Stumps 5-273. Honorees shared IMO though the OZ will feel they could have done better. 5 wickets in the sheds after day 1 Poms will be satisfied. Clarke still there with Haddo, MJ still there to cowlash a few. 350 should be a realistic goal if Clarke and Haddin can stick around tomorrow morning. But they would have been looking at 400 minimum at the start of play I think. Three batsmen got starts and didn't go on to make a big score.

Aus look set for 400 here . Real poor catching by Eng ,it could have been 270/7 at close .

We got lucky today, so many soft shots but bad fielding bailed us out a bit.

Thought broad and monty were really good today, nice spell from anderson before the new ball as well.

Soft dismissals of watson, Warner and Bailey may have levelled the day

Aussies were well on course to score 500+

^A nice chap from Christchurch.

Jokes aside, it's too early to say much.

I can clearly say that Bangladesh currently are a better fielding side than England(our bowling is woeful though). Saw the highlights, England could have gotten Aus allout for a below-par score.

And the worst part is, Australia's "Best" batsman are yet to come :D -Johno, Siddle...Dont know about Harris and Lyon

Or maybe England boys are dropping on purpose :D... times are hard you know

A Kiwi bitsa player. And this actually isn't intended as a dig at his Antipodean roots

Might have been better to send Prior in at #6 and pick Bres or Finn then. At least we know they can do one job well.

Finn is a must for Perth at least. England's batting is a bigger concern. Need 6 proper batsman and Prior

Actually I don't know much about Stokes, haven't followed the county scene much here in Boston. What would have caused Flower to pick him ahead of Bresnan who I think is a good enough bowler to hold his place in the side purely on that basis?

Probably Prior's shocking run of form. If I were England I'd be very uncomfortable playing him at 6.

Don't actually think Finn will do so well having seem him in the tour matches. Even at Alice he was bowling the ball very short as if he expected to magically get wickets by doing so.

Got the feeling that he might get carried away with the WACA's bounce and not realise he has to bowl smartly and put in the hard yards as well.

Pretty good day for england id say, this wicket looks pretty placid and docile and if they had managed to hold there catches things would have been even better.

Looks like 400 is around about par on this surface batting 1st so Aussies still have a lot of work to do here, england need to come at aussies hard and with all guns blazing in the morning.

Still think he's a better option than Tremlett, Stokes or Bresnan but yeah he has to bowl consistently fuller with the odd short ball.

i wouldn't call it flat. Siddle, Harris and Johnson are quicker and hit the deck harder than any of the English bowlers. Not to mention Monty was getting some turn already so Lyon may also be a factor.

I think that Flower thinks that picking Bres at #7 is too much of a gamble with Prior out of form and the top order looking wobbly.

If Stokes gets a century tomorrow then Flower will be vindicated, but only if ENG win.

Reminded me of the games against SA last year. England dropped a shed load of catches and were made to pay heavily. There can not be any excuses from the players who dropped few today.

Root's chance was a tough one though. But Carbs was an absolute sitter. Blind Freddy could've caught that one.

Good overall day for Test cricket, Australia still have the capacity to end up scoring health at this stage but England slightly ahead after day 1.

Carbs can kiss his intl career good bye if he does not get any runs here. There is no point playing 30+ year old who does not score runs and drops catches.

So i assume stokes will bat at 6, don't know much about but he doesn't have a great first class batting record.

Is he a legit top 6 bat or have they gambled a bit because he gives them the 5th bowling option?
