Bollywood Corner

Ranbir to be the best Bollywood actor ever . The guy is so versatile at such a young age .

its got an excellent concept, very emotional and touching to say the least.

Barfi has become a kulfi after the allegations of piracy of an English movie.

saw 20 minutes of it before shutting it off or my head would explode.

the inane overacting in most bollywood movies makes them intolerable to me.

Dude, what you talking about, the acting was pretty good. I doubt you will get many here to agree with your opinion

pretty overrated . indians always have a problem doing movies about disabilities, always have a tendency to overdo the maudlin and the mawkishness was just cringeworthy. as good as ranbir it, it was impossible to sit for 2 and a half hours, watching him do the same expressions. it got old after a while. the main flaw was the script ,although the cinematography was good.

Only song I liked in the movie other than Disco Diwaane. That "Radha Teri Chunari" phrase is very catchy....typical boring Karan Johar picturization though. I have a strong feeling the movie will not work at Box office...sick of Karan Johar acting like he is gem of director and dissing real directors like Ram Gopal Varma or Sanjay Leela Bhansaali at every chance...deserves a flop :D...Of the 3 debutants..Varun Dhawan looks like will have a future...Alia Bhatt..may be the bhatt camp will save here..not promising both Alia and Sidharth!!

Looks Like Rani Mukherjee has gone the Vidya Balan way with Anurag Kashyap's production... Aiyya......Theatrical Trailer gave a feeling it is a family movie...Apparently not...it is a funny take on Melodramatic Marathi women who is ready for "Arranged" marriage...and has feelings for men with good smell.....Out of the three song promos released so far...Two of them are adult..and lyrics in Dreamum Wekkapum are too much...I am sure it will be a good movie...with Anurag Involved..raani is a great actress as well....was brilliant in her last film "No One killed Jessica"....very nice belly dancing in aga Bhai song....

Anurag Kashayp's production gives India its first Food film....Directed by Sameer Sharma -- Screen play writer of Swadesh....starring Kunal Kapoor and Huma Qureshi ...Anurag is a blessing to bollywood..both his productions and directorials are different and entertaining...

Who and where do yall look for movie ratings. I go to indiafm.com but the guy on there is a lying sob. He probably gets paid to write good review of stupid movies. I dont watch indian movies at all (very few) and want to make sure the one I am going to watch is actually good. Where do yall go for indian movie reviews which are actually legit.

Two Reviewers I Trust...Rajeev Masand of CNN IBN, Anupama Chopra of NDTV...some times she writes in hindustan times too..and Nikhat Kazmi times of India/Rajasen from Rediff/India today/Mumbai Mirror are all decent...I just read all of them and see.....most importantly facebook status of my friends

.Indiafm(Bollywoodhungama) ..Taran Adarsh is the last person you should trust....I keep telling this here..but...consider this..the guy gave 1.5 to Swades and I think 1 or 1.5 to Rang De basanti...and he gives 4 to all masala crap.

Yup thats the culprit and thats his crime. Which website would you recommend? Anything like indiafm but actually legit?

I like indicine.com

They have their own reviews, which are pretty accurate and fair. And plus they also publish the reviews of other top sites on their website, so everyone can read what every reviewer is reading.

Plus they have news on everything else Bollywood.

Bollywood needs to redefine masala movies, better concentrate on giving quality entertainment rather than crap like Rowdy Rathore, Singam and tons of other southern remakes

For reviewers...I said it in my previous post...

for legit information, interviews India fm (Bollywoodhungama) is very good site....second to none..just do not trust the reviwes...

And for everyday news, candid pics..and stuff like that pinkvilla.com is very good...and our mainstream media does a very good job covering bollywood anyway....I mean even ranbir kapoor's birthday bash pics are present in main news sites :D

And Bussinessofcinema and its youtube channel is a very good for news too.....It is a official website too like indiafam....has good box office updates..and stuff...best after indiafm

http://businessofcinema.com/

http://www.youtube.com/user/businessofcinema?feature=results_main

and Website of Television channel utvstars...(complete television channel dedicated to celebs and stuff )...owned UTVmotionpictures...so also a legit site...

http://www.utvstars.com/ or its youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/utvgroup

all these sites have daily updates..and then zoom and events and stuff...these are the sites on top of my head..will add if I remember any...

He is a crappy reviewer...

Cant even give any good reasons for why he rates those movies so high...

He just feels the power in it lol :))

The only Bollywood actor I adore is Aamir Khan. He's awesome and the rest(most) are there for their supposed good looks which never existed.

Barfi has crossed 100 crore mark in 10 days world wide....

Ranbir Kapoor I think has entered big league with the likes of Aamir,Shahrukh,Salman,Akshay,Ajay Devgn and Hrithik...ofcourse not completely..but has

left oldies like Saif Ali Khan,Sanjay dutt(barring munna bhai series)....and his age group actors Shahid Kapoor, Imran Khan, abhishek bacchan way behind....

Hardly, 3 khans are on another level. ETT passed 200 cr in India and WW close to 275 crore.

The Thing is Anurag Basu has been saying that through out the promotion that they are inspired by charlie chaplin and have used a few of them in montages ...

These sequences are not even 4 minutes of the whole movie...they are very small scenes.....and please do not tell me that ladder scene is the first time you have scene it....or that door scene...

or even the notebook scene...many scenes in previous bollywood films go across the same line....

According to my friend..a few small scenes are in public domain..

I think people are just looking everything so microscopically ..even at 20 second scenes...it is almost impossible to not have any similiary to any movie ...especially when we have to compete with an industry which has a head start by hundred years and more budget....

I have a problem if they borrow storylines....or long creative sequences....or most importantly Music....but action sequences/or small thing like this is no big deal...everything we attempt now it terms of action sequences ....willl already be done by hollywood in one movie or the other....because we learn from them.....that does not mean recreating those action sequences with lesser budget does not take effort or it is a copy....

True...but I think Ranbir has taken his first step into big league..leaving others behind

Of Course Ajay Devgan is awesome aswell.

Really loved Singham.

total BS, thats why bollywood would always be considered an industry of chors, he copied exact scenes from other films, totally lost respect for this man, he is as bad as the others. not to mention pritam the chor also copied the music of one of the songs from the movie.

as long as people keep apologising for stuff like this , bollywood will keep on plagiarizing without giving attribution to the original sources.

You are basically concentrating on the 5 minutes of the whole movie spaced apart..and Anurag Basu has said himself many times that he has used charlie chaplin the movie for a few scenes...that door scene was it...3 seconds??? seriously....People are really looking at very microscopic...not me..Even Anurag Basu has agreed that he has used it...what about the remaining 2 hr 25 minutes of the movie....the cinematogtaphy..and lol at that deaf man and his father death scene...everybody would have thought that would have happened.....

And about the million other montages in the movie that are original.....and about the song....it is not that similar...pritham has copied heck a lot songs from the previous films of his...but this album and songs are original......and even this amelia one looks only a little similar..

No..I am not apologizing...I am against plaigarism completely...what I am saying there is a fine line between inspired....copied..and paying tributes...Anurag said previously that they have paid tribute to silent movie era...and used some scenes.....and those scenes are basically...3/4 minutes of the movie....

I could give a rat's behind if it is 5 mts or 50 mts, it reveals a bankrupcy of original ideas, to steal actual scenes from other movies and pass it off as your own. There is a difference being inspired and blatantly lifting scenes
Atleast this hack got shown up for all the "inspiration" he got from watching foriegn films. But then this is the man who made crap like kites, so it is not surprising that his latest effort also smells rotten.

^^^ Let us agree to disagree than. You can look at 4 minutes of the movie where he himself agreed has used silent films of the 50's and say backruptcy of ideas...while I can easily look at his other 2 hr 25 min of the main part.I personally think backruptcy of ideas is what Pritham does or many story lines lifted......but not this..anyway....let us agree to disagree...!!!

Mean while..A R Rahman's Musical....Jab tak Hain Jaan song promo released..as usual will probably take a couple of listenings to get used to like any Rahman song...SRK looks old..and like it is Yash Chopra's last film...hopefully SRK's last as a bollywood romantic hero too...Guitar strings are nice..

^^ actually its not 4 minutes, practically every scene in barfi is lifted from another movie. the scandal has even made it to the official wiki page of barfi . to think that this movie is an official indian entry to oscars is a disgrace. the americans are going to have a good laugh at bollywood before kicking it to the curb.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barfi!

Controversy

Barfi was criticized by several viewers on social networking websites, such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube for copying scenes from several movies including Charlie Chaplin's movies. Some movies the scenes were allegedly copied from are Singin' in the Rain, Kikujiro, Benny & Joon, Korean film Oasis, Lovers' Concerto, Chaplin's The Adventurer, City Lights, Mr Bean's Holiday, Jackie Chan's Project A, Buster Keaton's Cops, The Notebook, Tommy Boy, Mr. Nobody, Black Cat, White Cat, The Goonies and Fried Green Tomatoes. The makers of the film defended the copying as a form of inspiration. However, it was alleged that the makers of the movie made no attempts to credit the original sources for the scenes. They were also heavily criticized for reproducing the same scenes rather than taking "inspiration" for the theme. A few days after the release, several videos were uploaded on YouTube showing side by side comparisons of the copied scenes. Additionally, it was also revealed that the background score for the movie, composed by Pritam, was borrowed from the highly acclaimed soundtrack of the French film Amélie.[34]

This is a cool song. Hopefully this movie is legit good and not just rated high because Shahrukh is in it. plus, it has A. R. Rehman's music apparently. It is just me or does shahrukh look kinda weird/odd..maybe getting too old? Who knows..

Actually, Not even me ...Anurag Basu also is not denying it. It is a trend in India these days to pull down any different effort by picking up scenes from french, german, hollywood, koean, iranian, combodian movies..pick a 3 second scene and copy.

1. Notebook scene--- i am sure I have seen a gazillion movies in south and bollywood where a father or a mother says they have made a wise decision by marrying a person with money than they love...

on top of my head -- A Tamil movie called Boys ..where Sidharth's father and Genelia's father meet.....Now please do not say that scene was a copy....I can easily remember a lot of scenes before 2004...in the same tone....

2. Deaf man in the house....how many times have we seen a sad incident being unnoticed by somebody being disabled....and is that even a original thought... I mean that is common sense...no??

3. That kicking due to sliding door--- How many gazllion fights we have seen in the 90's bollywood or south India with a same scene....even that is common sense...I am sure even charlie chaplin did not think much about the scene. People who says it is a copy are nuts...

4. That ladder....I have no idea about you....I have seen a 1960's NT Ramaroa movie in Telugu with the exact same scene....even that I do not consider a copy at all by any means..however inspired..fine...it is not too brilliant a creative thought either...many a times I have seen movies where balance on a ladder is important part of the fight...

And even that pins on the road scene...I can name easily billion movies which have something or the other on the road planted to stop a car....even that I do not think needs so much attention...

even the nose scene...I can remember a Telugu chiranjeevi movie back in the day in a song where his nose twists after hitting it...even that is no big deal...but twisting of the nose and mouth can be said as a copy if people want to..

only the puppet scene for me is really used ...and that statue scene..but ever since the movie started basu has been screaming that they have used chaplin...

Even that pritham's supposed copy is an inspiration.....it is only a little similar because of the used instruments...

I could actually go on...I am not denying the inspiration...even basu is not ...but psuedo intelligents who cling on very very minute aspects of the movie just to sound intelligent and have watched foriegn cinema irks me....and basiclaly ignore the whole effing movie and discrediting for characters..the characterization...screenplay..cinematography just because they found a 3 minute worth of material sprikled around throgh out the movie....is ridiculous!!Actually none of the said copies are really any great thoughts...some could be a mere coincidence.

And even more ridiculous is the death scene in barfi...saying it is copied from notebook....In a parody song in a telugu movie called Malleswari...starring Venkatesh and Katrina Kaif....which released in 2004 Feb(Notebook released in 2004 June) ...at the end of the song..as soon as Actress in the song dies...Venkatesh also dies....come back to me when people scream that the death scene in the notebook is a copy from malleswari....

Absolute nuts are psuedo intelligents and this column writers/bloggers....!!!!

and I have seen so many movies in bollywood over the years where couple die one of the after the other..

for example...classic devdas....Where Parvathi dies hitting the door as soon as she hears the news...

And then so many old movies where on partner died as soon as he hears the other die...either by heart attack....or for some reason....

You hardly see an original movie which has not been inspired by other works.

Saying that Barfi is a copy is just

Inspiration is needed to make a movie.

^^^

Exactly....

Quinten Tarantino's famous use of cartoons in Kill Bill 2003..

Kamal Hassan used it in his movie Alavandhan(Abhay in Hindi in 2001)

and infact Quentin Tarantino himself said that he has "inspired " by kamal hassan....nobody will dare it to call it a Copy!!!! even though the original thought of using toons is basically a lift...

basically using a few small ideas and minute things should end at being called an inspiration...the problem should with the blatant lift of storylines...or music...

Son of Sardar "Raja Rani" Song. It is catchy..

Jab Tak Hain Jaan and Son of Sardar to release on the same day......Usually very rare for two huge stars to release on a same day. Both will loose a very considerable portion....

Son of Sardar is a Telugu remake..has a very interesting story line " A Very timid person (ajay) enters a house as a guest...but the owners (Sunjay dutt) of the house realizes that AJay is son of their enemy...but they have a rule that they do not kill people inside their house...but will only after they step out of the house...while Ajay Learns that there are his enemies and their rule....comedy/movie starts when Ajay does his best to not leave the house...while owners keep trying to take him out" Telugu one was a very funny movie...done in a very real way too.....but I think bollywood has picturized in a very over the top way ..with slapstick comedy...and colorfull sets...sadly!!

nope it is NOT inspiration when you copy scenes from another movie, it is creative bankrupcy of the highest order, it is stealing

just because you have no clue about world cinema does not make it all right for a hack of a director to steal direct scenes( atleast 10 full scenes- makes it about 40 mts of screen time). Your definition of stealing is designed to absolve mr chor anurag basu from not having a single original creative idea in his head. and way to be insecure about not knowing anything about world cinema, no wonder viewers like you were fooled by the master of plagiarism to the point that now you have to be superdefensive about something indefensible because you were made to look foolish .

the scenes he stole:
1) turning back the clock
2) throwing up the shoe
3) sitting under a statue
4) nail and car tyre
5)mother showing daughter her ex lover
6) barfi looking at newspaper on another man's lap
7) barfi painting
8)ladder scene
9) barfi with dummy scene
10) deathbed scene

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8X4AZnTEZDU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK87fZeie0E&feature=related

and this is how the masterpiece was recieved in the US

i would not hold my breath for the oscar ..just sayin

Again you keep harping the same thing...it is ridiculous!!! please stop saying that you have knowledge on foriegn cinema after watchin 1 minute clips afteer tanqeed.com compiled it for you and act like you know cinema....if anything I can bet my life that I have seen more cinema than you in all languages...so come of your high horse of "foriegn cinema watcher and plaigarizing accuser"....

1) turning back the clock --- right....once again...how many effing times have we seen a movie in which one actor or the other asks and say lets be like before as friends in many other symbolic ways...so turning back the clock is one of them..and random korean movie used it..and anurag used it...now what??? It is not one of the greatest scenes..it did not add anything to the movie either....
2) throwing up the shoe --- right...what was that again 5 seconds...what did that scene add to the movie for eff sake...in the original the shoe is used only a symbol...and I do not think it was used in the end with sense of despiration...
3) sitting under a statue -- Yes, it was 20 second scene which anurag said they used it...
4) nail and car tyre -- again....this was not first time you saw somebody block a road with pin...for eff sake ever saw how police stops car in a chace they know the car they are looking for is going arrive...
5)mother showing daughter her ex lover -- Once again, stop saying that ...it is hurting my ear again --- explained before in the previous post...

6) barfi looking at newspaper on another man's lap --- same explanation as below...
7) barfi painting -- seriously!! is this first time in cinema you have seen director use a camer angle to fool the audience.....
8)ladder scene -- I have explain before...definately inspired like anurag himself said....
9) barfi with dummy scene --- Yes...
10) deathbed scene --- As said please stop saying notebook was the first movie where a partner dies as soon as the other dies...please...I might die....

So...please....I do not care what LA times says...may be you need an oscar..or a LA times approval or some random blog that picks 20 seconds scenes and finds similarities from gazillion countries and gazlion movies..so that psuedo intelligents can share it on facebook..or an a forum..and act intelligent..and all that nonsense. I do not..so..please!!!

We watch bollywood masala, same old romantic nonsense!!!....and google what tarantino had to say about inspiring. has a golden quote !!

and anyway ..can we stop this nonse. I agree you watch all the foriegn cinema..and are super intelligence...great person that cannot tolerate random 20 seconds matching with other scenes from million other movies..even if the director screamed from the beggining that he is inspired from chaplin/bean.

and no sir, I will not loose anything if I agree this is plagiarism.....I am defending because I believe in what I say......and lol @...I have been fooled..sorry may because i do not watch foriegn cinema like you do daily?? or browse youtube or follow tanqeed :D

Lol.....in that video they even added paper with glue sticking to beans finger as copy....are you kiddin me...how many movies have we seen paper with glue stick to people's finger..or two fingers sticking to each other....Joke of a list!!!

I just read an article that total scenes add up to 4 min 15 seconds of the movie...some even 4 second scenes...I actually remember kicking my brother like chaplin did...I guess I copied too..otherwise it is too original an idea to kick like that??

and that deaf ...father death scene.....how hard is it to imagine!!!

I personally think people are making a very big deal about absolute nothing here....biggest of the movies have great inspirations...and with so many movies made....some scenes will be similar......and especially when the director himself has been telling from beggining that they have used some chaplin and bean.....consider that 10 -15 second scenes homages....that door kicking scene..does not add anything to the movie....but people who knew chaplin will remmeber him once again...it is not effing storyline or anything...it is man kicking another man.....that notebook scenes..even south indian movies had them way before 2004 !!!

anyway....lets not drag this anymore....I think I understand where we stand...I can bare a few 10 -20 second scenes which are similar in a 3 hr movie..and you cannot.

In movie clips normally I look elsewhere but when it is Sonakshi Sinha I cant take my eyes off her forehead..

1) turning back the clock --- right....once again...how many effing times have we seen a movie in which one actor or the other asks and say lets be like before as friends in many other symbolic ways...so turning back the clock is one of them..and random korean movie used it..and anurag used it...now what??? It is not one of the greatest scenes..it did not add anything to the movie either...

FILMMAKING IS ABOUT THE DIRECTOR COMING UP WITH HIS OWN WAY OF EXPRESSING THE SAME EMOTION,CHOR BASU STOLE THE EXACT 5 MINUTE SCENE AND HOW IT WAS SHOT.

.
2) throwing up the shoe --- right...what was that again 5 seconds...what did that scene add to the movie for eff sake...in the original the shoe is used only a symbol...and I do not think it was used in the end with sense of despiration...

THIS WAS SUPPOSEDLEY THE MOST POIGNANT MOMENT OF THE MOVIE, AGAIN CHOR STOLE IT FROM ANOTHER MOVIE.

3) sitting under a statue -- Yes, it was 20 second scene which anurag said they used it...WHICH MAKES IT RIGHT IF HE ADMITS COPYING
4) nail and car tyre -- again....this was not first time you saw somebody block a road with pin...for eff sake ever saw how police stops car in a chace they know the car they are looking for is going arrive...

NO IT IS HOW THE SHOTS WERE COPIED EXACTLY WHICH IS WHAT PEOPLE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH.

5)mother showing daughter her ex lover -- Once again, stop saying that ...it is hurting my ear again --- explained before in the previous post...

AGAIN YOU DO NO COPY A SCENE SHOT TO SHOT

6) barfi looking at newspaper on another man's lap --- same explanation as below...AGAIN YOU DO NO COPY A SCENE SHOT TO SHOT
7) barfi painting -- seriously!! is this first time in cinema you have seen director use a camer angle to fool the audience.....
AGAIN YOU DO NO COPY A SCENE SHOT TO SHOT
8)ladder scene -- I have explain before...definately inspired like anurag himself said....
9) barfi with dummy scene --- Yes...
10) deathbed scene --- As said please stop saying notebook was the first movie where a partner dies as soon as the other dies...please...I might die....AGREE THIS ONE I COULD ACCEPT BUT AGAIN DONT USE THE SAME EFFIN SHOTS! CAN'T BE EVEN A LITTLE ORIGINAL?

so yes lets not drag it out. i can stand inspirations but not exact shot copies, it is the worst form of film making and there is no excuse for it. looks like basu went through his foriegn movies DVD collection and clobbered together a movie with bits and peices from them. and this is what the critics in india were bowled over by :) , they have been exposed to be the the dumbest creatures alive, what a fool basu made of them. and then he is defending his plagiarism, thats called ek to chori uper se seena jori!

Telugu BlockBuster this year " Eega"....one of the biggest hits in the country this year...This movie has collected 130 crores so far in Telugu(original) + Tamil(Dubbed) ...and the price sold for in Hindi(Reliance Entertainment brought it)....Cost of the movie was just 30 crores!!....movie(Dubbed) is releasing in Hindi now on October 12th..Expected to start decently...

Looks like The Legendary Sridevi has absolutely Nailed it.....Fantastic reviews and word of mouth through out the nation......with the word of mouth generated on first day...analysts say it is going to collect 60 + crores at least...

Some Reviews..

Rajeev Masand --- 3.5/ 5 --- I do not even remember the last time he gave a 3.5 !!!

The actress is effortlessly charming as the neglected protagonist who discovers herself when she's allowed to fly. She infuses the part with the right portions of vulnerability, restraint, and quiet strength, delivering a performance that is nothing short of perfect.

I'm going with three-and-a-half out of five for 'English Vinglish'. It's warm and fuzzy, and leaves you with a big smile on your face.

Zee News --- 4/5 -- Stunning Sridevi is Baaack !!

Sridevi as the de-glam Sashi looks completely stunning and gets very much into the skin of her character in the film. The way she emotes when she is looked down upon for her poor angrezi is worthy of a good round of applause. It is safe to say that after ‘Sadma’, Chaalbaaz’ and ‘Chandni’, she will always be remembered for her versatile act in ‘English Vinglish’. Clearly, this movie is one of her best works till date.

Anupama Chopra -- 3.5/5

She's vulnerable and sad, yet selfless and strong, in the way we all know our mothers to be. She imbues Shashi's quest for respect with genuine emotion. It's hard to imagine that this is an actor who hasn't worked in fifteen years.

Dna India -- 4 -- English Vinglish speaks universal Language

English Vinglish is among the most refreshingly novel films made in recent times. Gauri Shinde makes an assured debut with a film that seems to have been made with more honesty than calculation, and with more heart than mind. If you're a Sridevi fan, you can't miss it. If you aren't, you still can't miss it.

Rediff -- 4 -- A winner all the way..

Go watch English Vinglish, and take your mothers along. As shown by one great scene which has Shashi speaking furiously in Hindi to her chef friend Laurent, who replies back in thoughtful-sounding French, it isn't about language.
It's about one of the biggest stars of her era transformed into the plainest Jane, a delightful heroine who saves all her grace for hoisting her son onto her pillow. It's about how vital the smallest-seeming dreams can prove to be. Ah, spell it English Win-glish, I say.

Taran Adarsh Gave it a four as well....

and this one of my friends Tweet..

I clapped. I cried. I became emotional. I smiled. I felt immensely elated and I called my mother immediately after coming from Theater. Why I cried? Why there is a BIGGGGGG (never ending) smile on my face throughout the film? Why I remembered my mother,my family? Why did I felt so damn good? --to know the answers, please watch this brilliant 'simple' film. Gauri Shinde made her debut film with such finesse, such honesty and such brilliance that you will love her narrative style which is-'to the point' without playing around. She gets the perfect casting and it is awe-inspiring-feeling to watch Sridevi again on silver screen, the believability she brings to a character is just amazing.

So people....Go watch...one of the Finest Actress in Indian cinema show how it is done.....16 years later..

English Vinglish: The Queen’s Speech

07CP_ENGLISH_VINGL_1229687f.jpg

The queen returns to her throne to give the industry starved of quality actresses a crash course in acting with Gauri Shinde’s finely crafted slice of life drama English Vinglish.

Echoing sentiments previously seen in Revathy’s Mitr My Friend, Shinde’s film too captures the unspoken angst of a neglected housewife and mother with refreshing restraint and super sensitivity, at least for most of its running time, letting Sridevi demonstrate how it’s done — from the subtlest of expressions to full blown drama. She makes you smile, she brings a tear to the eye, makes you feel and root for her from the very first scene when she sets her cup of tea aside to fetch a cup for her husband.

There is no evil husband or children with issues here. The characters are so real which is why we feel for the increasingly alienated woman. The brilliant Adil Hussain pulls off a rather difficult role — he is a loving, caring husband but happens to look down at her and says the most insensitive things without intending to hurt. So, it is a nice touch that the filmmaker doesn't feel the need to make him apologise expressly.

The understated change in his attitude says it all.

It is a delightful ensemble that makes sure you are entertained all through. Be it pretty Priya Anand who makes a fine Hindi debut, the charming French actor Mehdi Nebbou or any of the other supporting actors for that matter, they all get to make an impression in this feel-good drama that would make for a memorable television series in the lines of Mind Your Language.

The first half, especially, makes for a riveting pilot episode as it introduces characters and sets the stage for many potentially funny sitcom gags... but given the limitations of the medium, Shinde breezes through the bonding, camaraderie and learning with song sequences and races to the rather predictable but highly effective climax — the big speech.

Like The King's Speech, this star vehicle is all about the lead character finding her voice and confidence.

So, the film was always going to be evaluated on how well the final English speech is written and delivered. Sridevi nails it so beautifully. What a masterfully nuanced performance this is!

The childlike shiver in her voice is now more of a quiver but that apart, there is no other indication that the Queen has aged.

Amitabh Bachchan chips in with a lovely little cameo earlier on in the film (Ajith in the Tamil version of the film) and Amit Trivedi's music adds to the instantly likeable light-hearted vibe of the film. Which is why a couple of scenes where the drama is a couple of notches higher look a little out of place in this film that's largely cooked and tempered at low flame.

English Vinglish delivers what it promises. You will fall in love with Sridevi all over again. It's a fantastic tribute to motherhood and womankind. Make sure you take your folks along. The perfect way to say, ‘I love you, mom.

Going Tommarrow!!!

English Vinglish -- 2012

The Movie reminded me so much of my Grandmother and an unintentional jabs(only as fun) we took at her for not knowing proper Telugu(she has a village accent) From this side of the spectrum it all looks fun....but I do not think it is as fun being on the other side.

A really Beautiful, pure simple movie. Who better than Sridevi to do the character of a simple housewife . Her eyes Speak and communicate with the audience..she does not need to really speak. She carries the role with so much dignity, innocence and determination . Great comeback...

Loved her classmates...the pakistani guy, mexican guy was funny. Loved how the French guy and Sri communicate with each other in french and hindi respectively...

Final speech was wonderful...simple..and heart touching.

Priya Anand was lovely...bubbly...she was great in her southern films as well!!

Some of the dialogues are real tribute to the housewives who unfortunately are kinda ignored in the strata of the society.

I am giving a 10/10 for Picking up the theme....for Sridevi....Nothing groudbreaking....but a simple film with a very good message. Watch it with your Family...especially a mother or your wife :)

^^^ That is the case with every movie industry!!! This year and to some extent have been excellent for bollywood in terms of quality cinema!!!!

Hey Bollywood Buff Op -

Have you seen the movie Trishna or has anyone else seen it ? It stars the Slumdog heroine .

^^^^^ No. I saw the DVD once in the library.. a friend told me it is just an okay movie. and we picked Perfume!!

But the movie won Pinto a few accolades though...it is related to terrorism and muslims being descrminated I think!!

Slumdog heroine? then I am not watching it.. she looks like a fish which has been dried and is all bones...no she looks like some fossil..I want to watch a movie not count how many bones a human body has..

It may have been excellent but only because the crap movies have set the bar so low..that any normal or different movie looks excellent..

I will tell you what excellent movies are.. Amol Palekar's Golmal, Rajesh Khanna's Anand, Amitabh's Kabhi Kabhi, Chupke Chupke, Main Azad Hoon.. Hero Hiralal by Nasiruddin Shah.. you can find them on Moser Baer if you want to watch..

but I dont mind crap movies also..anything that entertains people..after all most movies are to escape from reality..so I am a supporter of rubbish movies..just that I don't watch them...

^^^^ lol. thought she was too skinny too in "Return of the Apes" . But I think she has put on a little weight recently...

See..I have nothing against skinny people..or actress who dont look good..but I have a problem because they make believe that being skinny is beautiful..and they make our normal girls look fat.. so many girls with reed like arms just because of these kinds of actresses...that you can break them if you want... please go and eat some butter chicken and aloo paratha..and then come on screen..

I have watched and loved all those movies you have mentioned. except hero hiralal..especially Anand and Golmaal are my all time fa's... Brilliant movies. Would add Namak Haraam.

Yes...as you said...I think bollywood post 2006...more so in the last 3 to 4 years...has a struck a great balance between good cinema and bollywood style entertaining cinema. I think that is a very necessary to have viable financially good industry ...to make better cinema...reach wider audience..and increase catchment area for every genre. Masala cinema gives an industry a reach..even for hollywood.

I like watching typical bollywood cinema...I do not get all intelligent while watching a movie..ofcourse there is a limit and no way I can appreciate a Tees Mar Khan or a Joker...I think Baand Bhaaja Bharaat is a very good example of a good entertaining cinema...and even Vicky Donor.

And then there are Anurag Kashyap and likes who are making fantastic real cinema.

Even the masala movies are not like old times..Mohra was such a great masala movie..Tridev..Vishwatma...epic masala movies..they dont make like them no more..

Seriously...I blame Kareena Kapoor during Tashan for this nonsense in India...before that you did not see Indian women trying to be skinny outside in real life..or before that likes or Rani, priety were always healthy!!!...and her PR stunts on Size Zero..and her programms and how she worked out..and what she ate and all that nonsense.

Glad she came back to her senses later on....with Jab we met and Yeh Dil song in Don..

I think Vidya Balan and Sonakshi Sinha are doing a very good job...even in interviews..explaining how it is healthy being like them promoting them!!!

Even this new actress Huma Qureshi is so pleasantly healthy..had bigger arms than Nawazuddin..more desi girls like them please!!

hmm..No!!! I think the 90's was the cheesiest phase of Indian cinema....for us...I think going back 90's is great nostalgia...I definately enjoy them very much.......but looking back objectively it was brilliantly cheezy. But the 90's songs...the 90's actors...was something I always enjoy. Especially people who have grown up on it...that was signature bollywood..but I am glad we have moved on though!! but I think it was enormously more fun for people of that generation..today's masala cinema is too over the top (housefull franchises..golmaal franchise)...or Too real to be called masala cinema(Baand Bhaaja Bhaarat, Vicky donor etc)..for now..enjoy :D

Great to see the mention of that movie . Not many mention it among the films in which Amitabh has worked . If I remember correctly , it is about a fake revolutionary hired by the Politicians to give people fake hopes and get their support , who in the end dies .

I dont understand why it was possible to produce such brilliant movies in 1980s but not now ?

Regarding Amol Palekar , Just watches one of his movie Rajnigandha Yesterday . TBh , these old serious movies are a million times more watchable than the cheap OTT movies lik Singham , Rathore .

And yes , Hero Hiralal was great too . Hiralal probably tries to impress some heroine in that movie and in the end gets himseld drowned in water . Always Liked the Satish Shah and Naserudin Shah combo in movies, even Sunil Gavaskar once acted with them in one of the movies if am not wrong .
