In their six-series bilateral history in Test cricket, dating back to 2001, Bangladesh has yet to secure a single victory against Pakistan. With a head-to-head record of 12-0 [one draw] in favor of Pakistan, the odds do not look promising for the visitors. However, as the saying goes, cricket is a funny game, and Bangladesh will have arrived on Pakistan's shores with a point to prove—not just to the world, but to themselves—that they belong at this level.
Bangladesh suffered a heavy defeat in their last series against Sri Lanka in March this year. However, a series draw against New Zealand last winter should give them confidence as they face an unpredictable Pakistan side. The past month has seen civil unrest and turmoil engulfing the country, leading many Bangladesh Cricket Board officials to flee. Quality Test cricket might offer the general public some respite, perhaps even a faint smile.
Meanwhile, the hosts haven't played a Test match for most of this year. Their last Test series ended in a 3-0 defeat away to Australia. With a new head coach and fresh ideas, the team hopes to rejuvenate and finally deliver on their potential. Naseem Shah's return to the squad after injury is a major boost, while batters Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique will be looking to cement their places in the Test lineup for the foreseeable future.
