The tail has been a big difference between both the teams, England haven't managed to wag at all

Johnson has 14 wickets at an average of 4 against the tail this series.

That's the thing about watching two teams with ordinary batting lineups but good bowlers, you see a lot of collapses on both sides and keeps the game tight.

England has managed to incite very few big collapses though.

Especially thanks to Haddin and the tail

Lyon is the second highest wicket taker for australia in this series after johnson.
Lyon has 16,harris 14 and siddle 13.

Lyon has lived up to his family name this match.

When I first heard his name I thought it was pronounced Lyon the French way (Leeyon)

Lyon isn't a great bowler but he is test standard. Also got a lot of ticker and will fight to the end.

People forget that he made his test debut with months of his first class debut and that the last time England toured he was mowing grass on the Adelaide Oval.

He's had his faults with the ball but much of that has been inexperience.

well said.

Lyon deserves credit.

Ram: "England last 5 for 6 and middle 3 for 1. Two collapses Total 8 for 7!!!" Indeed, damning numbers

I've felt all series that Harris has deserved more wickets than he has actually taken.

40/0 will be better by the end of day and 130/2 by tomorrow lunch.
Don't want to be in a situation like 120/5 by tomorrow lunch, that could be in England's favor with the final day's dry pitch under sunlight with spinners on.

Wow that looks so horrible especially when they have the lead, England as a team are in a shell

Yeah he was the one who applied constant pressure and johno reaped the rewards, not that johnson wasn't good on his own,but become doubly effective due to the pressure created by harris.

around 6 more overs to be bowled today . England need a wicket or 2 .

Carberry inning actually put more pressure on Cook. Cook normally doesn't bat fast but when other guy is batting at 6 runs in 70 balls then you got to move the score card.

Carberry helped set a negative mindset. Had he scored at a normal rate, England would have been 100-1 rather then 65-1.

Oldlegspinner: "In the inevitable criticism of the English batting, let's not forget they gave away 40 runs for the last wicket this morning. They may prove crucial."

good point

England batting is weak, Trott was the glue, carberry Root r nit good enough, stokes aint a number 6

Barring another epic collapse we should be able to chase this down I reckon. If they can't they really need to take a good hard look at themselves. Awesome bowling effort

Yep Australia bowled well, but I reckon this could b hugh crisis for england
As they could b Completel shot after this game, if Bell seriously is a quality bat Why is he
Hiding from 3 spot

So Australia finish the day with 201 to win in six possible sessions left. It was important for England to pick wickets in those 15 odd overs today, but they could not.

Trouble ahead for England.

We need to see off the first hour tomorrow.. What a great performance by Lyon today..

Even we don't collapse like that anymore.

Poor stuff from KP, Cook throughout the series. One would imagine that these guys are future greats but their meek surrender in a crucial series is absolutely unacceptable

He said he was willing to bat there, but they won't put him there.

A day ago I thought ENG could come back finish the series 3-2, but now 5-0 looks inevitable. The batting was really tame today.

Uncharacteristic second innings from England. Was like a Pak second innings

They have completely lost the plot

Well, I see that nobody has chased more than 190 to win at the MCG since the 1930s.

If ENG bowl tight then AUS could self-destruct, but I doubt it.

England like ian botham have said have just not been good enough. And it's been all because of their defensive and passive approach throughout this whole series

Perfect set up for this match, either team could win it. I don't think either team is favourite and there will probably be a few twists and turns throughout the day, so strap yourself in for what could be a very exciting finish to this match.

The reason is cause australias plans to each player have been excellent, they,ve worked out the eng batsman, last series they were bowling short of a length to alot of these players this time
Its bin clear plans and Theyve prøven england r not up to it

Four test matches are more than sufficient time to take stock and react to what the opposition have been doing to you. I was watching carbury batting and the bowling to him was not extraordinary, he just had the mindset to defend, block, leave, duck but was in no mood to play shots.

If anything, this has shown up the England support staff. Some serious question marks need to be answered from the likes of Andy flower and Graham Gooch in particular.

***? One of the worst days ever. Pathetic non-performance.

What the fish! Am i high right now surely i read the scorecard incorectly, i was hoping aus would need 350 odd to win after englands start....pathetic.

Missed the final collapse by England but can't say I'm surprised by it. This English team have taken a physical and psychological battering in a long tour and simply don't have the stomach to win. Nothing else can explain them throwing away the advantage today.

I only watched it till England were 55-0 and went to bed but looking at scorecard what on earth happened. Can't wait for highlights in the mean time I can watch some of the Saffas bat instead.

Two of the weakest batting displays you will see, usually i would back the batting team to chase down the 230 but if the trend from this game continues expect us to throw away 5 or 6 and lose by 40.

Cook actually batted better than KP I thought but Carberry in the other end was in a rut that negated his good start

That was some epic tuk tuk from Carberry eh

That said we will probably see some tuk tuk from the OZ tomorrow lol. This wicket is very deceiving I think. Very two paced.

Broad might be quite difficult to negotiate but I don't think Australian batsman have much to worry about. Or do you reckon Monty would do a Lyon and rip through your batting lineup?

Australia ahead at the end of Day 3.

They need to get 201 more runs to win with 10 wickets and 2 days still remaining!

I went to bed when Cook was batting like a dream. lol

I worry about 3 things:

1. it's a two paced wicket that both teams have struggled to bat on
2. our batting lineup is very fragile. It's deceiving because there have been 7 centuries but really Clarke is the only world class batsman
3. 180 is the highest score that has been chased at the MCG. These chases are always tricky

EDIT: My mistake, the highest run chase at the MCG is 300-odd but the average run chase is 180.

Our batting is pretty poor.

Watson isn't a test number 3 and Bailey isn't a test batsman.

And conditions tomorrow should suit Anderson.

Yeah in these conditions i don't feel great about our chances, warner will go for it and who knows if he gets lucky and makes runs vs the new ball we will have a decent shot at getting the target.

Still we would have killed for this scenario 24 hours ago, england with even a bit of sensible batting would have and should have shut us out of this test.

If Eng doesn't get Warner before the lunch time then game will be over for Eng. Eng should take heart from previous chases here and bowl well rather than simply show up and allow Aus to win. Collapse was pathetic from Eng. They simply needed to bat for another 25 overs or so to put Aus under lot of pressure. Carberry derailed the whole thing by trying to survive for 70 balls and scored 6 runs. I don't remember when was the last time some one played like that when they were not trying to save the game.
