What's new

Bad light stops play on Day 3 with Australia comfortably placed on 271/2, trail by 205 runs

Don't be too hard on your bowlers in a match that's given 6 wickets in 8 sessions. You could land a plane on this pitch.

I understand. But if these bowlers perform previously then yes. Nauman failed to get wickets in spinning tracks against Bangladesh, Naseem failed in bowling friendly wickets in Australia.

PCB have wasted all the hype, goodwill and excitement for this Test by producing this 1980s style pitch. Rawalpindi curator should be sacked.

Loudmouth Rameez made big boasts about how he's going to fix the pitches and train the curators. Needs to come out and explain this.

Indeed what a pathetic pitch, all the hype of the series related to return of Aussies after a break of 20 years has been ruined.

2 more tests to go after this.

You can’t just sack guys earning peanuts as it is.

It's kind of embarrassing that Pakistan is secretly relying on rain to save face in this match.

Playing at 2.3-2.5 RPO has long been Pakistan's way of playing Test cricket which has come to bite them on numerous times yet they never learn.

Pakistan needs a radical mindset change in how to approach playing test matches. It starts with a captain who has a clear idea of how his team should play like. Babar is a timid personality who can easily be bullied around into accepting other people's opinions. Plus I don't think he really is that good anyways when it comes to match awareness. I will cite the example of Kohli who in his first test match as captain laid down the marker of what he wanted from his players. Told his batters that they will go for the chase in Adelaide, when they required about 360 runs on the last day. Even though they lost, it was the sign of what was to come.

Unless rain comes or Australia loses wickets in a cluster, Pakistan will be under severe pressure in the 3rd innings. Irrespective of pitch being a road, Pakistan capitulates far too easily under pressure. Melbourne 2016 was a road as well but we all saw what happened on the last day. Couldn't even survive 55 overs.

Babar almost got his teeth and bones knocked out had that shot from Smith struck him. Chachu was adamant on bowling leg side. Meanwhile Naseem getting schooled by the Aussie batsmen.

Switching off from this borefest

Reminds me of the pitches when India toured pak and everyone was making big hundreds including a 300 by sewag

Fawad's body language in this match is like a Kenyan player. First the poor guy doesn't play professional cricket for months, and when the time came, couldn't bat because they sent hitters over him which resulted in nothing. Then he dropped an easy catch, and is now goofing around the field at the boundary.

Last years Rawlipindi wicket was an excellent one against SA.

There was something there for the fast bowlers but if you grinded down you could make runs too. It was a very good match that could have gone either way.

This wicket in comparison has been far too flat and in the batsmen’s favour.

Players have gone off the field for bad light with Australia 271/2. Unlikely we'll get more play today, and even more unlikely we'll get a result in this match.

Instead of calling people idiots yesterday maybe you two will see how you play Test cricket in the modern day. And learn a thung or two. Aus have knocked off our full day score in less than 3 sessions. They saw its a road and went for it and put us under pressure. Instead of our pathetic tuktuktuktuk

Your are wrong .india tour to Pakistan in 2004 ( Sehwag 300) was nail biting contest where india won both the series ( 2-1 test & 3-2 ODI). I think you were talking about 2006-7 tour where pitch were totally flat .

The fact that Azhar Ali scored 180, you just knew this was a road and that the Aussies would make hay also

Azhar Ali has been past it for a while

Pakistan should count their stars no that time is being taken out of the game.

I think it’s in Pakistan’s best interest if they get out of this Test with a draw now, Aussies could well have enough runs lead on Day 5 and put the mentally weak Pakistan side under considerable pressure

They did that once before with Fawad yet he would score better rate than our so called hitters. Best someone like Iftukhar can do is hit an odd 6 after wasting lots of balls. Iftikhar selection was mind boggling considering the pitch is flat and we had plenty of batting, even Nauman and Sajid can bat quite well. A bowler should have been played instead.Fawad could also bowl better than Iftikhar.

Australia are not playing Test cricket. This is unfair. They think this is an ODI match. And even India against SL did not play proper Test cricket.

Only Azhar and Imam know how to play Test cricket.

20 overs lost due to bad light !!!
They should start bit early otherwise huge advantage to Pakistan might be wasted

This was expected , needed experience in fast bowling department. Naseem is not ready for test cricket , lacks consistency in line and length. Only 22 FC matches and those include 9 test matches. His last test match was a failure and between that he hasnt actually done enough to retain his place or win it.

Haris rauf and mohammad waseem too are not ready. Need some experienced domestic cricketers like abbas or even sameen gul , who have done the hard yards.

Test match starts too late in SC, especially since throughout our cricket season (Sep-Mar) we don't have long daylight hours like England or Australia. Also pollution/smog (peak crop burning season coincides with cricket season), haze, weather, stadium/city design etc. ensures too much time is taken off from the game in the form of bad light. In places like Kolkata/Guwahati it is even worse because sun sets around 4:30 pm, India weirdly has only one time zone for such a wide geographical expanse.

Rest of the world can afford late starts as they can make up overs late in the evening. No scope for SC, our boards must wake up and enforce necessary changes.

Test cricket already has too many things going against it in this T20 age, high time we start applying common sense in matters like this.

Play called-off due to bad light

Tomorrow play will start at 9:45 PST

Despite the quality of the pitch this could have been an interesting test match if not for bad light. Who knows even with a lead of 50-60 (either side) with around 4 sessions left in the test match, it could have been an interesting day 5 in a battle of nerves. Still draw would have been the most likely result but it could have been a thrilling draw with a couple of Pak batters fending off a late Aussie attack to get their total to safety, or a tempting 4th innings target for Aus. Now all that intrigue is lost, heading towards a boring draw.

Very poor pitch. Gonna be a boring draw.

Hopefully next one is better. Need to bring Shaheen and Cummins in the game

Thank you Pakistan for promoting test cricket. This is exactly how it should be played. It's legacy.

Not many draws happen these days. I have a feeling we're going to see some action today and tomorrow.

Australia top-order make merry as Pakistan bowlers grind away

PAK v AUS, first test, day three, report

Fifties from Usman Khawaja, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne helped Australia reduce the deficit in the first innings of the Rawalpindi Test.

With bad light stopping play early on day two, Australia had only played one over. With a new day came new challenges.

The Pakistan bowlers were brilliant, bowling some probing lines and lengths with little help from the surface. David Warner even copped a few blows on his body. However, the hosts didn't reap any rewards for their effort. Usman Khawaja was dropped early in the day on 22 off Shaheen Afridi when Fawad Alam at gully could not hold onto the ball as it flew off the thickish edge of Khawaja's one-handed drive.

The Australia openers did well to see off the tricky first hour and as the day progressed gained confidence to hit back. Khawaja, being the aggressor, was the first to bring up his fifty in 67 balls. Warner too followed suit a few overs later, registering his 33rd half-century in Tests. The duo looked comfortable in the middle, taking Australia to 138/0 at Lunch, still, 338 runs behind Pakistan's first-innings total.

Even after lunch, Australia’s approach looked quite impressive. Shaheen Afridi was brought into the attack to prompt the left-handers to make errors but both the batters continued the momentum and brought up their 150 runs opening partnership.

Sajid Khan from the other end kept angling the balls into the left-handers and ultimately managed to break the partnership on 156. Warner who had been comfortably playing Sajid’s fuller length deliveries on backfoot, miss judged one and attempted a cut shot of just short delivery and ended up getting his stumps shattered.

The foundation had been laid by the Australian openers and with Khawja still on the crease, new batter Marnus Labuschagne just had to take his time to settle in the middle. While Marnus took his time, Khawaja was slowly approaching his century but with just three runs short of his century Khawaja attempted a reverse sweep off Nauman Ali, a shot which led to the end of his brilliant innings on 97 (159).

Tea break was not far when Steven Smith came out to the crease and to make full use of the situation Shaheen Afridi welcomed Smith with some bouncers but Smith handled the situation maturely and Australia went for tea 222/2.

With dark clouds hovering above, the final session of the day started. Labuschagne and Smith continued their innings with total control, and Labuschagne with a pair of boundaries in Sajid Khan’s over brought up his fifty.

Like day two, players were forced off the field due to bad light and stumps was called eventually after it started drizzling in Rawalpindi.

Naseem bowled fine. He definitely needs improvement and proper coaching.

Drop and 2 fours. Pathetic from Fawad. That was an easy catch

Yes, he will start improving once he cross 35 years of age, need some more coaching for atleast 8-10 years.

I don't understand the reason behind calling it off due to bad light. I mean why cricket is not improvising itself.

We have day and night test matches now. Why can't we just use Pink ball in both day test and night test matches?

I agree.

ICC has to change quite a few outdated rules.

Concept of "bad light" is laughable when there are floodlights available.

That's not me as I dislike T20

Fans of Test cricket need to watch Australia or Indian batting to see how to bat in modern games instead of boring the crowd to death on dead pitches.

Australia showed us how to bat on this pitch. Had it not been for bad light they'd be near 330.

The 25 overs Azhar and Imam wasted by scoring only 80 was also unforgivable

It wasn't even 80 but was 57.....from 25 overs.

This entire reason if we draw or are put under pressure on the 5th day is because Imam and Azhar played for their records. On a dead pitch. Nothing else.

How do you know Pakistan management didn't want this pitch.

Usman Khawaja speaking to the press:

"It's probably because I've been out of the system. I was out of Cricket Australia for two years" [about his confidence etc]

"I know it's not the be all and end all any more.

"I had two years out where I thought I wasn't going to play for Australia again. And they were two really good years, I had a lot of fun.

"My wife and I had a daughter. A lot of good things outside of cricket gives you a lot of perspective."

"All these things end up putting it in perspective" [regarding Shane Warne]

"It doesn't really bother me as much what people say about me too. I've been in and out of teams so much. I've been dropped and come back.

"I just play the way I want to play. I just think of it as if I'm playing club or Shield cricket back home That's how I take it for Australia now.

"I don't think that will change between now and when I stop playing."

Babar has been made in charge of the Pakistani team. He has the power to select his playing eleven. Am pretty sure he was asked about the pitch he wanted

Yasir should be brought back for the next game alongwith Fahim and Hasan and Naseem, Nauman and Iftikhar should be dropped.

It's a three match series and not all test series are won 3-0 or 0-3 t20 lovers need to hold their horses if not for rain and lost overs this game will have a result

By batting like this we had actually messed up any chance of a win, only 2 results possible now draw and Australia; minnow mentality is Pakistan crickets forte and it was seen to full effect here.

100% agreed.

I really wanted us to make a statement first Test and set the tone for rest of the series.
