Australia, having lost their first World Cup game while chasing since 1999, will aim to bounce back as they take on a determined Pakistan in their fourth match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 in Taunton on Wednesday, 12 June.

Overview

Australia v Pakistan
County Ground Taunton, Taunton
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 17
Wednesday, 12 June; 10.30am local, 09.30 GMT

With all its might, Australia's bowling attack, for once, seemed clueless against India, who batted them out of the game in the first half at The Oval on Sunday, 9 June. The batsmen tried their best to keep the defending champions in the hunt for most part of the chase, but Australia never looked like they had the game under control, losing wickets at crucial junctures. However, they can take heart from the performances of Alex Carey, who has taken his batting credentials up a notch.

Standing opposite them are Pakistan, the team whom Australia swept 5-0 two months ago in the United Arab Emirates, and Aaron Finch's men will be keen to get back to winning ways.

Pakistan have lived up to their 'unpredictable' tag and have seen contrasting results in the tournament so far. They bounced back with a clinical 14-run win against the hosts, England, after a seven-wicket loss to West Indies in their tournament opener. They missed out on an opportunity to build on that against Sri Lanka, as their clash resulted in a complete washout. They will need to show similar intensity, and execution, as they did against England, to beat a tough opposition in Australia.

Key Players

Glenn Maxwell (Australia): With his immense skills, and clean ball-striking abilities, Maxwell is capable of changing the flow of any cricket match. The right-hander averages 55 against Pakistan, and with scores of 71, 98 and 70 in his previous three outings against them, he will once again aim for a match-winning contribution on Wednesday.

Babar Azam (Pakistan): Babar Azam has put up consistent performances at No.3 ever since he's arrived in England. The right-hander, with his solid technique and fluent stroke-play, will look to hold the Pakistan innings together against the quality of Australia's pace attack.

Conditions:

A dry and cloudy start to the day is expected, but chances of rain thereafter might result in a shortened game. With the pitch expected to offer some assistance for fast bowlers early in the day, captains would be tempted to field first.

Squads

Australia: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Shaun Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c, wk), Asif Ali, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan, Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz, Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim, Fakhar Zaman

Australia v Pakistan

• Australia have won 14 of their last 15 ODI clashes with Pakistan, including their last eight in a
row and most recently a 5-0 series whitewash in the UAE in March earlier this year.
• This will be the 10th ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup clash between Australia and Pakistan,
Australia have won five of their previous nine clashes (L4), including their most recent such
meeting in Adelaide in 2015.
• Australia and Pakistan have met eight times before in ODIs in England and Wales, Australia
have won five of those matches (L3) including each of the last two, the most recent of which
was in 2004.
• Pakistan and Australia have met four times before in World Cup matches in England (2 wins
each), the most recent of which was the 1999 World Cup Final which Australia won by 8
wickets with 179 balls remaining.
• This will be just the fifth ODI to take place in Taunton and it will be the first time either Pakistan
or Australia have played a match at this ground.
• Pakistan beat England in their most recent completed ODI, ending a run of 11 straight losses
in this format.
• Australia’s Steven Smith has reached 50 in seven of his last eight ICC Cricket World Cup
matches, including a knock of 65 against Pakistan in 2015.
• Shadab Khan’s (Pakistan) next ODI wicket will be his 50th, this will be his first ODI against
Australia if he plays in the match.
• Australia’s Nathan Coulter-Nile needs one more scalp to reach 50 ODI wickets, he has taken
seven wickets in three previous ODIs against Pakistan at an average of 23.7 and strike-rate of
23.1.
• Australia’s Pat Cummins has bowled more dot balls (112) than any other player at ICC
Cricket World Cup 2019 so far.

Excited to see how Imam handled Cummins and Starc.

I think whoever won the toss chose to Feild first due to moisture & overcast condition.

Why isn't it raining?!!
I wanted the point from a rain off!
Looks like a full game will take place.
I don't see us winning this one.
Typical, the SL game gets washed out and we lose a pount(no offense SL fans) and this game is fine to go ahead in taunton, whilst its raining everywhere else in the country!
Typical!
I'm doing my rain dance!

Considering weather conditions and a green pitch, I would play following team in the same batting order.

01 - Imam Ul Haq
02 - Fakhar Zaman
03 - Babar Azam
04 - Haris Sohail
05 - Sarfraz Ahmed
06 - M Hafeez
07 - Shoaib Malik
08 - Shadab Khan
09 - Hasan Ali
10 - M Amir
11 - Shaheen Shah Afridi

We definitely need batting depth on this pitch and bowlers who can swing in first 25 overs. Let's hope we can play positively and win to tie the world cup head to head matches against Australia.

You say we need batting depth and then include malik in the team?
Malik is only decent against spin!
Aussies will be cming with pacers!

I think if this game goes ahead, which it looks like , it will severely hamper our progress to the semis.
Dont get fooled by india's win over aussies, that was a case of batting first on a relatively clear day.
This match will have cloud cover and hence the ball will likely swing.
I see a repeat of the thrashing of the 1999 wc final!

Hope we win this against Australia.

Why we always struggle agaisnt Australia? They are not better than England but they will demolish us badly.
My only hope for today match is Imam and Amir.

Fakhar will be caught in slip of Cummins.

Sarfaraz, Malik, Asif are not enough against decent fast bowling and a failure is waiting for Hafeez as well because he already score in one match.

Hasan purple patch is over 1 year ago.

Babar is runs machine but he is too soft for these type of important matches ( hope he perform).

Wahab is playing with his heart but he also need to bowl some tight overs because he always gift a ball or two every over

Going by the comments here and in the other thread I think this will be the day when Imam will be crucified by the fans if he doesn't click 😀

Bowl first, get them for 180 and chase it with ease. I hope it is 2011 again.

Hope somebody has told Sarfaraz there is a heads side on the toss coin too.

Aus will bat first and will be restricted to about either side of 200. Pak will start well and then create harakiri only to be saved by calm Sarfaraz. Pak to win by 4 wickets.

Not getting the best of luck with the weather. This is the game which should have been rained off rather than SL, almost certain this will be a defeat.

Haris Sohail is our best batsman on swinging wickets, I hope he plays.

Shaheen Afridi is a must on this type of wicket, adding to the fact that Australia have never faced him before in an ODI match makes him even more dangerous.

Shadab Khan is our only proper spinner, he should play no doubt.

Difficult to drop Wahab Riaz after his bowling last match, but excluding Hasan Ali would mean an all left arm attack. Tough decisions will have to be made.

My Playing XI would be:

1) Fakhar Zaman
2) Imam Ul Haq
3) Babar Azam
4) Haris Sohail
5) Sarfraz Ahmed(C)(Wk)
6) Mohammad Hafeez
7) Asif Ali
8) Shadab Khan
9) Wahab Riaz
10) Mohammad Amir
11) Shaheen Afridi

Pitch is a green top, overcast conditions. Would be a total disaster to play Wahab here, but they're going to play him anyway because "seniority" and his mighty figures of 3/82 in the last game, after bowling 1 good over upfront, getting smashed, then getting a couple of cheap wickets after Buttler got out.

Ideally, they should play this lineup:

Imam ul Haq
Fakhar Zaman
Babar Azam
Mohammad Hafeez
Haris Sohail
Shoaib Malik
Sarfaraz Ahmed+*
Shadab Khan
Mohammad Amir
Hasan Ali (or Hasnain, but maybe he's too inexperienced)
Shaheen Shah Afridi

2 points against SL and 1 point in this game as a reult of a rain off, would of seen us with 5 points with 5 games to play, 3 of which would be against SA, bengla and afghans, which we should win and qualification into the semis!
This game may severely hamper our chances of qualification into the semis!

Tumhare munh mein ghee shakkar:)

Cloudy conditions but it doesn't seem like it will rain for a few hours, we'll get an on time start but major chances of light showers in between.

Yes, it looks like rain won't reduce the number of overs even if it happens, because it will be very light and for short spans.

Seriously, what is malik going to do in these conditions and against this pace bowling attack. I be surprised if he gets into double figures!

Shaheen should play. He swings the ball which wahab is unable to do (barring reverse swing)

Australia should play behendroff n Richardson instead of stoinis n zampa. All out pace attack with variety.

Anyway they have depth in batting should be good.

Why do you want to see a collapse in our batting lineup? I hope we win it smoothly, so our NRR can also improve.

Bro, as long as we win I don’t mind any collapse, the important thing is 2 points.

Thing is like the England match we are way overdue a win vs Australia. We have been poor in ODIS but also not had any luck. Against England we got some and if we get some today we have a chance. If we are in the game after 10 overs of batting we have a good chance.

It will depend on our fielding. If we can stop boundaries down third man, if keeper can be a more active, and if we hold all of our cathes, then we have a chance

I agree Wahab shouldnt play on a green top but he certainly bowled quite well in last match. I wouldnt say he got smashed at all in last match

If we bowl first we could win, otherwise if we bat first I think we'll only manage 100-199 runs.

This is wrong we have met 6 times and score is 3-3. we met and lost 87 semifinal. we won 92 group game. then won group game 99 lost final 99, won in 2011, lost 2015 quarter final
3-3

It is referring to meeting Australia in world cups in "ENGLAND" - not outside of England

Hmm...

Any chance of still getting 1 point?

Agreed, Malik isn't going to do anything. Could play Asif in place of him? At least he could potentially give some quick, valuable runs.

Guys we wilk probably get rolled over, since pretty much every neutral is backing us to win today :))

If Harris doesn't play this, our best player of swing bowling, and Shaheen doesn't play over Wahab then it tells us that Mickey is an overrated coach.

We need to play to the conditions, not play the same 11 that barely got us through the last game.

Mohsin Khan trolled by Rashid Latif and co on PTV for talking too much :)) Fakhar e Alam jumps in and takes a break :)))

Turn on PTV sports if you guys like some drama. Mohsin has lost it.. Rashid and Akhtar kept smiling at his analysis..hes gone berserk..Told Fakhar-e-alam this is disrespectful and wont answer any questions now.

Need this match not to be washed out, Aus to pick up the W and make things easier for us please.

haha yea i was watching this is some next level drama :)))

The pitch is green and has been under covers for two days...

Today's match will decide whether that win against England was a fluke or not. I shall be a fan of Pakistan immediately if they can beat Australia today

Green pitch. Cold, windy day. Both Pakistan and Australia likely to go in with 4 quicks. Toss is going to be extremely crucial here.

Even if they lose today they beat England fair and square there was nothing flukey about that

Looks a bowl first pitch. Hope Sarfraz finally wins a toss.
