Already has a feel of a dead rubber, S Africa probably going through the motions.

You really think they don't badly want to claim number 1 ranking and be the first side to whitewash us at home?

Katich again managing to irritate Australian fans.

In the form of his life and keeps throwing it away without making hundreds.

Agreed. Should have cashed in on. Chanderpaul, Smith are cashig in on their form big time.

See that is how Morkel should be bowling, excellent delivery first up to a guy who scored 101 and 99 in his last two innings.

No you cannot :9:

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not comparing them by averages or runs by position or any of that statistical mumbo jumbo. I'm saying that, if one were to bat for my life between the two, it would be Inzamam. Any day of the week.

And that is because Inzamam was the better player under pressure. That alone makes him the better overall batsman in my humble opinion.

I am sure they do, but was commentating on how they were playing at the time, livened up now tough with the 2 wkts.

Hussey's average for 2008 was 37.5 runs per inns in the 14 tests Australia played, with 2 hundreds

No argument from me there.

Hussey with an average of 59 playing like a man who doesn't know where his next run will come from, remarkable really.

Yes he has been shocking.

So has Hayden. Looks like a journeyman. Got lucky a few times. Probably will make a hundred now. Hopefully not.

In a way it's good for hayden. He's seens two wickets fall around him. The teams in trouble and it takes his focus off his problems now and step up for the team. I always support the old pro's looking for one more day in the sun. No more than a 50 please.

Not sure if he is delaying the inevitable or not and from an Aussie perspective what would be the best time for him to retire.

Have a feeling that with Sidebottom and/or Anderson in the side if he does make to the Ashes his average will tumble below 50 (if it hasn't already by then).

Any chance of Hayden retiring after making a ton at the SCG. Leaving with his head held high?

Might be a bit cheeky to say it'll be like jumping off a sinking ship :)

Not much I don't think. Will have to be removed from the team with an angle grinder.

Right now. Time for new blood.

just some info - Jayasuriya is playing in South Africa for Dolphins in SA domestic ODIs. Just showed some highlights on some channel called S
McGrath was in Channel 9 halftime show for his foundation

game started and Hayden with a four in first over
Aus 82-2

With the bit of pace and swing stey's starting to get , he could be very dangerous to the right handers if they get a wicket now.

looked like a great catch by Boucher but came off the thigh pad

Hayden 31 - Hussey 21 - both off about 75 balls each
Aus 109-2 after 33 overs

And Hayden bowled. Inside edge to stumps. Off Steyn
Aus 109-3 after 33.3 overs.
lot of applause as Hayden walks back

Has he secretly announced his retirement to public?

He still has one innings. Maybe sympathetic or to show support
Aus will have Johnson batting at 8 so they bat till then

Australia has to bat first until they win one. Then comes the next step for Malik to make a decision - bat or bowl

Morkel has had no firte this tour. Hope he gets it right before they head back to S.A.

Been a bit disappointing but can still bowl unplayable deliveries.

This is a good batting surface. Two of the shots were dreadful. You could forgive punter being his first ball.

We know about the bowling but very annoying to see all the batsmen continuing to make the same mistakes. Hayden and Katich donating their wickets again, Clarke hitting the ball in the air when there is absolutely no need to.

McDonald has nice technique (aside from the first ball) but we need these 2 to make 150+ each to put up decent first innings total.

This is a very good South African team. Clarke has to play percentage cricket. This pointless aggressive cricket will sink the team further and further.

:)))

McDonald copped one. Man that was nervous attempt to evade the bouncer. Let us see what this guy is made of.

whoa.. South Africa is really turning it on. Some real venomous stuff from Saffers to the new comer.

nice to see some aggro...there's been very little on field shennanigans this series. I'd like to have seen a little more needle out there .

Ian Chappel makes a good point, its a shame its taken for Australia to come back to the pack for other teams to be competitive rather than other sides raising their games. England in 2005 and India in 2001 were the only series were teams raised their performance, leading to two fantastic series. This is series along with the series in India haven't been in the same class unfortunately, its more about Australia's decline than South Africa's/India's incline IMO. Meaning the quality of the cricket hasn't been of the highest standard.

Australia can be happy about one thing. They don't have the worst opening pair partly due to Katich though. SL has that tag. Already SL lost 2 wickets.

Sadly, i can not watch the match live at the moment. Getting prepared to depart from the home to resume my job. Nevertheless, I, keen to know how was the bowling deliveries from South Africa bowling attack

kallis all up in the 140's consistantly this series again. Showing his value.

Steyn to come back and reverse swing out the tail if another wicket or two go down here.

Shaun Pollock have always been a very dear favorite player of mine. His bowling average of 23.11 is phenomenal. However, what I didn't look up over StatsGuru till now is his performance by periods.

Man, till the end of 2003 he was averaging 20.83 having played 78 Test matches :O . That's simply unbelievable. That's the best Test bowling average in history. It was just his later couple of years where his wickets started to cost him a little more for which his average went up by 23.11

Add to that he also average above 30 with the bat. Truly a magnificent all rounder of the highest quality.

Steyn's getting the pace up nicely here. Can he crank it up a notch more and get over the 150's again ?

McDonald gone to Ntini 5/162

This is a disaster

Not yet. Butr one more wicket and Aussies could be bowled out on a day 1 flatbed.

Well McDonald hung around but he is not a Test quality number 6.

Ntini figured him out pretty quickly.

If Australia's tail for the first time this series don't fire, this test could become an non event.

Some ginger guy is out.

Who is he?

By what I saw today i wouldn't bother remembering his name. Don't think we'll be seeing much of him.

Let's see what he can do with the ball first before we judge too soon.

Our replacement all rounder (Andrew McDonald) who is playing in place of our replacement all rounder (Watson) who would have been playing in place of our usual all rounder (Symonds).

If thats the best Aus can do - than they need to be worried.

Yep. Although does depend how he bowls.

But considering the first choice all rounder never deserved selection anyway, neither did the second choice all rounder, it is hardly surprising that the third choice all rounder is not a Test quality batsman from ball 1.

A few blokes with 10,000 odd domestic runs and averages around 50 who can be rightfully annoyed at this turn of events in selection.

It has been 31 years since Australia lost Melbourne and Sydney Tests in the same summer.
