What's new

Australia v Pakistan | 2nd Test | Melbourne | Dec 26-30, 2016 | Day 4

I thought dead ball was only if the helmet isn't being worn?

Here is what the Laws of Cricket say:

a) The ball becomes dead when

(i) it is finally settled in the hands of the wicket-keeper or of the bowler.

(ii) a boundary is scored. See Law 19.3 (Scoring a boundary).

(iii) a batsman is dismissed. The ball will be deemed to be dead from the instant of the incident causing the dismissal.

(iv) whether played or not it becomes trapped between the bat and person of a batsman or between items of his clothing or equipment.

(v) whether played or not it lodges in the clothing or equipment of a batsman or the clothing of an umpire.

(vi) it lodges in a protective helmet worn by a fielder.

(vii) there is an award of penalty runs under either of Laws 2.6 (Player returning without permission) or 41.2 (Fielding the ball). The ball shall not count as one of the over.

(viii) there is contravention of Law 41.3 (Protective helmets belonging to the fielding side).

(ix) Lost ball is called. See Law 20 (Lost ball).

(x) the match is concluded in any of the ways stated in Law 16.9 (Conclusion of match).

(b) The ball shall be considered to be dead when it is clear to the bowler’s end umpire that the fielding side and both batsmen at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play.

2. Ball finally settled

Whether the ball is finally settled or not is a matter for the umpire alone to decide.

But this didn't "lodge", it rebounded. So isn't that out?

Commies saying if it strikes the helmet its dead ball.

Not out.

Rebound catches off helmets will be allowed October onwards apparently...

I thought that would be out actually. Argh.

I've just uploaded the Laws of Cricket. It's out unless it becomes dead by getting stuck in the helmet.

Don't know about text here, I have seen it few times TV replays checking that if it hit on helmet of a short leg before bouncing and not given out. So it was similar situation.

See law 32 section 3(e)

That was not out.

Rahul caught a similar one after it bounced from his hands and slightly brushed his helmet grill and it was judged not out.

:out, match could become interesting if the Australian lead is only 50 or so runs.

Bad ball by Yasir ..... short and on the leg ..... too bad Azhar got hit by it .... he walked off the field, so should be OK ..... sure hope so.

Need to wrap this up ASAP !!

BTW..... Wasn't there supposed to be Thunderstorms or something :sanga

WTH MAN !!!!!!!!

Basically this Australian team is a team of 3 batsmen in Warner, Khawaja and Smith.

Pakistan haven't exposed the frailties of the line up properly enough like they did against England.

Yep. Law 32 section 2(e) states that a striker won't be out caught if the ball touches a fielders protective helmet. However, the ball is still in play and you can get the striker run out if he attempts a run I guess.

From his third spell onwards wicket keeper and slip fielder should take the same position they would for Yasir when Sher Khan is bowling!

Ideal situation would be if there is no more cricket for the day.... i.e. Last Session is washed away / out !!

Early tea...

We've had a better session, but can't really see how we can win this game. So hope it starts pouring :P!

I think that should be the end of any result in this test.

Drawn game !

A fit Sohail Khan always better than Perfect Amir

Infact even a half fit

The commentators were suggesting that Amir trying bowling some rubbish since good bowling didn't get him a wicket.

Looks like Sohail took the advice instead, short and wide worked for him.

Something for our bowlers to consider, heading to Sydney.

Handscomb has an average of 83 after 5 innings.

Well might be end of today, but if Australia declares tomorrow morning 1st up and Inserts pak, if it doesn't rain then funny things can happen.

At the very least with our long and sour batting lineup it's fair to expect them to hand around the day

Will there be play today? Can anyone please reply quick so I can plan day accordingly

I took an off from work today so I can watch this and get some other work done and turns out there's no cricket

Naseeb mai hi nahi hai match dekhna. Don't think I've watched a single delivery 'live' this match

Apparently it's bucketing down in Melbourne right now very heavily. I suppose there probably won't be anymore play today.

Nope, raining buckets.

I hope it stays that way. We were plumetting towards a defeat.

Latest:

3.40pm Still raining but much lighter. So that is better news. Even better news is that Azhar Ali is fine. Walking around and talking normally.

Maddinson has 5-6 :steyn

Indeed, and Renshaw has about 33 also after 5 innings.

So the average of the averages of the 3 new arrivals Maddinson, Renshaw and Handscomb is around a respectable 40.

No rain predicted for tomorrow, so that would be a good day to take off from work if you want to watch it live.

What happened to Azhar, I didn't follow today's play. Good to know he is fine.

Calling shaz619 who was saying Aus pitches have got back life and these are difficult to bat :yk

Australia will be hoping to have at least 15 overs of play left, so that they could add another 100 runs and declare overnight.

He was fielding at short-leg, Yasir bowled a half-tracker which Wade smashed straight onto the top of his helmet. Was down initially, probably dazed but then recovered and walked off. Will probably be checked for a concussion.

Pakistani fans fearing 50 for 9 wickets type session any time we bat again

Australia are favourites to win this match now. Add another hundred and give pakistan two sessions.

Ok thank God nothing serious. We are already carrying two passengers in our batting line up, if Azhar would have been unfit to play then it would have been better that we just forfeit the match.

It looked pretty serious at first but then he started moving around and got up... Wade seemed relieved.

Scratch that - seems like he passed the concussion Test.
