You're kidding right? NZ is a country that punches above their weight in sport whether it be at the olympics, rugby league (world champs), union (world champs), cricket (semi finalists in most wcs), soccer, golf (lydia ko).

'Punching above its weight' is to my mind a nonsense term.

Depends on what you want to compare it to.

You want to talk about sports like Golf. Sports which require pretty decent facilities. Specialist coaching. Expensive equipment. Then don't compare NZ to a third world country that simply can't afford to have any of these things.

When it comes to cricket....you guys have about 4 players who are international class. You only have to pick 7 other guys who can hold a bat/bowl a ball to have a settled line up. And truth be told....it really wouldn't make much difference which 7 you picked.
