss in Karachi and opted to bat first. David Warner and Usman Khawaja, after surviving the tough opening spell from Pakistan pacers, dominated with the bat, as they made full use of the fresh pitch in the first half of the opening session.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan's standout bowler from the Rawalpindi Test, started brilliantly against the two left-handers, occasionally asking them questions with his swinging full-length deliveries. Alongside Shaheen in the opening spell, Hasan Ali, who made his comeback into the Pakistan XI, was very accurate and troubled the batters with his tight outside off-stump line. Warner, who got off to a shaky start, survived two close leg-before-wicket calls off Hasan but looked in sublime form after that.

With two left-handers at the crease, spin was deployed early by Pakistan. However, Warner and Khawaja's aggressive response to Sajid Khan's bowling highlighted the openers' approach. In Sajid’s very first over, Warner danced down the track and smashed him for a six over long-off, bringing up the half-century opening partnership. The openers continued to stay firm in the middle, as Khawaja also danced down the track to hit a six off Sajid in 17th over, followed by another six from Warner in the same over.

It looked like Khawaja and Warner would race to a century opening stand before Faheem Ashraf broke through to end the stand on 82. Operating around the wicket, Ashraf managed to get a nick off Warner's bat straight into the hands of wicketkeeper Rizwan, dismissing him on 36.

Shortly after losing his opening partner Khawaja completed his second consecutive half-century of the series with a boundary down to the third man. Labuschagne, though, was unlucky to return to the pavilion for a duck. Trying to get off the mark, Labuschagne attempted a risky single but a direct hit from Sajid found him short at the non-striker's end.

Khawaja and Steve Smith ensured Australia don't lose any more wickets as Australia went to lunch at 100/2.

Khawaja and Smith continued their strong batting show after the break as the hosts failed to take any wickets in the second session of the day. The southpaw played some exquisite drives as he closed in on his century while Smith batted patiently throughout the second session.

Bowling tight lines and lengths, Shaheen and Ashraf didn't allow the batters to score freely, keeping the run rate under control throughout the session. Nauman Ali extracted some spin and bounce off the surface but both the Aussies batted sensibly and went to tea at 172/2.

The batters brought up their century partnership in the final session of the day. Meanwhile, Smith's return to form saw him score his 35th Test fifty. His innings allowed Khawaja to take his time during the nervous nineties.

Having missed out on a ton in Rawalpindi, Khawaja approached his century carefully and soon brought up his 11th Test century with a single towards square leg.

The new ball didn't really make much difference as Smith and Khawaja continued to keep the scoreboard ticking. However, the introduction of Hasan got Pakistan the breakthrough they needed, with Ashraf at slips taking a brilliant one-handed catch to send Smith packing for 72.

Pakistan could have the wicket of Khawaja off the last ball of the day had Imam-ul-Haq not dropped the catch at forward short leg. Australia went to stumps on 251/3.

Usman Khawaja says his Test ton in front of some of his Karachi family is something special.

The Australian opener's unbeaten 127 underpinned Australia's 3-251 on day one in the second Test in Karachi, a bustling Pakistan city he knows well.

"My family is actually from Karachi, this is where the Khawajas are from," he said.

"Everyone in my family is born in Karachi except me so this is my home, I have been here a lot.

"Every Test hundred is pretty special - the Sydney ones are probably up there as my favourites.

"This one, after last week getting 97, it has got to be up there ... I was born in Islamabad but my family is all from Karachi so this one meant a lot."

Only four members of his clan were in the National Stadium on Saturday but they joined the rest of the crowd in wildly cheering Khawaja's latest feat.

"They have been so supportive, I couldn't have asked for any more," he said.

"I love it because they want Pakistan to win, you can tell they're diehard Pakistani supporters, but they're very supportive of me."

Khawaja now has three tons in four Tests, and averages 119.75, since his recall in January after a 29-month absence.

And the 35-year-old is relishing a ride he never thought would come again.

"I wanted to play for Australia again but it wasn't something that was on my radar," Khawaja said.

"I know the game can change very quickly so I am just enjoying it - a lot of people say that but I am at a point in my life and my career where it's more about enjoyment than anything else.

"Nothing lasts forever, I understand that."

Khawaja combined with Steve Smith (72) in a 159-run partnership which defied some defensive bowling tactics from their hosts.

Spinners Sajid Khan and Nuaman Ali spent an hour of the final session pitching wide of leg stump in a ploy described in commentary by Pakistani great Waqar Younis as "ridiculous".

Khawaja and Smith just kept padding the ball away.

"Just give 'em nothing was our plan," Khawaja said.

The Australians have now set their sights on a massive first innings score. Just how big?

"850," Khawaja said, laughing.

"If we bat well enough tomorrow morning we will have an opportunity to drive the game.

"I felt like Pakistan were in the same position last game but they just didn't do it, they didn't really take any opportunity to increase their run rate."

Khawaja ton sets the tone for Australia on opening day

PAK v AUS, 2nd test, day one, report</b>

Want to be put-off Test cricket? Then watch the 6 days of action in this series so far.

Yes I no that but I think he's not playing the current test series becouse he is lacking test match fitness we're you have to bowl long spells.

Yasir's domestic form has rarely ever been an indicator of his test performance. On these pitches, not playing him is a big blunder.

Spot On. If we keep seeing Pakistan test matches like this, Test cricket will rapidly, immediately die in Pakistan

Pakistan only won 2 test matches at home in entire decade of 1960’s. Yet Test cricket did not die. Even with potent bowling attacks there have been significant draws back in 1970’s, 80’s 90’s ( in Pakistan) yet our Test cricket did not die.
It died when Ramiz Raja became captain and we lost 1st home test series in 15 years ( 1995) and from then till 2007, i think we lost 6-7 home test series in comparison to only 4 home series loses in initial 43 years (59,61,69,80).

If he's not test match fit to bowl 20 overs should not play even if its yasir in his prime.

He can still bowl 20+ overs per innings in tests. It is the cold shoulder from the selectors that has been holding him down. Everyone knows Yasir is a game turner in Asia. He has never been good in NZ, Aus or SA and never will be. But on these pitches, he's comfortably the best spinner in Pak.
