India Launches Chandrayaan-2 Moon Mission on Second Try

By Jeffrey Gettleman and Hari Kumar

July 22, 2019

SATISH DHAWAN SPACE CENTER, India — India is on its way to the moon.

One week after a first attempt was canceled at the last minute, the Chandrayaan-2 mission blasted off at 2:43 p.m. on Monday from the Satish Dhawan Space Center on India’s southeast coast, carrying an uncrewed lunar lander and this country’s space dreams.

The 142-feet-tall rocket rose on a funnel of fire, ripping through the air perfectly straight and surprisingly fast, before vanishing into a thick bank of clouds, heading for the south pole of the moon.

“The mission has been successfully accomplished!” blared a message from loudspeakers at mission control.

Last week, Indian rocket scientists abruptly called off the launch less than an hour before liftoff. They had found a “technical snag,” they said. Scientists later disclosed that one of the helium tanks in the upper stage of the rocket had been slightly losing pressure.

But on Monday, all systems were go for the first-ever mission to the moon’s south pole. India plans to land a remote-controlled lander softly on the moon’s surface near the pole, which it will then explore with a small, six-wheeled rover.

“The low-pressure issue got corrected,” said Vivek Singh, a spokesman for the Indian Space Research Organization, India’s version of NASA. “The mood is perfect.”

“You know in space missions, you can’t go with 99 percent confidence,” he added. “You should have 100 percent confidence.”

If successful, India will become the fourth nation — after the United States, Russia and China — to land on the moon, more than 200,000 miles away. It would be a huge leap forward for the country’s ambitious space program, and scientists and defense experts everywhere are watching to see whether the Indians can pull it off.

Within India, the mission has stoked enormous pride, especially among schoolchildren who dream of being astronauts.

Shortly before the launch, a huge crowd of space enthusiasts gathered at the gates. The weather was hot and muggy, around 90 degrees, with thick cloud cover and occasional drizzles. Cameras dangled from their necks and some, like Kaushal Vijay, 8, wore pins saying “I Love India.”

“It’s going to be like a missile going to the moon!” he said. “A lot of fire and noise.”

His mother, Kswetha Vijay, said she had not hesitated to pull her children out of school for the day.

“I feel proud for my kids to see this,” she said.

Huge video screens in the space center’s media room alternated between live images of the rocket standing on the launchpad to shots of scientists and engineers sitting in rows in front of banks of computers at mission control.

The timing for this moon mission could not be more opportune. This weekend was the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s first steps on our little neighbor. All the anniversary coverage has uncapped a wave of moon fever around the world.

Indian space officials said the Apollo connection was just a coincidence.

India had planned to do this mission several years ago as something of a joint venture in space with Russia. But after the Russians backed out because of problems in their own space program, India needed to make all the systems itself, which caused a long delay.

The mission includes four components: a giant Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle — Mark III rocket (though it is much shorter and lighter than the Saturn V rocket that lifted the Apollo missions); an orbiter; a lander; and the small rover.

The mission costs less than $150 million, but will take much longer than the relatively straight shot made by the Apollo missions, which cost billions (the presence of humans along for the ride added to the price tag).

The Indian orbiter will conserve fuel by making ever-widening orbits around the Earth before being captured by the moon’s gravity and pulled into lunar orbit. The whole journey will take more than five weeks.

The lander will then drop down from the orbiter. After it touches down on the moon, Chandrayaan’s little solar-powered rover will chug out. This is scheduled for early September.

The mission has been timed for the beginning of a moon day, so the rover can get maximum sunlight.

Making a soft landing will be the hardest part — an Israeli lander trying to do the same thing crashed on the moon in April.

Indian scientists had built a small cushion into their timing of orbiting the Earth and say the one-week delay will not affect the intended landing date.

But, Mr. Singh admitted, “Some of our flexibility will be reduced.”

Hopefully it will land in the Moon. India's space research is seriously talented, Mars, Moon... Finally Indian engineer's showing their potential.... Well done...

Big step for India.

Congratulations!

Here’s hoping we will ever see a team go to the Moon or Mars... which will have Indians and Pakistanis together.

This is an inspiration to all south Asians for progress
We may hate each other to the core but world see us all with same eye

Isro always makes us proud. However only half the work is done. We will have to wait till the lander "vikram" touches lunar surface and successful release rover "pragyan".

Having said that, whats wrong with Doordarshan lol ? Are they still using cameras from 1980's ? The live coverage was pathetic to say the least.

Modi ji Doordarshan ko camera kharidne ke lie thore paise dedo.

Given the way we are treating earth, don't be surprised in a few hundred years, all the humans will have to shift to moon or mars for cricket and everything else.

Them getting money is bad for paid tv channels, can't be allowed.

One of the rare good things to come out of India, ISRO is like an oasis in the desert. Congrats to the scientists and engineers involved, politicians can buzz off.

Watched it Live (towards the end). Great achievement.

Technically, it is still first attempt. The last attempt was aborted due to technical glitch.

I have been to ISRO. The women scientists are inspirational examples.’very down to earth and hard working intelligent women. Hope they get the deserved
Limelight.

Incredible moment. Congratulations to ISRO. It's a monumental achievement.

Exactly. Mixing western science while praying to indian Gods for success of the mission, really proud of the isro scientists.

Some of the ISRO scientists are believers in Hinduism. But it is Science first though for them.

Emphasis on education in the 90's, especially in the southern states are paying off for India.

Excellent achievement for India. Seems like for Indian government ISRO is khala ka beta and HAL is phopoo ka beta :yk

Poor from Harbhajan.

These kind of missions are for entire humanity as the entire world will benefit from the findings of these missions.

Its 2019 and its a pity that instead of collaborating, we use these things to put other countries down.

Poor comment.

Harbhajan needs to realise he has a fan-following and to say these kind of things is only feeding those fans with hate.

After all the talks about “Aman ki Asha” on Twitter by Indian and Pakistani celebrities, and to tweet this is absolutely contradicting.

We want peace? We should start with ourselves.

Preach what you practice.

Good luck to India on this. We don't need to fight with them all the time neither belittle everything they do. Now someone here will call me an Indian:ma

Playing to the gallery as he knows it is a popular narrative to compare your nation to any Muslim nation, perhaps it has to do with being ruled by Muslims and breaking India into pieces.

A great achievement from India is being devalued by immature and petty comments.

A bit premature, the lander and rover are yet to work successfully.

Achievements like this should be for all mankind, stay classy.

One of the rare good things to come out of India, ISRO is like an oasis in the desert. Congrats to the scientists and engineers involved, politicians can buzz off.

The entire IT industry which generates over a hundred billion dollars in forex earnings and provides employment to over a hundred thousand persons is pretty good too.

ISRO is an ATG.

May become the GOAT one day.

In terms of productivity (defined as missions accomplished minus failures for dollars spent) ISRO is already the GOAT by a country mile. I remember there was National Geographic article about ISRO's peerless track record.

The cost of Chandrayaan 2 was less than $150 million (if I remember correctly. Yes, 141 million USD, just checked).

One of the most 'profitable' govt of India ventures, in my opinion. It has launched more than 50 foreign satellites, and counts Netherlands, USA, Germany, Israel, Canada, Japan, Turkey, Malaysia, UAE, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea, Argentina, Italy, Austria, France, Chile, and many other nations among clients for which it has launched satellites successfully.

The US, UK, Germany, Canada, and Singapore are the most prolific clients of ISRO.

Even more valuable than the money it generates is the goodwill it generates for India.

ISRO has been a great brand ambassador for India.

Preach what you practice --> Well said bro! If we want to see peace in the world, we should become peaceful within ourselves and our actions should reflect that. Harbhajan's troll is unnecessary though he might have created it for a bit of fun.

There is a very deafening silence in the Western media about the big role of Indian women in the Chandrayaan project. It doesn't mesh with the narrative they push about the state of Indian, or in general South Asian, women. The Indian media on the other hand has multiple articles on this topic.

Not sure what they will achieve by going to moon. Moon is useless. Is is a waste of money. Should've tried Mars. Congratulations to India though.

Faraday, the discoverer of electromagnetic induction, was asked what was the use of electricity. He is supposed to have replied “what is the use of a newborn baby?”

Journey of a mile begins with a single step, we can't skip levels. First ISRO sent a lunar probe to Moon, then the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) and now attempting a soft landing on Moon. Everything will be gradual and incremental, if this mission is a success the level of difficulty next time will be one step higher.

Harbhajan is a clown, him and other patriots have behaved as expected. No grace, no humility, no manners.

To those fellow countrymen (mainly BJP supporters) who keep taking digs at South Indians it will be a nice reminder that ISRO is dominated by Southies. Keep questioning our patriotism, contribution towards country, cultural/linguistic assimilation etc and these silent, non attention seeking scientists keep mounting greater heights, unsung heroes. To those who keep harping about Dravidian anti-nationals, urban-Naxals, Tamil extremists, Hindi's status etc, may I remind you that the Chairman and Chief of this project is a man who was born in Kanyakumari, educated in a Tamil medium government school (from interviews doesn't seem to know Hindi) and has contributed immensely to India's cryogenic engine programme. If you wanna run your mouths about affairs of our region, culture and lecture/mock us, don't forget men like Dr. K Sivan who though underrated are no less when it comes to national contribution.

The lander is named 'Vikram', after Vikram Sarabhai who was the father of our space programme. A well deserved honour, the Sarabhai family has contributed immensely towards building this nation starting from our Independence movement.

Only yesterday did I come to know that Vikram Sarabhai was related to Captain Lakshmi Sehgal (born Swaminathan), the commander-in-chief of Netaji Bose's 'Rani of Jhansi' regiment of Azad Hind Fauj. Mrinalini (Vikram's wife) was the younger sister of Captain Lakshmi and daughter of freedom fighter Ammu Swaminathan. Interesting to see how greatness attracts greatness.

Disappointing.

But happens. And it's fine really.

Democracy would have ALL kinds of views.

The point is here is that these foreign publication spend ages talking about the pathetic state of Indian women (which is true by the way for most part). At the same time, they should show stuff which is different from the unidimensional narrative they are peddling.

Looking at BBC news, at times I feel like they search for the craziest stories in India to publish. It's like Dinathandi in Tamil. Not that they shouldn't publish it but it feels like they try extra hard to get the wacky stories. :))

Hindu will publish both good and bad. I don't have a problem with it.

Same is true with Iranian women. They talk endlessly about the plight of the women in Islamic Iran but there are many good stories as well which are conveniently forgotten. Female literacy, education are in excellent shape in Iran and 70% of the science/engineering graduates are women. West has abysmal participation of women in STEM, yet these agenda driven western publications don't even mention Iran's achievements in the same. The only woman to win Fields medal (2014: same batch as Manjul Bhargava) passed away recently at a young age, her name is Maryam Mirzakhani from Iran who even won the IMO gold for her country when the competition was thoroughly dominated by boys. When she passed away after a battle with cancer foreign media didn't do enough to recognize her Iran link. Agenda, agenda, agenda everywhere.

Tbh it's the sad reality either government is not fully using capability of our satellites to help the common people or these satellites are not good enough, last year they couldn't predict the cyclone and rains which affected crores of people and recently they failed to find a crashed aircraft in arunachal

A cyclone of similar magnitude killed 20,000 people in 1999 in the same state.

Did I say they were comparable? Why do you assume stuff and miss the main point? I talked about her IMO gold because in that era (early 90s) it was rare, almost impossible to find girls in IMO competitions. But Iran had one in their ranks, and a pretty accomplished one.

Has China sent a craft to Mars? If yes, in how many attempts?

What is your point? China has had manned space missions since 2003 and first Asian space station. What we are trying to do with this mission, China has already done. They have more payloads in orbit, human spaceflights, space lab etc. ISRO has many things in its favor and may become even better but right now China is ahead. But as I said we shouldn't compare, just trust the process and keep on improving. ISRO is a rare gem from India.

One of the most inspirational pic ever.

Typical South Indian aunties and grannies.

Could easily be mistaken for housewives but look at what they ended up achieving.

Harbhajan is a pathetic loser.

Less said about him the better.

10332739487394th time he gets owned.

Paindoo.

Most Indian scientists are from the South, right? Looks like the educational system in South India is really good.

Most of the scientist profiles I am seeing have a common link, alumni of IISc Bengaluru. The IITs, IIMs, AIIMS get all the plaudits but how underrated is IISc? It has been the main driving engine behind research and scientific/engineering excellence in India. Ever since it entered rankings (UG came only recently and is a pre-requisite in the survey) it has been comfortably the best from India and probably the only Science/Engineering University that is truly world class, especially in terms of research impact. Hopefully it gets its due respect in Indian circles and more children get motivated to join pure science courses.

Not a valid comparison. Moon exploration happened a long time ago. It is such a useless place that NASA doesn't even send anything there anymore. Better to focus on Mars and other planets.

See this link: https://www.businessinsider.com/moon-missions-why-astronauts-have-not-returned-2018-7.

It is valid as no country is going to give away technology for free. NASA may have space technology, but India has to first get to the level NASA was decades earlier before getting to the next level.

Terrible post by Harbhajan....

I am not sure that you read the article you linked to. It doesn't say that anything like "Moon exploration happened a long time ago. It is such a useless place that NASA doesn't even send anything there anymore."

Instead it says that more Moon exploration hasn't happened because:

1) It is too costly for the US to do. Not surprising given that NASA is a government organization which is not exactly world famous for efficiently using taxpayers' money.

2) Loss of public interest in space, with NASA's budget falling from 4% of GDP during the Apollo program to 0.4% currently.

3) NASA's lack of consistency, with goals changing with different Presidents. Obama cancelled the Constellation program which would have put astronauts back on the moon, after $9 billion had already been spent on it.

4) NASA's graying workforce. Today, more American kids polled say they dream about becoming YouTube stars, rather than astronauts.

5) Money in the US goes to whatever the politicians feel can help them, which means that things become important because the public believes them to be important. After a few Hollywood disaster movies about asteroids striking the Earth, 91% of the public think that scanning the skies for killer asteroids is important.

Moon is still important according to the article. "A permanent human research station on the moon is the next logical step. It's only three days away." said Chris Hadfield, a former astronaut,

Nothing wrong about being a housewife, they achieve the most important thing for humanity. Bringing the next generation into this world and preparing them for life.

I am a south Indian and take offense with this post.

This is a momentous occasion when every Indian (and also most Pakistanis) has risen as one person to laud the achievement of the scientists of ISRO, you still found in this an opportunity to whine about 'those fellow country men (mainly BJP supporters) who keep taking digs at south Indians'.

Wow, somehow this event also gets twisted into bashing some political party for taking digs at south Indians.

Don't forget the fact that Indians from all regions contribute to the nation. Our Sikh brothers have a HUGE presence in the military (besides them making contributions in every other field). Yet Sikh jokes are a subdivision of jokes in themselves. When was the last time you heard a Sikh whine about anything. [this is not meant to be an endorsement of Sikh jokes, just a lament that you could take this moment to gripe about little things]. North Indians have a disproportionately large presence in the Indian Military, and have served the nation with utmost valor.

Jokes aside, it is my personal opinion that Indians in general have a lot of respect for what the South has contributed to the nation. And as a nation Indians are by and large extremely proud and loving of its southern culture, contribution, and peoples.

People from every part contribute to take India forward. I wish we could all celebrate such memorable events without getting mired in petty stuff. In fact I salute our Pakistani friends here on this forum and elsewhere for so wholeheartedly congratulating India's Chandrayaan2 success.

Napa ji..... You know what i meant.

Context is everything. ;-)

Education system is pretty much the same i believe.

Personally, I think competition in South India is tougher than North India but that's just my view.

It may or may not match with the official data.

Someone like Swashbuckler bhai might give you a better picture.

BBC still has colonial mindset. It will publish a lot of rubbish on colonies, esp India. BBC has been banned from covering news in certain sectors in India for violating laws. They think themselves to be above law.

Lol really.

They do try too hard at times.

Its different , for example if you see the admission in IIT its not much from South ,esp TAmizhans really lack in cracking the exam coz State Board is absolute trash but discipline makes up for it later in life although imho Tamizhans studying in CBSC esp DAV ,PSBB or SBOA do very well compared all around.

Yeah main schools in chennai - DAV, PS, PSBB (and a few others) - the good students there pretty much crack anything and everything.

These guys go on to do great stuff.

And maybe that creates the perception.

I was among this crowd and always felt like a duffer. :))

Yesh those guys achieve a lot, incl PS seniors as well the best boys school
Imo much better than Don Bosco.

I was competing with my state board education against them for all of high school but they defn beat me in most cultural activities and also academically.

I love their confidence and competitive spirit though!

You left our old time SBOA. DAV use to get SBOA rejects.

Unless you are talking about DAV mogappair, DAV gopalapuram wiped floor with most schools, even their state board version which btw had only 11 and 12 is still the most popular State board school in Chennai , the amount of people that write entrance for that lol..

this is from Hindu
Cartoon-Isro-final

Hindu is the most pathetic newspaper of India, even worse than Toilet Paper of India(TOI) who caters to masses like the one poster who is taking digs at BJP here.

BJP might be horrible, but you want to scratch the barrel, don't go further than dravidian parties, they are the lowest of the lows.

Congrats to India on this technological achievement.

ISRO is our crown jewel. One of the best institute of our country. I can only hope and pray other institutes can learn from ISRO.

Typical indian delusion that they produce brainy students. if indians are good at maths, how many have won the fields medal ( foreigners of indian origin don't count). If indians are good at IT, how many have won the ACM Turing Award? How many nobels in science? How many science publications in topmost journals? All they can do is gloat about ISRO which wouldn't exist without russian tech. Where the so called scientists pray to indian gods for success of every mission, so much is their faith in science. and a glorified project manager like APJ Abdul Kalam is considered a scientist!

last week news: 127 indian papers retracted https://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/s...-duplication-manipulation/article28422333.ece but but we indians are the besht.
