What's new

Construction of world's tallest statue begins in India

What's the point of it?
To appropriate one of Cong's icons as BJP doesn't have anyone of its own who contributed in freedom struggle. That's the only point. In fact their stalwarts (Savarkar) did their best to thwart the freedom struggle.

On second thoughts, Patel being a Gujarati and that fake Gujarat asmita and all.... Never mind Patel himself banned RSS in '48 (?) and was dead against communal forces...

When was the rss unbanned and under whose tenure?

congress cannot claim any freedom fighter as their icon when they have focussed only on nehru.. even our fuhrer Subhash Bose was once in congress, does it make him a congress icon?

I have always called them the fascists... if you look at the totalitarian regimes around the world.... they all build tall statues and symbols... possibly with the exception of Khmer Rouge, they killed so many people that they probably ran out of labour force.

Congress must be totalitarian regime as they erected so many statues of nehru indira and mohandas and named many airports/stadiums/parks/streets after them.

grand scale like this?

So the height of the statue decides how much totalitarian the regime is? go on, you can surely find similarities with mussolini, hitler or any fascist of your choice. that is what the intellectually bankrupt class does when they want to throw mud at someone without having the facts.

Rajpipla:

Over 27,000 people on Saturday visited the Statue of Unity in Gujarat's Narmada district, the highest since the Sardar Patel memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31 and opened to the public on November 1.

The statue, built on an islet near the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Kevadiya, at 182 metres is the tallest such structure in the world.

With the capacity of the high-speed lift which takes tourists to the viewing gallery inside the statue being 5,000 persons per day, the state government asked people to plan their trip to the memorial keeping this aspect in mind.

The viewers gallery inside the statue is at a height of 135 metres and can accommodate up to 200 persons at one time.

Narmada district Collector R S Ninama, while confirming that 27,000 tourists visited on Saturday, said the administration was expecting the figure to go further up Sunday.

He told PTI the high number of tourists was because of Diwali vacations and the Gujarati New Year holiday.

Mr Ninama said the number of feeder buses ferrying visitors from the parking lot to the statue had been increased to 40 from 15 for Sunday.

In a statement, the state government appealed to the visitors "to plan their trip keeping in mind the timing as well as the capacity of the infrastructure at the Statue of Unity."

The government statement also informed visitors that the memorial remains closed every Monday for maintenance.

"The two lifts at the Statue of Unity can carry up to 5,000 people in a day to the observation deck (viewing gallery). Therefore, all visitors are requested to plan their visits keeping in mind the timings as well as the capacity of the infrastructure," the statement said.

"It is a request to the people of Gujarat to plan their visits in a way that there is no overcrowding and no one comes back disappointed from the Statue of Unity visit," it added.

Apart from the statue, people can go to the Visitors Centre, souvenir shop, exhibition hall, viewing gallery among other attractions.

The entry ticket for the statue and viewing gallery is Rs 350 for adults and Rs 200 for children in the 3-15 age group.

Idols and statues have always been a big part of Hindu culture, we should be mindful that historically there were even phallic statues depicting Shiva lingam. I am not sure that statues of a towering scale like this were ever considered, but if they are going to be built, why not?

Statues have been part of every non-Islamic culture.. Reckon China and Japan have had the highest concentration of tallest statues though India is slowly catching up.

The ban was in fact only in place for a short period and in the words of the political scientist, Paul Brass, Patel in fact "urged an early removal of the ban imposed on it after Gandhi's assassination."

Three weeks before Gandhi's assassination, Patel had stated:

“In the Congress, those who are in power feel that by the virtue of authority they will be able to crush the RSS. You cannot crush an organisation by using the danda [stick]. The danda is meant for thieves and dacoits. They are patriots who love their country. Only their trend of thought is diverted. They are to be won over by Congressmen, by love.”

The French academic, Christophe Jaffrelot noted that even after the RSS was banned:

"Still, Patel was prepared to engage the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. In December 1948, while the Sangh was still banned, he made a speech in Jaipur in which he “advised members of the RSS to join the Indian National Congress if they had the good of the country uppermost in their hearts”. As home minister, Patel negotiated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leaders who wanted the ban to be lifted. He was convinced that the organisation could be legalised after it adopted a constitution complying with the Indian Constitution. He then considered that “the only way for them [the leaders of the RSS] is to reform the Congress from within, if they think the Congress is going on the wrong path”. On October 10, 1949, while Nehru was abroad, Patel had a resolution passed by the Congress Working Committee authorising Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh members to be part of the party but the prime minister rescinded the decision soon afterwards."

Thanks.

So even Patel (darling of sanghis these days) was of the view that sanghis were against constitution.
