Bangladesh have named their 18-man squad for their tour of New Zealand consisting of two Tests.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan accepted Shakib Al Hasan's official request to opt-out of the tour of New Zealand. Bangladesh have chosen a like-for-like replacement for Shakib in Fazle Mahmud, who is a top-order batter and a left-arm spinner.

The 34-year-old has a wealth of experience in the Bangladesh first-class circuit, having played 94 matches since making his debut in 2004. He has scored 5353 runs at an average of 34.75 and has also picked up 32 wickets.

He has previously represented the Tigers in ODIs back in 2018 when Zimbabwe toured Bangladesh, though the outings were not too memorable as he registered ducks in both the games.

The two-match Test series will be played under the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 where Bangladesh are currently at the bottom of the table with zero points after Pakistan clean swept them at home. New Zealand are placed a spot above Bangladesh, thanks to a draw in Kanpur against India that fetched them four points.

The first Test will commence on New Year's day at Mount Maunganui before the action moves to Christchurch for the second Test on 9 January.

Squad: Mominul Haque (c), Shadman Islam, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Fazle Mahmud, Liton Das (wk), Nurul Hasan (wk), Yasir Ali, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Abu Jayed, Ebadot Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Khaled Ahmed, Shohidul Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mohammad Naim

Shakib has already abandoned his side

BCB needs to let go of him.

This could be painful, very painful for Bangladesh cricket.

Surely NZ will rest their main players.

Well sometimes it is easy to play well when expectations are low.

May be this is what the Bangla boys need. I would tell them to go and express themselves. Ather Ali Khan will always be there as the cheerleader.

1. New Zealand will pick a B side and few of their big players will play.
2. There will be very little interest in the series.
3. It will be an extremely one sided 2-0 win for Kiwis.

On paper I can’t see this being one of the more memorable recent tours…

Hopefully it provides some interest.

Batting on New Zealand pitches is difficult.BD will struggle as other subcontinent teams.BD are used to playing on slow spinning pitches. The bounce and swing will not be easy to handle for BD.

They will get a shock of their lives.

After being traumatised by spin against Pakistan now Bangladesh gets sweet chin music of pace:bond :lillee :cummins

Bangladesh are winless for 10 international games in a row (5 losses during World T20 and 5 losses against Pakistan at home).

They are supposed to tour South Africa after this NZ tour (3 ODIs and 2 Tests).

It should be tough few months for BD.

This test series serves no purpose, we all know the result. The only uncertainty is whether BD will able to draw any match with help from rain.

Its too late now but BD should not be included in next cycle of WTC, let them improve their FC circuit before allowing them to play test.

NZ will win at a canter. As I mentioned in another thread, I don't think Bangladesh would beat a Pakistan 3rd team.

(none of these played in the last test for Pak)

2nd 11/3rd 11:

Imam/Hafeez
Fakhar/Zeeshan Ashraf
Saud Shakeel/Shoaib Malik
Haris Sohail/Sohaib Maqsood
Asad Shafiq/Kamran Ghulam
Sarfraz Ahmed/Kamran Akmal
Nawaz/Iftikhar Ahmed
Shadab Khan/Bilal Asif
Naseem Shah/Wahab Riaz
Haris Rauf/Mohammed Abbas
Hasnain/Dhani

Can you honestly say that Bangladesh would beat the Pakistan 3rd team?

Bangladesh camp in New Zealand heaved a sigh of relief Thursday after all the cricketers of the touring squad tested Covid-19 negative in the third round of testing, and were allowed to begin training ahead of their two-match Test series against the home side.

The visiting side received a scare when spin bowling coach Rangana Herath tested positive for the novel coronavirus in New Zealand, while the isolation period of nine members of the Bangladesh contingent, including four players, was increased by a few days after close contact with a positive Covid-19 case on their flight.

Bangladesh team had to undergo a seven-day quarantine after arriving in the island country and following three rounds of negative results the available players are eager to start training, said team director Khaled Mahmud.

"There is good news from here (Thursday). Everyone tested Covid-19 negative in the results. We have been allowed to begin training. We were discussing (Wednesday) our training methods. We will go into isolation in the team hotel from the quarantine center (Friday). Those whose isolation period was increased, will stay at the center till (Monday). When we leave for team hotel, they will be able to avail the gym. They will check in to the hotel and join the rest of the team (Tuesday). Herath is isolating in the center separately. Everyone else is healthy," said Mahmud in a video message.

Despite being allowed to train, Bangladesh team were deprived by the weather as incessant rain intervened proceedings at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, consigning the touring side to the gym.

Bangladesh will play two Tests against the Kiwis which is part of the World Test Championship.

The first Test will begin on January 1 at Mount Manganui while the second and final Test will start on January 9 in Christchurch.

BLACKCAPS Neil Wagner and Devon Conway will get an early look at the touring Bangladesh team when they play for the New Zealand XI in a two-day match on the 28th and 29th of December on Bay Oval’s number two ground.

Both players have been selected in the side to get some much needed cricket under their belt ahead of the Walton Test Series against Bangladesh, starting on January 1 at Bay Oval.

Wagner is primed for a return to cricket having not featured in the team’s recent Test tour to India.

“I love getting the red ball in my hand and this match presents a perfect opportunity to get some miles in the legs ahead of what should be a hard fought Test series against Bangladesh,” said Wagner.

“The boys are happy to be back home and we can’t wait to play in front of our home fans over the New Year period in both Mount Maunganui and Christchurch.”

Conway’s inclusion sees him return to cricket after breaking his hand in the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final against England in November.

His selection in the New Zealand XI is subject to the hand injury being fully recovered in time to take the field.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back into some competitive cricket and hopefully I’m passed fit to play,” said Conway.

“I’ve just started batting again and testing out my hand so I’m hopeful of making my return for the New Zealand XI. There’s nothing like a match situation to really test it out and help build some confidence.”

New Zealand XI Selector, Gavin Larsen, said the fixture will not only give Wagner and Conway some competitive cricket, but it was also a chance for up-and-coming domestic talent to test themselves against international cricketers.

“You’ve got players like Brett Randell in there who’s been showing excellent form for Northern Districts this season,” said Larsen.

“Brett’s proved a real handful for anyone he’s come up against. It will be great to see if he can continue that strong form against quality international batsmen,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wellington Firebirds batsman, Tim Robinson and Otago Volts batsman, Jacob Cumming, are another two who have shown promise at age-group level.

“Both Tim and Jacob are emerging talents and have already made promising starts to their cricketing careers. I know they will both relish the chance to play for the New Zealand XI and show people what they’ve got.”

Brendon Donkers will coach the New Zealand XI for the two-day warm-up fixture.

The match will be live scored on the NZC website.

Latham to lead in Tests against Bangladesh

Tom Latham has been named BLACKCAPS captain for the Walton Test Series against Bangladesh, starting at Bay Oval on New Year’s Day.

With regular captain Kane Williamson ruled out with an elbow injury, Latham will lead the side for an entire series for the first time, having stepped in to fill the role on four previous occasions.

A return to home conditions means the BLACKCAPS first home squad of 2021-22 has a seam bowling focus, with Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner, Kyle

Jamieson and Matt Henry all included.

Following an impressive start to his Test career in England, Devon Conway returns to the squad after breaking his hand in the ICC T20 World Cup semi-final against England in November.

There’s no space for a specialist spinner in the 13-man squad, meaning left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel misses out despite his heroics in India, with Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell covering the spin and seam all-rounder spots, respectively.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead is confident he has all bases covered for both Bay Oval and Hagley Oval.

“It’s great to be back home and at venues we know well, and where we’ve had success in recent times” said Stead.

“It’s obviously disappointing not to have Kane available for this series but, as we noted in India, he is undergoing a sustained period of rest followed by rehabilitation, strengthening and gradual batting loading

“We have every confidence in Tom leading the side - he’s done an excellent job in the past when called upon.

“You do feel for Ajaz after his record-breaking display in India. However, we’ve always applied a horses-for-courses selection policy and believe the players selected best fit the way we want to take on Bangladesh here at home.”

Stead also noted the inclusion of both Ravindra and Mitchell.

“We feel having both Rachin and Daryl in the squad gives us a nice balance and the ability to pick a side best suited to the conditions we expect.”

It’s a slightly later than usual start for the BLACKCAPS home summer, with the Test at Bay Oval their first in Aotearoa since winning the ICC World Test Championship last season.

“We all remember the epic finish against Pakistan at Bay Oval last season and it’s great to be playing Test cricket there again this summer,” said Stead.

“The Hagley Oval Test in the New Year is becoming a staple of the home summer and I know the players and staff love coming to Christchurch to play at a venue where we’ve previously enjoyed plenty of success.”

“Seeing the crowd enjoying their cricket really lifts the guys and we know from grounds like Edgbaston in England how much the dressing-up can add to the atmosphere.” said Stead.

“While you may not see me in fancy dress, I’m sure the Kiwi summer crowds will get into it.”

The Walton Test series against Bangladesh starts on January 1 2022 at Bay Oval.

Bit odd to leave out Patel, but I imagine he will fancy a rest after bowling all of those overs in India! :)

I doubt spinners will have to bowl much against BD. Pacers are likely to bowl BD out quickly.

Herath joins Bangladesh team after recovering from Covid-19

Bangladesh spin bowling coach was tested positive for Covid-19 after arriving in New Zealand

Bangladesh spin bowling coach Rangana Herath finally joined the team ahead of the two-match Test series against New Zealand after completing his 14-day quarantine. He was tested positive for Covid-19 after arriving in New Zealand.

"MIQ (Managed Isolation and Quarantine) facilities released me today and now I'm so happy to be back with the team," Herath said in a video message sent by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) today.

"At the same time I had a kind of difficult two weeks with that (quarantine) but I'm so glad to be back and looking forward to the tour. At the same time, I must thank the BCB and New Zealand healthcare as they looked after me very well."

There were doubts over the series going ahead after Bangladesh players were sent to extended quarantine. However, all of them came back negative in the test then and started practice session. But, since Herath had to complete 14-day quarantine.

The Bangladesh players are currently in Tauranga for the last phase of preparation. Due to the quarantine, they couldn't play the two-day intra- squad match which was scheduled on December 22 and 23 but they will play a two-day game against the New Zealand XI on December 28-29.

The opening Test is at the Bay Oval in Tauranga starting on January 1 while the second Test will be played from January 9 at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

Useless tour. They were here last year as well and got thrashed. I mean, so did Pakistan but at east the cricket is more exciting with Pakistan.

It is a part of World Test Championship. Otherwise, BD have no business playing in New Zealand.

Last year's tour was part of ODI Super League.

Only 27.3 overs were bowled on the first day of the two-day match and NZ XI lost five wickets for 71 when rain stopped play

Bangladesh pacers Abu Jayed Rahi and Taskin Ahmed bowled well in the rain affected day one of the two-day practice match against New Zealand XI at Mount Maunganui, Tauranga Tuesday.

Only 27.3 overs were bowled on the first day of the practice match and New Zealand XI lost five wickets scoring 71 runs when rain stopped play.

Bangladesh elected to bowl first on a gloomy day and the bowlers shone in favorable conditions.

Right-arm pacer Jayed took three wickets conceding 27 runs.

One of his wickets was New Zealand XI captain Davon Conway who was caught for nought.

Taskin also bowled impressively as the right-arm paceman took two wickets giving away 26 runs.

The first Test will begin at Mount Maunganui Saturday, the first day of year 2022, while the second and final Test starts on January 9 in Christchurch.

Taskin is a very good fast bowler. Hope he stays fit and gets support from the other end.

I would love to see a true green pitch and good bounce and Kiwis playing Wagner , Boult , Milne and Mat Henry :))

Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque (L) and New Zealand skipper Tom Latham with the Test series trophy at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui

Wellington (AFP) – New Zealand and Bangladesh put the impending retirement of Black Caps great Ross Taylor at the forefront of preparations for the first Test which starts at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Saturday.

"He would love to go out with a 2-0 series win," New Zealand skipper Tom Latham said after the Black Caps' most prolific run scorer announced he will put away his Test whites after the two-match series.

But Bangladesh coach Russell Domingo said the tourists "want to try and make sure he doesn't have a great send-off. But we know we have to bowl well to get him out."

With the covers still on the pitch the day before the Test, neither side was prepared to confirm their line-up. New Zealand's only conundrum was choosing between spinner Rachin Ravindra or seam bowler Daryl Mitchell to fill the all-rounder slot.

"Whether it browns off or holds its moisture, we'll have to wait and see," said Latham, who will open the batting for New Zealand with Will Young while Devon Conway will bat at three having recovered from a self-inflicted broken hand.

The New Zealand emphasis will be on its four-pronged pace attack of Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson, who have kept the side unbeaten in their past 16 home Tests.

Bangladesh have never beaten the Black Caps and their batsmen have always struggled to adjust from their slow, turning wickets to the fast, green-topped pitches in New Zealand.

"We've got a reasonably good blueprint that we like to work with here in New Zealand," Latham said.

"They've done really well for us in these conditions over a long time."

Another driving force for New Zealand is the need to get more points in the World Test Championship following a loss and a draw in their two-match series in India earlier this month.

"Every game is really important so as many points as we can get as possible would be great," Latham said.

Bangladesh arrived in New Zealand on the back of a 2-0 home series loss to Pakistan and while the prospect of an upset win was unlikely, Domingo said his young side had plenty to play for.

"We know our record is not good in New Zealand in terms of Test match cricket (but) we're pretty excited. It's a good opportunity for some young players to test the waters in New Zealand and try and put on a good performance for us."

Bangladesh have won the toss and have opted to field

Wrong decision. Don't want to bat last in an away test match.

Bangladesh have bowled very well.
But realistically, New Zealand would have had 4 wickets by now on this wicket.

The pace quality of kiwis is much more superior to Bangladesh , I do not see Bangla team getting more than 200 in any innings

Happy New Year - to all PP'ers!
First day of the year and first day of the 1st test...
No KW - he injured?

BD bowled well.New Zealand scored 19 runs after 14 overs and were one wicket down. They are going along nicely now.I expect them to score minimum of 300 if not more. Will interesting to see how BD playing on this wicket.

Bangladesh let things slip there. Ideal conditions to bowl and end the session with only 1 wicket.

Bangladesh should have batted first here , its a wrong decision , the pitch has got better to bat after first session

It looks like Bangla bowlers will have a long long day here as Kiwis getting in stronger and stronger position here

New Zealand's first home series of the World Championship cycle is off to a strong start, thanks to professional batting performance on day one of the first Test against Bangladesh.

Despite the loss of captain Tom Latham (1) in the fourth over of proceedings, the home side dominated the first two sessions of the day, largely through a partnership between Devon Conway and Will Young.

The pair put on 138, before Young was run out for 52 by Najmul Hossain Shanto.

New Zealand ended the day on 258/5.

Looking at the green tinge in the Bay Oval surface, Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque won the toss and elected to send the hosts in. Shoriful Islam struck first after Latham's bat-pad edge found wicket-keeper Liton Das, though the tourists looked tentative with the ball, as Young and Conway shouldered arms often in the first half an hour.

The pair scored just 14 runs in the first hour of play, with Taskin Ahmed bowling four maidens in his first five overs. The pair moved through the gears in the second hour, with Conway hitting two boundaries in the space of three balls to open the floodgates.

Young added a boundary of his own in the next over, and the pair ticked over the fifty-run partnership in the final half-an-hour of the session. Mominul turned to the spin of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, though the hosts held firm to reach 66/1 by lunch.

Young feathered a delivery from Shoriful behind to Das in the first over after lunch, though the edge was not picked up Bangladesh's slip cordon, and an appeal was not forthcoming. Replays showed the ball made contact with the bat, and Young made the most of the chance, building on the partnership with Conway.

Conway brought up his half-century with a six, while young reached the milestone with a sweep off Mehidy. The pair had brought up their century-partnership in the meantime, as Mominul reflected on his decision to field with regret.

Mominul's Bangladesh would be thrown a lifeline however, after the batting pair broke their own partnership with a poor piece of running. Wanting a quick single, Young was sent back, as Najmul Hossain Shanto's clean pick-up and throw to Das caught the right-hander millimetres out of his ground.

The wicket brought Ross Taylor out to bat, in his final Test appearance at the Bay Oval. Off the mark with a trademark flick into the leg-side, Taylor was watchful early in his knock, though made the most of two consecutive short and wide deliveries from Ebadot Hossain, crashing both of them through the off-side for boundaries.

At the other end, Conway crawled to his second Test century. Facing nearly 20 deliveries to move from 93 to 100, he brought up three figures with a pull into the leg side.

Taylor mistimed a drive to Shadman Islam on 31, though it was rare blip in a strong day for the hosts. Conway continued on his charge with Henry Nicholls, as the pair added another 38.

Mominul brought himself into the attack, and his left-arm orthodox brought success, as Conway tickled an edge down the leg-side to Das on 122.

Tom Blundell and Nicholls looked like they had negotiated the new ball and the last hour of play, though Ebidot Hossain claimed Blundell on the last ball of the day, as the right-hander played onto his stumps.

One of the best Bangladesh performances ever in a test match. Stopped Kiwis going out of sight.

But.

- If you put the opposition in, you have to bowl them out in a day.
- Perfect bowling conditions in morning

So overall- Kiwis in full command.

I'm predicting an inning defeat for BD, only if Kiwi enforce the follow on.

Decent bowling job by Bangladesh. It will be up to the batsmen to put up some fight.

258-5 is not a bad score for a visiting bowling side. Don't think Sri Lanka or Pakistan have done that well bowling first in NZ in many years. This pitch is actually quite flat, don't let the grass fool you.

Bangladesh batters have often done well in NZ - Tamim, Shakib, Mushfiq, Mahmudullah, and Soumya have all scored big hundreds here in the last 5 years. They just need to bat sensibly.

NZ still on course to get 400, Bangladesh will have to work hard to keep them under 400.

You guys did very well. I hope the form carries on today. I don't have much hope from your batting though. That's why I'm still surprised about bowling first

Bangladesh did okay with the ball.

Real test should be when they bat. Kiwis are playing their main pacers.

Bangladesh bowled well but not sure if they will be able to make >250 with the bat…

Bangladeshi seamers greatest opening day overseas, sure we can criticise they should have bowled them out but lets be real, in these conditions away from home do we genuinely expect from BD’s seamers ? not really, this is good stuff from them and their coach Ottis to build on.

Shame on NZ really, no.1 team being pushed by BD at home!
