Pakistan's home season 2024-25

The Bangladesh cricket team are scheduled to tour Pakistan in August 2024 to play two Test matches. The Test series will form part of the 2023–2025 ICC World Test Championship. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) finalized the bilateral series as a part of the 2023–2027 ICC Future Tours Programme.

I want to see some juicy green pitches. Batting pitch will make the games very boring and one sided. Green pitches will at least give our bowlers some chance to win a session or two

Let's face it out batters will score 80 in green pitches and will score 180 on roads so it really doesn't matter to the batsman what pitch is offered

'Managing swing key in Pakistan'

Before taking the role of High Performance (HP) head coach in May 2023, former Bermuda batter David Hemp worked as the head coach of the Pakistan national women's team between 2020 and 2022. Earlier this year, the 53-year-old was officially assigned to the Bangladesh men's national cricket team as their batting coach. Since then, he has worked with the Tigers in several bilateral and global tournaments, including the recently concluded T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies. Bangladesh's next international engagement will be in Pakistan, where they will play two Tests, both part of the ICC Test Championship. Given Hemp's previous experience working in that part of the world, Bangladesh will have high expectations for his insights on the playing conditions there. On Monday, Hemp talked to The Daily Star's Samsul Arefin Khan over the phone from Australia on several aspects, including the team's preparation and chances for the series. The excerpts are as follows:

The Daily Star (DS): Bangladesh haven't played too many Tests in Pakistan over the years. How do you see the team's overall chances in this series?

David Hemp (DH): I think Pakistan are a strong side… and will be backing themselves to put up a good performance on home soil. It's not going to be an easy series in terms of conditions and surfaces. But traditionally, what we have seen over the last couple of years is that there have been good batting surfaces. It's conventional swing to start with and then reverse swing plays an important part in the game. But until we get there and see the conditions, because they might decide to leave grass on the wicket or it might be so much grass that the wicket might be suppressive [for batters], we aren't going to know about it.

DS: Pitches in Pakistan aren't like typical sub-continental ones, regularly assisting the pacers while some produce a lot of runs. What will be the biggest challenges for our batters in these types of surfaces?

DH: The key plan is managing conventional swing and then the reverse swing, and how we can assist the players to understand what they might come up against. If you look at the teams that had gone to Pakistan in the last couple of years, it's about occupying the crease for most of the time… so that you can bowl properly and set fields too. The matches had generally gone into the last day because they were very good for batting. For [taking] wickets, you have to work really hard but if you do get the ball swinging and reverse swinging, you have a really good chance to knock people over.

DS: Our HP team will be heading to Australia for two four-dayers while our A team will go to Pakistan prior to the Test series. Do you think our Test players should prepare with these matches too?

DH: I'm not sure what the selectors are going to do with the individuals… whether they can send them. As you have said, there are a couple of tours… so there's an opportunity to look at some players there, so that they can get used to the conditions.

DS: Bangladesh had a good start in this cycle of ICC Test Championship, beating New Zealand in their first game but derailed since. How do you see the team's position in terms of performance in this format?

DH: I think the win against New Zealand was very good. Apart from Glenn Phillips' innings in Dhaka, I believe we could have won that game as well. He played exceptionally well and was the difference between the two teams with the runs he scored in the second innings. Obviously, it was disappointing. We got ourselves into a winning position.

Regarding the Sri Lanka series in March, our focus was on batting for longer periods. Unfortunately, we couldn't achieve that. We failed to bat for over 50 overs in three innings. Our best batting performance was in the second Test, where we managed to bat for that extended period, forcing the opposition to change their approach during the innings. We need to ensure we occupy the crease for as long as possible. That means aiming to bat a minimum of 100 overs and assessing our position at that stage. It's a goal we should all strive for.

Another disappointing aspect of that series was missing a couple of opportunities against the Sri Lankan middle-order. If we had taken those chances, the result might have been different. From a batting perspective, you can't settle for batting just 50 overs in a Test match. We need to bat longer than that, and it's something we all need to focus on.

DS: Regarding our performance in the last T20 World Cup, how do you evaluate everything? People were disappointed after the team missed out on a golden opportunity of reaching the semis. Do you think if the team had shown more courage, they could've finished in the top four?

DH: I'm not sure if the word "courage" is right. We got ourselves into a position with an outside chance of getting to the semifinals. I think before the tournament, if anyone had said we would not only get into the Super Eight but also have an outside chance of reaching the semis, it would have been considered a pretty successful World Cup. I think people will understand the surfaces we played on. Throughout the World Cup in West Indies and the USA, some of the surfaces were challenging. Of course, it was disappointing not to get over the line against Afghanistan when we chased down the total. But it was a very tough challenge on a tricky surface. Ultimately, it was the most successful World Cup, perhaps the best World Cup Bangladesh has ever had. If you step back and say Bangladesh won three matches, lost one game by four runs, and another game by eight runs, then you see we were not far from winning five games of T20 cricket, which would have made for a very rewarding World Cup.

DS: But don't you think the batters should have batted better than what they showcased in the tournament?

DH: At the end of the day, we try to win games of cricket. You take the options that you feel are right at the particular time. What we found was that some of the best players in the world went into the World Cup and didn't perform at all. You have to understand where our batters were in that context and how challenging it was. It's not as simple as saying you can stand and hit through the line and hit balls over the top because some of the surfaces didn't allow us to do that. We are conducive to that type of play. The disappointment is that we know we have good players with high levels of skill, but they didn't show it consistently. That's the most disappointing thing, not the fact that people are looking to win the game. You also understand that T20 cricket is all about managing pressure, and one bad over can cost you the game. So, if you lose two wickets in the space of two overs, the game quickly changes or flips. We bear that in mind. But in terms of the outcome, getting to the Super Eight was the first goal that we achieved, and we weren't very far from getting into the semifinals.

DS: Bangladesh's Test side are quite different from the white-ball teams, although there are some players like Shanto and Liton who play in all three formats. How do you see their preparation for the series?

DH: In terms of preparation, we have some Test players who are in the white-ball squad. But those who aren't in the squad are preparing among themselves. With a couple of practice matches coming up, I think it will give them enough opportunities to prepare for the Test matches.

DS: Can you say something more specific about Shanto and Liton's form? One is the captain, and the other one is also a regular member of the squad.

DH: Obviously, they are having a bit of a break now. They will be participating in those practice games, so they will get the opportunity to get themselves mentally right for the longer version. That's the adjustment you have to make. It's about occupying the crease, making good decisions, and playing and leaving the ball, as there will be no scoreboard pressure. It's all about occupying the crease as long as they can.

Yes, we need bowling pitch which may help BD. On normal pitch, BD will be badly beaten without Tamim and Mushfiq

Last time Bangladesh toured Pakistan, young Naseem Shah got a hat-trick.

Hopefully pitches will be juicy.

Late August September is very humid for Test cricket , players fitness will be tested. The sad part is there will no/sparse crowd. The attritional approach of our players has also not helped it

Captain Shanto, speaking to media representatives at an event, expressed cautious optimism tempered by practical concerns:

"I think it would be better to ask this to the selectors, but from my experience, I don't think he [Rishad] is fully ready for red-ball cricket at the moment," Shanto said.

Reflecting on the coaching efforts behind Rishad's development, Shanto highlighted the pivotal role played by Mushtaq Ahmed, the team's bowling coach, alongside local mentors who have nurtured Rishad's skills over time.

"Definitely, he [Mushtaq] did a fine job with us… But I don't want to give credit only to Mushtaq Ahmed. The local coaches had been looking after Rishad prior to that. Mushtaq Ahmed had played for many years, had won the World Cup and was a coach of a World Cup winning team. He shared his experiences and some tactical aspects with Rishad, which really helped him," he said.

"Local coaches played a big part in helping him with the technical aspects. They motivated him and pointed out his lackings. Local coaches like Sohail Islam and a few others had worked with Rishad," he maintained.

"So, I believe the both the local coaches and Mushtaq deserve credit. Going forward, the BCB will decide which coaching group would be better for us and I believe they always have our best interests in their hearts."

Pakistan should get two big wins.

BD generally do very poorly in Pakistan. Flat pitches of Pakistan don't suit them.

Cricketers to start training in Dhaka on 3 August for Pakistan series

The Dhaka phase of training session for the upcoming Pakistan Test series is set to start on August 3 with more cricketers joining in this phase.

The cricketers who could be in the Test squad have been training in the Chattogram for the last one month while some more cricketers were with HP team in Australia to play four-day matches against Pakistan A team as part of their preparation for the upcoming series.

Four Bangladesh cricketers---Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam and Towhid Hriodty who played the Lankan Premier League (LPL) in Sri Lanka had already returned to the country and would join the training session in Dhaka, a board official said.

Shakib Al Hasan, along with the likes of Rishad Hossain, Mohammad Saifuddin will play Global T20 league in Canada. While Shakib will be a crucial cog in Bangladesh's Test squad, Rishad and Saifuddin are unlikely to be the part of the side's longer version format at this moment. But when Shakib will join the side is yet to be known.

Bangladesh will leave the country for Pakistan in the second week of August with the first Test starting from August 21 in Rawalpindi. Karachi will host the second and final Test from August 30.

After the Test series in Pakistan, Bangladesh will visit India in September for two Tests and three-match T20 series. They are also scheduled to play four more Tests in this year against South Africa and West Indies.

With a long Test schedule coming, the BCB put a comprehensive plan to prepare the players for longer version format. As part of that plan, two-day and four-day matches are being organized regularly before the Test series.

8 Tests for Bangladesh over the next 5 months. That's nice.

As per reports:

Final consultations on the Test squad will take place next week, with the squad's announcement hinging on the return of red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie.

New faces like Mohammad Huraira and Sahibzada Farhan are likely to be included.

Among those facing challenges in retaining their positions are Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Saim Ayub, and Nauman Ali.

Discussions are ongoing regarding Imam-ul-Haq, and decisions about Aamir Jamal and Hasan Ali's inclusion will depend on their fitness assessments.

Faheem has played one Test in the past year which was due to Shaheen being rested anyways. Wasim Jr. last Test match was vs NZ in 2022 and that was also due to many pacers being injured at the time. I don't even consider those two as part of the squads barring injury replacements. Nauman being discarded is good to see though. He's been very old, mediocre and doesn't have whole lot left in the tank.

Not sure who his replacement would be though. Pakistan spin department is completely barren and the one half decent one in Abrar is already on the team.

If two openers are being added to the squad, it would suggest plan is for Shan to continue playing at 3 and have Huraira/Farhan open with Abdullah.

Abdullah/Huraira/Shan/Babar/Saud/Rizwan/Salman/Shaheen/Naseem/Abrar/Khurram (or Jamal/Hasan/Hamza etc) - I guess that is possibly what they'll look to go with?

Dont know why always hassan ali name pops up from nowhere during every series... i dont even remeber when did he played last Test for Pakistan.

As per reports:

Hasan Ali is yet to recover from his elbow pain and his involvement in the Test series against Bangladesh at home is unlikely. He will now undergo full treatment for his elbow injury.

Shakib available for Pakistan Tests

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, currently playing in Global T20 League in Canada, is available for the upcoming two-match Test series in Pakistan, cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus informed the media today.

"He [Shakib] is available [for the Tests]. He has talked with me, the board and also the selectors," Yunus said.
The Global T20 series is slated to end on August 11 while Bangladesh team will depart for Pakistan series on August 17 and it is likely that Shakib would join the team in Pakistan.

"If time is not available, then he will move directly from Dubai to join the side [in Pakistan]. Or else, as he has been told, he will join the side in Dhaka and go through one or two days of practice before departure," the BCB director added.

Shakib has played just four Tests in the last two years, and before any Test series debate rages over whether the all-rounder still wants to continue playing Tests. Bangladesh have played eight Tests during this time. Shakib skipped the lone Test against Afghanistan last year and also the home series against New Zealand due to a finger injury he suffered during the 2023 ODI World Cup. He also missed the first Test against Sri Lanka before returning for the second Test which was played in Chattogram.

Meanwhile, a video of Shakib Al Hasan was also making the rounds on social media since last night where he was heard asking 'What is your contribution for the country?' to a non-resident Bangladeshi during an exchange of words.

"I haven't seen the video, so I can't comment on that. Obviously it was not right [for Shakib] to say that. Everyone has a contribution somewhere. It was not right to ask about Shakib's contribution. From what I have only heard since I have not seen it, if a question was raised about Shakib's contribution, we all know what Shakib's contribution is to Bangladesh cricket. It's a personal matter for Shakib. I can't say what he said out there but from what I have heard, Shakib's contribution was questioned," Yunus said.

Pakistan team is not exactly in great shape. I still expect them to beat Bangladesh. Bangladeshbis still in their minnow status against Pakistan.

Not sure where this is coming from it will be a close fight with a draw over all i think. we are in extreme poor form at the moment

This could get close.
Can Bangladeshi posters give a status update on their cricket team’s situation.

The lack of quality and intensity gets on my nerves. I don’t even follow IPL as it’s not real cricket just like Bangladesh vs Pakistan.

I agree with you IPL is not real cricket. I also don't watch it. IPL and BCCI have corrupted ICC and game of cricket.

Bangladesh vs Pakistan is real cricket as per ICC (international status).

Watching Bangladesh vs Pakistan especially in tests is a bit like watching women's cricket. I know it's cricket and should be respected to an extent but the level of cricket is so below what I would consider 'quality cricket' that I can only follow on CI or a forum like this one. If someone says something fun happened, I might try to catch highlights.

Agreed.
Happy for these teams being able to earn their bread through cricket.

But let’s not get carried away and call it real top tier international cricket because it’s not.

'Very much concerned about the security': BCB asks government to provide security consultant for upcoming Pakistan tour

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) authorities said that they have asked the government to give them a security consultant for their upcoming tour of Pakistan. Bangladesh, who will be going to Pakistan on August 17, is set to play a two-match Test series, which is essential for the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle. The matches will be played at Rawalpindi (21-25 August) and Karachi (30 August-3 September). Because of Pakistan's political situation and past history, visiting it for the international teams has always been considered a matter of risk.

"Look providing safety is up to them (Pakistan) and we go there because they assure us to provide state-level security and after they assured us about it, the tour was fixed. I guess you have seen in the Asia Cup that the Bangladesh team traveled to Pakistan and they provided us state-level security and we agreed to go on this tour because they ensured us of that. You might have seen in recent times that some international teams have also visited [Pakistan] and they are quite happy with the security they provided," BCB cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus told reporters on Wednesday.

"We are also very much concerned about the security but after knowing everything and after getting assurance from them regarding the security we have fixed the tour. At the same time we have requested the government to give us a security consultant during the tour who will maintain communication with them at all times regarding the security issues," he added.

Jalal added that no player had raised any sort of objection or issue with visiting Pakistan for the upcoming tour. The Bangladesh A team will play three 50-over matches and two four-day games in Islamabad before the two-match Test series against Pakistan. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul Haque alongside a few other Test cricketers were incorporated for the initial four-day game as the travelers believe it to be important for their preparations for the Test series considering they are not scheduled to play any training game in front of the Test in the wake of showing up there on August 17.

As per media reports:

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) responded to Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) security consultant request for a tour of Pakistan later this month

A spokesperson for the PCB has clarified that the inclusion of a security consultant in the team management for the upcoming Test tour is at the discretion of the BCB. The spokesperson noted that security managers or consultants are now considered part of the player support personnel, a common practice in international cricket.

The PCB has not received any security concerns from the BCB, despite sharing the security plan and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last month. The spokesperson emphasized that the PCB follows international norms and protocols to ensure the safety and security of visiting teams.

Flat pitches don't suit BD and BD are generally at their worst in Test format.
BD is in mostly worst in just about every format most of the time. There was time when they were moderately good in ODI and now again trending backtoward mean. And their mean means being worse.

regarding this tour, Pak should win convincingly. Pak is the second best team in test format in Asia and SL is third best but there is a considerable gap in skills between Pak and SL. BD is not even in the same league. They are a bit better in AFG on good days or in Mirpur, otherwise can be grouped together in the same league with AFG. If Pak somehow manages to lose to BD, who are proper minnows, in a home tour, Pak needs to completely purge their tour. I am mostly sure they will comfortably win against BD

Strange from BCB. Why would you be concerned about security?

Pakistan is safer than BD at the moment. BD is going through political and civil unrest.

Anyway, good to see players having no issue.

Anything other than a 2-0 spanking to BCB tigers should be unacceptable.

Just trying to be important , pathetic . Such a low profile team , no one will even notice they are touring Pakistan.

Bangladesh is also having security concerns LOL. What a joke. WHo are they afraid of??

Bangladesh itself is in a mess atm. It is better for them to run here in such situation.

Remember it is just the board (a board that is unofficially run by Awami League; a very pro-India party) which was having a concern. Not the players.

If I were a cricketer, I would even play in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Kabul without any security arrangement. I don't think Muslim players have to worry about these.

During an interview with local sports media outlet, Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has shared his insights and concerns regarding the Pakistan cricket team's preparations for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh and England:

"There are no assurances in Pakistan cricket. You have to take those calculated risks. There is always an element of risk before big achievements arise."

"Pakistan has medium pacers; we don’t have genuine pace. We can probably go with green pitches against England. But when you prepare green pitches, your batters start feeling the tension. When you make spin-friendly pitches, you start worrying about England’s spinners. There is some sort of skill set that will help you win these Test games. Produce pitches where bowlers and batsmen have an equal chance."

Are you being funny? Just look at the TTP thread or the new Military Operation thread. Hundreds of Pakistani Muslims are dying from terrorism in Pakistan everyday. Why would Bangladeshi Muslims be safe? Obviously the Bangladeshi team is not going to travel without near presidential level security. Yes they're used to certain level of violence at home but terrorism is a wholly different ballgame. Pakistan has more terrorist incidents in a year than Bangladesh has a decade. The Bangladesh Cricket board has a duty to it's player to properly investigate and establish safety.

If Bangladesh play with some pride they might win.

What about the muslims in india that are dying or in the Indian side of Kashmir

Of course Bangladesh should be concerned when touring India as well and ask the right questions about the security arrangements. India has had more terrorist incidents than Bangladesh which is a pretty peaceful country from that perspective. They would be right to be cautious.

As per reports:

Prominent Pakistan players likely to represent Shaheens in four-day series against Bangladesh-A

The first four-day match against Bangladesh A will take place at Islamabad Club from August 10 to 13

This initiative aims to provide these players with valuable practice before the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh ths month.

If Bangladesh play with some pride they might win.
Pride is not something they are known for. Now if you want them to play with false pride, arrogance, entitlement, high ego, they are the right team. Mind you the results will be same unless the opposition gifts them some matches.

As per reports:

Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed, who last played a Test match in June 2023, has been struggling with a shoulder injury that has kept him out of action in the red-ball format. Despite being available for selection, Taskin has not featured in the playing XI due to his inability to bowl longer spells.

However, ahead of the upcoming away series against Pakistan, Taskin has commenced training with the Bangladesh team. After the first day's session, BCB physio Bayjedul Islam Khan confirmed that Taskin is managing his injury and advised him to continue with his rehabilitation program and focus on his workouts.

As per his physio, Taskin has played in the T20 format recently, so he did not bowl for long spells during this period. He had a shoulder issue, which he even got rechecked during the T20 World Cup. The thing is, the damage he had at that time is exactly the same now, as it has not aggravated. A player can play by managing these types of injuries. If he continues his rehabilitation and the workouts, Taskin can survive. Based on that, Taskin is definitely available. But as for bowling workload in Tests, where you need to bowl longer spells, a player needs to get up to that speed. So, he will try to do that, and if he feels better, then he can definitely play in Tests.

Tigers' training session postponed for consecutive days

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on Sunday that they have postponed the pre-series training session on 5 August due to unavoidable reasons.

Bangladesh’s Test preparation for the upcoming two-match series against Pakistan received a blow as their scheduled skill training sessions are getting disrupted due to ongoing political crisis.

Earlier, the BCB cancelled their scheduled practice session at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday after beginning their preparation by completing a fitness test on 3 August.

“The scheduled pre-series training for the National Team players on Monday, 05 August, at the SBNCS, Mirpur has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances,” the BCB said in a statement.

It is understood that board officials are not sure when they can announce the date of the next practice session ahead of the Pakistan tour where they are slated to play two Test matches which is part of the ICC Test Championship 2023-25 cycle hours after the government announced a nationwide curfew for an indefinite period.

Tigers are scheduled to fly to Pakistan on 17 August while the first Test of the series is slated to take place from 21-25 August in Rawalpindi. Karachi will host the second Test from 30 August-3 September.

Bangladesh currently don't have the environment for training sessions. Massive civil/political unrest is going on.

Bangladesh should come to Pakistan early and train there maybe.

As per reports:

PCB has announced plans to conduct fitness tests of Pakistan cricketers ahead of the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.

The Test squad players are expected to be summoned on August 9, with the fitness tests scheduled for August 10. However, some players may undergo their fitness assessments earlier, depending on availability.

Centrally contracted players who are available will also be called for fitness tests.

National cricketers will undergo five to six different fitness tests, with their fitness levels being assessed according to international standards.

As per media reports:

Jason Gillespie, the head coach of Pakistan’s red-ball cricket team, has arrived in Islamabad from Australia to gear up for the Shaheens’ forthcoming matches against Bangladesh A.

Gillespie may meet with former captain Waqar Younis, who recently took on the role of adviser for cricket affairs to the PCB chief. Their discussion will focus on the squad and preparations for the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

In addition to his head coach duties, Gillespie will oversee the preparations for the Pakistan Shaheens’ matches against Bangladesh A, including attending their training camp.

Bangladesh should prepare to play out atleast 90-100 overs which will get them around 275-300 runs. I don't understand why they don't click in test cricket even after beating New Zealand in New Zealand a couple of years back.

PCB statement

The BCB has confirmed to the PCB their men's "A" cricket team's departure for Islamabad has been delayed by 48 hours due to unforeseen circumstances. The BCB and PCB have been in regular contact for the past two days and will continue to work together on the revised tour itinerary with further details to follow in due course. The Bangladesh "A" cricket team was due to arrive in Islamabad in the wee hours of Wednesday for two four-day and three 50-over matches from 10-27 August.

Bangladesh Tour To Pakistan In Doubt, PCB Offer To Fly Out Players

The Bangladesh Cricket Board delayed the arrival of their A side to Pakistan by 48 hours, casting a big doubt on the series between the two nations.

Bangladesh senior men's team two-Test away series against Pakistan starting August 21 in Rawalpindi looks doubtful due to the current civil unrest in the country after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign and flee the country. Bangladesh's senior team are supposed to play two Tests in Rawalpindi (August 21-25) and Karachi (Aug 30-Sep 3) but in current scenario, it might be difficult for national team to travel for a serious. Even Bangladesh A team's shadow tour has been rendered doubtful Former Test skipper Mominul Haque was supposed to play for Bangladesh A in that series vs Pakistan Shaheens (A).

A PCB source aware of the developments informed that the PCB had even made an offer to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to fly out their Test side to Rawalpindi at the earliest in order to ensure that the series is on.

"The PCB has even offered to host their players for the extra days and provide them with all training facilities in Rawalpindi ahead of the Test matches but they have not responded as yet,” he said.

The BCB, on Monday, delayed the arrival of their A side to Pakistan by 48 hours which has cast a big doubt on the series between senior men's teams from both countries.

Reports about homes of some senior players being attacked by mobs have also deepened the crisis since the A team was due to reach Pakistan tomorrow while the Test squad was due to touch base on August 17.

Utter nonsense. Its not as if there are no flights in and out of Bangladesh.

I hope the tour goes ahead as planned. It is in Pakistan so as long as the players can fly out it should be fine.

It will be very difficult as nobody know where is Shakib right now .

Shakib is a MP of awami league party .

As per reports, Shahriar Nafees, the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) in-charge of cricket operations, announced that the board will be reaching out to all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in the coming days.

Bangladesh Squad Announced for Tour of Pakistan 2024

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announces the squad for the Tour of Pakistan. The Bangladesh team will leave for Pakistan tomorrow (Monday, 12 August) for two ICC World Test Championship matches in Rawalpindi and Karachi. The first Test begins on 21 August while the second match starts on 30 August. The squad will assemble in Lahore and will train at the Gaddafi Stadium from 14-16 August before traveling to Islamabad on 17 August for the first Test:

SQUAD

Najmul Hossain Shanto (Captain), Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Zakir Hasan, Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Kumer Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Nahid Rana, Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Taskin Ahmed, Syed Khaled Ahmed

Gazi Ashraf Hossain, Chairman National Selection Panel

“The emphasis was on picking our best players for this version. This is a well balanced squad. The likes of Mushfiqur (Rahim), Mominul (Haque) and Shakib (Al Hasan) have played 216 matches combined and there is no substitute for that kind of experience. Taijul (Islam) and Miraz (Mehidy Hasan) have been leading the spin department for a long time and have over 350 wickets between them. We also expect Shanto (Najmul Hossain), Litton (Kumer Das) and the other batsmen to step up because to be competitive against Pakistan, we will need a team effort.”

“We have selected five pacers mindful of the fact that Taskin Ahmed will only play the second Test. He hasn’t bowled in a Test since June last year and we have decided to include him in the A Team for the second four-dayer against Pakistan A to get him into the rhythm for longer version matches. Also, a couple of the pacers may join the A Team for the one-day matches and therefore we needed backups. Our attack has variety with bowlers who can bowl fast and also swing the ball and I am really looking forward to seeing them perform against world class batsmen.”

“Pakistan are very tough opponents, especially in their home front and it will be a challenging tour for us. It is good that we will get additional time to prepare in Lahore. Also, some players who are in Pakistan already with the Bangladesh A side, will join the national team for the Test series. Their experience of the conditions should come in handy.”

Bangladesh name strong pace attack for Pakistan Tests

Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead a strong Bangladesh squad in their ICC World Test Championship series against Pakistan.
Bangladesh have named a 16-member squad in the ICC World Test Championship series against Pakistan later this month.

The squad will be led by Najmul Hossain Shanto with a strong five-man pace attack named for the series. While the pace bowling unit has a wealth of experience, it will be without Taskin Ahmed for the first Test with the fast bowler as he hasn’t bowled in a Test match since June last year.

“We have selected five pacers mindful of the fact that Taskin Ahmed will only play the second Test," Gazi Ashraf Hossain, Chairman National Selection Panel, said.

"He hasn’t bowled in a Test since June last year and we have decided to include him in the A Team for the second four-dayer against Pakistan A to get him into the rhythm for longer version matches."

Pakistan and Bangladesh have played six Test series so far with Bangladesh yet to win a Test match against the Asian opponents.

They managed to draw only one of the 13 Test matches between these teams.

“The emphasis was on picking our best players for this version," Hossain said.

"This is a well-balanced squad. The likes of Mushfiqur (Rahim), Mominul (Haque) and Shakib (Al Hasan) have played 216 matches combined and there is no substitute for that kind of experience."

"Taijul (Islam) and Miraz (Mehidy Hasan) have been leading the spin department for a long time and have over 350 wickets between them. We also expect Shanto (Najmul Hossain), Litton (Kumar Das) and the other batsmen to step up because to be competitive against Pakistan, we will need a team effort.”

The first Test begins on 21 August while the second match starts on 30 August.

Strong pace attack is unlikely to do much on flat Pakistani pitches. I hope they will not get injured by toiling hard.

Batters will probably have to do the real hard work.

why using yellow ball for red ball series training?

on the ball point, i seriously think we should stop using Kookarbura for home red ball, its really not suited for flat sub continent pitches, we should consider going with SG or Duke or a home-made SG alternative. should provide better help for spin and reverse swing i feel.

Update:

The Bangladesh cricket team has arrived in Lahore for a two-match Test series.

Bangladesh will practice at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on August 14, 15, and 16.

PCB statement on spectators’ attendance in Karachi Test

Karachi, 14 August 2024:

In light of ongoing construction work at the National Bank Stadium as part of preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made the difficult decision to hold the second Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh, scheduled from 30 August to 3 September, without spectators in attendance.

“We understand the vital role that our passionate spectators play in cricket, providing inspiration and motivation to our players. However, the health and safety of our fans is our utmost priority. After careful consideration of all available options, we have decided that the safest course of action is to hold the second Test in front of an empty stadium.

“As a result of this decision, ticket sales have been suspended with immediate effect. Fans who have already purchased tickets will receive a full refund automatically, with the amount credited to the account details provided at the time of purchase.

“While we deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause, we want to assure our valued fans that the ongoing stadium upgrades are aimed at enhancing their experience. The renovations are part of our commitment to making the venue more spectator-friendly and preparing it for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be the first ICC event hosted in Pakistan since 1996.”
