Just because they whitewashed a number 8 ranked Pakistan side (who is struggling to win even at home against Zim) and made their place in a KO match fir the first time does not mean they are not minnows anymore!
Kenya who is not even a test playing nation also made it to the WC QFs in 2003 WC!They are still minnows They even beat WI in 1996 WC!
Zimbabwe beat Pakistan in a Test series IN PAKISTAN IN THE 90s when we had a superb team a thing Bangladesh and Ireland can only dream of!Even against this Pakistan side!They are still minnows

Bangladesh even lost to Hong Kong and Afghanistan last year!

Why are people getting so impressed with them?

So hammering Pakistan at home, beating England and then thrashing one of the Associates you named in the OP means nothing.

People need to grow up and quit hating BD for no reason.

They're clearly not minnows, whitewashing NZ (twice) and Pakistan at home while also beating the WI at home and SL I think away in ODI series is clear proof of that
 
Its a different case from Zim and Kenya. Bangladesh board has much more resources than Kenya and Zim ever had. And the FC structure and U-19 talent from Bangladesh is comparable to top 8 teams.

Btw Kenya was benefited by NZ refusal to tour them in 03 WC, they only beat one top team (SL).

Most of the current Bangladeshi players are in their tweens. They can build on this team and can also groom next generation.

Why people still reluctant to rate Bangladesh LOI team is beyond me!

Why are so many obsessed with Bangladesh ? Every other thread seemingly on Bangladesh.

They're becoming a strong team in home conditions and as mentioned above have beaten NZ, Pakistan and WI in home ODI series. Made 2012 Asia Cup Final beating India and Sri Lanka as well as reaching QF of 2015 by beating England, who they also beat at the 2011 WC.

They're still a weak Test side though.

Listen I am a big big BIG fan of Irish cricket and with the infrastructure they hav they get they wil be WAY AHEAD of Bangladesh in 10 years
Bangladesh after 16 years of Test status and housting 3 WCs still managed to achieve this much that too against 7 and 8 ranked Pak WI and NZ(in 2013) sides AT HOME only!
Do You think if Ireland was given test status in 1999 they would be here?they would have become aforce like Sti Lanka about now!

But thats not Bangladeshs fault is it? Every Bangladeshis admits they were given test cricket miles too early. The standard of Bangladesh in 1999 would be the equivalent to Namibia today, they were hopeless but due to politics and a massive fanbasde they were given the holy grail.

In the last 7 or so years they've made good progress, 2007 WC they beat 2 good sides, 2011 they beat England and in 2015 they made the knock outs and very nearly beat one of the finalists. They've made the next step up now and IMO are a good ODI and t20 side. Test they still have some way to go I agree.

As for Ireland, simple fact is Ireland if given all the support we want could potentially after several years be like Zimbabwe from the late 90's, decent side with great work ethic who fight hard. Thats about it.

Bangladehs by virtue of their massive population could well be a force in cricket in a couple decades and could well challenge for world cups. Thats why they were given test cricket anyway, it sure as hell wasnt down to quality.

But, that aside, they're a good limited overs team who are a bit weak mentally, definitely not minnows IMO.
 
We grown up watching following Pakistan cricket!! Imran, kadir, wasim, miadad, inzi, saeed, waqar was our childhood hero!!!
Always supported Pakistan when they are not against us ( BD) !! Even when Pak played us we want certain player to do well!!! Like we expecting BD win bur Saeed Anwar to score!!!
After finding so much hate on this forum against BD!! For the first time in my life, I expecting Pakistan to lose against Zimbabwe!!! I was trying to support Pakistan as I doing from my childhood!!! But surprised to find myself supporting Zimbabwe unintentionally!!!

I guess we will find out when they play India and South Africa. Personally I think they have improved a lot but won't be strong enough to beat genuinely strong teams. The wins against Pakistan were impressive, but against an experimental side weakened by injuries to about 5 front line bowlers.

same was the case with me as a pakistani untill that 2012 Asia Cup and from that point onward there is atleast twice the hatred in your country for pak generally than in pak for BD generally, and there are countless example of how on every front, forum, through fans attitude, through dirty politics of BCB, you guys have shown your hate toward Pak, remember how you guys supported pak in 2011 WC quarter, but now the relations are totally different and is BD fans in general are more responsible for that, even though some pak fans are too. So be realistic and see the flip side of things too, we defeated you guys for what 16 years left, right and centre, but one bad tour and you guys are acting like it was BD who has always been bashing us for last 16 years, so it's 2015 and you have to accept this better reality that it is BD who is more to do with all this hatred for BD from Pak fans, and remember the reactions of BD fans when afridi played that asia cup knock, you guys are such a sour losers, it is one thing to be passionate supporter of your team but other to react so poorly when other teams wins.

Internet forums aren't really representative of population of either country, from my observance both Pakistani and Bangla crowds are usually pretty generous in supporting visiting sides.
 
Lately, BD bashing seems to have become very popular on PP. Bangladesh can no longer be counted as minnows in LOI formats. They will be a challenge for every team at home. Lots of bitterness regarding that 3-0 whitewash. :P

And why is Bangladesh in the picture? We haven't played cricket for over a 3 week period and we are referred to as minnows. No question that we are minnows in tests but in ODIs we have improved significantly and have been doing well in the past although 2014 was a horror year for us.

Its seriously pathetic stuff from some of our fans, stemming from I don't know what but it certainly comes across as sour grapes.

So what if a few of their players/politicians have come out with arrogant or bad comments ? Have they not heard our loudmouth ex-players and media hacks barking after every match ?

I for one am sick of the colonial mentality of the top cricket nations and glad to see teams like Bangladesh and Ireland emerge. The more top cricketing nations the better.

seriously agree with this. It's the new trend to talk smack about Bangladesh because they thrashed us. Only if people were actual cricket fans they would appreciate the game and skills of each player rather worry about what country the player belongs to. I for once am happy with Bangladesh cricket, they've not been stagnant ever since they started playing, and I don't expect them to be.

If Malik didn't return we'd be minnows too and would've lost yesterday to Chigumbura and the other zimb batsmen who looked set to chase 370.

Then Bangladesh and the other countries would've ganged up and called us minnows.

Yes it certainly does come across as sour grapes. Pakistan are not playing very good cricket in LOI's of late and the team is in transition after loss of Misbah but BD can only beat what's in front of them. It's not their fault that Irfan is constantly injured, that amir was banned and ajmal has lost his potency. In fact, this kinda exposes Pakistan's lack of bench strength and that is a worrying factor IMO.
 
Bangladesh are not the same minnow that they were 10/15 years back. They have improved a lot and are a much better side now. Good teams need to give them due respect, else BNG have the ability to spring a surprise.

Despite all the hate, roadblocks, media pressure the guy still worked hard on his game for Pakistan aND is now back in full flow with a fluent 100.

He is the light in a dark Era of Pak cricket #realpatriot #malikmania #nayapakistan

Bangladesh had an equivalent performance to Kenya's 2003 semifinal run in 2007. Kenya only beat 2 top sides in 2003, Bangladesh beat India and South Africa in 2007.

Bangladesh also had a 3-3 record in 2011, albeit at home. WI had a 3-3 record and went to the QF round on net run rate.

And of course there is 2015, when Bangladesh were the LEAST prepared of all 14 teams.

So 3 consecutive top 8 (or equivalent) finishes in world cups for Bangladesh, once at home, twice away.

But we are still Test minnows.
 
I think it's very harsh to call Bangladesh a minnow team , they've beaten us , india, newzealand so whoever's calling them minnows need to check the records and step out of the hate chamber they're living in . let the records speak for themselves and stop calling each others minnows because when the chips are down we hide like cockroaches .
 
Bangladesh was minnow, Bangladesh is minnow and Bangladesh will be minnow, no matter what! period.
 
Even their players are from India & Pakistan, i heard Tamim iqbal & Shoummo Sarkar are Indian. Also Nasir hossain and Taskin has Pakistani background, go figure out...

Nice try buddy. Yes, Tamim Iqbal Khan is probably originally Indian going back several generations...but going back before that he is likely Pathan. Never heard anything about Soumya, Nasir, or Taskin. Might as well throw in Mominul if you're basing it off skin tone and other superficial traits. Based on that Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan aren't Indians and neither is both Imran Khans, Junaid Khan, Afridi or Younis Pakistani.

My own ancestors came from Yemen and Afghanistan...so based on your dumb logic I'm Arab and Pashtun. Not quite.

Almost all Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, and Indians have Turko-Persian/Arab roots. And before that all Indians decended from Vedic Aryans who originated from north of the Caucasus mountains.

So all Pakistani players are from Eastern Europe-Western Asia.

And if you go back 200,000 years or so, all humans orignated from the horn of Africa.

So all Pakistani and Indian cricketers are merely imports from Africa.

Minnows now, but the core group of their players is both talented AND young. They've learned a lesson we never have, which is to invest in a good talented domestic structure. Even Shakib is only 28.

While we play the likes of Sami, Malik, Hafeez, Gul, and many others, they took on the losses to give those guys a chance to develop. They're only going to get better, whereas there's no real guarantee with our board that we will.

They won't stay an 8th ranked team forever. I really think they can beat India and SA at least once, whereas I don't think our current team can.

Having said all that, they aren't world beaters, their fans need to chill out.

3-0 hurts. It'll take some time for them to digest it :)) Tbqf I still can't get over how you guys beat em with so much ease. Even Australia worked hard for their 3-0 win in UAE. :))

Why bitterness? I would rather spend more time in proving Bangladesh provide new rivalry to ODI than waste time proving they are not.

Rise of bangladesh cricket is not bad for the cricket.

The whole difference between minnows and major teams is the pedigree at Test level

Ban needs to win 2 consecutive series against top 8 to be considered non-minnows

they still are

the year they justify their test status by winning a few series against full strength top 8 teams is when they will no longer be called minnows

a few ODI series wins doesnt mean a whole lot in this context

the top non minnows sides have a pedigree in test cricket and Banglas still dont have that

Would also help if they stop thumping their chests after an ODI win here or there. Consensus is that it drives the rest of us up the wall.
 
16 years without a win against us and they whitewash a team with at least 5 injuries with a new captain in addition to Hafeez coming back from a ban and asking Umar Gul for miracles after an injury comeback. It's good that they managed to pull this off but BD need to fall back, you guys are still minnows. Pak is just going through a rut in ODI's.

Correction: Its not an ODI win here or there its now a full ODI Series win here or there, Bangladesh have beaten New Zealand twice, West Indies, Pakistan in full series now as well as draw vs Sri Lanka away from home and reach the quarter finals of the World Cup, reach Asia Cup Finals in the last few years. There is a big difference here and we don't thump chests we only come here to address the numerous haters here who have sadistic pleasure in picking on the newest test team in international cricket for anything and everyhing while they themselves thump chests. I clearly remember threads here saying how Pakistan is going to smash Australia during the world cups before the quarterfinals.

Absolutely, and it is a clear reflection that in the past 4 years Bangladesh have done better than Pakistan which is why they are ranked higher! It hasn't happened in a day!

As a cricket fan I would always LOVE to see Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Ireland and other upcoming nations to do well and beat these big guns as that'll make the game interesting! Not quite the same feeling with PPers here!
 
Poor thread, and insecure to the bone.

They are a very convincing unit in Limited Overs cricket and are far from pushovers at home. Currently producing very fine young cricketers in both departments of the game and have the best all-rounder and one of the best wicket-keeper batsman in the game today.

Shakib, Mushfiq, Tamim, Taskin and Sarkar would regular fixtures in our team in ODIs and T20s, with the likes of Shakib and Tamim in Tests as well. What does that make us?
