As if a brutal Shoaib Akhtar bouncer wasn't enough: Short cracks Gary Kirsten's jaw at practice

Big Bash bowlers fear him like no other and D'Arcy Short's own coach Gary Kirsten might well too, after the South African was left nursing a gruesome facial injury having copped the full force of some Short friendly fire.

Kirsten, in his first year at the helm of the Hobart Hurricanes, was struck by a searing drive from Short as he was giving the star opener throwdowns on Saturday at Blundstone Arena's indoor nets.

The former Proteas Test batsman suffered a cracked jaw and required dental work to fix up multiple chipped teeth. He did not require surgery and although he was sporting some heavy swelling around his mouth on Monday evening during the Hurricanes’ clash with Brisbane Heat, Kirsten was able to complete his coaching duties as normal.

The incident has however forced a rethink of protective requirements for Hurricanes coaches giving players throwdowns, according to captain George Bailey.

"It was wet, so we were in the indoor centre," Bailey told cricket.com.au.

"Darce just whacked one back at him that he didn't pick up in time.

"He is hitting the ball pretty cleanly and hard at the moment. It was a bit messy.

"(Kirsten) has actually come out of it very luckily in the big scheme of things.

"He said that he's probably been a blasé about that over the years. It's obviously prompted (a change) – everyone has had (helmets) on since."

Coaches have become increasingly proactive in protecting themselves while performing the often-hazardous task of throwing balls to batsmen looking to fine-tune their power hitting.

In the BBL many don helmets, wear baseball gloves and station extra protective nets between them and the batter, while some wear chest padding typically worn by catchers in baseball.

Australia coach Darren Lehmann has even sported a full hockey mask while giving throwdowns at practice.

In games, some umpires have taken to wearing helmets while Australian official Bruce Oxenford has used a custom-made bulletproof shield dubbed the 'Ox-blocker'.

Bowlers too are considering their safety. In New Zealand domestic cricket last month, Otago fast bowler Warren Barnes trialled a protective facemask. In July last year, Nottinghamshire fast bowler Luke Fletcher suffered a season-ending head injury after being struck in his follow through in an English domestic T20 game.

Short meanwhile appeared unaffected by the incident with Kirsten in the nets two days prior as he continued his sizzling form to surpass Shaun Marsh's record for the most runs in a single BBL season.

Ouch.

This was easily the worst half century by an Australian opener that i have seen. Plenty of dots, edges, shaky, unconvincing.

pretty weird start of career so far which is surprising because He looked like beast in bbl almost like second coming of Warner.

He can become decent batting allrounder if he improves both faces of his game.

He has looked mostly awful in the last 2 games against Pakistan.Incredibly lucky(dare I say, flukey) innings from him today. He shouldn't have crossed 25 but somehow made 76.

More in the mould of Imran Farhat ala his century against South Africa than Shehzad who at least has proper cricketing shots.

Even before Pakistan started their chase, I created this thread because I saw how flat the wicket was and the shorter boundaries and quick outfield meant it should have been a run feast. Short was extremely lucky today. The reason why i compared him to Shehzad was because of his outlook on the crease, he portrays as if he is the next big thing, minimal facial expressions, chewing his gum, and then trying to slog his way out of the mess after playing far too many dot balls. Australia needs to get rid of him from T20s.

Yaar I have been comparing him to shezi for a month now, both chew up too many dot balls while hitting the ball straight to the fielders.

Proper cricketing shots that always find the fielders*

This guy is a pure hack and does in now way seem like international cricket material. He never seems convincing, even when he's scoring runs

God he was very similar Shezzie in the performance. He definitely has potential but man this was a bad performance.

This guy was clueless in the IPL. He was butt of jokes with all kind of puns. I thought he was in because of Aussie bias. Never knew he was good enough to play for Australia. He deserves few more years of domestic run. How the heck they even selected him. Retired watson would be million times better.

Sums the guy up pretty well - he bats like a tailender. Also he's 28 next month so is he really going to improve much? Even in domestic cricket he'll be found out soon enough imo.

We’ve all heard the ‘my dog ate my homework’ jokes, but imagine having to tell your teammates you won’t be available for the next match because your dog bit you.

D'Arcy Short has to miss Western Australia’s match against New South Wales on Tuesday in Perth after his dog, Ralph bit him, and he needed stitches on his left hand. Western Australia will also miss the services of Marcus Stoinis and Matt Kelly.

The left handed batsman made his debut for Australia against New Zealand in February, and has played 10 T20 internationals apart from 3 ODIs.

"D'Arcy had an unlucky incident two weeks ago while playing with his dog, where his hand got in the way of a dog toy and the bite caused a deep laceration to the palm of his hand," WACA sports science sports medicine manager Nick Jones said in a statement.

"He needed a few stitches and surgical washout but has returned to batting and catching balls this week, and is on track for selection in round two [against South Australia on Saturday]."

Darcy has just scored 257 in a list A game while amassing record 23 sixes.

Warner and Short must open for Aus in 2019 worldcup and if both of them are inform than Aus can lift another WC this time under Langer’s coaching if they have services of fully fit Starc, Joel, Cummins, Lyon and Maxwell & Smith.

Don’t rule out Australia at the moment.

Give it a break guys :-)

D'Arcy Short Signs with Gloucestershire for T20 Blast 2025
Gloucestershire have bolstered their title defence
by signing Australian T20 specialist D'Arcy Short for the upcoming 2025 Vitality Blast. Short, who will be joined by his Western Australia teammate Cameron Bancroft, is set to be available throughout the group stages.

A two-time BBL Player of the Tournament, Short brings explosive top-order power and all-round capability. He previously featured in the Blast with Durham (2019) and Hampshire (2021), and now heads to Bristol with a clear ambition.

"I can't wait to join the reigning Blast winners, Gloucestershire, for the 2025 T20 Vitality Blast. They are a well-run club and I can't wait to meet the players and be part of their success," said Short.

Head coach Mark Alleyne expressed his excitement:

"We are so pleased to get D'Arcy over the line… He brings batting versatility from No. 1-6 and offers spin options in the Powerplay and middle overs. D'Arcy complements everything we are about."

This signing strengthens Gloucestershire’s push to retain their title, adding proven firepower and experience to a well-balanced squad.
